Chapter 20
As Donnie got closer to his destination, he felt himself get angrier as he thought about what Bryce had done, and especially who ended up falling victim to his actions. By the time Donnie reached the Walker's house, he had already planned out how he'd approach the matter. When Donnie got in front of the house, he got off his bike and set it down in the front yard before approaching the door.
As Donnie was about to knock on the front door; however, he suddenly heard a familiar panic-sounding, muffled voice. Quickly realizing who the voice belonged to, Donnie hurriedly placed a hand on the doorknob, turning it to find the door already unlocked. Donnie then pushed the door open, not even waiting for an invitation as he quickly entered the house, slamming the door behind him and stopping in his tracks as he saw the scene in front of him. Bryce Walker, the rapist, was trying to force himself onto a paniced Hannah Baker, both too distracted to have heard Donnie come in.
Immidiatly going into action after seeing Bryce try to remove the paniced girl's shirt, Donnie sprinted forward, roughly tackling an unprepared Bryce Walker to the ground and away from Hannah. Not giving Bryce the chance to register what just happened, Donnie got on top of the high school senior, not hesitating to throw a punch at the Liberty High jock's face. Taking a very brief momemt to check on Hannah as he glanced in her direction was a mistake for Donnie, because as soon as he glanced away - if even just for a second - Bryce took his chance by throwing a hard punch right to the black haired boy's jaw, successfully knocking Donnie off of him.
As Donnie was slightly distracted from the hard blow to his jaw, Bryce took the oportunity to stand back up. "Bad move, Jensen. You're gonna wish you were dead after this." Bryce said with a menacing smirk on his face. Before anyone could react, Bryce charged at Donnie, using all his force to shove the boy against the wall.
As the fighting continued, Bryce currently with the upper hand, Donnie found himself pinned against a table on the other side of the room from his friend. Before Donnie could even resister what was going on, he felt a brief wind hit his face before feeling a sudden pain in his forehead. Feeling this a couple times, Donnie realized that Bryce was holding the back of the younger boy's head, using some strength to hit his head against the table. When Bryce was about to smash Donnie's head into the table again, Donnie found a chance for him to get the upper hand as he quickly maneuvered himself out of the high school senior's grip, throwing another punch directly to Bryce's face as he did so, knocking the older boy back a few steps. "Respect, Jensen. Never seen this side of you before. I like it." Bryce said, smirking as he stayed standing in his place, using the back of his hand to wipe the very small amount of blood off his face. Hearing this, Donnie only scoffed. "Says the guy who doesn't respect girls at all." Donnie said. "Girls don't deserve respect. They play games. Make eyes at us guys." Bryce said. "Or most of us guys, anyway." Bryce added, looking Donnie up and down. "You raped my friends." Donnie said angrily as he glared Bryce down.
"Maybe I did, maybe I didn't. Who's to say? You and I both know they wanted it anyway." Bryce said calmly. "Really? One was drunk and practically unconscious in her own bedroom while the other just simply got into a hot tub. That just automatically means they want to lose their virginity to you?" Donnie questioned pointedly. "Yes. Yes it does." Bryce answered. "You raped them." Donnie stated again. "You want to call it rape, call it rape. Same difference." Bryce said, shrugging it off as if it were nothing. Having had enough, Donnie puts all his anger into charging at Bryce again as he tackles him to the ground once more, getting in a few punches on the senior before being overpowered as Bryce threw him to the ground and repeatedly punched him in the face. Punch after punch, Donnie felt his head hit the floor with each one from Bryce's strength. Pretty soon, Donnie also felt a few punches landing to his stomach as well.
"If I were you, Jensen, I'd stay down." Bryce said as he now loomed over a half-conscious Donnie who lied on his side, leaning his head against the wooden floor of Bryce's home as he felt numb and bloodied as he was aware of the blood decorating his face. After that, Bryce simply left the room. Once Bryce was out of sight, Donnie slowly and painfully pushed himself up off the floor. Once he was up, Donnie scanned the room, noticing how the front door was open. Walking - more like limping - towards the door, Donnie saw a freaked out Hannah sitting on the ground, blankly staring at the bike that was next to her. "Hannah!" Donnie called, successfully gaining her attention as her head shot up in his direction. "Are you ok?" Donnie asked after slightly limping over to her, stopping in front of her as Hannah stood up, never breaking eye contact with him. Instead of answering his question, Hannah pulled Donnie into a tight hug, holding him in a hard grip, mimicking a toddler afraid to leave their parents on the first day of school. Slightly shocked from the hug and feeling pain resurface in his stomach, Donnie slowly wrapped his arms around the scared girl, holding her tightly to his chest as he no longer cared about any pain he was feeling. "It's ok." He whispered as he registered the feeling of wetness on the shoulder of his jacket and the now shaking form of the girl he was holding. "Come on. Let's get you home." Donnie suggested as he removed one arm from around Hannah to pick up his bike before slowly starting to make his way back towards his house. "And by home, I mean my place. My paren't aren't home, anyway." Donnie said, feeling her tense up as he mentioned taking her home. Hannah slightly nodded in response as she slowly started to walk with her bloodied friend, never letting go of him as the two sluggishly walked side-by-side.
As the pair finally reached Donnie's house after an hour or so, due to the slow pace they walked, Donnie placed his bike in the garage before gently leading a still shaking Hannah Baker inside. Noticing she was still shaking a bit, Donnie removed his jacket before placing it over the girl's shoulders and pulling her into his arms once again. "You're ok now. He can't do anything to you." Donnie comforted, knowing very well not to use the high school senior's name directly after what just happened. When Hannah pulled away slightly and looked up at him, Donnie immidiatly saw the question she was silently asking him through her eyes. Slightly nodding to her, Donnie lead her upstairs to his room.
"Here. These will be much more comfortable and warmer to sleep in." Donnie said, handing the girl a pair of thin sweatpants and one of his t-shirts from his dresser. Getting the feeling she didn't want to be left alone, Donnie turned around, allowing the girl to change into the clothes he had provided for her.
"I'll be right back. I promise." Donnie said after Hannah had finished changing. Seeing a slight nod come from the girl as a response, Donnie slowly left his room to head to the bathroom to get himself cleaned up as best he could.
Once he entered his room again, Donnie saw Hannah quietly sitting on the edge of his bed, blankly staring out the window. Not saying anything, Donnie got on his bed as well, moving behind the girl as he wrapped his arms around her again, instantly feeling her respond as she placed a hand on one of his arms as she leaned forward, crying into his arms as well. "It's ok now. I'm here, and I'm never leaving your side." Donnie reassured as he continued to hold her in his arms, her back pressed against his chest. Knowing she needed the comfort, Donnie would continue to hold her for as long as she needed, not planning to let go just yet as he was letting her be the one to let go when she was ready to.
