Chapter 30: Sard

A reddish-brown stone used to promote awareness, courage and bravery. When worn, it grants the wearer fearlessness and success.

Destiny and Sarina keep their heads down as Casey and April lead them into the front doors of Mutacorp. Taylor leads the pack, a confident smirk on her face, head held high. It's almost scary how fast she can change personas.

The receptionist at the front arches his eyebrows as they near him and he stops typing. Taylor motions for the others to stay put while she moseys on up to the desk and leans one arm against it, propping up her head on her hand.

"Hey," she greets, motioning to her tattoo. "Purple Dragons. We've got more mutants for Dr. Sabrian. Mind if we bring them up?"

The receptionist glances at the other four, eyes widening. "He mentioned wanting some females. Nice work." He reaches over and presses something on his desk, nodding at them as something buzzes. "Go on in. He should be in his office."

"Gracias."

She motions them all through to the heavy doors leading further inside. Casey tugs a little too hard on Destiny's cuffs, making her bare her teeth at him, and he has to force himself not to apologize. They hurry through the doors and, as soon as they're out of earshot, they get the shackles off.

"So, where are these keys you talked about?" Casey asks.

Taylor rubs the back of her neck. "Ah...I saw that some of the scientists have them. Most of the doors open automatically, but—"

"Do you know where they are, can we get them, or are we stuck right now?" Destiny rattles off, already looking fed up.

Taylor holds her hands up. "We are not stuck," she insists. "All we have to do is find a scientist and I'll swipe their keys."

"Then you show us to where the turtles and Splinter are," Sarina says.

Taylor's face pales. "Uh...okay, about that..."

"What?" April asks.

"I...only know where Raph is. They took everyone else to different rooms."

Destiny starts towards her and Sarina once again sticks her arm out and halts her advance. Destiny takes a cleansing breath and relaxes as much as she possibly can, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Now what, dude?" Casey asks, tugging at his vest before wrapping his arms around himself. He looks up at the ceiling and mutters, "These guys use too much A/C."

"If we find a security room or something with a layout of the building, maybe we can figure out where they're being kept," Taylor suggests.

"I can hack into the system if we find computers," Sarina says.

"Maybe I could sense for them?" April suggests.

"Then what about unlocking their cuffs and stuff?" Casey asks.

"You don't need keys when you've got strength," Destiny states with a devilish grin. She raises her hand and extends her claws. Her ears perk and she whirls around. "Footsteps."

"You can hear—" Taylor starts.

Sarina is already yanking all four of them into the nearest room, knowing better than to doubt Destiny's ears. They huddle in the darkness as the footsteps get nearer, louder, and then fade away again as they pass by.

"Okay, this is ridiculous," Destiny hisses. "We need to sit down and rethink this plan because I'm starting to think that our original plan only got us past the front freaking doors!"

"Well, sue me for not being the best strate...streeg..." Taylor groans and starts muttering to herself. "Demandarme por no ser el mejor estratega—strategist! That's the word."

"Do you just...forget English when you get stressed?" Casey asks.

"Sometimes. That and when I come across a word I'm not used to."

"Okay, seriously, plan," Destiny says. She notices the three humans squinting at the darkness of the room and sighs. "Wow, and I'm the only one who can see right now. Sarina, you mind giving us some light?"

Sarina nods. "Hold on."

She blinks hard, a soft whirring sounds, and when she opens her eyes they're shining like flashlights. Destiny stands and moves to the shelves along the wall, locating some paper and pens within a minute. She returns and drops them into the pool of blue light created by Sarina.

"Here's what I think needs to happen," Destiny says, uncapping a pen and sketching a rough square onto some paper. "I can't smell anything in these halls except disinfectant, so tracking is out of the question unless we get real close to where the turtles are. So, I think April needs to sense where the turtles and Sensei are, along with any scientists. That way, we can avoid confrontation."

"Sounds good," April says. "Only thing is, it's a big building. If they're not close, the signal might be really faint and hard to follow."

"That's where Sarina comes in. Sarina—"

The cyborg looks up from the paper and momentarily blinds Destiny, earning a gasp and a muttered curse word. Sarina apologizes and reverts her gaze back to the paper in an instant, allowing Destiny a moment to blink away the stars in her eyes.

"Okay, Sarina..." she continues, reaching down to scribble on the paper again. "You need to find some blueprints for this building online and see if you can locate holding cells or testing rooms. If we can figure out which floor to go to, April will have an easier time."

"Alright," Sarina says.

"Second part of the plan, we need to split up. We're too conspicuous in a large group and we can get out faster if we all go and find them, then bring them back. Fewer trips, faster getaway." Destiny points to the diagram of the ShellRaiser. "Once Sarina has blueprints and April's done her psychic stuff, I need you—" She points to Taylor. "To open this side door near where we parked the ShellRaiser. I noticed it on the way in. You can't miss it."

Taylor eyes where the pen is and nods. "Oh, yeah, I know where that is."

"Once you get that open, go and get Raph. Casey and April can go and get Splinter—"

"Why both of us on him? We could split up and each get one of them," April says.

"Because Splinter's heavy and we can't risk you being unable to move him," she says, earning a nod. "Sarina can get Donatello. I'll find..." She stops, face falling as she purses her lips. "I'll...go after Mikey first. Once I've got him out, I'll go back for Leo. Everybody cool?"

She looks up to find April and Taylor staring at her, mouths slightly agape, and Casey grins. "What, you guys didn't know that wolfie's a super planner?" he asks.

Destiny blushes. "I'm only good at it in the right circumstances," she mumbles, her multicoloured curls falling over her eyes.

Sarina smiles a little. "It is unfortunate that such a helpful side of yourself only presents itself in the worst situations."

"Okay, okay, let's focus. Sarina, you can put your lights out," Destiny says.

"Thank goodness. My retinas were starting to ache," she says as her eyes dim back to their regular setting. She blinks rapidly while Destiny continues to look over her plan, pen tapping on the paper. "I will start searching for blueprints now," Sarina states. "Please hold."

She shuts her eyes and goes still as the whirring starts up again. April settles into a meditative pose and scrunches up her nose as she rests her fingertips against her temple. Casey and Taylor glance at each other, then at the door, then back at each other again.

"Keep a lookout?" they ask at the same time. They click their tongues. "Ayyy!"

"Ssh," Destiny hisses. "Lots of focus happening here."

They watch the wolf-raven as her lips move silently, her pen still tapping as she thinks, and Taylor makes a scratching motion and bears her teeth. Casey smirks and gets to his feet.

"I'll look out first," he says. "Nothing gets past Casey Jones.

He looks out the window to find a woman already looking in. She lets out a small gasp as he yelps and stumbles back, making everyone else jolt to attention. Casey starts saying something about how he didn't do anything and the door is slowly pushed open.

The woman steps inside, looking over each of the five teenagers with a rather stunned look, and Destiny unsheathes her claws.

"Sewer apples," April mutters.
