Chapter 2

With our hands full and a creepy laughter, we head towards the counter. Naturally, I hope not to cross Mom's path. If she catches me with all the M&M's packets, Mars, Twix, Kit Kats, Oreo biscuits, Milka chocolate, bread, Nutella and chips, she will definitely kill me, or, if I somehow manage to survive, have me eat those stupid granola bars instead.

(By the way, I've been told lately that granola it's actually unhealthier than thought and that probably also tastes disgusting.)

Luckily, we manage to head to a different counter than Mom's and also to pay all that stuff by ourselves with cash, without relying on credit cards or coupons. (Anyway, who uses credit cards at a supermarket? Also, coupons remind me of Mom, who hates them being stolen from her purse.)

Later on, without thinking twice, I find myself jumping on Leighanne's car. Actually, it belongs to her father - as she hasn't bought her own car yet - and it looks dreadful. There is a terrible smell, and, what's worse, the seats are old and uncomfortable. Nonetheless, neither Leighanne nor Aaleahya could care less; better say, they're shouting and barking like idiots (why are they keeping insisting they're singing?) at the front seats, whereas I stay at the back without making a single noise.

"Aren't you singing, Sugar?" asks Aaleahya, making me roll my eyes, even more annoyed at hers and Leighanne's voices. Why can't they have mercy of my poor ears and just shut up for once?

"You know I'm a poor singer," I snap back, hoping that they'll change their subject. Instead, my answer makes them even more motivated to make me sing. This is why they change station and turn to Popbuzz FM, which is probably the most popular radio channel here in town.

Right now, Better Place by Rachel Platten is playing. Thank God it's not one of the usual boring, upbeat commercial shit people keep defining hits. This song, at least, holds some meaning. An important one, I'd say.

I'll tell the world, I'll sing a song
It's a better place since you came along
Since you came along.

As I let myself be guided by the stunning lyrics, I realize that this isn't exactly the kind of song Popbuzz FM would broadcast on a regular basis. It's far too underrated to make it to a popular radio station.

Suddenly, Aaleahya breaks the magic - why the hell would she do so? - and points out, "Oops. I accidentally turned to Alternatives FM. Wrong station, I think." She laughs nervously, much to my increasing irritation.

I ignore her and reprise singing, this time followed by my friends. Their ungraceful voices somehow cover mine, making me wonder why on hell I accepted to follow them. Honestly, I could've just left them behind and gone home. Though, there's a huge problem: my mother and sisters.

So, I just try to enjoy myself, since I have a chance at one of the rare moments of complete freedom in my life. If it weren't for the girls, I'd be stuck with my dysfunctional family, eating disgusting food Mom keeps definining "tasty" and watching pointless TV programs.

After a weird and tiresome trip, we reach the destination as Leighanne stops her father's car at his garage - okay, their garage. This can only mean one thing: Netflix and chill all night long. Unless my parents decide to get on my tits by calling me non-stop.

"Come on, girls. Let's try to enjoy our last tiny bits of freedom before school restarts," Leighanne exhorts. So, as soon as she enters her house, Aaleahya and I follow her without saying a word. Each of us is holding a paper bag full of the junk food we bought at the market.

We place them on the small table in the living room, while Leighanne turns the TV on and opens Netflix. "By the way, neither of my parents are home," she announces, which is good news for the rest of us. No parents usually means no restrictions, so I guess I got lucky.

The three of us slowly extract the packets of food from the bags, then we sit on the cream couch. After a couple of minutes, Aaleahya heads to the kitchen to look for some bowls and plastic glasses, whereas Leighanne is zapping through Netflix to find a good TV show to watch together.

As Aaleahya comes back, we finally find something to watch after a brief discussion. "So, what about The End of the F**** World? I've always wanted to see if it's a good one." Leighanne asks, earning our approval as we nod. When the episode starts playing, we turn silent, focusing on the screen and occasionally munching some snacks.

Suddenly, Aaleahya is shaken by her phone going off so abruptly, given that we're still in the middle of watching TV. To my annoyance, she picks her phone up to see at least three messages coming from Celine. Damn, that girl can be really clingy when she wants!

'Darlings, it's a matter of life or death! I think Kaylen is texting another girl.'

'I'm not exactly sure about what he's up to, but I'm not gonna let him fool me again.'

'I'm more than sure that he doesn't want to stay with me anymore. If so, then we're over.'

Celine is the typical snooty little brat who's always bragging about being popular, having a handsome boyfriend and scoring high marks at every single test. If I could, I'd punch her teeth straight away, even if this means earning detention for the whole year.

After glancing at the phone, Aaleahya puts it back on the table, not even bothering to answer those pathetic text messages. She's doing the right thing. Celine doesn't deserve our attention and much less Kaylen's. I won't stand for the way she dares to accuse him of cheating when everybody knows that she's a certified slut.

Enough about talking of that brat, anyway. The show goes on and we slowly start running out of food. Leighanne disappears in the kitchen for a couple of minutes, eventually returning with a huge packet of chips and a big bowl of vanilla ice-cream.

As we satisfy our desire of junk food and a good series on Netflix, I realize that heading back to school after such a weird day will be even harder than I thought.
