We Both Can't Have Mitch (part 2)

Kirstie was tired, so after she arrived for her half of the week with Mitch, they both went to bed.

Kirstie wanted to sleep in Mitch's bed with him. He agreed. Mitch felt like he owed Kirstie a good half-week.

Thankfully, Kirstie gave Mitch some space. She must've seen his hesitation when she asked if she could sleep with him.

The two slept with their backs turned to each other.

Well, Kirstie slept.

Mitch kept thinking about everything that could go wrong.

Mitch hardly slept a wink thanks to all those thoughts.

What if I pick Kirstie and it ruins my friendship with Scott? Vice versa?

There were a few more frightening fantasies but that particular one was the one that plagued Mitch's mind the most.

He was scared out of his mind. Maybe this wasn't the best idea...

Before he knew it, the sun was filtering through his window.

Kirstie stirred and woke up. "Good morning, Mitch." She greets groggily.

"Good morning, Kirst." The brunet replied. "What do you want for breakfast?"

Kirstie shrugged. "I don't know why but I'm in a Pop-Tart kind of mood."

Mitch chuckled. "I might have some in the pantry."

"Cool." Kirstie says, getting out of the bed and stretching. "I'll go check."

Kirstie walks out of the bedroom.

Mitch listened to the sound of her bare feet on the hardwood floor and sighed heavily. He loved Kirstie, she was his best friend, but now their relationship was in jeopardy just because he couldn't figure out his own feelings.

He dragged himself out of bed and shuffled to the kitchen, where Kirstie was still searching for Pop-Tarts. "No luck?" The tenor asked.

"Not yet." Kirstie sighed. "Aha! There they are! Ooh, strawberry!" She smiles as she pulls out the box.

Mitch smiled and began to make his own breakfast, even though he wasn't hungry. He picked at a bowl of Cocoa Puffs while Kirstie was scarfing down Pop-Tart after Pop-Tart.

"Are you feeling okay, Mitch?" Kirstie asked. "You're not really eating."

"I'm just not hungry. I'm actually pretty anxious about all this..."

Kirstie gave him a sympathetic smile. "I bet. Is there anything I can do?"

Mitch shook his head. "I'll be all right." He put the bowl by the sink and smiled. "Now, what do you want to do?"

Kirstie took another bite of a Pop-Tart and chewed thoughtfully. "It's Sunday, and you can't do much on Sundays." She said after swallowing the breakfast pastry. "Maybe we can just stay here and watch old movies and TV shows. A lazy Sunday."

"All right. Sounds good. You can go pick out the movie, I don't care."

Kirstie nods and walks to the living room and to the bookcase where I kept all my movies. "How does Lilo & Stitch sound, Mitch?" She called.

"That's fine." Mitch called back.

Mitch walked into the living room and saw Kirstie putting the disc in the player. "I haven't watched this movie in forever." She says.

"Me neither." Mitch replies, sitting down on the couch.

Kirstie plopped down next to Mitch, cuddling up to him.

Mitch put his arm around her.

They spent the whole morning and afternoon like that, cuddling and watching Disney movies.

Mitch didn't really pay attention to the movie. He was trying to figure out how he felt about Kirstie.

They dated in high school, but they had broken up since they knew high school romances hardly ever last.

They remained friends, but Mitch had always had a crush on her. He always wondered if Kirstie still had a crush on him, and his wishful thinking turned out to be true when Kirstie confessed her feelings during a late night talk.

He remembered it so clearly.

Kirstie couldn't sleep, and Mitch had lost track of time on Tumblr. He didn't know it was 1 am until Kirstie knocked on his door.

Mitch opened the door and saw Kirstie rubbing her eyes with the sleeve of her sweatshirt which was far too big for her. She looked up at him with tired eyes and asked if she could stay with him.

He let her in, remembering to close his laptop and put it up so he could pay attention to Kirstie.

It was around 4:30 as Kirstie was beginning to fall asleep.

"Thanks for staying with me, Mitch. You've always been a great friend."

Mitch fought the urge to cringe at the word friend.

"But," Mitch sat up a bit straighter as Kirstie continued. "To be honest, I've always wanted us to be more than friends, you know?"

Mitch grinned. "Y-yeah. Me too." He chuckled. He was so relieved and overjoyed as he was granted with this knowledge. Kirstie reciprocated his feelings!

