Chapter 29
Chris paced back and forth at a hundred miles an hour outside Doctor Hunters office. He looked a little different to Lee in his street clothes instead of a hospital gown but his face carried the same worried expression on it.
Lee and Summer both watched him, enthralled. Their eyes darted about like a set of pendulums. Finally though, Lee snapped out of the daze.
"Will you stop it?" He hissed. "You're making me nervous"
They were waiting for Doctor Hunter to return from seeing one of his patients. Lee hoped that whatever news Jack was about to deliver to said patient, was good. Not only for the patient in question, but for the forthcoming meeting to discuss Chris' idea. He sensed that if Jack was in a bad mood then this may be a very short meeting.
"It just feels weird being back here" Chris exhaled deeply.
"You're going to do great, just tell him what you told me and Doctor Dawson and it'll be impossible for him to shut you down" Summer encouraged.
"Ha. Not likely" Lee thought he'd spoken under his breath but he was immediately made aware that they had both heard him.
"What do you mean?" Chris asked nervously. He was sweating more than when he'd decided to play with himself on his first visit to the hospital.
"Nothing" Lee said quickly. He'd seen that Jack was seconds away from walking up to them and so he stood up, attracting Chris' attention.
"Gentlemen. Doctor Harrington" Jack greeted them. His voice, as usual, gave nothing away to his emotional state. He unlocked his office and motioned for the three of them to enter first.
As with most offices in a hospital, there were only two chairs opposite the Doctor's desk so Lee let the other two take them. They were the ones who were most likely to do all of the talking so Lee hopped up onto the bed that was in the room and was amazed at how squishy it actually was. He was only ever looking at patients on it if they couldn't sit or if it was easier to see whatever he needed to see.
Jack sat down at the other side of the desk and began shuffling the various papers, charts and whatever else he had on there and setting them off to the side. Finally, he cast his full attention towards his guests, narrowing his eyes disapprovingly at Lee's position for a brief moment.
"So" He said before a long pause, commanding his audience. "I hear you have something for me, Mr. Taylor. Care to explain?" He asked Chris.
"Umm" Chris mumbled before Summer grabbed a hold of his arm and nodded to him, as if steadying him. Whatever she'd done, it worked because Chris began a second later. "I wanted to pitch an idea to you. Something for the hospital that I hope you'll at least consider"
"Which is?" Hunter asked, watching Chris like a hawk. His sweating had only intensified since entering the air deprived office.
"Just tell him what you told me" Lee chimed from his secluded spot.
"Pfffff" Chris blew out any extra air he had in his lungs before resuming. "Ok, so I had this idea. I know better than anybody how stressful it can be here and not know what's going on. I felt it and I saw it in my parents and my friends whenever they came to visit. I saw so many worried looking people whenever I went for any scans or tests and I know you guys see this sort of thing every day, and maybe you get used to it. I don't know, but for me it scared me. More than I already was"
"Go on" Jack instructed. Chris looked at his girlfriend before he obeyed.
"Summer really helped me out. Her idea about listening to music really helped me relax"
"Most patients bring their own music" Jack pointed out.
"I get that. But what if you had some sort of support group for while people were waiting for results or news or whatever? I thought about old people who don't know what's going on or kids! Kids who don't understand what their mom's or dads are going through. We could round them up, play games, help them chill with music, get them to know each other, group activities, making friends, whatever! I just think that something like that could work. We could even have someone explain to them what's going on, in a simple way so that they can understand. No offence, but some of the things you doctors say just sounds like nonsense to me, and probably to a lot of other people"
"And you think you should be the one to head up this scheme?" Jack asked.
"Not just me. Anyone else who wants to help. I think it could only benefit from somebody like me you knows what they're going through. Again no offence, but sometimes you doctor types can come across as cold and uncaring. I realise you've got to try and keep it together but it's not easy to see when you're stressed out".
Jack looked at Chris before seemingly staring straight through him. He then turned his attention to Lee.
"And you're on board with this idea?" He asked.
