(42) - Pain and Peggy
NADiA'S POiNT OF ViEW
"And you are?" I refrain from narrowing my eyes.
"Nadia Oakley, Sir." My voice is surprisingly steady as the weight of my hand in Wanda's draws his attention. I internally roll my eyes, of course, out of all the things he notices two girls holding hands. Platonically might I add and I'm pretty sure she and Vision are a thing.
"One of the enhanced?"
I nod, "You could say that." My voice stays steady as the man narrows his eyes at me. I look into his mind and gasp a little under my breath. I let Wanda's hand pull me back into my seat as I look at him with worry. How can anyone carry so much hate?
"Now, if I happened to misplace a few thirty-megaton nukes... there would be consequences. But, when your little team of 'special' individuals loses its members... it's okay? No, it isn't, this is a compromise. We will be reassuring the public of their safety with these accords. This is the middle ground." Thaddeus pushes his finger into the desk, it resulting in a low thump.
I try to mask my face with indifference but I can't stop my eyebrows from creases or stop my lip from quivering. I need to cry, now. "Tell them I'm fine." Wanda nods and I teleport out of the room and into my own. I slam the door shut and fall onto my bed. That nightmare seems everpresent now. As if moments like these are moving us toward the dust and devastation.
"Heimdall, tell Frigga I've advanced a lot in my studies... and that I may be returning soon."
Before I left Asgard Heimdall said if I thought of him he would hear me. I hope he hears this. I close my eyes and try to force myself to sleep. But sleep evades me for what felt like hours, then finally, I fall asleep.
THiRD PERSON POiNT OF ViEW
Wanda sat on Nadia's bed, using her powers to help the girl fall asleep. She wanted to know what was on Nadia's mind and could only read it when Nadia was asleep. As if her body's shield disabled when she needed it most. Wanda set her hands lightly on Nadia's temple and closes her eyes.
Nadia sat up sweating in her dream, she was in a small room. The sounds of shouts and arguments met her ears as she felt a shock zap her body. Nadia's eyes widen when she realizes she has a collar that's like the one Rumlow put on her when they caught her. She couldn't hear what was being shouted but could recognize the voices. They were the voices of her teammates. She can't help the sob that racks through her body, causing another shock.
Her arms were in a metal straitjacket and her skin was icy. "It's the futurist everybody!" Shouts what sounded like Clint. Nadia whimpers as her body shook every time a shock coursed through her blood. Nadia falls over to her side as a familiar face appears in her vision. But this face is cloudy and muddled. Nadia's eyes narrowed as she jumped up in anger, screaming at the unknown face.
Wanda's pushed out of Nadia's mind as Nadia grips her wrist tightly. Nadia's eyes are wide and she looks crazy. "Why would you do that?" Her voice is strained and breathy.
"I'm sorry, I'm worried about you..." Nadia nods and releases her grip on Wanda's wrist.
"They're arguing, let's go see what about." Nadia knew it was about the accords but didn't want to say 'Accords' out loud.
NADiA'S POiNT OF ViEW
"...If we sign this, we surrender our right to choose. What if this panel sends us somewhere we don't think we should go? What if there is somewhere we need to go, and they don't let us? We may not be perfect, but the safest hands are still our own." We walk in the middle of Steve talking and I sit on the loveseat's armrest. Wanda sits in the chair and listens in.
"If we don't do it now, it's gonna happen later. That is factual and it won't be pretty." Tony states while staring Steve down.
"You're saying they'll come for Alina, me, and Nadia..." Wanda quipped quietly.
"We would protect you, all of you." Vision says in his monotone voice. Wanda and I spend a lot of time together with the occasional Vision.
We've been helping each other with our abilities and have both bettered. Natasha sighs, "Maybe Tony's right." Tony's 'mean' facade falls and his jaw drops. "With one hand on the wheel, we can still steer. Take that off–" Sam cuts in, brows low.
"Says the woman who told the government to kiss her ass not even a year ago." Nat nods.
"I know, but, we as a group have made... some very public mistakes. If we can gain their trust again, we should."
Tony shakes his head, "Am I going deaf or did she just agree with me?" I smile a little, I've missed Tony's sarcasm a ton. But now is no time for a reunion.
"I take it back." Nat replies and Tony shakes his pointer fingers.
"No, no, no, you can't retract that. So!" He claps his hands, "That means I win, case closed." I move my gaze from the billionaire and to Steve, he's staring at his phone with his brows furrowed. He stands up abruptly, tossing the accords on the coffee table.
"I have to go."
LONDON - THiRD PERSON POiNT OF ViEW
Nadia agreed to go to London for a woman's funeral. One she never met, only because Steve had asked her to. She didn't understand why he wanted her to go but she agreed nonetheless. She sat beside Sam in a plain black dress. Steve walks in with the other five pallbearers carrying the coffin. It's covered with the Union Jack.
She can see that Steve had been crying and feels sad for him. No one truly significant has died in her life so she can't reach out and relate. All she could is be here. Nadia's eyes move to the altar where a photo of a familiar woman is shown. She's Peggy Carter... the woman from the S.H.I.E.L.D base. "I would like to invite Sharon Carter to come up and say a few words." The priest addresses the cathedral in a solid tone.
A blonde steps up to the podium as Steve sits down on the other side of Nadia. Steve doesn't notice Sharon and Sam nudged Nadia. He jerked his head toward the podium and Nadia nudges Steve and does the same thing Sam did. Sharon glances at Steve before taking a deep breath. "Margaret Carter was known to most as a founder of S.H.I.E.L.D..." She pauses as if to compose herself.
"But I just knew her as aunt Peggy." Steve who realizes that Sharon is the very Sharon who was his neighbor in DC and the Sharon who was 'Agent 13'. The one who helped Fury after he'd been shot. "She had this photo in her office, aunt Peggy next to JFK," She chuckles but there is no humor in it. "as a kid, it was pretty cool... but it was a lot to live up to." Sharon looks at the ground before taking another deep breath.
"That's why I never told anyone we were related." Her eyes switch from the floor and right to Steve. "I asked her once how she managed to master diplomacy and espionage in a time when no one wanted to see a woman succeed at either. And she said, compromise where you can. But where you can't, don't." Nadia looks at Steve and sets her hand on both of his and nods at him.
"Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move... it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in they eye and say 'No, you move.'" Steve's jaw twitches but he knew just what Sharon was talking about. Peggy Carter was one hard tree to move.
