Let It Hurt

"Are you sure you don't need me to stay again tonight?" Sam asked.

It was about eleven o'clock at night and Sam and Leo had been here with me all day just watching movies and talking about life. They had done a good job of keeping my mind off of everything and the movies and TV shows we watched had done a superb job of occupying my mind.

Sam had offered to stay with me again tonight but I declined. I needed to get over my fear of being alone and I couldn't necessarily let him waste his time with me though he claimed it was more than alright. I just didn't want to be a burden to him.

"No, Sam. It's okay. I promise," I assured him.

I was leaning up against my door while he stood in the doorway. Leo had already said his goodbyes to me and wasted no time in running back over to his room. He was still the same strange little nerd I had met just last weekend.

"Okay, Lea. Just know you can call me and I'll be right over," he told me.

I smiled. "I know. Goodnight, Samuel."

He chuckled. "Goodnight, Azalea," he parted as he turned to walk back into his room.

I closed my door and walked over to my dresser to get some clothes to wear to bed. After taking out Braelynn's favorite Pirates of the Caribbean t-shirt and a pair of black sweatpants, I changed and climbed into bed, reaching over to grab my phone and the remote off of my bedside table.

I switched the TV off and unlocked my phone. My mom's contact appeared in my notifications and instead of answering her text message, I called her. The phone rang twice before she answered. I smiled at the sound of her voice.

"Hey, sweetie. How are you?" she greeted me.

"I'm holding on as tightly as I can. What are you doing up so late?" I chuckled.

"It's only eight o'clock here, Lea. But, I'm packing up the house. I'm just about finished and I didn't want to wait until tomorrow because I know it'll never get finished if I do," she answered.

I giggled. I forgot the time on the east coast was three hours ahead of the time on the west coast.

"When are you expected to leave?"

"Well, your dad and Ironhide are supposed to be here within the next two days to help me load it all up. I even rented a damn Uhaul trailer. It just dawned on me how much stuff we have in this house," she laughed.

I frowned at the sound of Ironhide's name. "I'm just glad you're only going to be a few hours away from me," I said.

"Did you read my text message before calling me?" she asked me.

I pursed my lips. "I didn't. Why?"

She groaned. "I wish you would have read it, but I guess I'll just tell you. I got off the phone with Lora earlier and her and Ron felt really bad about not coming to see you before you left. They had a going away present for you and I believe you're going to love it," she chirped happily.

I raised a brow. "What is it?"

"They want to give you Braelynn's Cobalt. They already have enough vehicles as it is and they figured that since you have your license now and since you were in college, you would need a way to get around and a way to get to Washington for Thanksgiving break," she answered me.

My eyes were wide. "Seriously? But what about the insurance and everything? How am I supposed to pay for it? I don't have a job. All I have is money from graduation and I need that," I responded.

She chuckled. "Don't worry about it. They've got it all taken care of."

This was the first ounce of happiness I had felt in days. "Oh my gosh. I'm so happy about this. But how are you getting it here?"

"Well, at first I asked your dad to drive it out but he thought a burgundy colored Chevy Colbalt was too girly for him to be seen in so he's making me drive it while he takes the Tahoe," she told me with a huff.

I laughed. Typical William Lennox.

"Wait, so when do I see you?" I asked her.

"Maybe Wednesday or Thursday. You'll actually see me, Annabelle, and your dad," she answered.

I sighed. "But no Ironhide."

"I'm sorry, Lea. You know he would if he could," she told me sadly.

"Yeah, I know." By voice was barely above a whisper.

"Listen, I'll let you get to sleep. I'm glad you called me though. I'll call Lora for you and tell her that you're grateful for everything. I'll see you in a few days. I love you, baby doll."

"I love you mom. Goodnight," I said and hung up the phone.

I placed it on its charger and laid it face down next to my bed. I wrapped myself tightly into my comforter and closed my eyes. Before long I was drifting off to sleep.

I was surrounded by nothing but multi-colored flowers which glistened beneath the sunlight. The sky was a vibrant blue color and there wasn't a cloud present. Calling the area beautiful would be quite the understatement.

I didn't have a clue where I was though and it creeped me out to say the least. The last thing I remembered was falling asleep in my dorm room and here I was waking up in some random flower field.

I got up from my spot on the ground and stood up a frown appearing on my face when I noticed I was still wearing my pajamas.

"Where am I?" I mumbled to myself as I looked at the scenery.

"You're in my happy place," I heard a feminine voice say.

I stiffened at the sound of the voice. It was the same voice that I had been longing to hear for the past two years. This couldn't be even remotely possible. Slowly, I turned in the direction the voice had come from and nearly choked on the air in my throat.

In front of me stood none other than my best friend, Braelynn Olivia Stone. Her dark hair flowed down to her waist and even from where I stood I could see her blue eyes sparkling in the sunlight. She was dressed in a little sundress with floral detailing on it; that didn't surprise me one bit.

