Happy reading!
"I don't see why I can't carry Bo, she's my girlfriend." Josh argued while being hauled off, his hands chained behind his back. The cold air of the forest bit at their exposed skin, as Mike, Chris, and Bo escorted Josh to who-knows-where.
"Shut up." Mike spat, shoving Josh forward.
"You're dangerous, Josh. And you aren't going to hurt anyone anymore than you have." Chris adjusted Bo in his arms, wrapped around his neck and her face in his chest. She stirred as he did so, making his breath hitch in his throat.
"Josh?" She hummed quietly.
"No, it's Chris. Is that alright?" He gave her a cheeky smile.
"Yeah." She said, her voice sounding better than before, and laughed which again turned into a cough. Josh turned his head slightly at the sound of her voice, but quickly looked back, his head dropping to look down at his feet. The forest was eerily quiet as only the sound of their footprints crunching in the snow was present.
"Where are you guys taking me?" Josh whispered, a small hint of fear in his tone.
"We're gonna lock you up." Mike answered for Chris, who had his hands full, literally. "So you can't do anything stupid before we call the police in the morning."
"We're calling the police?" Bo asked Chris, meekly.
"We have to, look at what he did to you- to us." He explained, keeping his voice down so only she could hear him.
"I did this to myself, Chris." She closed her eyes again, the headache growing stronger in pulses. Sometimes it would go away, sometimes it would come back.
"We've got other things to worry about first, though. We gotta get you to a hospital, Bowie." He admitted, looking back up into his path behind Mike then at her.
"I don't see why I gotta go to the police, I didn't do anything unlawful." Josh tried.
"Anything unlawful?" Mike exclaimed, angrily, "Is he fucking serious? You murdered Jessica!"
"I didn't murder her, I had nothing to do with her." Josh looked between Mike and Chris, trying to persuade them to believe him.
"You know what, man? You just can't keep talking, you just need to shut up." Chris dismissed him, walking past him with Bo, making Josh quiet.
"Chris, I thought we were partners. Friends, man." Josh stressed, quietly, watching him leave with his girlfriend.
"That was before you knocked us out, strapped Bo to a plank and made us watch you die, afterwards scaring the shit out of all of us with kidnapping Sam and making us walk through poltergiest hell. Did that cover it all?" Chris gradually yelled at Josh, making Bo move her head away from him.
"Yeah, just about." Josh nodded his head, turning away from him. Nearing the shed, Bo suddenly gasped when she saw where they were taking him.
"No, Chris, no, no, no, no." She suddenly began to freak out, shaking her head vigorously.
"No, Bo, we're not taking him there, we're walking past there." Chris assured her, trying to calm Bo down. She nodded her head, slowly, resting it back on his chest.
"You guys aren't listening to me, you only see what you wanna see!" Josh reiterated, only irritating Mike more.
"Stop talking!" He shouted, grabbing Josh's head and throwing him to the ground, face down, and jumping onto his back.
"Dude," Chris set Bo down on an old bench.
"It's not my fault you suckers can't take a joke." Josh wailed as he lifted his head from the ground, straining his chest out. Mike held the gun out to his head,
"Oh, oh wait, did I hurt you?" Mike mockingly spoke gently to him, still holding the gun. Bo tried to regain her brain after being set down so fast, holding her hand to her head. "Did you just feel a little bit of pain? I am so, so sorry."
Josh yelled out, crying in pain. "Stop it!"
"Jesus, dude." Chris whispered.
"Stop!" Bo shouted, finally aware that Mike had a gun to the back of his head as was twisting Josh's arm out of its socket. "Don't stoop to his level, Mike. Lord Jesus." At the sound of her voice fixing itself and the sudden power she contained, she shocked Mike, as he pulled Josh up from the ground.
"Michael, I'm sorry, man." Josh shook his head, genuinely. "I can't tell you how sorry I am that something happened to Jessica, but I swear, I swear to you, I have no idea what happened to her."
Something inside Chris made him feel like he could believe him, but after everything he did, his logical side knew it was impossible.
"Josh, come on, do you really expect us to trust you?" Chris held his arms out, "Even for a single goddamned second after what you put us all through."
