A Map, A Torch, A Spirit
This chapter is kind of short, but I needed to end it somewhere, so here you go! Another chapter of NO MORE! Happy Reading!
"Turn this way." Bo mumbled from beneath the map. The rusty corridors of the tunnel they were in created a torturous atmosphere.
"Are you sure? There's a door at the end of this hallway if we keep going straight." Mike shone his flashlight at the end to reveal a strange steel door.
"I'm the one with the goddamn map, turn this way." She pushed in front of him.
"When did you become so pushy?" Mike fought, following behind her.
"When you put a gun to Em's head. You know, if you listen to someone other than yourself for once, maybe I wouldn't be so 'pushy'." She pulled her voice deep and low to mock Mike, placing the map down so it wasn't covering her face.
"I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking straight." Mike apologized.
"That's for sure." She rolled her eyes, but then turned around to face him. "Listen, I guess I can try and be more patient with you. I'll act like I never even saw what happened ten minutes ago, and we can start over, but you gotta start thinking, buddy, alright?"
He nodded his head. "Yes, ma'am. I'll lead the way then." As Bo let him proceed, she continued to look at the map. "Hey, another door." Mike opened it but it seemed to groan in the process. Both Bo and Mike stopped and stayed silent to hear for any movement. When nothing was heard, they continued on. "So, you're really forgiving Josh after what he did to you?" He started conversation.
"I guess so. I know he tried everything in his power to keep me from harm, it just didn't turn out how he wanted it to. Besides, for better or worse, right?" She answered, shrugging her shoulders. "Turn right again." She directed him as he followed her instructions.
"That's pretty noble of you. You're very forgiving, it seems." Mike admitted.
"Well, my dad is- never mind." Bo went to say, but stopped herself.
"Your dad is what? A drunk? In jail?" Mike tried to finish for her.
"No, no, not at all." Bo furrowed her eyebrows together and shook her head. "He's a pastor." She decided to just let it loose and say it, and it actually felt good, to let go of the secret she thought was so awful.
"Oh, so you're like religious and shit."
"And shit, yeah." She rolled her eyes. "Up these stairs. Yeah, I was pretty much raised to forgive and treat others the way you want to be treated. I guess if I made an awful mistake like Josh did, I'd want you guys to forgive me. Especially if I was being carried away by a Wendigo."
They made their way up the broken stairway and into the next hallway, the noise of the pipes above them making them cautious.
"What happened?" Mike asked, they emerged into a castle looking place. Bo looked around at it, suspiciously.
"What do you mean?" She asked him again. "So this is the Sanatorium, we just gotta find the mines."
"Well, in the shed, while we were gone. What happened? If you're alright telling me, of course." He rubbed the back of his neck, sheepishly.
"Well, we were just talking when we heard a noise. Before I knew it, there was a Wendigo right in front of the two of us. I was so scared when I saw the thing, I couldn't move but I didn't realize I was right in front of Josh, protectively, you know what I mean? But Josh began to scream, so it went towards us. Suddenly, I felt myself get pushed out of the way. By Josh. He got out of his binds the minute you walked out of the room and I had no clue until I was saved by him."
They walked into another hallway that held more and more of them, all confusing Bo.
"I'm sorry, Bo. We'll find him, and grab the key and we can all get out of here. But you can't stop us from taking him in to the Police. He can't stay unpunished for what he did."
"I understand." Bo said quietly as she stared at the map.
"Huh, where are the wolves?" Mike whispered.
"Wolves?" Bo said, meekly.
"Yeah, they're tame." He clarified. Bo felt herself settle down as she looked into the cage where he was. "We need to find a way in. There's guns in there that we need. You know how to work a gun, P.K?"
"Ha, never heard that name before, and yes, I know how to work a gun." She rolled her eyes.
"I'm pretty sure there's a hole up there in the walkway up there if I'm seeing correctly."
"Might as well try." Bo shrugged her shoulders and quickly jogged up the stairs and to the edge of the balcony where, in fact, there was a giant hole leading inside the cage. She jumped down, landing properly on her feet. "Hold on, I'll open this door for you." She twisted the knob on her side, allowing Mike entry.