"I think it has potential" Lee shrugged. "He's got a fair point, people don't understand what we're trying to tell them and plus . . . this would save us dealing with some of the family and all that. We can stay focused on our patients and everything else we have to do. It might be better coming from somebody who's already been through what they're feeling"
All attention in the room turned back to Jack. They stared as Doctor Hunter mulled it over in his head. Lee could practically see the different thoughts drifting back and forth in the expression of his boss. Finally his twitching face seemed to settle on a decision.
"Ok" He nodded.
"Ok?" Summer asked for everyone.
"What does that mean exactly?" Chris asked carefully, as if he was scared that the constant questions would set Doctor Hunter off on some angry tirade.
Lee was wondering the same thing, his interest piqued.
"It means . . . I'm willing to give you a chance with this programme" Jack told them before rapidly adding "But before you get too excited, I do have a couple of conditions"
"Sure, of course!" Chris grinned, clearly excited just at the fact that it was happening at all. He probably didn't even care what the conditions were.
"You're going to need someone to oversee it. We have very important procedures and protocols to stick to so I'm going to put Doctor Dawson forward as your point of contact between your patients and ours"
"What?" Lee gulped but received no reply.
"That's ok with me" Chris nodded.
"If he can, Doctor Dawson can take charge or delegate it to someone else. He's a valuable asset to the hospital and his time should be spent where it is most needed. This project of yours is not a priority. Do you understand?" Jack asked, noticing Chris' obvious enthusiasm.
"Yes sir" Chris recomposed himself, as if sensing that he needed to show Jack how serious he could be.
"The second condition I have is to do with this fascination you have with music"
"What about it?" Summer asked. The musical aspect of everything was technically her idea.
"It needs to be very carefully managed. I'm not opposed to the use of inspirational or happy music but we'll give you a couple of spare rooms if they are available for it. And the volume must be low enough for no one else to hear it" Jack was speaking with such passion in his voice and was wearing such a grim expression that it was impossible not to take him seriously.
"Doesn't that defeat the purpose?" Summer snorted, unimpressed. Chris held her back somewhat, wanting to hear what Jack had to say.
"I don't care" Doctor Hunter told her flatly. "As much as I would love to tell you both otherwise, hospitals aren't always a happy place. We do what we can for people but there are still people dying here all the time. Others aren't so lucky. They have to be told that they need to spend years living with an illness that simply isn't going to go away, or get told that they can't ever have children. And I don't know about you, but I don't really feel like telling somebody that while the "YMCA" is blasting down the hall"
"Sounds fair enough" Chris nodded in acceptance.
Lee didn't want to laugh. What Doctor Hunter was saying was very serious. But sometimes his imagination really did get the better of him and this was definitely one of those times.
"And finally" Jack continued. "This is just a trial scheme for now. The first month you'll do voluntarily. I don't have time, or quite frankly the energy, to readjust the funds that our ward has been given. If it's a success after that, then we can look into it" As he finished, he offered Chris his hand to shake as a physical recognition of the offer he was making him. "Deal?"
"Deal" Chris shook the hand offered immediately.
"Excellent. Well you two go ahead and draw up a game plan and have it in my office by the end of the day. As always, Doctor Harrington, if something comes up then I'm going to need you to step away from this and return to your day job, is that clear?"
"Crystal" Doctor Harrington smiled, at both Chris and Jack.
Summer and Chris left the office happily but not before Chris thanked Jack what seemed to be a hundred times more, leaving Lee as the only guest in the boss' office.
"That was good" Doctor Dawson thought aloud as he stepped up to stand alongside Doctor Hunter who was watching his other two visitors as they skipped down the hall.
"What was? Letting the boy have his . . . his . . . thing?"
"That" Lee admitted, "And the way you handled it"
"What do you mean?" Asked Jack.
"Well, for starters I almost thought you had a soul" Lee mocked, punching his boss' shoulder before he left him as well.
Just before he turned the corner where he'd be safe from any delayed eruption that Doctor Hunter may suffer, Lee heard Jack telling himself off.
"Shit!"
Lee knew he probably wouldn't like what his next task would end up being but for now, he was perfectly content with the smile that Jack's annoyance had brought him.