Kirstie grinned back. "That's good." She sighs as her eyes drifted closed. She snuggled closer to him and her breaths evened out as she was taken by sleep.

Mitch kissed the top of her head as he felt his eyes close as well.

Having her next to him felt so right then.

Now, it felt... weird.

Mitch couldn't figure out what was so different between then and now.

Back then he had started to lose all the weight. Back then they were still gradually building a fan base. Back then Kirstie's hair was black and long as it was naturally.

Now he had lost all the weight. Now they had a huge fan base, gold and platinum records, a Grammy, and so much more. Now Kirstie's hair is short and light blonde.

Back then, he didn't know about Scott's feelings for him.

Was that the main factor in all this? Did this feel weird because he knew there was someone else who like liked him?

Mitch shook his head. He doesn't need to be thinking about Scott right now. Right now is his time with Kirstie. He should be worrying about her, not the person at the other end of the rope in this nasty game of tug-o-war.

Finding Nemo ended and Kirstie moved over a bit to stretch. "I'm kind of hungry." She says, glancing down at her stomach.

"Yeah, me too." Mitch replies, stretching as well. "I can make some ramen."

Kirstie smiles a bit. "Now I'm remembering our time in Japan."

Mitch smiles back. "I'll go make the ramen. Unless, you want to help, of course."

"I will!" Kirstie chimes, getting up off the couch.

They walked to the kitchen. Kirstie grabbed the ramen packets and Mitch retrieved a pot and began to fill it with water.

While they waited for the water to boil, they remembered their time in Japan.

It was when they were there for the On My Way Home Tour.

"You looked kawaii in those outfits, girl." Mitch reflected. "You were slaying the scene."

"Man, I loved Japan." Kirstie sighed. "Japan was a lot of fun. I really hope we can go there again some time."

"Same." Mitch replied.

The water was now boiling and Kirstie put in the noodles and the flavoring.

They sat at the table and ate in silence.

Once they were done, they did the same thing they did before, cuddling and Disney movies. The same after dinner until they realized how late it was.

Monday they wandered aimlessly around LA, shopping and eating at little cafés.

Kirstie held Mitch's hand most of that day.

He felt nothing.

That night, he tried to think of why he suddenly had next to no feelings for Kirstie.

Is it all the time we're spending together? He thought. I mean, we already spend a lot of time together, and I had feelings for her then. Why not now?

He kept thinking about it into he fell into a restless sleep.

~

Kirstie woke him up Tuesday morning.

He groaned. "What time is it?"

"9:30."

Mitch sighed as he sat up in bed and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. "What do you want to do today, Kirst?" He inquired sleepily.

Kirstie hummed. "Maybe we could catch a movie or something?"

"At 9:30 in the morning?"

"No, of course not! I meant later, silly goose." Kirstie giggled.

"I was being sarcastic." Mitch replied.

Kirstie stopped giggling and suddenly became very intrigued by her feet. "Oh." She said simply.

Mitch got out of bed and brushed some hair out of Kirstie's face. "What movie do you want to see tonight?"

Kirstie smiled a little. "Paper Towns?"

Mitch smiled. "It's John Green. What could go wrong?"

They decided to go to the 7 o'clock showing, so they had roughly 8 hours to kill before they needed to leave for the movie.

They spent most of that time just relaxing on the couch and just talking.

Kirstie made pancakes for breakfast, and they ordered a pizza for lunch. They ate the leftover slices for dinner.

They screamed Ariana Grande songs in the car on the way to the movie theater.

When they got to the theater, they bought their tickets and concessions.

Kirstie held his hand throughout the entirety of the movie.

He still felt nothing.

"Tomorrow," he thought, "I'm gonna take her on the most romantic date ever. And if I don't feel anything then, it's decided."

Mitch carefully got out of bed and went out into the living room.

He grabbed his laptop and sat down on the couch.

He opened up Google and began searching.

~

He stayed up all night looking up romantic date ideas and planning the last few hours he would spend with Kirstie before it would rotate to Scott.

It was 5:30 in the morning and Mitch began to make Kirstie's breakfast.

He began with eggs, sunny side up, just the way she likes it.

After he cracked the eggs into the skillet, he placed bread in the toaster.

He prayed that nothing would burn as he began to make bacon.

He also prayed that all the commotion going on in the kitchen wouldn't wake Kirstie.

Mitch put all the food items on a plate and set them on a wooden tray. He hesitated before entering the bedroom, realizing it was just past 6 am.