"There's a shot gun and a torch. You want the torch?" He asked Bo, who agenda-lessly walked around the small enclosure.
"Why, because girls can't handle shot guns?" Bo challenged.
"No, because you have the map." Mike snorted, knocking sense in Bo.
"Oh, then yes, I do want the torch." She took the cloth-wrapped stick in her hands, the map in the other and watched as he took out lighter from his pocket, engulfing the cloth in flames. "Thanks, Mike. For doing this with me."
"Well, Chris is kind of a pussy, so." He smirked at Bo, who smiled brightly in response nodding her head in agreement. As they exited the small room, Bo noticed a cigar box with one cigar left in it and put it in her mouth.
"Say, this place is a little tacky, say. Looks like my great Aunt Linda's casket, say. I'd at least put up more privacy curtains, nyeaheheheheh." She put on an accent and as she spoke, the cigar moved up and down from the corner of her mouth. Mike shook his head and laughed.
"Josh is lucky to have you." He rolled his eyes.
"Say, you bet your ass he is." Bo continued her impression of no one in particular before putting it down again, and following to where the exit to the other tunnel that lead to the mines.
"Ha. Right." Mike grunted, pulling out his new gun to try out on the lock. With a loud bang, the lock was broken and the door was pushed open. The two tried to stick together and watched as a wolf suddenly appeared, scaring Mike and Bo. "Easy, now, easy." Mike whispered gently, as the wolf ran away again, leaving the two by themselves.
Walking through a fenced in trail, they began the small talk they were so used to now in order to keep down their nerves.
"So, how do you know so much about the Wendigo? You weren't there when the flamethrower guy talked about it." Mike asked.
"I wish I could say I knew." Bo shrugged, her eyes glued on the map, trying to construct every picture in her mind according to the old piece of paper.
"Oh. Chris told me you killed one while you were in the shed. How did you do that?" He turned his head slightly, looking at Bo through his peripheral vision.
"I don't remember how I did it. All I remember is Josh being dragged away and then Chris was waking me up." It was unsettling for her to even remember that she had no recollection of the time she killed the Wendigo. All she remembered was that she did, like something inside her whispering little bits of where to go and what to do and how to do it. It was also unsettling that her and Mike were completely exposed to the outside, and tried to cover her fear into her map, seeming brave and confident on the outside.
Making into the other building was the longest thing Bo had ever done, even that short amount of total exposure was purely terrifying. There was a whole different building on the other side of the Sanatorium all boarded up with fencing around the edges, like chains keeping it's prey inside. Hopefully not the Wendigo. Bo feared they could tear through that enclosure like wrapping paper. Walking through different walkways, Bo leaded him from the back telling him which doors to go through as they continued to whisper to each other, always letting them know that they were still there and responsive.
"Oh," Mike let out as they walked down a set of small stairs. Hanging from on of the jail cells was one of the wolves completely torn apart from the inside. The smell of the rotting flesh made Bo want to throw up more, but her previous endulgants allowed nothing more to resurface.
They exited more and more rooms and hallways, guided by Bo's map and torch. She felt her eyelids droop slightly but suddenly shot back up when she noticed movement on the outside, crawling up one of the walls.
"Mike, be cautious but don't freak out. I totally just saw movement out there. Just an FYI." She decided to speak up about, warning Mike. He looked back at her, thankful and cocked his gun back. They walked through more rooms and entries when they both heard that very same blood-curdling screech that made goosebumps form on the back of Bo's neck.
"What the fu-"
"Language, Mike. You're in front of a P.K." Bo teased. She instantly recognized the movement's place though, and stopped her joy when she realized how near they were to it.
For Josh. For Josh. For Josh.
