Chapter 5: Cave of Horror

"I've never seen a more barren airport..." said Luke, and I could see where he was coming from.

While the parking lot was so jam-packed with cars that Luke had to leave the car in the middle of the road, the airport was more lifeless than I might've been in September.

Thankfully, though, one private jet remained in the airport and Luke and I boarded it. The private plane looked much nicer than a regular plane. For one thing, I was sure this plane was better than first class. It had leather seats, a lavish bathroom and a drinks area. I was impressed. Luke didn't look fazed.

After we had packed our stuff in it, Luke said, "It's gonna be harder to fly without a control room."

"But if there's nothing else in the air, it'll be much easier." I assured him.

After Luke went to the cockpit, the plane started taking off. I immediately got nervous. I had only been on a plane once and it was a scary experience. Back then, I nearly threw up when the plane took off and my ears...well, they felt like hell. Also not to mention that I accidentally swallowed the cotton balls my mom gave me.

As soon as that memory came in my mind, I started feeling homesick. I mean, I had lived alone for quite a while but this was a different feeling. I didn't even notice the plane complete the take-off till I heard Luke's voice booming through the speaker, "Ladies and Gentlemen, we have completed our take-off and are on-route to the Dead Sea, Israel. Also, I'm hungry."

After I let that sink in, Luke yelled, "I'M HUNGRY, WALKER! FEED THE KAIJU OR-" The voice broke off.

I opened up our food bag (Luke insisted on taking a separate bag for food) and took an abnormally large bag of chips. I took it and went into the cockpit.

"Why did your voice break off?" I asked Luke.

"Eh, I thought it would be entertaining to break off my voice mid-sentence." he said matter-of-factly.

"Oh yeah, I was rolling on the floor." I rolled my eyes instead.

"Yeah. I'm not gonna eat that entire bag of chips by myself, by the way, not unless you want me to fall asleep. And I suggest getting some sleep. We're only gonna reach tomorrow."

"We can take turns flying." I offered.

"Oh, you can fly? This ain't like taking turns of watch. Seriously, get some sleep."

So I returned to my seat, munched on the humongous amount of chips I took from Luke and fell asleep the second my eyes closed.

It was pitch black. "You have to trust me, Avalon. He is very, very angry. He knows he can't hurt me. So, he'll hurt you." said a powerful female voice.

"He can't hurt me either, mum." a small boy's voice spoke, "I have your powers."

"But you don't have my experience. My wisdom. You don't really have what I do." said the female voice firmly. "He'll kill you, Avalon. You must hide."

"Fine." The boy's voice sounded reluctant. "What about dad?"

"Your dad.." the female voice became bitter. Then, fixing her voice, she replied, "You don't need him. My pack will take care of you."

"But I need my dad." the boy whined.

The female voice tried to sweeten her voice but instead, sounded like a gruff bear, "You don't need anyone. You can take care of yourself. But till that day, I'll protect you."

***********************************************
The darkness faded and I woke up with a start. The plane was shaking violently. I saw Olivera, who was sitting on my lap and watching the cockpit.

She suddenly jerked her head towards me and jumped off my lap. I stood up and immediately got swept sideways and hit the armrest of a seat. Before I could recover, the plane tilted right, but this time, I held onto the seat for dear life.

Then suddenly, the plane jerked upward and I got pushed forward. I nearly fainted but managed to get up. The plane was stable now. Since I didn't like my brain turned to spaghetti, believe me when I say I like scrambled eggs better, I locked myself to my seat, which didn't feel so lavish anymore, now that I just banged my head on its armrest. I looked out the window and saw clouds. (I don't know what I expected to see.) But then, the plane started lowering. I thought I was still seeing clouds before I realized I was seeing blocks of salt.

The plane lowered on a small piece of land, thankfully with my brains still intact, and I stepped out, Olivera behind me. This place really was in the middle of nowhere. All around me was water which looked straight out of a swimming pool, but with salt. There wasn't as much salt as I expected it to be, so tons of salt must be at the seashore. And a small island in the middle of the sea, with coconut and palm trees.

