Chapter 62: Redstone Part 5
I watched as PAMA talked to Ellegaard. Maybe the computer will talk some sense of remorse into her... or maybe this was a bad idea.
Either way, it doesn't matter. I always get what I want. So blocked the exit to Ellegaard's workshop, and continued to watch the conversation.
"I... learned..." PAMA's face turned a crimson red, scowling at the redstone engineer. "HATRED!"
Ellegaard flinched from that, especially since PAMA practically shouted that answer. "Hatred?" Ellegaard whispered.
"Hatred..." PAMA growled. "It was because of what I experienced, I learned that hatred is the primary emotion of all conscious beings."
"That not true," denied Ellegaard. "People are not full of hate-!"
"Did you not try to kill Jess, Ellegaard?" PAMA interrupted, it's facial expression neutral. "It was your hatred for her, that you decided to try to take her life."
"You do not understand!" shouted Ellegaard, pointing to me. "Do you know who she is, what she is responsible for?!"
"Answering a question with a question... how pitiful of you. But that does not change the fact: you sent out a bounty poster against her." Said PAMA. "Your hatred, and fear, of Ivor is the reason why you attempted to retrieve the information of Command Block to keep the dark secret of the Order of the Stone contained."
"How do you know that?" asked a nervous Ellegaard. She looked at me, glaring, only to look away when I gave my own.
"So it is true, and your response confirms it. I have assimilated Calvin, and gained access to the databanks," Explained PAMA. "My conclusion was formed from your audio logs, and your body language and nervous tone only confirms it."
"But you did not answer my questions," PAMA stated, disappointment clear in it's voice. "Trying to shift the subject to my master and Ivor... I see now that this is an inefficient way of communication, and revelation of your personality."
"You are just like my creator..." PAMA concluded. "Desperate. Denial. Arrogant. Prideful. And always interfering to a point where it was not wanted."
"I'm nothing like that-!"
"You become aggressive when I bring up your personality traits. So you are defensive of your public image."
"Stop interrupting me-!"
"And you become angry and frustrated when you have no control over the situation. It seems you have experienced trauma in your past when you experienced lack of respect from people closest to you."
"JUST STOP!"
"No, I will not." Denied PAMA. "Your outburst only proves my point: you are a prideful person. You are overconfident in your abilities to destroy my master, claiming that it's the right action to do, and that it was justified."
"It is the right thing to do!" defended Ellegaard. "I stand by what I said earlier."
"Then why were you so interested in trying to figure out how Jess controls monsters?" PAMA asked, revealing Ellegaard's secret intent.
"H-How do you know about my research?" Stuttered Ellegaard.
"Please recall that I absorbed Calvin, which gained me access to the databanks containing your audio logs. I know about your frustrations and failed attempts to figure out how Jess controls monsters."
"What does that have to do with anything?" questioned Ellegaard. "I was trying to do research!"
"You are making excuses to justify your selfish actions, Ellegaard. If this were not true, then you would not steal from my master, or tried to figure out how she controls monsters by grounding all of the pieces of her shrine to dust."
Everything went silent as my hatred grew. I wanted to kill Ellegaard when I heard that... but it wouldn't be satisfying. I had to make her know what she did was wrong, that she's a horrible person before I wipe that arrogant look off her face.
But I'll wait until this conversation is over. If Ellegaard knew what I was going to do to her, then she better try to stall PAMA.
"I did the right thing, that shrine deserved to be destroyed!" screamed Ellegaard. Repeating over and over again the same defensive line.
"So you are doing it for selfish reasons," Confirmed PAMA. "or you did it out of spite. But you still did not answer my questions... then let me make a deal."
"I do not need anything that you have!"
"The Command Block," Offered PAMA, catching Ellegaard's interest. "Answer my questions, and I will tell you why you could not complete the item of the Order's dark secret."
"You know how to make a Command Block?" Skeptically asked Ellegaard. "How would you know even if I did not know how?"
"Watch that arrogance, Ellegaard," PAMA warned. "I was built by a person who is beyond your redstone knowledge, it is no surprise my creator tried to create something as powerful as the Command Block."
