Chapter 38
After they stopped for some ice cream and just talked for an hour or so, the two decided to make their way back home. As Mrs. Jensen pulled the car into the driveway, Donnie noticed Hannah, Jessica, and Justin talking and waiting around by the front porch. He saw the three friends stand up and start to walk over after they noticed the car pull up.
"Hey, Donnie. Hi, Mrs. Jensen." Jessica greeted the two kindly as she walked towards them, closely followed by Justin and Hannah. After sharing a brief greeting with her son's friends, Mrs. Jensen headed inside, leaving the three alone. "So, how was school?" Donnie asked, almost sounding like a parent adressing their child. Justin chuckled. "School was school." He said with a slight shrug of his shoulders. "What did you do all day, Helmet?" Hannah asked curiously. "I've actually been out all day. My mom wanted us to spend some time together to bond a little." Donnie explained. "How did she react when you told her about your suspension?" Jessica asked curiously. Donnie shrugged. "She took it way better than I expected. She didn't get mad at all when I told her the reason for why I got suspended." The black haired boy said. "She was actually proud of me for doing what I did." He added. "She was?" Justin asked, sounding slightly surprised. "Yeah. I think it was because I told her the motive for my actions." Donnie said, blushing slightly as he remember why he beat Monty up in the first place. "Because you were protectively standing up for your girlfriend?" Jessica questioned knowingly as her face housed a smirk. Donnie smiled at Jessica's comment as he took ahold of his girlfriend's hand and gently pulled her so she was now standing in front of him with her back turned to him. "Exactly." He said as a reply to Jessica's statement, wrapping his arms around Hannah's waist from behind as he gently rested his head on her shoulder. "I'm sure people are scared of you now, Donnie." Justin commented. "Good. They should know that I can be a sweet, caring, sensitive guy when I want to be, but I can also be protective and mean when I want to br as well." Donnie stated as he smiled an innocent smile, turning his head to place a kiss to the Hannah's cheek, making her smile and noticably blush before he placed his head back on her shoulder again.
After a few months had passed, Thanksgiving and Christmas came and went - Donnie and his parents leaving to go spend Christmas and the New Year with his mother's parents - the two friendly elders who had welcomed Donnie into their home with open arms and who he had quickly become used to calling his grandparents.
As school started back up again in January, students were slow to get back to their class schedules and waking up earlier that 7:00am. As Donnie walked towards school with Hannah by his side, he glanced around at his surroundings as cars passed by and a cold breeze blew by every now and again. "I missed you over Christmas break." Hannah had told him after greeting him with a warm, tight hug. Thinking to himself, Donnie smiled as he already knew what he wanted to do with his life. He knew it was still really early, and neither of the two were in college yet, but he already knew that he wanted Hannah Baker to become his wife one day in the near future. "What's got Donnie Gill blushing today?" Hannah asked teasingly as she squeezed his hand, pulling the boy out of his thoughts as they continued walking down the sidewalk and towards Liberty High. "Just thinking about something, I guess." Donnie replied as he returned a gentle squeeze back to her hand.
Donnie smiled to himself again as the pair reached the school and had to go their separate ways to their respective first period classes. As the day went on, the pair passed each other in the halls as they went from class to class, smiled and briefly talked with each other before and after communications class, and sat together with the rest of their friends during their lunch hour.
Once school was finally over for the day, everyone chatted with each other for a bit before saying their goodbyes and heading home to get their homework done. As everyone left, Donnie and Hannah walked together, heading for Donnie's house to work on homework together before dinner, since Hannah had been invited over to have dinner with Donnie and his family.
Later that night, after getting their homework completed and having dinner and talking with Donnie's parents, the pair had headed back up to Donnie's room, just talking with each other for a while before they both got tired and fell asleep in each other's arms on Donnie's bed. As they peacefully slept together, the boy's warm covers and their combined body heat kept them warm and protected from the cold weather outside.