"Wakey, wakey, eggs-y bake-y!" He sang softly as he walked in.

Kirstie made a small sound as she sat up. "Mitch," She said when she saw the tray in his hands. "You didn't have to."

"Exactly. But, I wanted to." Mitch replied, setting the tray on her lap.

Kirstie chuckled slightly, shaking her head as she smiled. "What did I do to deserve you, Mitch Grassi?"

"Nothing." He said as he sat down next to her. "You were just being you."

They made small talk as Kirstie ate her breakfast in bed.

Mitch, yet again, felt nothing.

But he didn't worry about that all that much. He still had a full morning to spark something inside him so he can know how he truly feels about his best friend.

"Now you need to go get ready for the most romantic morning of your life." Mitch said, kissing Kirstie's brow.

Kirstie nodded, smiling, and getting out of the bed and going to take a shower.

Mitch jumped out of bed and got ready himself.

He hadn't worn his suit in a long time, and he knew that Kirstie knew that, so this would make her know that he had something special planned.

Mitch heard the shower water shut off. He straightened his tie and walked out of the room and into the living room.

He ran through the plan in his head quickly. Kirstie would come out all dressed up and ready for the day, he would take her to the Griffith Observatory. While they're there, Avi and Kevin would help set up the backyard.

Mitch smiled to himself. Kirstie would be blown away.

He heard Kirstie making her way into the living room. Her short blonde hair was curled into tight corkscrews. She wore a stunning black-and-white, lacy dress with silver hoop earrings and black flats.

"You look great." Mitch complimented with a grin.

"Thanks. You do, too." Kirstie replied, grinning as well.

They locked arms and walked out of the house.

"So, where to, Mitch?" Kirstie asked as they got in the car.

"It's a surprise."

"The Griffith Observatory?!" Kirstie squealed as their intended destination came into view. "I've always wanted to go there but with Pentatonix and stuff I was never able to. Thank you so much, Mitchie!"

Kirstie leaned over to peck his cheek.

He felt nothing.

They held hands as they wandered the structure.

He felt nothing.

Kirstie kissed him on the lips of the roof of the observatory.

He felt nothing.

When they sang a love song together, Kirstie putting such passion into her voice, Mitch just sang.

He felt nothing.

As they pulled up to his house and Avi texted him the okay to take Kirstie to the backyard, Mitch hoped he would feel something then.

"That was so amazing, Mitch." Kirstie sighed as she locked her arm with his. "Thank you."

"You're welcome, Kirst." Mitch replied, smiling down at her. "But it's not noon just yet." He reminded her as they approached the door leading to the backyard.

"What else do you have planned, sneaky?" Kirstie teased.

"You'll see once we get outside." Mitch winked.

Mitch removed his arm from Kirstie's so he could hold the door open for her.

Kirstie smiled at him as she thanked him, then her eyes widened as she saw what Kevin and Avi had set up.

"Mitch..." She gasped as she covered her smile with her hand.

"Avi and Kevin set this up." Mitch explained, locking her arm with his again and walking her outside.

Mitch was impressed. Avi and Kevin really knew how to decorate.

"1, 2, 3," Avi counted off. At three, Kevin began to play "All of Me."

Avi was dressed in a suit, a name tag made with a poorly cut-up index card and his name written in red crayon pinned to the lapel.

"Good day," He greets. "I'm Avi, I'll be your server today. If you will take a seat on the blanket right over there."

They followed the trail of rose petals until they reached the red plaid blanket placed on the grass.

Mitch and Kirstie sat down.

Avi came back over with a basket. "Your lunch," He says as he sets it down in front of them. "I hope you enjoy it."

Mitch reached and grabbed the basket, opening it to reveal steaming barbecue.

"We should've known," Mitch sighed.

In that moment, Avi came running up. "I apologize for the inconvenience," He began in an affected, nasally voice. "But that's my lunch. I'll go grab yours."

And with that, Avi grabbed the BBQ basket and ran inside, returning a few moments later with a different basket.

"This is your lunch. Enjoy!"

Mitch took the basket again and found sandwiches this time.

They ate and made small talk under the late morning sun.

Mitch still felt nothing.

Their picnic lunch flew by, and before they knew it, it was noon.

The doorbell rang, and Scott was at the door.

Kirstie left as Scott entered.

Mitch hoped he would feel something the rest of the week with Scott.
