𖦹                                              As one might have already been able to gather, balls and dances were an absolute necessity for the ton. The women would all dress up in their best dresses, adorned with their [ very expensive ] family jewellery, clutching onto each other as to not trip and fall in their heels. The mothers would be looking relentlessly for a match for their children, whether it be love or not, while the daughters would either be looking for an escape route out, or indulging in their Mamas' somewhat futile attempts to matchmake them.

The men, on the other hand, had a fair more simpler job. They simply had to look happy to be there, and find a wife as quickly as possible. Naturally, they too had their Mamas' in the corner, rooting for them to get married, but many of them didn't pay attention to them. They would instead focus their attentions to whichever girl they were planning on courting, asking all of the necessary questions to try and find their match.

Not that Georgina Carlisle could relate to any of the above, of course. Sure, she had attended most of the balls hosted by various different higher class members of society, though they had only been so she could play the harp. It wasn't like Georgina wanted to know what it was like to be a rich woman living in London, either; on the contrary, she held a strong dislike for the idea. 

For Georgina Carlisle was perfectly content in her own life to be looking for a way out, thank you very much! Sure, it would've been nice to somehow have claims to a large sum of money, to help with her father's sickness, or to have the feeling that you're being watched for the right reasons [ not including her musical abilities ], but still. 

Perhaps the word 'content' isn't entirely the right way to describe a person like Georgina Carlisle, either. An enigma to most, many of the people at these social events would find themselves wondering who exactly the girl is. A presumably lower-class woman who can play the harp, but was that all? What else did she have to offer? Though none would ever get far enough to find out; any inklings to her true character were hidden behind her withering gaze and scowl, as to stop them from trying to make conversation with her. It was a general consensus that Georgina Carlisle was going to have to remain a mystery, as to protect both their shins and their pride.

Benedict Bridgerton, surprisingly, shared the same sentiment as Georgina, though naturally his came from a different perspective. He was practically strong-armed into attending the events by his mother, who longed for her second-eldest son to find a love match, just as she did for the rest of her children. He hated the watchful glances given to him by the Mamas of the ton, all of whom wanted him to court their daughter. He saw no reason to attend the balls, and always sought a way out.

That is, until his sister made her debut. The beautiful Daphne Bridgerton was proclaimed by Lady Whisteldown to be the 'diamond' of the season, and now the family's attendance at all of the social events of the season seemed to be much more important than before. Benedict, though, had still seen the gatherings to be a waste of time. Until he had listened to, or rather seen, the music being played.

The musical group were all very talented, but it had been Georgina who had caught his eye. She was fully concentrated on her instrument, playing no attention to anything but it, yet he was entranced. He couldn't place his finger on what it was about her, exactly, but he knew one thing for sure: he now had a reason for attending the balls of the season.

Georgina Carlisle was, after all, the most beautiful of mysteries. And one which Benedict Bridgerton was determined to unravel.