She had the biggest smile on her face as she looked at my expression. She began walking towards me and I nearly stopped breathing once again. This wasn't and couldn't be real. This had to be a dream, a dream too good to be true.

"You should really close your mouth. You'll catch flies," she giggled as she placed her fingers beneath my chin to close my mouth. Her touch felt so real.

"Is this real?" I whispered.

She shrugged. "It's as real as you perceive it to be, Azalea."

I groaned. "This is just a dream, isn't it? I wish my mind would stop fucking with me. I have enough problems as it is," I exclaimed.

She laughed. "Isn't that why you called me here?" she asked.

I raised a brow. "Huh?"

She rolled her eyes at me. "The concussion you received those couple of years ago has left you with a horrible memory. Do you not remember pulling my note out of your dresser? I very distinctly remember hearing you say you needed my help."

My eyes widened in realization and I sighed before sitting down on the ground. She sat down next to me.

"I do need your help. But first I need to tell you that I'm sorry-" she cut me off before I could finish my sentence.

"That you're sorry for not coming to see me or to talk to me? I know. I heard what you had to say," she chuckled.

This was becoming very strange. "But how?"

She smirked. "I'm dead, Lea. Just because I'm not physically with you doesn't mean I'm not there."

"So, you're a ghost?" I inquired.

"I prefer the term spirit. Ghost is a just bit too cliche for me," she said.

I let out a huff. "This is so strange."

"Of course it is. I'd probably think so too if I was in your shoes; you know if you were wearing any," she laughed.

I wiggled my bare feet and smiled. "So, anyways. What are you doing here?"

"I just told you that. I'm here to help you with your problem, dork. I know what's going on and I'm actually very disappointed in you."

I gave her a look. "Why are you disappointed in me?"

"You don't think I see, but I do. Stop trying to force yourself to be okay, Azalea. Leo told you to do this earlier but yet you're still doing it. You can't just put your emotions away whenever you feel like it. It's not good. You have to face them head on or at least learn to face them head on," she chastised me.

I sighed. "I'm not very good at that."

She scoffed.

"Obviously. But listen to me. Your friend Sam is doing the same thing. He refuses to face what he's truly feeling. I know how you're feeling inside, Lea. You're angry, you're hurt, you're upset and more importantly, you're broken.

"I know you're trying to hide it all just so people won't worry about you, but sometimes it's okay to let your feelings out; sometimes it's necessary. It's okay to let it hurt. It may not be what you want, but it's what you need."

I frowned but she continued.

"Everyone is telling you to be strong and stop crying as well. Don't listen to them like you have been doing. You go ahead and cry until you can't cry anymore. I promise you it will make you feel a whole lot better than just holding it in all the time. And trust me, I know this isn't going to ever be easy for you and that's okay too. Just know that it's not going to be like this forever. I promise," she finished.

"What makes you so sure?"

She grabbed my hand and smiled at me. "Because true love will always find a way and what you two have is truer than anything I've ever seen in my seventeen years of life," she told me.

I smiled and let a tear fall from my eye. "I've missed you so much, Braelynn."

"I know you have. I can't necessarily say I miss you though because I'm literally always with you. I have been for the past two years. You just didn't know it," she giggled.

"I have no one to keep me in check anymore though. What am I supposed to do about that?" I chuckled.

"You'll see in just a short while." I didn't know what meaning her words held, but I thought better of questioning her.

"Can I ask you something?" I inquired.

She nodded. "Where are you? I don't really know how to phrase it."

"If you're insinuating my destination after my untimely departure, I can't really tell you that. All you need to know is that I'm okay and I'm happy where I am. Also, you need to stop crying over me. It truly gets rather aggravating when I'm standing there trying to tell you to shut the hell up and you can't even hear a word I'm saying," she answered.

I laughed. "I'll stop."

She sighed happily. "Good. And I hear that my parents have given you my car as a going away present? Is that so?"

She raised a brow at me. "Yes it is so," I told her with a smile on my face.

"You better take care of old Bertha for me. If you wreck her, I'm coming after you," she warned me.

I just laughed at her. "I promise I'll take good care of her," I assured her.

She smiled at me and stood up. I followed her action and she placed her small hand on my shoulder.

"I need to go now," she told me.

I frowned. "Do you have to?"

She nodded. "I don't actually, but you do. Just remember that I'm always there, Lea. I'll see you soon," she said as she enveloped me in a tight hug.

I sighed and squeezed her back. This entire thing was still so surreal but it was probably one of the best things that has happened to me in the past two years.

"I love you, Brae."

She giggled. "I love you too, Lea. Now wake up and go answer the damn door. Your new roommate is going to become impatient," she said as she pulled away from me.

I raised a brow and opened my mouth to ask her what she meant, but before I could even get a single word out, she was gone.
