Chapter 49 : The Truth Hurts

Later in the evening, Adrian arrived home. Even after informing his son about who his girlfriend was, he was not contented. He was angrier than ever thinking that Leon messed with Gage through his adopted daughter, knowing that they were studying in the same school.

Seeing his son crushed by the shocking truth was stuck in his mind. The pain the young man felt, the father felt a lot worse. Especially when that father was a crazed psycho.

So anyway, his wife saw him coming in from the living room, "where have you been?" she interrogated him since she knew he freaked out after discovering Oddey's real identity. However, he did not respond and just acted coldly toward her at first which worried Marie even more. "Adrian, answer me. Did you do something?"

The fuming man darted his eyes to her. "I had to break it to our son about his little girlfriend."

"What!?"

"He has to know, Marie."

"Oh, my God," the woman gasped. "He must be hurting right now."

"He is, and it's all Hal's fault!" Adrian was so furious that he took a small decor from the side table and just threw it on the floor. "He has gone too far."

"Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound?"

"This girl is lying to our son. You saw the files."

"Yes, I saw the files, and yes, I realized that Oddey is lying to our son, and I don't like it one bit. I just don't believe that Hal put her to this," Marie remarked.

"Yes, he can!" The man snapped. "He's out to get us, and he intended to get our son through his adopted daughter. They are going to pay for what they have done."

The wife felt disturbed by Adrian's thoughts about her ex-husband and his daughter. "Uhm... I'm going to call Gage. To check how he is doing right now."

Marie turned around as she headed upstairs to the bedroom and could not help but think something was not right with the man she married.

----

In the male's dorm room, Gage felt so heartbroken and angry towards his lying Juliet. He was so distraught that he had not said anything for a very long time.

He had his two best friends who were there for him in his times of trouble and just stared at him with sympathy.

"Forget about her," Courtney said to the poor fellow. "She's not even worth it."

The acting student smirked. She felt victorious, believing that luck was on her side that Oddey was exposed like that, and that she had a chance to have her crush all to herself.

"Court... That's not helping," Felix argued. He genuinely felt bad for his friend and what he was going through.

"No, she's right. I should have believed Courtney from the start," Gage interjected.

"Don't beat yourself too much, man."

"How can I not? The girl I loved lied to me and I fell for it." The Romeo grabbed a stapler from his desk and then threw it across the room out of anger. "Grrr!! I should have known."

"Gage, just chill."

"I loved her so much, you know." The Romeo began tearing up. Hearing those words felt like a punch in the gut to Courtney. "Now, I feel so stupid for trusting her, and I hate myself for it."

"Don't say that," his roommate told him.

"Yeah, if you're gonna hate anyone, hate that faker Oddey," the only female friend advised. "I knew that girl was nothing but fake the first time I saw her. Being all innocent, sweet, and pretty. Pfft... what a joke."

"Please, I think you have something against pretty girls," Felix retorted.

Courtney felt so insulted that she gave the roommate a dirty look. "I don't know what you're talking about," she snarled.

"It doesn't matter anymore. From now on, Oddey is dead to me," Gage voiced as he just stared blankly at his friends.

----

Oddey was inconsolable in the dorm room from the heartbreak and humiliation she was feeling while her best friend comforted her by handing her tissue after tissue.

She was crying for half an hour her mascara and eyeliner were staining down to her cheeks while her red lip gloss smeared around her mouth.

"Let it out, Bestie. Let it out," Rita advised her as she patted the sobbing girl's shoulder.

"I'm such an idiot," Oddey wailed.

"Noo..."

"Bestie, let's face it. I am. I should've told him about myself in the first place, or at least stayed away from him..."

Rita had no idea what to say next, though she did not have the heart to lecture her best friend over her mistake during her lowest moments. "It's gonna be okay," she assured her.

"God, I'm so stupid," the Juliet wept as she pounded her head.

"Stop it!" The best friend held her hand to stop Oddey from hurting herself.

Suddenly, the sobbing girl's phone rang, so she checked to see who it was, "It's mom," she sniffled.

"Do you want me to tell you that... you don't feel like talking?"

"Thanks, Bestie, but it's okay, I have to tell her what happened," Oddey answered the call. "Hello, mom..."

"Honey?" Eva could tell instantly that the girl was weeping through the audio call. "Are you crying? What's wrong?"

"Mom.. It's Gage... He."

"What? Did he do something to you? Did he hurt you?"

"He broke up with me," Oddey wailed.

"Oh, my God. Honey, I'm so sorry," Eva responded in a sympathetic tone.