The plane's door lowered again and Luke stepped out, looking really dizzy.

"You okay, Seabell?" I yelled.

Luke showed a thumps up and puked near a coconut tree or palm tree, whatever.

"What happened in there?" I pointed to the plane.

"Umm..." Luke hesitated.

"Scobell....What did you do??" I asked, more seriously.

"Well...I accidentally fell asleep. But don't worry, I had the plane on auto-pilot. But I accidentally kicked something (must have been a lever) and the plane flew down. I couldn't let it crash so-"

"So you swerved the plane around." I guessed.

"Well, yeah." Luke said sheepishly.

Suddenly, the air became colder. "Does this happen often?"

Luke looked really spooked, "We're near the cave about now."

As we walked towards the cave, I asked Luke, "Why do people come here anyways?"

"Well," he answered, "Once you get past the mental trauma and look closely, might I add, you get... answers. But we wouldn't know that because anyone who has gone in has never come out sane. Still think we should go in?"

"Are you seriously asking that now?"

"Fair enough." he said, petting Olivera, who didn't like it very much.

The more we stepped towards the cave, the colder the air got. And it wasn't the 'freezing, cool' cold. It was the 'sending a shiver down my spine and dampen the mood' cold. Then suddenly, the cave appeared in front of us.

"Listen, I think I should go in there alone." I said randomly.

"WHAT?" Luke yelled, "NO! There's no way I'm letting you go in alone. Screw the signs. We're going back!" Luke turned around but I stopped him.

"Look, I can't drag you in as well, if it is as scary as you say."

"I refuse to let you go in there alone." Luke's face was mixed with loathing and worry, which gave him a weird expression.

"If the place is as bad as you say, I am NOT  dragging you in, Seabell." I said firmly.

"Oh, now you choose to believe it." Luke gave a fake laugh, "We're going in together or we're not."

"No, I've got to go in alone."

"What, you feel heroic? Like a soldier, trying to 'protect' me? You really are insane." Luke looked like he was experiencing deja vu.

The cold air mixed with the cold stare Luke was giving me didn't make the situation better. I thought he was gonna do anything to prevent me from going in but he did something I didn't expect.

"Right...Right. The cave demands a blood sacrifice before you go in." He punched my face hard.

I collapsed, clutching my mouth, which was filled with blood. "WHA HA HAIL?" I yelled, as Luke walked away, Olivera trying to block his way.

I got up, spat out the blood and drank water from my bottle. I could feel my mouth all swelled up. I turned around and slowly walked towards the cave, whose opening was blocked by a boulder. I tried prying it open but it was a no-go.

So, just to humor the very agressive suggestion I got, I spat some of my blood on the boulder. It flew open at once. I turned around one last time to see if Luke was gonna come back, but I couldn't even see him. So, I stepped in the cave.

The moment I stepped in, the boulder rolled back and sealed the cave shut. A dim light spread across the cave, like that of a lightbulb. I walked forward to see something written on the wall. 'October 31st.' The moment I read that, the dim light turned off and it was pitch black.

"Alex Walker." A small girl's voice came from behind, giggling. "Alex Walker."

I slowly turned around to see nothing. Suddenly, a large pair of white, blank eyes stared at me. What the creature was, I didn't know. What I did know was that it roared and I stumbled back, screaming and fell into a large pit. I landed with a thud and suddenly light came back again.

I was in a room filled with mirrors, all around me. The light flickered and in front of me was a little girl standing, a mirror the only thing separating us. The girl was grinning. Then, her pupils rolled to the back of her head and her teeth grew to a ridiculous level. Her limbs became longer and thinner. She looked ferociously monstrous.

Without a moment's notice, she started violently banging her head on the mirror. She banged her head over and over again and the glass started cracking. She momentarily stopped. Then, she rammed her head really hard and the glass shattered.

My heart was racing so fast I could barely speak. I just sputtered, "No.. Help." Then she started crawling towards me in such a weird way it would've almost been funny if it wasn't happening right in front of me. I screeched and the entire room shattered as I plunged into darkness once more.

