01 | Some Kid
Nadia has always enjoyed the night time. The cool air was nice on her hot skin and it was always so crisp in Hell's Kitchen. That's if you're above the smell of exhaust from all the cars. Even if her dad hated when she would roam in the middle of the night, she still did it (mostly for her own sanity). Nadia felt so calm at night, her brain was the quietest during that time.
During the day things felt wrong and uncomfortable, especially since she was always holed up in her dark room. Most of the time, she slept until ten at night then decided to wake up. She spent most of her time catching up on her school work she hated so much. Nadia didn't really understand why she even had to do online schooling but it was way better than going to physical school.
She and Charles (her adoptive dad) had an agreement; Nadia gets to do (almost) anything she wants (pretty much) whenever she wants so long as she continues to do online schooling. It was a fair trade off considering the... other option.
Charles always went on about the importance of knowledge and how vital it was that Nadia know all of these skills. To Nadia, they were pretty much useless. Like, who is going to use Pythagorean theorem in their day-to-day life? But she ended up doing it just to make him happy. It's not like she was bad at it, she just detested math.
Sure there was always some right answer, but Nadia's brain wasn't hardwired to understand complicated formulas and worst of all, graphs. None of it made sense to her, she was just bad at math. Which is also why her dad got her a tutor.
Nadia loved her dad as much as the next person but a math tutor? He was crazy if he thought a tutor would save Nadia's Algebra 2 grade from her horrible knowledge on the subject. If anything, a tutor was the last thing Nadia wanted. Just one more person for her to explain her uh... condition to.
Two people knowing was enough for her. Even if one of them didn't know the other even knew his daughter. Nadia wouldn't lie, she knew how weird it might look from the outside, her befriending a grown man. Especially with the circumstances of their meeting.
Nothing would make Nadia forget the moment she almost died that night. She'd been doing her usual thing, roaming the rooftops with music blasting in her earbuds and... maybe killing a pigeon or two here and there. She still isn't sure how she gained his attention, but he was watching her.
At first, she was weirded the hell out. What kid wouldn't be??? Some random white guy in a stupid outfit was following her for like a week, anyone would be weirded out. Nonetheless, she was glad he didn't kill her, because he turned out to be a nice guy in the end.
Nadia sat on the edge of a five story building, heights hardly bothered her anymore. It was ironic how scared she used to be of falling and dying. Now it was second nature to stand near the edge of a building. Nothing really frightened her anymore.
Gravel crunched behind her and Nadia was standing before she could even consider why the gravel was crunching. A man in a red outfit stood in front of her, his face was covered save for his mouth. There were no holes for eyes that caught Nadia's attention. So did the small horns protruding from the front of the helmet.
"Who the hell are you?" She blurted out, curse her lack of thinking.
The man merely tilted his head and took a step forward, she took two back. Nadia stole a glance behind her, the edge was one step away. That meant she was a step away from her certain death. She felt stupid for having left her only means of defense in one of many hiding places. Her hands felt empty without her bow.
Nadia tried to force the memories of combat training toward the forefront of her mind. Only bits and pieces came back. "I won't ask you again, man." Her voice wavered as she tried to think of a way out of this.
There weren't any fire escapes on that side of the building since the road was right there. She could try to rush at him and keep running but Nadia had no idea how fast he was. "You sound younger than I thought." His voice was familiar?
"The fuck does that mean?" She balled her hands into fists. This wouldn't be the first time she had to punch a man in the face.
He took one more step forward and Nadia stuttered back, "What do you want?" She forced steel into her voice. Her knuckles cracked from how hard she held them. Nadia could feel the edge of the building under her heel. Any sudden moment could end her life. She gulped.
"What's up with the bow and arrow you usually have, huh?"
Nadia looked at him, confused as hell. "What?" She sounded exasperated. "Have you been following me or something?" She asked.
"Or something," The stranger replied. "Answer me, kid."
"It's nothing I just– I just shoot pigeons okay? I'm not like a murderer or anything! I'm just a kid, like you said!" She hated how childish she sounded but she didn't know any other way to react in that situation.
"I heard more than just pigeons at the end of your wrath."
None of it made any sense. "Listen man, I don't know what you think you know but I'm just a random teenager. You can go fight crime in your silly costume somewhere else, now let me go."
"I can't do that," He said.
"You can..." Nadia stepped away from the ledge, "And you will." Finally, there was adrenaline coursing through her veins. Faux bravado rushed to her head as she took a deep breath. "Move." She ordered.
The bastard tilted his head once more, she noticed how his ear was facing her. Why's he not looking at me? She wondered. It doesn't matter. Nadia decided rushing him was her only option, all she had was her speed and her size.
Nadia was thankful he wasn't a murderer like she had originally thought. After that first encounter with Matt, she stayed at home for a few weeks. Charles noticed her change in behavior and was nicer during those weeks. She hated that more than the fear she felt after running into who she would soon know was Daredevil.
If her dad found out about that night, he'd probably kill Matt. Nadia weirdly appreciated that thought. Especially considering how he fumbled the bag when she was a kid.
