Chapter 30
As the couple continued to walk down the sidewalk side-by-side with their hands still clasped and lightly swaying between them, they looked around as the big buildings started to disappear, leaving more open space with the occasional smaller store or a gas station here and there. Looking around, Donnie smiled as he noticed a sign that read "pumpkin patch ahead." He glanced towards his girlfriend to see her looking in a different direction, not noticing the sign as they passed it. "We're almost there." Donnie said with a smile, gaining the girl's attention. "Really? How can you tell?" She asked curiously. "We just passed a sign a few seconds ago." Donnie answered with a small shrug of his shoulders.
The slightly taller boy felt his girlfriend subconsciously move closer and lean into him more as a cold air blew past them. In response, Donnie gently unclasped their hands, not wasting any time as he placed his arm around the girl's shoulders as they kept walking together, getting a warm smile from Hannah in response as she wrapped her arm around his waist in return.
Not even five minutes later, the familiar, seasonal sight of a few bails of hay with pumpkins resting neatly on top of them came into the couple's view. "Why does being around a pumpkin patch make it smell more like Fall?" Hannah asked randomly, making Donnie chuckle to himself. "I honestly have no idea, but it just does." He said, agreeing to the fact that the smell of a pumpkin patch makes the season more official. The two looked around at the setup - a pretty large area with hay bails and pumpkins set neatly around, being protected by a temporary wooded fence. They also noticed how not a lot of people were there, making the space not crowded at all with a bunch of pumpkins in many shapes, sizes, and a habdful of different colors to choose from.
The pair greeted an older woman that appeared to be running the pumpkin patch with the help of a few other people as they walked further into the fenced area and glanced around at all of the pumpkins neatly placed on the rectangular-shaped hay bails as they passed by them. The two teens continued walking around, looking through the variety of pumpkins and their different shapes and sizes, both deciding to go with the tradition orange-colored pumpkins.
After a good few minutes, both Hannah and Donnie had each picked out a pumpkin and Donnie had paid for them. Now the two were walking back to Hannah's house as Donnie carried both pumpkins - Hannah had declined the offer at first, saying she'd carry her own, but Donnie was extremely stubborn and persuasive, leading Hannah to eventually give in and let him carry both pumpkins back to her house.
Once the pair got back to Hannah's house, the girl opened the front door and let Donnie in before following behind, closing and locking the door behind them. The pair then made their way into the kitchen, where they saw Hannah's parents. "Hey, guys. What did you two decide to do while we were gone?" Mr. Baker asked as he and his wife were sitting at the kitchen table together. "Oh, Donnie and I just went down to Monet's and then I kinda got the idea to do something pretty cliché for this time of year." Hannah explained with a warm smile, gesturing to the two pumpkins as Donnie gently placed them on the counter. "That sounds like a lot of fun." Mrs. Baker said as she smiled between the two teens. Donnie smiled brightly and nodded his head. "It was a lot of fun. Especially since Hannah was the one to suggest doing it." He said. "Speaking of suggesting things, I got an even better idea." Donnie added with a proud smile on his face. "Ok, and what would your even better idea be?" Hannah asked him, curious to know what his mind came up with. "Since Halloween is less than a week away, we could hold off on carving those pumpkins until a day or two before Halloween. And also, since it's Halloween, we could watch a few Halloween-related or scary movies. Maybe, since Halloween is six days away, we each can choose three movies. That gives us one for each night until Halloween, starting tomorrow night." Donnie explained, knowing very well that his girlfriend wasn't all that thrilled when it came to scary movies. "Donnie, you know how I feel about those kinds of movies. Why do guys like them so much anyway?" Hannah stated, questioning her boyfriend with the last remark. "Maybe guys like scary movies so much because they give us an excuse to be close to our girlfriends and do this." Donnie said with a smirk as he stood next to Hannah, placing his arm around her shoulders and gently holding her closer to him protectively. Hannah blushed at the gesture. "Ok. I guess I'll agree to your idea since you agreed to mine." Hannah said as she hesitantly gave in to her boyfriend's one-a-night-for-six-nights scary/Halloween movie idea. "If you want, you can even choose the first movie that we will watch tomorrow night, and I'll even broaden the scary/Halloween movie choice variety to old classic scary movies too." Donnie said, making Hannah smile at his offer, to which she agreed to. "Well, I guess I better think about heading home, considering how late it already is." Donnie stated after he noticed the time that was displayed on his phone.
Once Donnie left to make his way back home after bidding goodbyes with Hannah and her parents, and after Hannah and her parents had dinner together, the girl decided to head to her room and see what three movies she would pick for the next three out of six nights. As she searched through Netflix, for scary/halloween movie suggestions, three stuck out to her - "Psycho," "Disterbia," and "House at the End of the Street." She smiled to herself as she thought about her three picks, becoming curious about what three movies Donnie could possibly pick out of the large variety of old, classic, recent, and new scary/Halloween related movies that are out there. She felt confident about it though, knowing that he would be right by her side the whole time, and that he would even stay the night with her if she didn't want to be alone, or even just simply wanted his company. Either way, she knew he was a rare type of guy - the type of guy you knew you could tell anything to. Donnie was the type of guy Hannah could always go to when she needed a shoulder to cry on. She knew he would do anything in his power to protect her and keep her safe, no matter what. And above all that, Hannah knew that she could trust Donnie with anything and everything, including her deepest, darkest secrests. And Hannah knew that she definitely trusted him more than anyone else in this world, no questions asked.
