Chapter 34
As Hannah Black's eyes fluttered open, the gathering of people that awaited her revival held their breath as one.
The girl groaned sleepily as she took in the two young doctors and the nice nurse who'd gave her the medicine, as well as three doctors that she hadn't seen before. Also in front of her were her parents and sister. All three of her relatives were so close that they were practically in the hospital bed with her.
"Oh, my baby" Her mother sobbed.
"What . . . where?" The groggy girl asked.
"It's ok Hannah. Take your time" One of the new doctors told her. He had dark brown hair and really needed a shave.
"This is Doctors Dawson, Hunter and Wilson. They helped with taking care of you too" Doctor Harrington smiled at her after pointing to each person individually. They all smiled or waved back awkwardly.
"How do you feel?" The girl's father asked.
"I want to go home" Hannah groaned.
The whole room laughed quietly before the nurse told her that she would need to stay in her bed for just a little while longer.
"We'll give you guys some space while Doctor Harrington checks on your daughter to see how things are looking. But so far so good" Another doctor, an older one, said to Hannah's parents.
"Thank you Doctor Hunter" Her mom smiled, still fighting back tears. The only difference now was that they were tears of joy.

"How is she?" Chris asked Carly as he watched the room empty out. He just asked whoever left the room first. He'd thought it best for him to stay out of the girl's room, despite wanting to see her as much as everyone else did. He didn't want to crowd her too much and after her family had heard that she was awake, they seemed to forget about him instantly. He knew it wasn't personal though.
"Well . . ." Carly started. "The early signs are good. Obviously we're going to have to keep a close eye on her but any immediate danger has passed".
"Oh thank god" Chris looked towards the heavens without even realising.
"Don't thank him, thank Doctor Hunter" Lee told him. "He's the one who came up with the plan".
Jack rolled his eyes and chuckled. If this had been said a few months ago, he would have probably accepted the compliment with nothing more than a shrug and a knowing grin.
But Doctor Jack Hunter was a different man now.
"I was just doing my job" He smiled graciously.
"And we're lucky to have you, boss" Doctor Wilson patted him on the shoulder. He was also surprised at how much Jack had changed.
"Yeah . . . well . . . I couldn't have my last patient not being ok now, could I?" Jack said.
"Wait what?" Charlie said, hanging around at the back of the congregation in the corridor.
"Did you say last patient?" Lee also picked up on what Jack was saying.
"Yes I did" Doctor Hunter confirmed simply.
"Why?" Asked Carly. Jack sighed before speaking again. He'd been waiting as long as possible until he'd have to explain this to anyone.
"I've decided that it's best if I move back to Baltimore" He told them. "It's nothing to do with any of you, or nothing against this place here. Despite everything, I've actually enjoyed my time here. And I would like to think that I've made some friends for life here too"
"Even me?" Charlie joked.
"Even you" Jack laughed.
"Of course we're friends" Said Lee. "But you don't have to go".
"Lee's right" Carly pleaded. "This is your home now, and if you've just made some friends here, isn't a bit of a waste to just leave?"
"Maybe, in a way" He conceded.
"Then why don't you stay?" Asked Chris who'd remained silent until that point. Not only was Jack now his boss, but he too considered him a friend, despite basically being chucked out of the hospital by him when they'd first met.
"Because the whole reason I came here . . . the reason I left Baltimore in the first place is because I was running from something. Now, I realise that I didn't have to. I was going to have to face this at some point eventually, but now I feel like I have nothing to run from. Nothing to be afraid of and that's all thanks to all of you. So from the bottom of my heart . . . thank you all" The way that Jack spoke told them all that they needed to know. His mind was made up and nothing was going to change it.
"When are you leaving?" Asked Lee.
"Within the next couple of days. I want to make sure that young Hannah is doing ok before I go"
"But wait!" Carly cried, a thought just striking her. "Who's going to replace you? Doctor Kent isn't supposed to be back for another three months or something".