"He broke up with me because... because he knows."

"What? What are you talking about?" At first, the woman could not understand what the young lady meant from all the crying.

"He knows about me! He found out who I am. He knows that I'm not your daughter. He knows that I am Dad's."

Eva was appalled that their secret had been revealed. "How?!" she exclaimed.

"He had these documents about me and showed them to me..." Oddey cried as she began explaining while Rita continued comforting her.

"Wait. Back up for a moment. What documents?" The mother figure questioned.

"There were these copies of papers about personal information."

"Your what?! How does Gage even get his hands on that?"

The Juliet instantly stopped crying once she realized how her ex-boyfriend had his hands on her pieces of information. Even Rita got curious about that since she was in the room and heard their conversations.

"I'm... I'm not sure," she stuttered until it hit her. "No, wait. I remember now. He met up with his Dad this afternoon for lunch. I... I think that's where he got it from."

"That son of a bitch," Eva grumbled under her breath.

"Mom, I'm so sorry."

"Honey, it's not your fault. And try to calm down, or else you'll get another asthma attack."

"But what about Dad...?" The girl stammered in fear. "He'll be so mad that Gage's father found out about me."

"No, he won't. It's not your fault that Adrian found out," The woman assured her. "Listen. Speaking of the the devil, I called because your father and him are scheduled to face each other at court soon. Well, now that the secret is out, maybe you want come along to support your father."

"I'll... I'll think about it."

"I understand. Honey, It's going to be okay. Anyway. I should go and tell your Dad what happened. I'll call you again later."

"Okay. Bye, Mom." Oddey put the phone down and continued thinking about the situation.

"If Adrian's dad is investigating about you, he must be a total psycho," Rita remarked. "I would lie about myself if someone was researching about me."

"That doesn't matter to Gage. Plus, he's right, he gave me so many chances to tell the truth, but I chose not to."

"Bestie, you didn't choose to lie. And even if you did, you lied because it was for your own protection. Gage may not see it now or ever, but that part is the truth."

"The truth hurts. I have to pay the price of losing him. I hurt him and I hurt myself," Oddey said, then burst out of tears once again.

Her best friend just hugged her. "No matter what happens, I'll be here for you."

----

In the Magnum Tradings, Eva broke the news to Leon in his office. Obviously, the CEO was not thrilled to hear it as he took out a Vodka and stared out the window. "Adrian is prying not only with my life," He grunted. "And now, he knows about Odette. This is what I'm afraid of."

"Adrian must have accessed your files with the help of his lawyers," The personal assistant sighed.

"He better leave my daughter alone, or else, I'll bring him down to hell."

"I know. Worried too. What are we going to do?"

"Let's make her switch schools," Leon suggested.

"What if she doesn't agree to that?" Eva questioned.

"We should hire bodyguards for Odette."

"That is not necessary," The woman argued with her boss. "I know you're worried about her safety, but having bodyguards around her while she's in school is not what she needs. Although I do agree with you, Oddey could be in danger now that Adrian knows that you're her father."

"So what do you suggest?"

"Your daughter agreed to spend time with you this weekend. We can figure out how to protect it by then. God, hearing her cry through the phone, broke my heart. It will do her good if she spends her time with her father."

Leon was taken aback as he turned around towards her. "She cried? Why?"

"She did. Gage broke up with her today after finding out who she is and now, she's heartbroken. Poor girl."

"She's devastated now, but it's for the best."

Eva scowled at him. "It's for the best? How can you say that? Those two loved each other. Don't tell me you're happy about this now that they're splitsville?"

"I'm sorry that came out wrong. Believe me, I'm not happy. Although to be honest, I am relieved. But that doesn't mean I don't like seeing and knowing that my daughter is heartbroken," The man claimed.

However, his personal assistant was not convinced as crossed her arms and she glared at him. "Oh?"

"I just don't want my daughter to be near the danger, that's all. It's bad enough those two are studying in the same school, then she went behind my back to be in a relationship with Adrian's son."

"Oddey made a mistake by lying to you and Gage, but she wouldn't have to do that if they were not tangled in this mess."

"You think I want this for my daughter? I did my best to protect her. You know that," Leon snapped back.

"She's in this mess the moment you have her. That, you know from the beginning. She's been scared that you'll be disappointed in her about her relationship with Gage, and now this."

The man was stumped to hear that. "She is? Even after everything, she's worried about how I feel about her?"

"Yes."

"I'm not happy about it, but she can never disappoint me."
