Appa landed as Toph immediately jumped off the bison and landed on her knees to touch dirt again.
"Land, flying is a nightmare," Toph groaned laying on the ground as everyone started unload seeing the camp of water tribe and white lotus close by. Zuko held his twins hands as they walked down appas tail together and Zuko went back up to help unload.
"Yea I rather just walk," aito crouched down to the blind bender agreeing.
"But it was so fun!" Ren jumped on his brothers back excitedly, but made them both fall to the ground.
"Boys! Catch!" Zuko called tossing their bags to them and Ren jumped back to his feet to catch his bag but ducked before aito's bag hit him.
"You need better aim pops," Ren looked behind him.
"Is appa staying here?" Aito asked as he grabbed his bag and went to hold his fathers hand and stayed close.
"He's just going to rest up while we go to the camp," Sokka smiled at him and the child nodded.
Sokka and Suki walked ahead as everyone followed to the camp, the twins held each others hand as Zuko walked behind them, the twins were anxious whenever they held each others hand, never being this far from home and going to meet so many new people. They stayed close.
"Hey kids!" They heard from ahead and saw Bumi waving while Hakoda was waiting for his children.
"Good to see you again Katara," Hakoda walked up and hugged his daughter tightly.
"You too dad, I missed you," Katara hugged him tightly around the shoulders.
Hakoda looked over seeing Zuko and the twins, aito perked up waving at the chief, ren gasped excitedly as well. Hakoda smiled back at his grandsons but looked at Katara concerned.
"Have you told the boys?" Hakoda whispered to her.
"No, Sokka doesn't know either, only toph, Zuko doesn't want them knowing yet," Katara whispered back a little guilty for keeping such a secret.
"Well who are these little warriors? Zuko got some twins?" Hakoda walked over and knelt in front of the boys as Zuko let out a relieved breath.
"Aito and Ren," Zuko told him trying to play it off.
"Nice to meet you two, look like a strong young men, bet you can really steer a ship," Hakoda held out his hand and aito giggled shaking his hand.
"I've never been on a boat," aito smiled as Ren came over excited at the familiar man.
"Can we go on a boat?!" Ren asked.
"Well as chief Hakoda of the southern water tribe I think I can arrange that," he chuckled at the boys.
"Do you have like a navy and everything?" Ren asked wide eyes.
"And everything," Hakoda nodded as he stood up.
Aito hugged the man in greeting as they have in the past, Hakoda smiled hugging his grandson back, he opened his arms and ren jumped to hug him as well.
"So who's the lucky lady you knocked up kiddo?" Bumi cackled as Zuko blushed embarrassed at the bluntness of the king.
"She's not around," Zuko shrugged but glanced at Katara. "It wasn't anything to special,"
Her eye twitched in irritation, he knew it would get under her skin.
"What happens if your dad gets a girlfriend and she try's to be your mama? It will happen eventually?" Bumi raised a brow as they walked into the camp.
"That won't be happening," aito said flatly. Zuko smiled to himself a little trying to not laugh, he could tell aito already didn't like the goofy king as Ren was confused.
"Stubborn little lads," Hakoda snickered to Zuko.
"I wonder who they got it from," Zuko smirked back. Katara whipped her head around at the two men and they tried hiding their laughter from her.
"Since when are you two buddy's?" She scoffed.
"I like babysitting once in a while, and I bring pretty good birthday presents," Hakoda smiled at his daughter. Her face flushed a little in embarrassment and a hint of shame that her father had more of a relationship with the boys than her. Yet they would never call him grandpa unless they knew.
"You know He was the prince of the fire nation?" Toph walked side by side with the two men.
"So when fire nation goes down I have two little princes to show the world," Hakoda teased back as Zuko rolled his eyes.
"If that ever happens they're going to be more successful with taking over the world than someone else I know, they're little demon spawns," Zuko crossed his arms.
"Yea we are!" Ren punched the air as he held aito's hand to pull along.
"Dude those kids are so funny I freaking love them," Sokka threw his arm around zukos shoulder with a smile.