"I'm aware of that" Answered Jack. "I called her a couple of days ago to discuss it with her. She was hammered. So I tried again last night and she, soberly, agreed that Doctor Dawson will take over my duties until she returns".
"What?" Lee gasped. His expression changed to one of panic so quickly that it almost seemed like he hadn't been paying attention until then.
"Come on Lee, don't act so surprised" Jack laughed. "Everyone knows you basically run this place anyway. This would just make it official"
"He has a point" Carly told her husband proudly.
Lee smiled. He'd always thought that way too but it sounded different coming from someone else. It made it more real.
"Excuse me!" Came the worried cry of a nurse as she ran almost into the centre of the group that had taken over the hallway. It was the same nurse that had first brought Hannah's case to Doctor Hunter's attention. "Can I get some help please?" She asked.
"What's going on?" Carly asked worriedly.
"I have to do some blood tests for this patient. He's being a bit of a handful. For some reason he's refusing to keep his clothes on" Sighed the nurse.
With a little snigger, Charlie stepped forward.
"Come on, I'll help. Naked men are my specialty" He smirked. The nurse stared at him with a worried expression until he finally realised why. "Not like that!" He yelled whilst shaking his head before the pair disappeared into the distance to see to the nude man.
"I better get going too" Mark sighed. "Lives ain't gonna save themselves" He said before heading off in the opposite direction.
"Speaking of getting going, I have one more favour to ask of you, Doctor Dawson, if that's ok?" Jack muttered.
"Name it" Lee replied, the two doctors walking down the hall side by side as they discussed, leaving just Carly and Chris now in the suddenly spacious corridor.
"Are you alright?" Chris asked the nurse, laughing as he registered how their roles had reversed now too.
"Yeah I'm fine. Why?" She asked.
"I don't know, you just . . . you're smiling a lot" Chris chuckled again, this time at how ridiculous his statement sounded.
"I don't know" Shrugged Carly. "Days like today just remind me why I'm doing this. I'm going to head back over to the waiting room and see what we've got. I'm feeling inspired now after everything with Hannah, so those diseases in there better watch out 'cause I'm about go all ninja nurse on them and kick their ass!" She giggled.
"Whoa! No more Mrs. Nice nurse, huh?" Chris joked.
"Exactly!" Carly cried with excitement. It was amazing how Hannah's recovery had lifted the mood of everyone in the hospital. "What are you going to do now?" She asked her former patient.
"I don't know actually" He admitted. "Today was actually my day off until Doctor Hunter called me in. But now I just don't feel like going home, you know?"
"Well if you're feeling as inspired as I am, I could really use a hand with the patients?" Carly suggested, to which Chris agreed instantly.
As the two reached the end of the hall, they had to stop themselves from crashing into Doctor Nagatomo who appeared in front of them like a rabbit out of a hat.
"Oh! I am sorry" He said.
"Shinsuke!" Carly cried. "How are you feeling now?"
"Much better, thank you. I had a pretty long nap. I am feeling very refreshed" Shinsuke smiled cheekily.
"Yeah we noticed" Chris laughed.
"So . . ." Doctor Nagatomo spoke again after shaking the cobwebs and any remnants of sleep from his head. "What did I miss?"
Carly and Chris looked at each other before they both burst out laughing at the same time.
It was going to take quite some time to get Shinsuke caught up.

When Lee told Jack that he'd do him a favour, he wasn't quite expecting this.
A few days after Hannah Black woke up, Lee stood back, shielding his eyes from the Baltimore sun, watching Doctor Hunter as he laid a large bouquet of flowers down in front of a looming black marble gravestone.
Despite the sunshine, there was a mild wind blowing through the cemetery and he was already regretting wearing casual clothes for a change.
He remained stoic as he stared straight at the stone, reading the golden carvings, somehow in awe of it.
