Chapter 30: Saving Scott
Dexter's picks up his own severed head, then places it back on his neck somehow. He looks at me in the most hateful way possible. I'm almost afraid to think about what he's thinking. I hope Scott is smart enough to take off my wig for me. I hope that he knows that we're still both dressed as teachers!
"You're that kid from the atonement," Felix points out.
Dexter doesn't say anything, instead, he just stares at me and Scott. "I know you can't die, but we will make sure no one here leaves without a fight."
"Why? We're innocent children too!" Felix argues.
"Yeah," Scott says. "We didn't do this to you. We couldn't save you then even if we wanted to."
Scott's eyes can't seem to stay on Dexter's. He's looking at Dexter then back to his father, who is no longer alive. I can't imagine what it's like to witness your own father be torn limb from limb, but I can imagine one being set on fire.
Dexter frowns. "You fooled me once, you won't fool me again," he stretches his hands towards Scott. Whatever happens to Scott, I'll get hurt no matter what. To make matter worse, the children are finished their meal and all dead eyes are on me and Scott now.
Gemma, Mulan, Felix, and Aaliyah stand next to us, while the other kids are backing away. We're surrounded, but everyone else is safe. They can leave. They can easily sneak around these dead children who are focused mainly on Scott and I.
"What do we do now?" Felix says through gritted teeth.
"Take Cosima, Felix. Let them take me and you all run," Scott says, almost handing me to Felix, forgetting Aaliyah. When he does realize that Felix is carrying Aaliyah, he nearly breaks out into tears. "I'm sorry, Cosima..."
I rest my head on Scott now that the children are getting closer. If I do die, at least I'd die in the hands of a true friend and real hero. Of course, I didn't want it to end this way, but I didn't think I'd even make it this far in this condition.
"I don't know why you're so glum," Dexter says. "You won't die, but at least we have a chance to do the same things you did to us. Do you know what it feels like to be here? Here with hundreds of kids and still feel so alone never to rest peacefully? There's no atonement or punishment harsh enough for you, Rachel." Dexter tries and grab Scott, but Gemma jumps in front of him.
I gasp when I see Dexter grab her around the neck. With a bit of strain in her voice, Gemma begins to sing. "This night. Walk the dead. In a solitary style and crash the cemetery gates. In the dress your husband hates. Lay down. Mark the grave. Where the search lights find us drinking by the mausoleum door. And they found you on the bathroom floor."
"Scott," I whisper while they pay attention to us. "Take off t-t-the w-wigs."
Immediately Scott takes off my wigs and off of his wig. Dexter turns and faces me now. "Fingernails," I say. Dexter understands and looks at my fingernails.
"You aren't Rachel," he says.
Gemma stops singing and all of the dead children stare at us. Scott nods his head. "We're the innocent kids."
"Dexter!" A boy hisses. "Don't let them get out of here alive! They laughed at us," the boy turns around and looks at more of the kids. "They all laughed at us." Anger builds up in this boy and he runs towards the group of children until they begin screaming.
Dexter is about to react, but Scott knocks his head right off and kicks his body away before he joins the boy. "Maybe I'm the bad guy for this, but every man for himself now," Scott frowns. The few kids in front of us try and attack, but the six of us are able to kick and push them away. The best thing we can do is avoid their hands trying to grab us.
The parents are also trying their best to fight off the kids, but they're too weak and are failing terribly.
"Scott. My m-mom," I say.
"Cosima, if she was alive she would have been here by now. We have to go!" Scott kicks another kid away. The floorboard is free for anyone to inside. "Felix!" Scott grunts. "Take Aaliyah down. Start going."
"Everybody, this way!" Gemma yells out before following behind Felix.
This isn't how I want things to go. I now watch as kids die, getting their legs and arms ripped out of their sockets. Scott kicks a few more kids out of the way.
I'm knocked out of my thoughts when Scott screams really loud. Mulan grabs me right away because Scott is about to fall. He did fall too, but Mulan caught me in time.
A little girl took a huge bite out of Scott's ankle. His ankle is gushing with blood and he can't get up again. He's screaming and staring at his leg in disbelief, going into complete shock. "H-help him," I tell Mulan.
"I can't. I have you!" She argues.
"L-let go, h-help Scott," I say.
"Just go!" Scott tells Mulan.
There's a bloodthirsty kid staring at Scott, ready to devour him. Scott looks like he's not even going to give up a fight. Mulan is carrying me closer to the floorboard and away from Scott, my hero, my friend. I want to look away, but I can't. The kid runs back, launching at Scott. This time, I do look away.
Suddenly, I hear a sound that comes from someone like they've been punched in the throat or hit in the stomach. I turn and see my mother, now staring at me. The right side of her face is covered with pieces of bloody rags and her arms and legs are skinned off. It's like watching a scary movie live. She kicks the kid in the stomach again, sending them away to pray on someone else. A few more adult surround us now, waving kids our way, doing their best to protect us.
"Go, now!" My mother says, her voice hoarse and weak.
Mulan doesn't give me another moment with my mother, which upsets me. She carries me on her back and slowly climbs down. Scott follows after us and his blood from his ankle leaks onto us. It's dark and I don't see anything but more kids standing over the floorboard, trying to get in fast. I hear screams and horrible sounds from above I will never forget. If I do make it out of here alive, I will forever be scarred...
