Episode 3 : The Story Of Dorothy Forstein
Dorothy Forstein was an American woman who disappeared on October 18th 1949 and she has never been found since...
Dorothy Forstein lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with her childhood sweetheart, Jules Forstein and their 3 children. They lived a very happy life, but one day changed their lives forever...
On January 25th 1945, Dorothy Forstein dropped her children off at a neighbour's house to go shopping. It was nearly dark when she returned home. All of a sudden, as she entered her house, someone SPRINGED OUT AND ATTACKED HER! Beating the helpless woman into unconsciousness...
Luckily, her fall knocked over a telephone and when the operator was hearing strange noises on the other side of the call, they immediately alerted the police. When they arrived, she was found with her nose and jaw broken, one of her shoulders fractured, and suffering from a concussion. She regained consciousness shortly after the police arrived, but after the police arrived, all she could really say was "Someone jumped out at me..."
Investigators were very puzzled by the crime. Burglary couldn't have been the motive because nothing in the house was stolen and neither her or her husband had any known enemies or conflicts.
Dorothy quickly recovered from her physical injuries, but her mental health was never the same... She became extremely worried and paranoid about a similar catastrophe happening to her or her family. She always locked the door whenever she went out of the house, she never looked out the window at night, and most of the time, she would never let anyone in her family go out alone. Despite the catastrophe and over-protection, the life for the Forsteins gradually returned to normal and they soon went back to their happy-go-lucky lives they had before, for the next 4 years. But all of that happy-go-luckiness suddenly came to a grinding halt...
On this day, 74 years ago, on the night of October 18th 1949. Dorothy Forstein was home alone with her 2 younger children because her husband Jules and her eldest child were out for the evening. Dorothy spent the evening making phone calls to her friends and family members. She made her last phone call with her husband that night and the last thing she ever said to him was "Prepare to miss me." Before she hung up... Little did Jules Forstein know that those words will have much deeper meanings shortly after...
At 9:00 PM, Dorothy Forstein made the last phone call of her life. She was calling a friend, planning a shopping trip the next day. She then hung up. That was the last time anyone had ever spoken to or heard from Dorothy...
When Jules Forstein returned home at 11:30 PM, he realised that his wife wasn't home and found his kids crying in their room, repeating over and over, "Mommy's gone!". For unknown reasons, Mr. Forstein waited 2 days for his wife to come home before he alerted the police about her sudden disappearance.
Police, surprised by her second incident, searched desperately all over Philadelphia for the missing woman. They even knocked on her neighbours' doors to ask her if they had seen or heard anything strange on the night of her disappearance, but they found nothing... Just like her first incident 4 years prior, burglary could not have been the motive for the incident because nothing in the house was stolen. Not even her purse, wallet, or keys. Even 4 years after the first incident, the Forsteins still had no public enemies, so there weren't many suspects for her disappearance either. However, the police were able to think of two possible suspects.
One suspect was a man named Morris Anmuth. Because Jules Forstein was a magistrate and judge, he obviously knew about a lot of criminals in Philadelphia, but no criminal in his city seemed to have a hatred or even a dislike of him, except for one particular man. That man was Morris Anmuth. Morris Anmuth was a criminal who had a huge hatred towards Jules Forstein because he thought he gave him a sentence that was too harsh. After he was discovered bleeding after he was beaten up by prison guards one night in jail, he was paroled and given freedom in the city. Some people speculate that Morris Anmuth was still fueled by hatred towards his judge and wanted to take revenge on him and he thought kidnapping and murdering his wife was the perfect idea. But there has been no proof or confessions about Morris Anmuth being responsible for Dorothy's disappearance...
Another suspect who a lot of people agree was responsible for her disappearance nowadays was her husband himself, Jules Forstein. People find it really suspicious that her husband waited for 2 days to alert the police about his wife's disappearance. Especially when his children were crying over her being gone when they normally wouldn't whenever she went away for a while. But there has been no proof about Jules Forstein having a conflict with his wife or any mental health problems that would make him do such a thing. Especially because he was a magistrate and a judge who had a lot of standards in life too. Because the Forsteins had very little known enemies, there are only so many suspects on who might have been responsible for the disappearance of Dorothy Forstein...
Now even though it seems that this story cannot get any more scary and mysterious, there is one more aspect about this story that makes it take an even DARKER turn... And that is... Dorothy Forstein's 9 year old daughter, Marcy Forstein's involvement in the story...
Marcy Forstein told police that on the night of October 18th 1949, the night her mother disappeared, she was woken up by the sounds of someone ENTERING THE HOUSE... When she went out into the hall to investigate, she saw a strange middle aged man wearing a brown cap come upstairs with Dorothy Forstein's unconscious body on his shoulder... Marcy nervously asked him, "What are you doing?" And the man calmly replied "Go back to sleep, little one. Your mother is alright..." He then patted her head and walked outside of the house carrying Dorothy... Marcy said that 15 minutes later, her father returned home...
Police and detectives were sceptical about Marcy's story because there were no fingerprints in the house, nor was there any sign of forced entry, and it seemed impossible that a man could carry a woman's unconscious body down a very busy street unnoticed. And how could Dorothy's body have been rendered dazed or unconscious before the strange man entered the house? The police and detectives weren't sure whether to believe the little girl's story or not, but psychiatrists who tested her were convinced that she was indeed telling the truth and everything she said in her story really did happen...
It's been 74 years since Dorothy Forstein's disappearance and because there is very little to wonder about it, no progress on solving it has ever happened in the last 74 years, and because we still haven't solved it in 74 years despite how advanced we have gotten, it may never be solved at all...
To this day, 74 years later, no trace of Dorothy Forstein has ever been found...
The end...