"Bo believes me," He opined, finally making eye contact with her, who raised her head at the mention of her name, "You believe me, Bo, right?" She couldn't bring herself to answer. "I know how much Jessica means to you, Bo." Her head tilted slightly.
"Oh yeah? Then you should know how much Ashley means to me, how much Chris means to me? Or Sam, what about her? You should know how much you mean to me, but that didn't stop you from doing what you just had to, you confused son of a bitch." Bo seethed, looking away from him. Josh nodded his head slowly, sad that Bo had not chose to save him, but understanding that he had crossed the line greatly.
Mike pushed him forward, the shamed Josh pulled farther and farther away from his redemption.
"You guys are cowards, afraid to see the parts of you that you put away that night. You all pretended like it never happened until today, while some of us were suffering the loss of Hannah and Beth." Josh insulted.
"You are the coward." Chris jabbing his finger at Josh's chest, "You manipulated us, you tricked us, you hurt your friends, and the girl you so love, and all while you hid in the shadows."
Mike nodded in agreement.
All in the midst of the chaos they forgot Bo on the bench, hardly able to move. She got up, the wind howling in her ears, and limped slowly towards the voices she heard in the other shed. Bo caught sight of Mike pushing Josh into the building, Chris standing watch outside. She watched as Mike and Chris struggled to tie Josh around the pole in the middle of the shed. Deciding she had enough, she hobbled as fast as she could to meet up with Chris and Mike, who stepped away from him and were talking amongst the two of them.
"I've never seen him like this." Chris whispered, shaking his head. "It's like...It's like he's possessed."
Bo heard Josh rambling about plastic ties and hostages and felt sick to the stomach when he looked up at her, suddenly silent and ashamed if only for a moment before starting back up again when the two boys in charge turned their attention back to Josh, the single light illuminating the insanity inside him.
"Everybody is stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid," He began to chant, Bo and Chris exchanging worried glances, as the look in Josh's eye was almost inhuman. "Chris and Ash, Chris is an ass,"
"I thought we talked about you quitting poetry." Bo mumbled, crossing her arms across her chest, feeling her legs shiver in the cold.
"Ashley's a dumb dumb." Josh taunted, his head turning like he heard his favorite song.
"I'm sorry, what did you just say?" Chris got in his face, jabbing again with his pointer finger.
"Well, I said you were a dummy, dummy," Josh clarified for him.
"What is wrong with you?" Bo furrowed her eyebrows as if he were a patient giving her a confusing testimony.
'"Oh...Ashley, I never imagined in my wildest dreams that you like me!'" He mocked Chris, practically making him red in the face.
"Stop." Chris turned his head to look over at Bo, who was still narrowing her eyes at Josh, observing him for any sign of what was inside him, remembering Chris's statement that he was acting possessed.
"Oh, what is that noise?" He pretended like he was searching for something, "You know what that sound is? That's the sound of you never kissing Ashley, you pussy."
"Stop!" Chris shouted, shaking his head.
"Yeah, you know? You might as well let Ashley sleep with Mike. I mean, at least he's got some notches in his belt, you know? At least he'll treat her right!" He continued to taunt him.
"What do you know about treating girls right, look at what you did to your girl!?" Chris pushed Josh against the post again and began to pace the room, making Bo look away, her breathing rising through the roof as she tried to contain her tears.
"I couldn't stop what happened, and I tried so hard too, you know that Chris. But you know what, I had the guts to ask her out in the first place, it only took me a year! You're fucking pathetic, Christopher!"
As Josh laughed, Chris quickly grabbed hold of a spare piece of wood and wielded it over his head. Bo gasped as he watched him, ready to bring it down on Josh.
She ran as fast as she could in between Josh and Chris, and placed her hands in front of both, one in front of each.
"STOP!" She shouted, her voice louder than anything, as the room grew silent. "Stop this! You're doing no good! Jessica is out there, and we aren't getting anything from Josh, he's a fucking psycho right now, and may I bring up that we haven't heard from Matt and Emily in almost an hour!? Knock this shit off so we can actually do something that makes a difference!"
Chris slowly brought down his weapon as Josh smirked.
"Thank you, baby, took you long eno-" He was interrupted by a punch to the nose, reopening whatever flow Mike had before Bo had. "Fuck!"
"You two should leave." Bo suggested.
"But you're sick!" Chris argued. She shrugged her shoulders.
