Chapter 1

"I can't believe I'm about to do this" Lee Dawson mumbled as he stared at himself in the mirror.

His light brown hair had been gelled multiple times before he felt that he had the perfect look for what the day warranted and he was clean shaven for the first time in months. He almost felt naked without his trusty beard but this was one of the few demands that Carly had made.

At least he was happy with his suit though. He'd always had it but very rarely used it. Lee wasn't the type of person to attend many formal events. It was all black but he had a brand new white shirt on underneath it and a red boutonniere attached to his left breast pocket. This was probably the smartest he'd ever dressed, which was quite a feat for someone who had to wear a shirt and smart pants to work every day. However that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. He actually kind of liked looking like this. He wouldn't do it all the time because then it would lose its appeal but for every so often he might consider it.

"You don't have anything to worry about, I'll be right beside you the whole time" Lou Johnson told him, putting his hands on Lee's shoulders in a bit to comfort his fellow doctor.

"That doesn't really fill me with confidence you know" Lee joked.

"Lee, I've seen you spot meningitis in someone who didn't even think they were sick. I'm sure this will be a walk in the park for a man of your calibre" Lou smiled. He wore a suit that was almost identical to Lee's. The dark colours really brought out how red his face was; Lee always thought that Lou once got so badly sunburnt that he never returned to his normal colour. Despite his beetroot face, the suit truly complimented Lou's dark silver hair. His hair had started to thin and recede in recent years but he was looking good for someone his age.

"You'd think that" Lee shrugged. "But you know Carly. She has a way of getting to me"

Lou laughed. He knew that alright.

Lee and Lou stood side by side at the altar, when they heard the organ change its tone. They stood to attention like soldiers awaiting orders from their colonel.

"This is it" Lou pointed out the obvious as the chords of "Here Comes the Bride" filled the spacious building.

Lee gulped at his friends words and decided to look everywhere but the direction that everyone else did. They were in a church, a modern one, which although it still kept the classic alter and organ set up beneath a large stained glass window and the wooden pews at the side of the wide open space, there were plenty of regular windows that allowed brilliant rays of sunshine through and no lit candles that he so often saw on television. It still had the traditional pointed roof but the cream paint that covered the place made it look a lot less creepy.

He heard the guests all gasping as one, noting that it was a "good gasp" if such a thing existed. His heartbeat was going at a million miles an hour but he plucked up the courage to finally look straight in front of him, and boy was he glad that he did.

Carly looked beautiful as ever, even more so than ever. He was used to seeing her perform miracles at the hospital but to somehow look better than she usually did was the greatest one she'd ever done.

Her blonde hair was tied into what he could only describe as a cross between a bun and a pleat, with a few strands hanging, loosely curled to one side and had a white veil hanging from it. Her blue eyes were wide with delight and her huge grin made her cheekbones stand out far more than they normally did. Lee never paid attention to dresses but he did today. It was a strapless one, beginning just above her breasts and trailing all the way down so that he couldn't see her feet. There was a belt in the middle, around her waist but it was also white. If someone just quickly glanced at her then they probably wouldn't have noticed it but Lee was paying close attention to every part of his fiancé.

He couldn't help but smile at the sight of her. They both smiled, their stares unwavering during her whole walk down the aisle. Even her dad was smiling, which amazed Lee. The round, bald man wasn't exactly Lee's biggest fan when they'd first met but he was slowly coming round to him.

Mr Oliver kissed his daughter on the cheek and whispered something to her that no one else could hear. He then approached Lee and shook his hand firmly before taking a seat in the first pew next to the rest of his family.

"Hey there!" Carly smiled at Lee, unable to stop herself from waving, despite the fact that she was just feet away from him.

"Hey yourself. You look nice today" He grinned.

"Looking pretty sharp yourself. And you shaved!" She cheered. Carly and Lee had stuck to tradition and hadn't seen each other the day before the ceremony.

"Anything for you" Lee fluttered his eyebrows at her like a flirty teenage girl. This was what they were always like around each other. They brought out the funniest sides of each other, which was one of the main reasons Lee had asked her Carly to marry him.

The minister began talking and proceeded to get to the vows. They had decided to stick with the traditional vows instead of writing their own. They weren't against the idea but with them both working as much as they could, they found it increasingly difficult to sit down and think about them. Whenever they did get a day off, they usually spent it lounging around the house or going out to see a movie. To some, it didn't sound like a very exciting life but it was all Lee and Carly ever wanted.

After they both said all of their "I do's" like they'd practiced a million times in their heads and no one spoke up to say that they shouldn't be married, the priest said the words they'd both been longing to hear.

