HOSPITAL
[ ☼ ]

"I bet you're ready to get out of here." A Nurse is standing in Elena's hospital room, writing something on a clipboard. Elena is fully dressed and standing with the Nurse.

"You have no idea." Elena says. "Most of all, I can't wait to see my boyfriend."

The Nurse smiles. "The cute, squirrelly looking guy?" She asks and Elena nods. "Oh he's handsome. You're one lucky girl."

"I think he's the lucky one." Elena says as the Nurse leaves. Immediately, Crowley appears in front of her. She sneers. "You have the nerve to be stepping in front of me right now."

"Oh put the claws away, Princess. You're not going to do anything, especially not with that seeping wound you have there." Crowley says. "I just wanted to say, my apologies. It's about time that keep my pets in check."

"What do you want Crowley." Elena asks.

"I just wanted to mention that there's no hard feelings." Crowley says. "And send you a message. Tell the Winchesters to back off."

Elena crosses her arms. "I don't know what you're talking about." She says.

"While you have been all 'Grey's Anatomy', Sam and Dean have been cracking the Demon tablet." Crowley says. "Well, farewell. I hope you have a nice recovery." He disappears.

Elena lets out a sigh and walks out of her room. She looks sad, but when she sees Dean down the hallway with flowers, she immediately runs up to him. Elena plants a million kisses on his face as Dean looks around.

"Hey, you're making me look uncool." Dean whispers.

"You were never cool." Elena says as Dean hands her flowers. "Aw, you got me flowers?"

"I thought you might like them." Dean says. "And I thought you might also like to go out to eat."

Elena smiles and leans against Dean. "That sounds amazing. Where are we going?" She asks.

"You'll see." Dean places his arm across Elena's shoulder as they walk out.

PARK
[ ☼ ]

"You brought me to a park?" Elena asks and looks at Dean.

Dean pulls a basket out of the trunk. "It's a tip that I pulled out of 'Sam's Book of Failed Relationships'." He says.

"That's not funny." Elena says and elbows him in the stomach. Dean grabs Elena's hand and interlaces their fingers. "Dean. You're holding my hand...in public."

"Yeah, so?" He says.

"You never want to hold my hand." Elena says. "You say that only sappy couples do that. You torment those couples."

Dean shrugs. "It's not so bad." He says as they stop at a hill. "This is our stop." He says.

"It's beautiful." She says. Dean lays down a blanket under the tree and he sits down. Elena watches him as he unloads the basket. "You look ridiculous in that jacket. It's got to be like 90 degrees out here."

"Doesn't bother me." Dean says as he hands her a plate. "Come on, eat up."

Elena continues to watch him, but stops eating. "What's wrong with you?" She asks.

"What do you mean?" Dean has a mouthful of sandwich.

"The holding hands, the flowers, the picnic." Elena says. "What are you up to?"

"Why do I have to be up to something to do something nice?" He asks.

"I don't know, but it's suspicious." Elena says.

Dean reaches across the basket and wipes food off of her lip with his thumb and licks it. "Let's just enjoy our lunch, okay?" He says and Elena seems weary, but nods.

IMPALA
[ ☾]

Later, Dean and Elena are in the Impala, holding hands in the front seats. "You've had a long day at the hospital." Dean says. "You should get some rest. I'll wake you up when we reach the bunker."

"You're so sweet." Elena says. "I love you."

"And I love you." Dean says as Elena leans on the window. Dean looks straight ahead with a worried look on his face.

MYSTIC FALLS, VIRGINIA

CAROLINE'S PLACE
[ ☾]

Dean taps a sleeping Elena. "Hey, we're here." He says as Elena looks around. They both get out of the car and Elena feels the similarity.

"This doesn't look like the bunker. What are we doing at Caroline's?" Elena sees Dean take out a suitcase. "What are you doing?"

"You're going to stay here for a while." Dean says.

"What why?" Elena asks as she touches the place where she got stabbed. "Oh no, is this about what happened the other day because I'm fine."

"You almost died Elena!" Dean yells. "That's what happens when you're around me. People I love get hurt."

"Of course because that's what comes with the job!"

"So why are you still here?" Dean asks. "I'm bad, Elena, I am bad for you, so why wouldn't you have run away from me as far as humanly possible?"

Elena steps closer to Dean and grabs his hands. "Because I love you, Dean, because I chose you, and because I stand by my choice." She says.

"Well, now I'm choosing, and I'm choosing to let you go." Dean says and let's her hands go.

"What? No, Dean-" Elena starts.

"I am choosing to not have to think about how you must feel every time some ghost from my past comes into our life." Dean says. "I'm choosing to relieve you of having to defend me for every awful thing I've ever done."

"Stop acting like I'm perfect. Dean, I've done horrible things, too." Elena says, voice shaky. "You think I'm gonna stand here and judge you after I find out that you've been in Purgatory for a whole year?"

"Stop defending me!" Dean yells and Elena flinches. "I won't change who I am. I can't... But I refuse to change you." He says softly.

"Is that what you're doing." Elena says with tears in her eyes. "Trying to make me hate you?"

"Goodbye, Elena." Dean says as he walks back to the Impala.

"When it's real you can't walk away." Elena says as she chases Dean. "Don't you dare walk away from me, Dean. Dean!" He gets into the Impala and drives away. Elena breaks down and starts to cry.

FLASHBACK

BUNKER
[ ☼ ]

"Why are you grabbing Elena's stuff?" Sam asks. Dean comes into the main room with various suitcases and duffel bags.

"Look, I don't have enough time to argue with you this. It's my choice."

"By breaking up with the one girl that brought you happiness?" Sam asks. "Dean, there's got to be another way."

"There is not other way, Sam." Dean says. "She got hurt because none of us were there to help her. Hell, she almost died right in my arms."

Sam sighs. "What are you gonna do when Demons or other monsters find her? You think sending her away will help?" He asks.

"Better than being with me."

"Look, I understand what you're going through. When I was with Elena–" Sam starts.

"But that's not the same thing." Dean says. "You abandoned her to get hype in demons blood and sneak around with Ruby."

"So this is how it ends." Sam says, frustration in his voice. "Elena's a good person, she loves you Dean. You're just gonna throw it all away?"

"This is how it ends."
