Chapter 21

That night, Donnie knew he wasn't going to get much sleep, and he was right in knowing so. Even if he did manage to fall asleep, the boy was woken up by Hannah's mumbling from her nightmares about the recent event that took place. Donnie didn't mind it though. He was more than happy to hold the girl in his arms, comforting her in a time of need. Donnie had also sent a message to Hannah's parents, sence he had their numbers, telling them that Hannah was safe with him at his house, and that he would explain everything to the two worried parents later.

A few hours later, after the two teens were finally able to get a little sleep, Donnie awoke again to see it was now bright outside as the sun was finally up high in the sky, warming the world below it. The boy glanced down to his chest, seeing that his friend was still asleep. Not wanting to wake her, Donnie decided to get up to make some breakfast, leaving a note for her right next to her on the bed before he quietly left the room.

After quietly closing the door behind him, Donnie made his way downstairs, being greeted by the two adults sitting quietly at the kitchen table as they enjoyed their morning coffee. "Good morning." Donnie simply greeted them as he walked further into the kitchen. His parents both mumbled a good morning to him in response before becoming serious. "Did she stay here all night?" Mrs. Jensen asked, talking about the girl who was currently still sleeping in Donnie's room. "Yeah, she did." Donnie said, not even bothering to lie. "And before you even go there, no. Nothing happened...well between us, anyway." Donnie said. "What do you mean?" Mr. Jensen asked curiously as he put his mug down after taking a sip of the warm beverage. Donnie glanced over towards the staircase that lead upstairs. "Something did happen. Just not between us." Donnie restated again. "I was going to talk to Bryce Walker last night. The reason for that isn't important right now." Donnie explained, interupting his mom as he saw she was about to question him. "Anyway, I heard muffled  voices inside, and the front door was unlocked, so I let myself in. When I got inside, Bryce was trying to force himself onto her." Donnie explained, making the two adults take on shocked expressions as they both now fully paid attention to Donnie and noticed the marks, cuts, and bruises decorating his face. "Did he do anything?" Mr. Jensen asked. "I don't think so. I think I got there right before he was able to go that far. I may have also beat him up a little bit." Donnie said.

After talking and making some breakfast, Donnie loaded some food and drinks onto a food tray before carrying it back upstairs and into his room. Once back in his room, Donnie noticed that Hannah was still asleep, making the boy smile to himself. Setting the tray on the bed, Donnie walked over to the side Hannah was on, lightly shaking her awake. "Hey." Donnie whispered with a small smile once the girl slowly opened her eyes to look at him. As Donnie watched her, he saw her expression slowly change from tired to worried. "What happened to you?" She asked as she lightly placed her hand over his cheek, her fingertips coming close to the black eye he now had. Donnie shrugged his shoulders. "Got a little roughed up, I guess." He said. "Thanks for saving me last night." Hannah said as her eyes became a little watery at the memory. "Hey, it's ok. I'd do anything to protect you and keep you safe. Even if it meant getting beat up or something." Donnie said, knowing that Hannah knew he meant it. "I made you some breakfast, if you're hungry." Donnie said, changing the topic as he grabbed the tray of food and gently placed it in Hannah's lap after she sat up. "Aw, that's so sweet of you, Helmet." Hannah said, smiling at the boy standing by the bed. "I certainly hope you'll join me. I don't think I can eat all this food by myself." Hannah said in a hinting tone as she watched her friend. "Yeah, of course." Donnie said, smiling as he sat down beside Hannah, lightly placing an arm over her shoulders and pulling her closer to him as the two began to eat the food Donnie had made.

Later that day, after Donnie had walked Hannah home and told her parents what had happened the night before, the two were lying together on Hannah's bed, their arms wrapped around each other as they simply laid close together with barely any space between them, enjoying each other's company as the girl still didn't want to be left alone.