In Loving Memory of Natalie Hunter, Beloved Wife, Daughter and Sister, 1971 – 2014
"Hi honey. I'm home" Jack whispered to the soul beneath the dirt at his feet, kneeling down and placing his palm on it too, as if it would somehow bring him closer to her.
Lee didn't know why he was here but he felt he was best to remain in the background silently, watching Jack like the stone watched over Natalie.
"And I'm never leaving again" Jack spoke louder this time, and a little more defiantly. Saying it aloud making it official to him.
Jack stood up and walked back over towards his friend Lee.
"You ok?" Asked Lee.
"I will be. It's just weird being back here"
"How long has it been?"
"Too long" Jack's tone told Lee that he didn't want to divulge anything else about it. "Thank you for coming with me, Lee. I needed this"
"It was an honour" Lee spoke sincerely. He hadn't wanted to mention it but this was only the third of the fifty states in the country that he'd ever actually been to. He hadn't expected it to be under these circumstances though. More surprisingly, it wasn't as bad as he'd expected it to be either.
"Well look, we better get going, I we've got a dinner reservation downtown. I swear you're going to love this place" Jack placed an assuring hand on Lee's arm before walking back to where they'd parked his rental car.
"Yeah, then back to the daily grind back home" Rolling his eyes, Lee replied. "What you going to do for a job now?"
"I'll get a job at any hospital in the city. I'm Jack Hunter" The older doctor reminded him.
"Fair point" Lee laughed.
"Speaking of work, I have one last piece of advice for you"
"You're not my boss anymore" Lee joked.
"Then consider it as some advice from a friend" Jack smirked. "Don't be scared".
"Of what?" Lee shrugged.
"Of anything. Lee, you have an extraordinary talent"
"I know I'm a good doctor" Lee shrugged again. He figured that Jack was going somewhere with this but he wasn't sure where.
"I'm not talking about your medical knowledge. I'm talking about your ability to make everyone around you better. Not just your patients. Your friends, family and colleagues alike" Jack stated.
"I think you're mixing me up with the other Dawson" Lee sighed, thinking of Carly's cheerful nature and endless enthusiasm.
"No I have the right one here. I did have a nice chat with your wife before we came out though, which is why I need you to hear this" Jack laughed. She had taken them to the airport and had said her goodbyes to Jack (patching up any remaining differences) whilst Lee collected their bags from the trunk. "You once told me that you and I were the same, and at the time I didn't believe you. But once I opened up my mind to the possibility, I realised that you were right. You and I have both been through incredible amounts of pain and suffering".
"That's cheerful".
"But the point is we survived it. And we came out on top. We got through it. We've already beaten the biggest hurdles that we're going to get thrown. Anything else is just . . . baby steps" Jack smiled. Memory lane was a very different place for him now.
"What are you saying?" Lee asked, not really buying into this new philosophical version of his former boss.
"I'm saying it's never too late" Doctor Hunter tried a simpler tactic. They'd reached the car and were standing at opposite sides now, staring at each other, each with a hand on their door handle. "You and I both know better than anybody that every day is a blessing. And it should be lived as one. You owe it to yourself. And to everyone else".
Lee nodded.
"Ok. Thanks, Doctor Hunter".
It may have taken a while, and a lot of motivation from Jack but he now thought that he knew what Doctor Hunter was getting at.
And he knew exactly what he was going to do about it.

And here is the final chapter of No More Mrs. Nice Nurse!
What did you guys think? I wanted to give every character the best send off possible and I hope you guys agreed with my choices. If not, please let me know what you would have done. I wont be mad!
If any part of this chapter stood out to you then I would be forever grateful if you let me know. I'm absolutely in love with this one.
The song midway through the chapter is "What's Left" by 3 Doors Down. As soon as I'd worked out the ending to the story, I had this song in mind. I'm not ashamed to admit to shedding a tear while listening to it and reading the final scene.
Now without further ado, turn the page for one last surprise!