I woke up on my bed, sweating. Was it all just a dream? I had never gone anywhere?

I got out of my room and went down to the kitchen, where my mom was cooking. "Breakfast, honey?" She asked in a joyful voice.

"M-mo-mom?" I stuttered.

She turned her head around a full 180° degrees and smiled at me, her eyes having no emotion. Then she started spinning her head over and over again until she stopped.

Out of the blue, her entire body exploded and the kitchen and I got smothered in blood. I closed my eyes, the place where my 'mom' was, still spewing blood everywhere.

I got an excruciating pain tingling throughout my body. I collapsed; the pain increased. Surely, whatever was giving me such pain would kill me soon. Death would be far lighter.

When the pain subsided, I opened my eyes to see Luke muttering, "C'mon. C'mon. Wake up now."

When he saw my eyes open, he sighed "Oh, thank goodness. You're awake." He heaved me up.

"It's over?" I asked innocently.

"Yeah. Man, I told you not to go in there alone. Gosh, you're so dense, Alex."

I sensed something wrong. "You walked away when I went in the cave. And you don't call me Alex."

"Yeah, but you were gone so-" Luke hands caught fire out of nowhere. Luke winced and gasped,  though not as loud as I did. With each passing second, it looked like the fire, instead of burning him, was slowly sucking his soul. Luke started looking really tired and collapsed. Then, I saw something behind him...A creature.

The thing looked straight out of a horror movie, with four thin arms and legs and no eyes or ears. It had a large monstrous mouth and it looked like it had recently been toasted.

"Luke.." I almost started tearing up when the creature screeched and I, reluctantly, ran as fast as I could.

Pitch black once more. This time, there was no light. So I turned on the flashlight in my phone (I honestly even forgot I had a phone). I was in a giant hall. When I flashed the light in front of me, there was a corpse, so graphic that I just couldn't describe it. Just imagine a dead body with lots of rot, gore and blood. Now multiply it by 10 and it still wouldn't be as graphic as the corpse in front of me.

Suddenly, multiple lights turned on in front of me, with more mutilated corpses, each one much worse than the last. I couldn't even throw up, it was so disgusting.

I ran as fast as I could but my entire body started throbbing again, this time more painfully than ever. I felt a more focused pain on my neck, like someone had stabbed me there. I felt the ground beneath me break and I fell but the pain did not stop.

After a moment, or two, or an eternity of pain, it stopped and I opened my eyes. I was still falling. There were boulders every where, big and small. Other than the rocks, the entire place was red.

I reached out to one of the rocks and I caught it, but my shoulder dislocated. I shrieked as a *pop* went off in my arm. With my healthy arm, I climbed onto the rock.

I tried to examine the place. A few of the rocks looked oddly like Luke's scroll. But the hurt in my arm was too painful.

A few shrieks went off and a bunch of black goo dripped on the boulder I was standing on. When the goo came down, the entire boulder turned to fire, then water, then a pool of blood, and a colony of bats, as I fell down to another rock.

The goo turned to a thousand different monsters that I had never seen. I was absolutely horrified and I tried to run but I wasn't that fast.

"I just want it to end.." I ran towards a random direction, the freaky brutes right behind me.

As I ran, I heard buzzing, whispering, yelling, shrieking, muttering, crooning and all kinds of voices saying only one thing. "October 31st. The last day. Scroll of Destiny. Guide."

I saw a light ahead. An exit? Excited, I sped up and raced to the end. But the opening was starting to close. It was diminishing little by little. I couldn't let it close. It was the only way out.

Pointy pillars started to fall from above. But then I did a few kinds of gymnastics that I didn't even know I could do, much less with a broken shoulder. I jumped from boulder to boulder. I bit back a sob and carried on.

The ground beneath me started to shake and crack, probably with all the behemoths behind me. But I didn't risk looking back.

In a flash, the ground beneath me exploded and as I was hurled off my feet, everything went dark.
