Garth Brooks
If you read my update book, Updates, Rants, and Stereotypes, you might be familiar with this guy. Being a fan of his music myself, I've decided to dive right in with my favorite singer of all time, the King of Growl, himself, Garth Brooks.
Vocal Type/Fach: Lyric Tenor
Vocal Range: Eb2-C5-C6 (3 octaves and 6 notes)
Timbre: Very warm with a mild rasp, but is powerful and poignant
Positives about his voice: His normal singing voice has a lot of depth and soul in it, often having a very bluesy vibe. Due to his three octave vocal range, he can sing from low Bass all the way up to high Countertenor. His phrasing is top-of-the-notch, and I haven't heard somebody that can phrase lyrics the way HE does. He can have the right voice for the right song; for a blues song, he can sing in the blues scale and have a mellow, but growly timbre. Meanwhile when singing Disco, he sings with a jumpy, bright voice. He might be the most agile Lyric Tenor ever, his runs can be pretty fast or even very complex (like the "Meet Me in Love" run). There's so much volume in this man, he could sing very soft and gentle or be wailing his heart out. His voice, despite being 55 years old, has aged rediculously well.
Negatives about his voice: He lowers his larynx a bit too much (not a problem nowadays). His voice can easily overpower somebody, a good example is the Double Live version of "Longneck Bottle" (He was moaning so much in the Sevens era). He is not able to blend in a group of other singers, but can blend when he's singing in duo (by himself or otherwise) or a trio.