She reminded herself, keeping her breathing low and controlled, trying not to get the best of herself. As they entered, something moved inside a box, making Bo and Mike alert and ready, as he aimed his new toy at the thing. Bo's breath hitched in the back of her throat as she looked over to see the Wendigo staring at them. She made no movement, but Mike ruined it when he turned to look at what she was. It screeched before jumping at them, Mike shooting his gun making it flip away a few feet. Running through to the other side, Bo and Mike barely escaped, the Wendigo regaining it's composure shortly after being shot.
As they made the decision to keep going straight, they worked together to shut a sliding door with bars through it, making it harder for the Wendigo to get through. One appeared, screeching at the sight of the two. Mike shot it again, making it fly further than the previous one had, landing on it's head.
Both knowing that it wasn't over yet, they continued on, more cautious than before.
"No!" Bo whisper-yelled as her flame went out on her torch. "No, no." She sighed, as they heard the continuous cries of the blood thirsty creatures. In almost total darkness, everything became even creepier and menacing and the urgency to find Josh and get out of this entire woods became greater.
Leaving the very same safe haven they were in, Mike reloaded his gun, getting ready for more monsters. A scrambling Wendigo appeared, screaming in it's never-ending agony. It climbed the walls and the ceilings as if it were taunting them to kill it, then jumped in their direction, Mike making it fly with his shot gun. Before they could run around it, it jumped back at them with him shooting a direct hit in the head making it fly farther. Running to the left, he closed the door behind him, Bo panting from behind him. Helping him block the entry, they both grabbed the filing cabinet and pushed it in front of the steel door.
Running through to the other room as more screeches were heard, Mike locked the next door, the never-ending maze of doors and hallways making Bo dizzy. As they looked around the room, they noticed a desk and hid behind it, another Wendigo appearing and looking around.
"Stay still." Bo ordered Mike, taking her own advice. Timing their movements perfectly, they were able to escape, Mike taking guard of every corner and room they enter with his small fancy gun and machete. The two of them jerking in every direction, completely paranoid, they walked slowly and carefully through each obstacle.
They were literally walking through a maze of caged Wendigos squealing and snarling and scratching around every corner. Mike used several shots on the creatures that grabbed a hold of Bo's leg, Mike's arm, and her hair, mutually deciding just to scramble together in the middle.
"I seriously hope all of this is worth it and Josh has the key." Mike snapped, shooting another Wendigo.
"It will." Bo promised. An escaped monster began to chase them as they ran full speed through the hallway, easily dodging the arms and legs flying out in the cracks of their cage. Mike shot it as they reached the end of the hallway and as it fell, Bo took the time to tip a barrel over, another Wendigo appearing. She rolled it at them, the two mesmorized by it's movement.
"Shoot it, Mike." She began to push the door, the two monsters no longer in a trance. As she got the door open, he took his chance and shot the barrel, creating an explosion, killing the Wendigos and setting everything aflame, Bo grabbing and pulling him into another room before his eyebrows were singed off.
"You alright?" He asked her, as he wiped the dirt off his jeans.
"I should be asking you that question." She teased, leading the way through more corridors. Thankfully, the screaming became more distant the farther they got but something told her the safety they felt was not to be lived long.
And she was right. They both turned around at the near sound of screeching and found another monster behind them. As they ran, Mike shot the lock that lead to the next door, throwing it open and quickly shutting it behind him. He was sure that by the end of this rescue, he would have open and slammed shut thirty different doors. They ran to a hole and jumped through, Bo landing gracefully and Mike not so much. She raced forward, as he took one last glance up before following. Racing up a steel staircase, he passed what seemed like a boiler room only ten times the size of the Washington's cabin's.
Bo slammed herself into the two doors as Wendigo's surrounded them.
"Shoot it!" Bo screamed at Mike, who seemed to be frozen but quickly responded with a bang as she continued to slam her shoulder through the door. More screamed as she barely got the door open, Mike choosing to shoot a barrel, creating a huge explosion that knocked them out into the snow to keep from burning alive. The screams of singed Wendigo's haunted Bo as she wiped the snow off her face and bare legs.
The two of them exited the Sanatorium alive, for the moment and thankful that the two of them had made a bad ass pair, they walked together into the woods.
