Chapter 5
As the two walked down the dimmly lit streets towards Hannah's house, Donnie walked with his bike on one side of him and Hannah on the other, putting him in between the two. As the two walked, they were surrounded by a comfortable silence. "Thanks again for telling me all that you did, Donnie. I mean, I'm sure you could've picked anyone of our friends to tell, but I'm glad you chose to tell me." Hannah said, breaking the silence. Donnie smiled at her. "Thanks for letting me tell you all of that." He said in reply, flashing her a warm smile. "I know it was a lot, but I'm glad at least one person knows the truth about me now. That's one less person I have to lie to." Donnie said contently. "But you'll tell the others?" Hannah asked curiously. "Eventually, I hope so. I do want to tell them so I don't have to lie to them anymore, but it might be a while. We'll just have to see how things play out, I guess." Donnie said. Hannah nodded in response.
"Well, I believe this is you, Ms. Baker." Donnie said jokingly as the pair reached Hannah's house. "I believe so, Mr. Gill." Hannah said jokingly, using his real name since no one else was around. Donnie smiled at the use of his real name. "Hey, want to come in for a little?" Hannah asked hopefully, not wanting Donnie to leave just yet. Donnie thought for a few seconds. "If it's ok with your parents, I'd be happy to." Donnie said with a smile. "Oh, I'm sure it'll be fine with them." Hannah reassured as she grabbed the boys hand and dragged him towards the front door, leaving his bike in their driveway.
"Hello, Clay. It's nice to see you." Mr. Baker greeted as he saw his daughter enter the kitchen closely followed by Donnie. "Hi, Mr. Baker." Donnie greeted back with a smile. "Hannah, I think your mother had something she wanted to talk to you about real quick." Mr. Baker said as he stood from his chair. "Ok, sure." Hannah said. "Where is she?" Hannah asked. "She's in the living room." Mr. Baker said. "And don't worry. I'll keep Clay company while you two talk." Mr. Baker said with a gentle smile. Nodding in response, Hannah left the kitchen and headed towards the living room. "Did you tell her?" Mr. Baker asked Donnie after making sure that Hannah was gone. "I did. I told her pretty much everything." Donnie replied with a nod of his head. "How did she take it?" Mr. Baker asked. Donnie shrugged. "I think she took it pretty well. She definitely took it better than I expected her to. She seemed calm the whole time and didn't freak out on me or anything. She also promised to keep my secret too." Donnie explained. "That's good." Mr. Baker said, smiling at the boy. Donnie smiled back in return. "Are you and Mrs. Baker going to tell her too?" Donnie asked curiously. After a few seconds of silence, Mr. Baker nodded his head slowly. "Yeah. I think it's best if we do, since she now knows about you." Mr. Baker said. "Want me to stay for when you tell her?" Donnie offered. "Yeah, that might be a good idea if you stick around." Mr. Baker said. "Ok." Donnie agreed. "Come on. Let's go join the others then." Mr. Baker said as he started to walk towards the living room. "Aren't Hannah and Mrs. Baker still talking?" Donnie asked. "Yeah. Their talking about what we're going to tell her." Mr. Baker said. Donnie stayed quiet as he then proceeded to follow Mr. Baker into the living room.
As Mr. Baker sat down in the chair next to his wife, Donnie took a seat on the couch next to a confused Hannah. "Ok. What is it that you and Dad need to tell me?" Hannah asked her mother, feeling comforted when she felt Donnie gently place his arm around her shoulders. "It's about why we moved here." Mr. Baker started. "It wasn't necessarily because we wanted to just live somewhere new. It's because our jobs relocated us here." Mrs. Baker explained. "Jobs? What jobs? The only place I know about is the store." Hannah said, sounding confused. "That's just a side job type of thing. We couldn't tell you what we really did, because it involves Donnie." Mr. Baker says, gesturing to the boy next to his daughter. "What? What are you talking about?" Hannah asked her parents. Donnie glanced at his friend's parents, seeing them glancing back at him. "Hannah, your parents work for that secret agency I mentioned earlier, Shield. Just like my parents, they were recruited to watch out for me." Donnie explained, not once looking away from the girl sitting next to him. "So, they know who you really are?" Hannah asked him. Donnie nodded in reply. "Yeah. You, your parents, and mine are the only people who know my real identity, besides Shield." Donnie said. "Why didn't you tell me this sooner?" Hannah asked, directing the question to her parents. "We wanted to keep you safe. Being in our line of work can be dangerous. We only kept it a secret to keep you safe. But Donnie convinced us that we should tell you." Mrs. Baker said. "How did you convince them to tell me?" Hannah asked Donnie, who smiled at the thought of his answer. "I said that if anything were to happen, I'd be there to make sure you were safe and protect you." Donnie said proudly. "Besides, with me around, if anything were to happen, it'll be like having your own personal superhero bodyguard." Donnie joked, successfully making Hannah smile. "So, I moved here so my parents, along with yours, could easily keep watch for those bad guys you briefly told me about earlier?" Hannah asked her friend. "Yeah, pretty much." Donnie replied with a small nod. Hannah only smiled at him again. "So, you're not mad that we didn't tell you any of this sooner?" Mr. Baker asked carefully. "No, I'm not mad. I'm just glad you three eventually told me the truth." Hannah said, smiling warmly at Donnie and her parents. "Me too. It feels really good knowing I don't have to lie to you anymore." Donnie admitted. Looking at him, Hannah noticed the slight redness appear on his cheeks as he glanced downward. Hannah moved closer to Donnie, wrapping her arms around him as she pulled him into a gentle hug. After a few seconds, Donnie wrapped his arms around the girl's waist, returning the gesture.
A while later, Donnie bid the Bakers goodbye as he made his way back to his own home. He smiled to himself as he rode down the empty streets on his bike, glad someone finally knew his secret. Upon reaching his house, Donnie parked his bike in the garage before heading inside. "Hey, Donnie." Mrs. Jensen greeted as she was in the kitchen when he entered. "Hey." Donnie greeted back, not even hiding the smile on his face. "I take it the talk went well?" Mrs. Jensen questioned with a small smile of her own. "Yeah, it did. I'm glad at least one person knows the truth now." Donnie said. He then walked over to the fridge and pulled out an unopened bottle of Sprite. "That's not really cold yet. I just put it in there." Mrs. Jensen told him. "That's ok." Donnie said with a smile as he poured some into a glass, lightly touching the glass afterwards, causing a thin layer of ice to cover the glass. "I think I'm going to turn in for the night." Donnie said. "Ok. Good night, Donnie." Mrs. Jensen replied. "Good night." Donnie replied back as he left the kitchen with his glass in hand and headed upstairs to his room.