"Hannah, there's someone here to see you." Hannah's mom spoke from the other side of the closed door. "Sup, loser and Hannah?" A new voice greeted as the door was suddenly opened. Hearing the familiarity behind the voice, both Hannah and Donnie turned to see none other than the girl who had moved away a week after Hannah moved to town - Kat. "Kat!" Hannah exclaimed, suddenly excited to see her old friend again after so long. "I see you and Helmet are still hanging out." Kat said with a smile, using Hannah's nickname for the boy. "Nice to see you too, Kat." Donnie said as he stood from the bed, followed by Hannah. "Well, let's see it." Kat said as she smiled and walked closer to him. Donnie looked at Kat confused. "You heard me, Ice Boy. Let's see it." Kat said again with a smile, making Hannah and Donnie share a glance before slowly turning back to a now-smirking Kat. "I assume you told her?" Kat asked, gesturing towards Hannah. Donnie slowly nodded in response. "Great. Well, I guess I can tell you the truth to why I moved away a while ago." Kat said, Donnie already putting the pieces together in his mind as he now smiled at Kat, confusing Hannah even more. "I had to move because my parents got relocated in the field for their job. They also work for the agency I'm sure Ice Boy here has told you about." Kat explained. "Long story short, they got relocated again. Back here. So I'm back and here to stay. There's no getting rid of me this time." Kat said, smiling at the end as Hannah and Donnie smiled as well. "And yes. I already know about what happened with the whole Hydra-after-you-getting-shot-falling-from-a-cargo-ship-and-being-frozen thing." Kat added, directing it to Donnie as the boy nodded in reply. "So, since I already know what happened to Donnie...what's been going on with you?" Kat asked Hannah as the three moved to sit on her bed. Hannah glanced towards Donnie as she grabbed ahold of his hand, getting a warm, gentle, encouraging smile from the boy in return as he lightly squeezed her hand.

After Hannah had explained everything that happened, including what Bryce did to both Jessica and herself, the girl became quiet as she looked at her hands as they were placed in her lap, along with Donnie's hand sence the two were still holding hands. Kat stayed silent, not knowing what to say after hearing what the senior did to her friend and another classmate. Getting the hint that the topic should be changed to something lighter, Kat took notice of how the two were holding hands. "I bet Donnie here beat the crap out of Bryce last night, despite how his face looks now." Kat commented, noticing the scars, bruises, and black eye Donnie had. "I bet if you didn't hold back, you would've even frozen him too." Kat added, looking right at the ice-powered boy as he smiled with a slight nod in response. "Yeah. It was pretty hard not to. But I'm glad I roughed him up a bit though." Donnie said. "Hey, how's your head?" Hannah asked curiously, confusing both Donnie and Kat as they looked at her with confused expressions. "You know. From when Bryce hit it really hard against that table a few times." Hannah clarified as she looked at Donnie as the boy nodded in understanding. "Oh, right. Well, it did hurt for a while. I probably have a bruise or something there now, and I still have a little bit of a headache, now that you ask." Donnie said, noticing the slight throbbing coming from his head. "Wait, what did you do to Bryce? I'm just curious to know." Kat said, wondering just what exactly Donnie did to the senior. "Let's just say that when I first got there, I became a defensive football player with strength I didn't know I even had for a few seconds." Donnie said, remembering how he had roughly tackled Bryce to the ground and away from Hannah last night. "I did punch him a good bit too, though. Probably have him a few bruises." Donnie added. "I can tell you did." Kat said, motioning to Donnie's right hand, the one that was not clasped with Hannah's hand. Donnie held his right hand up, looking down at it to see that his knuckles were noticably bruised and sore. "Definitely worth it." Donnie said, briefly letting go of Hannah's  hand as he stood from the bed and walked over to the door, where his backpack was leaning against the wall. Donnie could feel both girls watching him as he rummaged through his bag. "Especially sence I got this out of it." Donnie said after finding what he was looking for, holding up a cassette tape with "B.W." written on it in black sharpie. "What's that?" Kat asked curiously after seeing the tape in the boy's hand. Donnie smiled brightly as he walked back over with the tape in hand, joining the two girls back on the bed again. "It may or may not be a confession." Donnie said, both girls immediately taking on slightly shocked expressions as their eyes went wide at the new information Donnie had just presented to them.
