Chapter 23

A few days later, after Donnie and Hannah had told Jessica about Bryce's confession and talked about what to do with it, Hannah was looking through her closet in search of something to wear for her date with Donnie. After they talked for a while about what to do for a date, the two had easily  agreed on letting Donnie pick what they would do and where they would go, ending the night by sitting on the roof of the Crestmont theater as the pair watched the moon like they had planned to do earlier on, before certain events took place because of a certain high school senior jock.

After finally deciding on something to wear and taking a decently short, warm shower, Hannah got dressed in her casual - Donnie requested they dress casual rather than dressing up - blue jeans, gray boots, and a plain white t-shirt with a black and red plaid shirt over it. Smiling to herself as she looked at her outfit in the mirror, Hannah decided to head downstairs to wait for her date to pick her up. As she entered the kitchen, saw her parents quietly sitting at the kitchen table together. "Well, don't you look nice tonight. What's the occasion?" Hannah's dad joked as he saw his daughter enter the kitchen. "Donnie asked me out on a date. I don't know what he has planned, though." Hannah said, blushing slightly at the end. "That's great! I'm sure you and Donnie will have a lot of fun on your date! I'm happy for you, Hannah." Her mother said with a warm smile towards her daughter. "Me too. Donnie's a really great guy, so I won't intimidate him or scare him off like most other dads probably would." Hannah's dad said, making Hannah smile brightly at him. "Even if you did, he could freeze you, Andy. Not that he would, but still." Hannah's mom informed her husband in a joking tone, making Hannah chuckle. "Mom does have a point there, Dad." Hannah said jokingly, siding with her mother. "Anyway, I should probably get going." Hannah said as she made her way to the front door. "Ok. Have fun on your date!" "Yeah, but not too much fun!" Hannah heard her parents say, her dad's comment making her blush darkly, before closing the front door behind her as she looked ahead, spotting a figure on a bike slowly get bigger as it got closer to her.

"Hey, Helmet." Hannah greeted with a smile once Donnie stopped his bike in front of her. "Still going with that nickname, I see." Donnie joked as he unstrapped the buckle of his helmet before removing it from his head. "You set yourself up by wearing that, and you know it." Hannah said, pointing to the black helmet in Donnie's hands. "Fair enough." Donnie agreed with a small nod after glancing down at his helmet. "You look adorable, by the way." Hannah complimemted after noticing Donnie's casual outfit consisting of dark blue jeans, black converse, and a light gray t-shirt with a dark green and dark blue plaid shirt resting over it. "There's that word again." Donnie joked with a smile. "But you look really nice too. Must be a coincidence that we're kind of matching." Donnie added with a smile as he noticed his girlfriend's outfit. Hannah smiled at her boyfriend's words. "So, Helmet. What is it you have planned for us on our first date tonight?" Hannah asked curiously. "That information will remain a secret until we arrive to our destination, Ms. Baker." Donnie said as he gently took ahold of Hannah's hand. "But don't worry. It's easily within walking distance." Donnie added as he started walking, leading Hannah to their first destination of the night as they held hands, happily swinging their arms between them as they walked together.

"You are unbelievable, you know that, Helmet?" Hannah questioned once their date destination was revealed. Donnie smiled brightly. "I take it that's meant as a compliment?" He questioned, already knowing the answer to the question. "Of course it is." Hannah said after lightly kissing her boyfriend's cheek and making him noticably blush. "I completely forgot that the carnival was in town." She added after looking around at the bright carnival lights and adults, teens, and kids moving about the different tents, games, consession stands, and rides. "This is honestly amazing. I can't picture anything better for a first date with you than the carnival." Hannah told him as they started walking again after Donnie had payed for a few tickets. The boy smiled at his girlfriend's words. "I'm glad to hear you say that. I was honestly nervous that it could come off as cliché, because I know how you hate chiché things." Donnie said. "Some cliché things, I do hate. But this, this is slightly cliché but not extremely. And that makes it the perfect balance." Hannah said as the two walked further into the carnival.

After a couple hours of going on a few rides - one being the ferris wheel - and playing some carnival games - Donnie being cliché as he won a medium-sized stuffed bear as a prize and immediately gave it to his girlfriend - the two walked together, sharing some cotton candy as they both had decided to save the watching-the-moon-together part of the date for another time, both wanting to end the night with the amount of fun they had together on their carnival date. Walking hand-in-hand, Donnie carring their cotton candy while Hannah carried the bear he had won for her, the couple started to make their way back to Hannah's house as they were engulfed in a comfortable silence.

"Thanks for tonight, Donnie. I had a great time." Hannah said as she held onto the stuffed bear her boyfriend had won for her, the pair now standing at her front porch. "You're welcome. I had a great time too." Donnie said with a smile. Not needing to say anything else, Donnie slowly closed the space between them in a gentle, passionate kiss. Smiling into it, Hannah quickly returned the soft kiss, pulling away almost 10 seconds later. "Thanks again for tonight." Hannah said again as she opened the front door. "It was my pleasure." Donnie said, making Hannah smile brightly at him. "See you tomorrow, Ms. Baker?" Donnie asked, knowing the next day was a school day. "Why, of course, Mr. Gill." Hannah replied, copying his tone before watching Donnie turn and head for his bike, riding off down the street and out of her line of sight before she walked inside, closing the front door behind her, not being able to stop the wide smile from appearing on her face.
