Chapter 3: Soos and Melody Come to Visit
I woke with a start.
My blanket was tightly wrapped halfway around me. I wiggled out of it and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. I got up from the recliner and went to the kitchen. Someone was cooking something and it smelled good.
Mabel was standing at the stove, cooking. I smiled. "Morning," I said tiredly.
Mabel smiled at me over her shoulder. "Morning. Glad you're up. Can you get the orange juice and and milk out of the fridge?"
"Sure," I said. I walked over to the fridge and grabbed the drinks. I turned towards the table and found Dipper still fast asleep at it.
"This'll probably be the best sleep he's had in a while," Mabel said. "He's been walking around like a zombie ever since Stan disapeared..."
I could hear it slightly in her voice. She missed Stan. She was trying to stay strong, but she didn't have to in front of me. I understood.
I set the jugs of milk and juice on the table, careful not to wake Dipper up. I sat down across from him as Mabel walked over with a plate of pancakes. She set them in front of me. "Could you grab the plates from over there?" Mabel asked. I nodded and grabbed three plates from the cupboard while Mabel got the sausage from the stove and the syrup.
About halfway through breakfast, Dipper woke up.
"Morning, bro," Mabel said, handing him a plate of food.
Dipper yawned, rubbing his eyes. "Mabel, you knew it was my turn to cook."
Mabel shrugged. "I was getting hungry."
"Well you should've woke me up," Dipper shot right back.
"Aw, Dip," Mabel said, punching her brother lightly in the shoulder. "You can't keep going on like this."
Dipper sighed. "I know."
Mabel handed Dipper the syrup. "Good."
We ate in silence. But it was a comfortable silence. No one really felt like talking.
As we where doing the dishes, the doorbell rang. We looked at each other quizzically. Dipper went to see who it was as Mabel and I finished up the dishes.
"Guys! Come here!" Dipper yelled.
Mabel and I glanced at each other before we went to see who it was.
Soos was standing in the doorway with a lady close behind him. He smiled at us. "Oh, nice to see ya Kayla."
"You too," I said with a smile.
"Melody," Soos said, talking to the lady behind him. "You obviously know Dipper and Mabel, but you haven't met Kayla. Kayla, this is my wife Melody."
I waved. "Hey, Melody."
She waved back to me.
"We got your message, dude," Soos said, turning to Dipper. "It sounded urgent."
Dipper sighed. "You should come in so we can talk."
~
"Wait, let me get this straight," Soos said. "Mr. Pines fell into the machine that his brother came out of all those years ago?"
Mabel and Dipper nodded.
"And you kids have been on your own all this time?" Melody asked.
Mabel and Dipper nodded.
"I'm so sorry we couldn't get here sooner," Soos said. "We had to get plane tickets, get off work. Ugh. Being an adult is the worst!"
"Its okay," Mabel said. "We're fifteen. I'm pretty sure we can take are of ourselves for a week or two. But, we should probably get some more food. We had to break into the apocolyps meat stash a few times."
Soos stood up, but Melody pushed him back down and stood herself. "I'll go and get some food," she said. "You know these kids better then I do and you'll just get all the expensive things and snack food."
Soos sighed. "Alright."
"I'll show you where Stan keeps his emergency money," Mabel said, leading Melody into the living room.
"When'd you get here?" Soos asked me.
"Last night," I said. "I had to finish up school before I got here. We had to make up a ton of days because of all the snow we got."
Dipper nodded. "Let's get to work."
"On what?" Soos asked.
"I think we need to fix the machine," Dipper said. "If Stan's alive, we need to find him."
I smiled. "Great idea. Soos, you're a handyman, right?"
"I-I don't know dudes," Soos said. "I'm not too good with all this technology stuff."
"Well, you fixed that laptop," Dipper said.
"Yeah, but-"
"Come on, Soos," I said. "At least look at it."
"Fine," Soos said.
Mabel walked in. "Melody's on her way. Whacha talkin' 'bout?"
"Come on, Mabel," Dipper said. "Let's go fix the machine."
"Really?" Mabel asked. "Why? You didn't think it was a good idea before."
"Well, we couldn't fix it on our own, could we?"
"I guess not."
"Besides," Dipper said. "How hard could it be?"
