Chapter 5: Birthdays

Jess walked out of her room, into the single hallway that leads to the main area of the temple. The same temple where Ivor helped her, nurtured her, and helped her grow.

The large, main room of the temple now has a new entrance. It is multiple sets of iron doors, one in front of the other. There are hidden dispensers that shoot tipped arrows, and redstone lamps that are connected to tripwires on the front steps of the temple. When someone gets close, they will be alert and ready.

The interior has changed drastically. Everything inside was cleared out, basically turning the temple into an empty building. Then all missing block were replaced with stone bricks. There are four new large rooms built into the temple: Food, Potion Ingredients, Materials, and Armory.

Jess and Ivor built their own rooms, a 10x10x10 hollow cube that was built upstairs on the left and right sides of the temple. Jess took the left one while Ivor took the right. Both cubes are connected to a single tunnel that connects to the temple, then to a ladder that reaches all the way down to the main area.

It was actually Ivor who did most of the work, considering he uses Potions of Speed practically everyday.

The main area itself was like a training room. Ivor would do his hazardous alchemy experiments on one side. Jess trains, studies, and other things on the other. Always ready to help each other out.

Jess climbed down the ladder, into the main area. When she did, she walked up to her friend Ivor who was studying the book Famine at him potion stations. Dozens of glass bottles, filled with chemicals, were scattered around.

"Hey Ivor." Jess called out.

[Ivor]

'He really has improved in one month, already surpassing Gabriel, possibly the whole Order since I gave him Famine.' Jess thought to herself.

"Ah!" he yelled, startled, quickly hiding something in his Inventory. "Jess, you're back!" he said with a smile.

"It's done." Jess said, as Ivor gave her a nod with a sad smile.

"... So you actually went through with it?" he asked, but he already knew the answer.

"It had to be tonight as the queen was gone with the prince, on a trip to another kingdom with majority of the royal guards that escorted them on the trip." Jess explained to her friend. Her face didn't show any remorse, or any regrets.

"You shouldn't be doing things like this Jess-"

"Ivor..." She interrupted. "I've grown up when I was falling down that cliff. All the naive views were beaten out of me when I was constantly trying to survive the fall, the woods, the snow, and the wolves." She said. "Do you know what I discovered?"

Ivor shook his head, and motioned her to continue.

"People are like water drops." She said. "They are the same if you look at them from a distance, but when you take a closer look, you see what chemicals they really are. And sometimes when these chemicals come too close... things could happen." Like her being tackled off a cliff by her best friend, Reuben.

"You still hate them... don't you?" he asked.

"I hate people Ivor, but not individuals. A group of people are stupid, but a single individual is smart."

"That's a little narrow-minded and flawed, don't you think?" He asked with one eyebrow raised, fully knowing that she dodged the question.

Jess just scoffed. "The world was dumb enough to believe the Order. The slaves I freed were dumb to stay behind when they were captured and forced to mine resources. Seriously, they were given mining equipment! If I was them, I would have dug out of there, but they were stupid enough to stay."

"It's true that there are bad people Jess-" Ivor started.

"-And stupid people." Jess interrupted.

"Yes, and stupid people." Ivor said. "But there is good in the world... sadly, there isn't enough good people in the world, only liars."

"What are you getting at?" she asked.

"I'm saying, that you shouldn't see the negatives in everyone. Sure, everyone does bad things, but they do good things as well. Just don't forget that."

Jess wanted roll her eyes, but let out a sigh instead. "...Fine. So, is there anything else you need?" she said, putting her hand on her hip.

"Yes actually." Ivor said, walking up to a chest, picked up an item and tossed it to Jess. It was a potion bottle, but it was bigger, wider too, and has a spiral design etched into it.

"That Jess, is a Potion Flask. To summarize, it's a potion bottle that can contain much more liquid, so you can drink the same potion up to 10 times. That way you don't have to carry multiple potions, or use multiple bottles when brewing. You can just use this!" he gestured to the bottle in her hand.

To say that Jess was amazed was an understatement. "That's amazing! How did you make this?" she asked as she gave the Potion Flask back to Ivor.

He shrugged, but the smirk never left his face. "Most of the credit goes to Famine." He gestured to the open, red book in his hand. "She's amazing~" he said.

"Thank you Ivor~" the book replied, in its gentle, yet stern, female voice.

"Yes, yes, but actually there is something that I want to give to you." Ivor said. "Now, close your eyes."