"I feel fine to me. Besides, Sam and Ashley need to know whats going on and I need a moment alone with Josh."
"Don't leave me with her! She'll beat me again!"
"If you don't shut your mouth and let me do the talking, I will, you ass." Bo took a hold of Chris's wooden weapon, weaving it in front of his face.
"Again with the name calling..." Josh mumbled.
"Again with the talking, chicken shit."
Mike laughed lightly, giving Bo a smile and patting Chris on the shoulder.
"I think she's got a handle here. You have five minutes before we come back and help you out, Ms. Tracy."
Bo watched with her weapon dangling from her two fingertips, making Josh slightly scared, as Chris and Mike walked away, leaving only the two of them. It took her a while to turn around and face him, knowing that he was not well. Taking deep breaths she finally scrounged up her bravery and threw the wooden weapon to the ground.
"You-You're not gonna beat me with it? Are you gonna go skins?" Josh babbled, as she turned around. She went to laugh but only went into a coughing fit. "Woah! Are you alright?"
"Don't act like you care, Josh." She spat, giving him a look. He shook his head.
"I'm not okay, Bo."
"Oh really? I couldn't tell." She sat down next to him on the ground. "Oh, Josh, why are you like this? Why did this even have to happen?"
"Because I needed to avenge my sisters!"
"Or was it because I wasn't enough." Bo countered.
"What? Of course you were enough, you are more than enough, Bo, that's why I can't lose you." Josh looked down at her from his stool to where she was sitting on the concrete floor.
"How long have you been planing this?" She ignored his statement beforehand, playing with her fingers.
"What?"
"How long...how long have you been planning all of this?" Bo said, more agressive.
"That doesn't matter to me, right now what matters to me is making things right with you." Josh insisted.
"What about the others?" She asked, looking up at him.
"I'm not totally in love with the others, now am I?" He smirked, as she rolled her eyes. "When I say that I mean it."
"You have a weird way of showing it."
"Bo Anne Tracy, I can't begin to explain my love for you in words and how deeply sorry I am that I hurt you. I realize my mistake, I realize it was a really fucking big one, but I-" Josh tried to amend things but was interrupted by an inhuman screech.
"What the heck is that?" Bo whispered, standing up next to Josh.
"Doesn't sound good." Josh admitted, leaning forward in his seat slightly, the stool creaking. She was able to make out trees rustling and the sound of the screech again.
"Oh, Jesus, there's something out there!"
knock, knock, knock, knock
Sam, Ashley, Mike, Chris and Em all grew silent inside the lodge as they heard a strange pounding on the door, an urgent knock.
"Who the fuck can that be?" Mike spat, slightly turning his head to the side to talk with Chris.
"Josh?" Sam suggested.
"Bo?" Ashley pointed out.
"Jess?" Chris piped in.
Mike shook his head, "It's not Jess."
"Sorry man, but who is it?"
"I don't know, we should check it out." He put in, slightly hoping Chris would step up and take charge. All he received was a poke in the shoulder.
"I got your back." Chris whispered. Mike rolled his eyes, lightly.
"Good." He answered. The two of them walked to the back door, Mike with a gun in his hands in case the worst happens.
"I'm going to open the door, cover me." Chris demanded, seeing the silhouette of a man outside the door.
"Uh huh." Mike nodded his head, cocking the gun back. Chris took a deep breath and tried to force himself to move when his friend interrupted him, "Just do it already, whoever it is is probably gone by now."
"I'm sorry, normally Bo is here to-"
"Well, she's probably outside. Get the door." Mike whisper-yelled, nodding his head towards it once with a jab. Once Chris turned the knob slightly, the door was kicked open, throwing Chris backwards, revealing a rough-looking man with a huge flamethrower.
"Not Bo! Not Bo! Not Bo!" Chris wailed from the ground, quickly getting up.
"Ah-ho, hold on there." Mike warned the man, his hand stretched out like he was steadying a horse instead of a bigger man with a 10x larger gun. "Hold on there, mister." Mike took several tiny steps back as Chris held out his hands next to him.
Suddenly the man twisted the tiny pistol from Mike's hands, hurting him in the process and making him quietly cry out in pain.
"Alright, alright! Just-" The two of them took larger steps away with their hands in the air, "take it easy, Grandpa."