"Then, by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife! You may kiss the bride!" The old man beamed. He had actually first met Lee and Carly when he was admitted to hospital for a stomach bug and they both grew so fond of his friendly nature that they decided to request him to be a part of their wedding. He agreed instantly.

Lee smiled wider than ever as he grabbed his new wife's waist and held her steady as he brought his lips onto hers. The kiss lasted forever but it still wasn't long enough. Despite the loud cheers and claps from all of the guests, Lee and Carly's closed eyes blocked out more than just their vision. It felt to both of them that it was their first kiss, when in reality they'd had over a million more.

Once all the pomp and ceremony of them leaving the church arm in arm and the posing for pictures was over, they were driven to the hotel that they'd chosen to hold their reception. With them both working in the medical profession, they were able to afford the most expensive one in town. They weren't normally one's to concern themselves with this sort of thing but they figured that they might as well spoil themselves a little. This included a three course meal which left everyone in attendance, including Carly's whole family, Lee's mother, Doctor Johnson and many other friends from work regretting the size of their respective appetites.

Lee was happy that all that had passed that day had done so without a hitch. He'd originally thought that planning the wedding was stressful, but he now knew that it was nothing compared to actually partaking in one. He felt that the worst parts were over now but he was still a little bit nervous about what was about to happen. It was speech time. Lou stood up to begin as the room fell silent.

"First of all I want to point out that although I'm used to having this many people in one place, they are usually all in bed and too unwell to yell at me so please be kind!" It was a typical Lou joke but it achieved some ripples of laughter.

"When Lee asked me to be his best man, I was blown away. I knew he didn't have many friends but I didn't realise it was so bad that he had to reach out to me for it", he hated to admit it but Lee actually liked that one.

"Seriously though, it was a true honour, one which I accepted instantly. When I first met Lee, he was something of a prodigy. One of the most talented doctors I'd ever seen. And although we haven't always seen eye to eye on a lot of things, he has always been very respectful to me, and to anyone around him. He isn't always the most conversational person in the world but there is always a silent respect with him. He has had his issues, but I truly feel that Carly has used her wonderful nurse magic to heal all of his wounds. Just like Lee and I, they didn't always agree on things; but there has always been an undeniable chemistry between them, and no matter what obstacles have stood in their way, and there has been a few! They have always found their way back to each other. And that's something that I think says the most about them. They both fight for what they want, and what they feel is right. We're all lucky that they are always fighting for the same cause. Each other. So I would like to have a toast. To Lee and Carly, don't stop fighting"

Everyone repeated his last sentence before drinking from their champagne glasses. Lee even spotted a few people slyly wiping tears out of their eyes. His mother was by far the least subtle of them all. He smiled at the image but not for too long. Now it was his turn.

"Well, who knew my worst trait could be such a good punch line for a speech" He laughed, as did his audience. "I honestly want to thank Lou for everything. He's done more for me than just about anybody and I really wouldn't be brave enough to stand up here if it wasn't for him. I also want to thank each and every one of you for coming today. It truly means the world to me. And you know I'm being sincere because I've already said thank you more times today than any other day before so you should all feel pretty grateful! Most importantly though, I want to thank Carly. Because without her none of this would be possible. Of course when I first met her, I hated her. I couldn't stand her!" Everyone laughed once again, including Carly. "I believe on our first meeting I actually told her to leave me alone. Of course she didn't. And she never listened to anything that I said to her and I truly didn't like her for it. So how ironic is it, that looking back now it's the thing that I love about her most. She's so passionate about everything she does and she never gives up. When I met her I wasn't in a very good place. I'd met a lot of people that I thought would always be there for me, but it turned out that they never were in the first place. With Carly I know that she will always be there, because it's what she does. She's the first person that never gave up on me, and I will be forever grateful to her for that. And plus, she looks even hotter than usual today! So ladies and gentlemen, please raise a glass to the one and only, Mrs. Carly Dawson!" He'd wanted to say that for the longest time.

As he watched everyone toast to him and his wife, he took another longing glance at Carly. He truly felt like the luckiest man in the whole world. The smile she gave him when she caught him looking was all the proof that he needed that he was never going to feel miserable again.

*

Now that the hardest parts of the wedding was over it left the one part that both Lee and Carly were confident that they could do without getting nervous. The party! Everyone had had time to let their food digest and to get themselves some more drinks and were now eagerly awaiting the re-arrival of the happy couple. The guests were all sat around a number of tables in the hotels ballroom. There was a wide dance floor in the centre of the room with the tables forming an arch around it. At the top of the floor was stationed a DJ that had been hired for the evening, who now asked for the rooms attention. He was given it instantly.

"Ladies and gentlemen please welcome, for their first dance as a married couple, Mr. And Mrs. Dawson!"