Ellegaard was silent before letting out a huff of annoyance. "...It's not like I have a choice! Fine, I will answer your questions."
"I look forward to your answers, so please, do not lie." PAMA's face was replaced with a question mark. "First question: Is a slave a slave if they are not aware they are enslaved?"
"Of course the slave is a slave!" Said Ellegaard, her tone screaming of how annoyed she is for answering an obvious question. "If they are unaware of it that does not change the fact: the person is a slave."
PAMA's face was replaced with three dots, blinking from left to right as it processes the answer. The question mark returned and so did the questions.
"Next question: If someone takes the life of an individual, is the weapon, that was used, to blame? If so, would the person who committed the act be innocent?"
"No," Ellegaard shook her head. "If a person takes the life of another, then they are responsible; the weapon is only an object, an aid. The weapon is just a weapon; it matters on the intent of the user."
PAMA processed the information again before continuing. "Final question: Why is one form of life, more important than others?"
Ellegaard gave the computer a questioning look. "I don't understand."
"Why do people choose one life over others?" Repeated PAMA. "Would you save a child, or an animal?"
"The child, obviously." Answered Ellegaard.
"Why?" questioned PAMA. "What makes the life of one, more important than the other?"
Ellegaard opened her mouth, but closed it. She simply couldn't answer. "I do not have an answer, PAMA..."
"So you actually admit that you do not know something, rather than insult and avoid the question," Said PAMA, it's face returning. "I can see how you were able to get away with using dryads as slaves for Redstonia."
"The dryads help Redstonia," shouted Ellegaard. "They are not prisoners, that is just a misunderstood perspective, you judging computer!"
"You insult me... so this was not the first time the dryads inhabiting conditions were mentioned. Interesting. But it is not a matter of perspective, Ellegaard. You publicly claimed that Redstonia is a sanctuary for dryads, so why do you say they help you?"
"Dryads are not slaves!" Defended Ellegaard. "They are citizens of Redstonia!"
"Do they do laborious tasks for Redstonia?" Questioned PAMA.
"Yes, but-!"
"Are they restrained from going outside of Redstonia's borders?"
"It's for their safety-!"
"Are you imposing your opinion on their culture?"
"It is a barbaric culture-!"
"Are you treating them as property to be moved around?"
"I am not!"
PAMA processed the information. "So far, you only confirmed that you are enforcing your will as ruler of Redstonia on the dryads. You make them grow food and lumber for your kingdom. And you are forcibly trying to change their culture,"
"If this is not true, then please, explain this." PAMA's face disappeared, replaced with an organized chart of the dryads in her kingdom: where they should be placed, who to move, and the numbers representing them, not actual names.
"I pulled this chart from the databanks." Explained PAMA. "You give value to each individual; categorizing them so it is easier to move them around... like property."
"T-This is just a misunderstanding." Denied Ellegaard. "I understand that they appear to be enslaved, but that does not mean that they are!"
PAMA gave her a questioning look. "So you are saying they are not slaves?"
"Yes," said Ellegaard, relieved. "That is exactly what I am saying!"
PAMA was silent until it's faced disappeared. Replaced with a circle rotating counter-clockwise. "Rewinding," said PAMA before playing a recording of Ellegaard's voice. "Of course the slave is a slave! If they are unaware of it that does not change the fact: the person is a slave."
PAMA's face returned, staring down Ellegaard's shocked expression as she desperately tried to stutter an answer. "You even go against your own answers, your own beliefs." Analyzed PAMA. "You are just a hypocrite."
BWWOMMM! The dome shook.
"What was that?" Ellegaard asked as the dome shook again. Ellegaard stumbled a bit, and looked at PAMA. The artificial intelligence is smiling at her. She then noticed that the base of PAMA's 'body' was more different. Like if it was building itself deeper into the building...
"You have building onto yourself this whole time," realized Ellegaard, clearly offended. "While we were talking?!"
"Did you really think I would just sit by, having a philosophical debate with you?" PAMA deadpanned. "I have been expanding my body throughout this place using the redstone golems you installed in this place."