"I don't think calling him 'Grandpa' will make him not wanna kill us." Chris chided from beside him.
The man finally spoke, his voice almost sounding as hoarse as Bo's was before she went all bad-ass. "I'm not hear to kill you, everybody just calm down and move over there. Listen to what I have to say." He ordered. Mike and Chris quickly did what they were told, scrambling to move and keep an eye on the ruggedy man. Leading them into the group, they calmed down their friends, as the man began to say what he came to.
"I'm here to tell you what you're up against, being back on this mountain." He rounded the group into a huge circle, cradling them like cattle. "You should have never returned."
"Well, we kinda got that memo-" Emily rolled her eyes.
"Quiet!" The man yelled at her. "I don't know why you did after what happened last year."
"You mean with Hannah and Beth?" Ashley interrupted.
"I don't know how he would know about them." Chris said. "Without being involved."
"Or responsible." Sam accused him, standing up with fury.
"Now you hold onto you horses. I don't take kindly to you kids coming up here to my mountain-"
"Your mountain? I'm sure the Washingtons would be very surprised to hear that." Mike tilted his head slightly, in sarcasm. The man only laughed.
"This mountain don't belong to me, that's true. But it sure as hell don't belong to the Washingtons." He paced the floor, "This mountain belongs to the Wendigo."
"Who?" Chris furrowed his eyebrows.
"What's he talking about?" Sam whispered to Ashley who shrugged her shoulders in response.
"The hell is a Wendigo?" Mike asked the man, his arms crossed over his chest.
"Now I'm only going to tell you this once, it doesn't matter if you believe it or not. I got reasons I want to," He paused looking into the fire for a second, "Get it off my chest."
"See?" Mike turned to the group, "I told you guilty as shit, guilty of something."
"Shut up, Mike." Sam scolded.
"There is a curse that dwells in these mountains." He looked back at the group, "Should any man or woman resort to cannibalism in these woods, the spirit of the Wendigo will be unleashed."
"Oh crap." Mike whispered.
"What?" Sam probed but he only remained quiet. Somehow, Mike knew to believe the man. With everything he saw that night, he'd be a fool not to.
"You're going to need to find somewhere safe."
"The basement might be okay." Sam offered.
"Get in there, all of you, and wait." The stranger confirmed the idea, nodding his head towards the door to the basement.
"Why? For how long?" Sam furrowed her eyebrows.
"Until Dawn." Emily said as it clicked in her brain.
"Guys." Mike said, seeing the panic in his eyes. "Bo. We left her alone with Josh."
Chris met eye contact with Mike, his containing the same kind of fear. "Oh my God."
"Where did you leave them?" The stranger asked.
"In the shed." Mike answered.
"Oh my God!" Ashley wailed, "Are they okay?"
"Your friends will already be dead." He answered. The whole group went silent for a moment, no of them with anything to say.
"No." Chris denied standing up. "No, they can't be. We were just with them."
"A lot can happen quickly on this mountain." The stranger shook his head.
"No." Chris shook his head again. "I'm going to go find her."
"You can't go out there, Chris!" Ashley tried to stop him.
"Are you fucking with me? Bo's out there. Bo Tracy, the most innocent person here, is out there, by herself with that maniac and a cannibalistic monster!"
"But what about you Chris, then it will be Bo, Josh and yourself out there with a monster." Ashley argued.
"And I suppose you all don't want me to go out there as well?" Chris looked dead on at Sam.
"We can't lose you, Chris." Sam agreed. "It's too dangerous."
"Chris, stop trying to play hero for Bo and just think for one moment of what going out there could do to you! What it could do to me." Ashley got up from her seat as well. Chris took steps away from the group, Mike left speechless.
"I can't believe you said that, Ash. I thought you were better than this. I thought you all were better than this." He walked towards the front door.
"I'm going with you." The stranger demanded.
"I don't need your help." Chris informed him, confident and angry.
"Going out there, alone, is suicide, you're going to need my help." He continued.
"Fine." Chris waited at the door.
"The rest of you get down in the basement, be safe." The stranger ordered before leaving with Chris. Ashley hung her head down low as she followed the crew, all of them did, knowing and understanding the betrayal they dished out to their dear friend, Bo.