There was another round of applause as Lee and Carly entered the room hand in hand and made their way to the dance floor.

"I could get used to these cheers" He whispered to her.

"I don't think your ego needs any more boosting" She laughed.

The lights dimmed, lit only by the spotlight that shone on them and the flashes from the cameras and cell phones that were looking to capture the moment. The silence that had followed the cheers was finally broken when the opening guitar chords of "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" by the band Heart began playing and Lee and Carly once again began laughing.

"I can't believe I let you talk me into this" He chuckled as they began trying their best to dance along to the song. It wasn't either of their biggest strengths.

"You mean the song or the marriage?" Carly replied.

"Would it be insensitive if I said both?" Lee joked.

"Maybe a little! But come on this is cute! This is definitely our song"

"Cute isn't really something that I aim for; and don't you think it's a little weird that we're dancing to this when both are mom's are watching?" He asked.

They both quickly looked over to their respective mothers and were pleased to see that they were both grinning from ear to ear.

"I think they'll let us off for this one day" Carly shrugged, still not letting go of her husband.

After they'd had their first dance, and a few more, they began mingling with their guests. There were so many people attending that they wanted to make sure they could talk to everyone at least once. They approached Carly's parents, with Mr. Oliver opening his arms wide so that he could give Lee a hug.

"Welcome to the family son" He smiled.

"It's a pleasure Mr. Oliver" Lee replied.

"Please, call me John. We're family now"

Lee thanked him. Despite having a rather unpleasant first meeting, Lee and John now got on rather well. As did Lee and Irene, Carly's mother.

"This has been the perfect day" She gleamed. Her face was beginning to show the first signs of wrinkles but she still scrubbed up well when dressed up like she was today with her long red hair curled down to her shoulders.

"I met your mother too Lee, she's a lovely woman" Irene grinned.

"She's an amazing woman" Lee agreed. Linda had raised Lee on her own since he was fifteen, when her husband left them. Lee still hadn't seen him since but he didn't really want to either.

After around half an hour of more mingling with various family members and work colleagues, The Dawson's finally met Lee's mother.

"Oh what a beautiful pair you two make!" She squealed, still fighting back the tears.

"Hey mom" Lee sighed as he hugged her.

"I knew you two were meant to be from the moment I met you, Carly" Linda told her.

"I'm glad somebody did" Carly laughed. "But we made it in the end"

"And I'm glad you did! God knows Lee tried his hardest to ruin things!" Linda softly hit her son.

"Thanks for reminding me" He laughed. He was glad that he could laugh about it now, but he really had almost totally ruined things with him and Carly. He did almost ruin her career after all . . .

They finished talking to everyone and had a few more dances, thankfully much more relaxed ones compared to the first, and posed for a few more pictures including one where they both posed with a bottle of beer. It had started out as a joke as they figured it would be funny to see people in such formal clothing with such a casual drink, but it had ended up on their wedding to do list.

"You guys are so weird" Carly's sister Kira told them after the picture was taken.

Kira looked similar to Carly, with them both having similar eyes and cheekbones; however her hair was much darker than Carly's bright blonde. She had dyed it multiple times but for now she was sticking with it being light brown, similar in colour to Lee's. She was a few inches shorter than her sister too, a fact which had annoyed her for her entire life. She was two years younger than Carly and had featured as her Maid of Honour.

"That's why we work" Carly smiled to her sister before taking a swig from her bottle. Although it was their wedding day, they were spending so much time talking to people that they'd barely had any drinks, so they were definitely going to savour the ones that they had now.

"If you say so" She still hadn't grown out of her teenage attitude but she was definitely happy for her sister and her new husband.

At the end of the night, Lee and Carly retreated to the honeymoon suite before waking early to embark on their honeymoon. They had chosen to fly to Europe for a weekend in Paris and then two weeks in Germany. They would spend the first week in Berlin and the second in Munich. It had taken months to decide, with them constantly arguing over where they wanted to go. Eventually though, the Munich beer festival had made their decision for them.

They visited all the tourist hotspots and enjoyed many romantic dinners. They made love every night and every morning, sometimes in the afternoon too.

"I don't want this to end" Lee whispered to her after one particularly steamy evening.

"Me either" She smiled. "Can we just stay here forever? I'm sure we could be very useful to the German people"

"I'll ask the embassy in the morning if we can stay" Lee joked.

He wished he was serious, but he knew that this trip wasn't meant to last. They had much more important things to attend to back home after all . . .

It's finally here! What do you guys think of chapter one? Originally I had this as two chapters but figured it was best merged together. Right choice? Did it make you laugh? Did you smile? Did it make you cringe in all the right places? Let me know guys!