"They're tyrants, it's hard not to love them," Zuko chuckled watching his boys hold each other's hands as they walked ahead but was behind Katara. Minds full of hope and adventure before anyone can snuff it out, he hope no one ever does... a child's mind was so refreshing to hear their world from their perspective...
"So where's uncle?" Zuko asked.
"Over by the center camp grounds," Hakoda motioned.
"Grandpa!" Ren called as aito stayed back when the golden eye boy ran ahead.
"Are the other masters going to like us?" Aito asked noticing there was no other children around and elders glanced their way.
"They'll love you," Zuko reassured but heard ren yelling for his grandpa.
"Ren I need you here for a minute," he called over and ren was still running around but came back eventually.
"not a lot of people know about you two, for your safety, but your going to be staying here for a little, with your grandfather," he explained and they nodded. Ren's excitement was starting to fade into anxiety at the idea of being left alone with strangers. Aito was staying calm but there was also anxiety in his eyes.
"You're leaving?" Aito asked.
"No I'll be here too but I might have to go do adult things so I need you on your best behavior, no screaming and watch where you're running," he said seriously.
"I make no promises, we'll make dumplings when we get back home," he smiled at his boys.
"Ah there are my favorite boys!" They heard a loud laugh and the twins spun around.
"Grandpa iroh!" Aito ran first to hug the old man.
"Haha aito I missed you," Iroh grunted when he picked up the boy and hugged him tightly as aito laughed.
"Grandpaaaaa!" Ren ran into the old man's legs.
"Oof and there's the other one, I missed you too ren," Iroh smiled brightly rubbing the back of Rena head as he was unable to pick up both children at the same time. He set aito down and crouched to hug both now.
"Taking care of your father for me? Staying out of trouble?" Iroh ruffled the kids hair.
"Certainly letting him put on a few pounds I see," he laughed patting his own belly as Zuko frowned. He wasn't as scrawny as he used to be as a teen.
"Gee, thanks," Zuko said flatly.
"Maybe you'll end up more like me than I thought," the old man chuckled tapping his nephews tummy. Zuko pouted waving him away.
"So you were able to bring all five of you back? I didn't believe you Toph," pakku looked at the blind girl impressed seeing the masters that trained the avatar and the non benders that were just as respected.
"And two more!" Toph beamed brightly.
"Two? The children?" Pakku looked behind Zuko and iroh.
"Prince zuko... are those..." Pakku blinked wide eyes as aito hid behind ren a little.
"Prince? I thought he was lying," ren crossed his arms raising a dark brow.
"My name is Ren," the gold eye twin said finally.
"I'm aito," the blue eye one waved softly.
"This is no place for children," Pakku frowned looking at Katara and Toph.
"Especially children of the first born of the fire lord," he narrowed his eyes.
Aito stepped back now scared of the tone, ren didn't like it either and ran back over to Zuko to feel protected. Aito was frozen in his tracks as other masters stared at the children unsure.
"Watch yourself master Pakku," Zuko glared as he picked up the boy. Ren held onto his shoulders and hid his face away.
"I have nothing against you prince Zuko nor your little ones, this just isn't the place for children of the fire nation no less," Pakku shrugged but Katara elbowed her master.
"I've never been to the fire nation," aito mustered up all his courage to speak back.
"Don't be mean," he frowned but was obviously still afraid.
Another master came over to the frightened boy and knelt down to him holding his hand out.
"An honor to meet you Prince aito, I am master Jong jong, i use to be an admiral of the fire nation," the elderly man smiled kindly as aito took his hand to shake.
"Thank you sir," aito felt more at ease.
"Ai," zuko clicked his teeth at him and aito nodded understanding. He changed to bow to the master and jong jong smile very proudly.
"Very good," Jong jong stood up and bowed back to him.
"Respectful boy," he smiled back at Zuko and Iroh.
"Shall we continue, Prince Zuko you've missed many years in this war and I understand why, but there's much we all must discuss together," Pakku sighed waving them off and Zuko nodded as aito held his hand now.
"Let's get to work," Zuko rolled his eyes following everyone.
