To Steal a Weeping Widow

Writer: BritishGravity

Genre: Romance mystery

Chapters I read: 6 chapters and the prologue

Beginning thoughts:

The book feels like a mystery novel with romance elements rather than the other way around. Either way that's fine. I'll have to go through the genres anyway and change up what I'll review and not review as I did originally put down I don't review mysteries.

Blurb

I loved your blurb. It's straight to the point, it doesn't reveal too much but enough to know what the book is about. The only thing I would personally say is make it first person, so it would match with your POV in the story.

Story

I've only read a short bit of your book and honestly, I feel like everything you have written has its place and purpose. The story flows well despite probably being a tad on the slower pace side, but with the exposition given, and the character dynamics and worldbuilding, they definitely make up for it.

Writing

I loved your writing style. It has a blend of showing and telling (though more telling) and the metaphors and similes were just great. I will say the metaphors do get a bit much sometimes and it can make your writing more flowery than it needs to be.

Another thing I will mention that I did see some redundant words at times. Words that can be taken out and it won't change a thing. I didn't actually write any sentences down because I've been so busy, however, the redundant word I see usually is "was".

Characters

I like Eleanor as a character, she is passionate, hardworking, snarky and just overall a realistic character who I can understand and follow in the story.

August is another character I liked very much and same with Geraldine, though both with different reasons.

Setting

I didn't mention this in my beginning thoughts as I thought it would be better here, but I enjoyed the little snippets in the beginning of the stolen artworks and their values, it matches with the tone of the story and it's just enough to quickly see it and then get on with the story.

I also liked your descriptions of the scenery around Eleanor. It really sets the scene and gives a feel of where we are.

Overall

I absolutely enjoyed reading this book and will hopefully continue to read more of it when I can.
