03 | Maybe Tony Stark
Charles leaves Nadia to think about going to public school for a week or two. Just as usual, he asks her how she's feeling about it every day. Her answer is the same each day, "I don't know yet, dad." She's stuck in her head most of the time anyhow.
All of her classes are going well, except for math of course. Charles points that out when he's going through his emails at dinner when she wakes up at 10 pm.
"Is your tutor not helping any?"
Nadia shrugged, "They're okay, I just don't get math like everyone else, I guess." She picks at her macaroni and cheese absent-mindedly.
"Do you think... going to physical school would help?" Nadia resists the urge to give him a dirty look, "I've got to ask, you know this."
She busies herself by eating some of the chicken on her plate. They sit in silence until she answers, "I don't... I think I'm just bad at math," The food in front of her suddenly seemed unappetizing. She pushed the plate away.
"Okay, here's another option," She visibly perked up, "School is a part of this option, just... listen." Charles looked at Nadia seriously and she nodded for him to continue, "There's this internship, math/science related. It'll get you out of your math and sciences classes. You'll just go for the others."
That didn't sound so bad, "What's this internship for?"
"Youth for The Future of New York," Her face dropped, "Listen I know someone who knows the man who runs it–"
"You mean you know Tony fucking Stark?"
Charles sighed, "Something like that, Naddy."
She felt annoyed at him, "Dad I'm shit at math and science! I'm barely passing Physics as it is!"
"The internship is just being in a lab setting! You'll probably hardly even touch anything."
"Are you being serious?" He nodded, "Will I get to meet Hawkeye and Black Widow?"
Charles shook his head with a laugh, "I don't know kiddo. I just know it'll get you outta the house and out of Algebra 2." He sets down his water, "I do need an answer by the end of this week though, there's a time limit on signing up."
"I'll do it, just so you don't get the government on your ass."
"God, your language is just horrible."
She scoffed at him, "Sorry," Despite hating the thought of going to school, she felt a sort of excitement under the surface. "Wait, how will I go out? Will I need to wear sunglasses 24/7?" Nadia hadn't even thought about her weird condition. Ever since she was little, brightly lit areas have always made her eyes water or plain hurt.
Neither her or Charles knew why her eyes were like that. She could see perfectly in dimly lit areas but that's not too useful now.
"Oh! That reminds me, remember I said I know someone who knows–"
Nadia cut her dad off, "Someone who knows Tony Stark, yea? What about it?"
A smile grew on Charles' face, "Wait here," He ran to the living room and Nadia turned around in the chair to watch him, he rifled through his work jacket. "Okay, so... close your eyes!"
"What? Why!?"
Charles tilted his head, "Just do it okay? It's nothing bad, I promise." Nadia rolled her eyes and squeezed them shut. "Alright here," He set something in her hands.
It felt smooth, it was like a case or something? Nadia opened her eyes and in her hands sat a case for glasses. She gave him a peculiar look, he nodded at her to open it. The case snapped open and inside sat a pair of black-framed glasses. "Huh," Nadia looked back at him, "I don't need glasses dad."
"You're an idiot, put them on and go turn the light on in the bathroom, it should be bright enough."
Nadia listened despite him acting weird. She flipped the switch and squinted, "Shit," the glasses fit her perfectly and for a moment she stood in awe. The lights didn't burn her eyes like they normally did. "What the hell–" She blinked slowly, it was weird. Nadia turned around and laughed, completely stunned.
"What do you think?" Charles' face was nervous.
"I think this is fucking awesome!?" Nadia rushed at him and hugged him, "What the hell where'd you get these?"
"Maybe from Tony Stark, I dunno."