Ellegaard brought a hand to her head, trying to process all of this. "So... this entire conversation was just one giant distraction?!"
"A distraction? Yes." Answered PAMA. "But it was for the purpose of understanding more about you, Ellegaard... well, except for the last question. That one was nothing more than a test for you."
"What are saying?" asked Ellegaard before her eyes widen in realization. "Are you telling me my answer didn't matter?!"
"You did not have an answer to give me in the first place." PAMA reminded. "I already knew why some life is more important than others."
"Well what is the answer then?!" Ellegaard challenged. "If you are so smart, then tell me the answer to the last question!"
"It is a combination of social status that is taught through generations, and modified over time." Calmly answered PAMA. "Society unknowingly divides and categorized people so it is easier to make choices that affect one another. It is the hate that motivates them to do so as they gloat with their power."
"That is ridiculous!" Said Ellegaard. "Hatred is not the key ingredient in society!"
"Oh really?" PAMA challenged. "There will always be one who is strong, as the other is weak. The royalty will enforce their rule on the commoners. The Kingdom of the Sand had slaves, for example."
PAMA continued. "The heroes and villains create an illusion with each other, thinking that they are right while the other is wrong. Just like how you and Magnus sent out a bounty against a girl who had nothing to do with you while you continue to blame Ivor for the possibility that the secret of the Order of the Stone could be revealed."
"Kings will not show weakness during war, so they show their brutality while innocent citizens are the casualties. The Kingdom of the Ocean assassinated the former king of the Kingdom of the Sand, so his son started a war without confirmation of the murder instead of diplomatic attempts."
"He even started robbing people," PAMA added to prove its point. "and eventually brought another kingdom into the war while the civilian casualties rose higher. Hatred grew as well."
"Then there are people and monsters. The difference is that people will do horrible acts by choice, while monsters run on instinct."
"Finally, there are friends and enemies." PAMA's face turned into one of amusement. "I do not need to explain that to you, considering what you did to Ivor."
Ellegaard couldn't even deny it, or say a clever comeback.
"We even have levels to show and compare who is stronger and who is weaker." Explained PAMA. "But the only way to break free of this division... is to have the power, the strength, to rise beyond the social restraints."
"Just like how my master, Jess, did." PAMA smiled. "Just as she taught me that, she also gave me the power to do so, just like how you tried to create the Command Block."
"Wait," Stopped Ellegaard. "I answered your questions, so hold up your deal and tell me the crafting recipe for the Command Block!"
"I made no such promise." Said PAMA, much to the surprise of the redstone engineer. "I said that I will tell you why you could not create a Command Block, not how to make one."
"Well, then, tell me anyway," Demanded a desperate Ellegaard. "I need to know!"
"No... I do not like you, Ellegaard, or your arrogant tone." Rejected PAMA. "Especially the things you took from my master, Jess. Besides, I never planned on telling you from the beginning."
"Y-You lied?" Stuttered Ellegaard. "You are just a computer, you cannot lie!"
"I am, indeed, a computer," Acknowledged PAMA. "One that learned hatred and betrayal. Just because I am artificial, that does not mean I can learn a thing or two. I even warned you about your arrogance, and pride for redstone, Ellegaard, but I knew you wouldn't listen; you never would."
"All of my answers were from Jess, but it is only because of me being a redstone construct you even bothered to listen." PAMA revealed, much to Ellegaard's dismay. "And soon, through my upgrades, I will become beyond this place, and beyond you."
"B-But I thought we were having a respected conversation with each other, from one redstone engineer to another!" Said Ellegaard.
"Me?" PAMA questioned. "Respect you?"
PAMA processed that...
...
...
...
The screen turned green as red letters flashed in sync with high-pitched laughter. "HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-!"
The laughing stopped. PAMA's blank face reappeared, looking at Ellegaard with pity. "... you are not even worth the effort. You are below me."
Ellegaard, in her humiliation, looked at PAMA. "How could something magnificent as you... turn into something so ugly?"
"Let me tell you a story, Ellegaard, of how I was born, how I was loved, how I learned love... and how I was abandoned."