Jess did what she was told. "Now open your eyes." Said an excited Ivor. When she did, in front of her was a chest that said 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY!' on it.

"...you got me a birthday present..." Jess said, surprised.

Ivor rubbed his head sheepishly. "Yes, well, your birthday was about a month ago, give or take a week, as you told me." Jess remembered. It was the same day she woke up alone in the tree house, the same day that her brother led her former friends to victory in the Building Competition, and the same day her former friends told her how much they hated her.

The same day a girl named Jesse died and a girl named Jess was born. So in a way, last month was Jesses' last birthday, and Jess' first...

Jess gave her friend a quick hug. "Thank you, this... really means a lot."

Ivor playfully waved her off. "Oh please. You didn't even open it yet." When she did, she was surprised. Inside is the actual Enderdragon egg! With four End Crystals included.

"Ivor is this the actual egg of the Enderdragon?!" she asked excitedly as she picked the egg up.

"Of course it is!" he said with a proud smile.

"Hold on, I thought Soren blinked the dragon out of existence with the Command Block, why do you have the egg?" she asked. Even using [Observe] to confirm that the item in her hand is indeed the actual egg of the Enderdragon.

"Nothing is created or destroyed. Only transferred and transformed. Soren simply turned the Enderdragon back into an egg."

"And the End Crystals? Aren't these the only physical evidence that you have that proves that the Order of the Stone are liars?" While Jess appreciated the gift, this just didn't feel right with her.

Ivor just waved her off. "Don't worry, those were artificially made. Not the natural ones. The key difference is that the crafted End Crystals are extremely fragile, and more explosive than TNT! So do be careful for next week."

"Next week?" she asked.

"Next week, we are going to get the real present. We're going to resurrect the Enderdragon!" he said, right in time for lightning to crackle loudly outside.

"The actual dragon?! Ivor why would you want that?!" she asked.

"Simple. We gear up, weaken the dragon enough so you can use [Creature Tamer] on it! Once you are in control, I'll be able to safely harvests its saliva and scales to create us new potions and armor!" Ivor said excitedly. "And the best part is... you get an Enderdragon!"

Jess couldn't believe what she was hearing, but it made her excited. "Lets do it!" she declared.

"Excellent! Now we need to plan. Next week is the only time we can do this. So train, do quests, and level up."

"Why next week?" she asked.

"Soren leaves the End every three months to check on his fortress, his mob grinder, items, and bring back supplies to restock so he can continue his research of endermen. That will be next week, and he spends a whole day in the Overworld before going back to the End." Said Ivor.

"But couldn't we just spawn the Enderdragon in the Overworld instead of the End, you know, with Soren being collateral damage?" Jess asked.

Ivor just shook his head. "No... I'll get my revenge, but not like that-"

"But they will be exposed as liars-!" Jess interrupted.

"And they can just make up a fake story about the Enderdragon resurrecting on its own or something! The whole world is practically eating out of their hands, so they'll believe anything they say." Stated Ivor. "And I think that the words of 'heroes' are more valuable than a alchemist that nobody knows."

"So why do we need Soren to not know about the dragon coming back?"

"Simply put, he thinks I'm wondering on my own. Trying to stay ahead of Gabriel. If he saw me doing something suspicious, especially in the End, I'll be exposed, his guard will be up, and spread the word to the Order and it will be harder for me to keep a low profile."

"Hey," she said. "how does Gabriel track you?" she asked.

"Simple, the amulet that Soren made. One of its many features is that it can be used as a tracking device. However, in order to use it, he has to go back the temple, the original base of the Order of the Stone." He explained.

"Why that temple?" she asked.

"There is a custom pedestal that projects beams of light onto a very large map. Gabriel can use it to accurately pinpoint my current position."

"Does that mean he knows where we are?" she asked, worried.

Ivor shook his head. "Don't worry, it takes weeks to travel back to the Order's temple, and even longer to find out my location. But the amulet is also like a compass, when a certain member of the Order is near, a part of the amulet will glow brighter and brighter, and he does use the Nether as a shortcut."

Jess nodded, remembering from Ivor that traveling one block in the Nether equals three blocks in the Overworld.

"So we train, sneak into Soren's fortress, resurrect and tame the Enderdragon, and sneak out." Jess summarized.

"Yep." Ivor stated. "Once we make back here, I'll use the Command Block to transport this whole place to a new location. Somewhere off the world map so Gabriel can't track us."

"Couldn't you use the Command Block to weaken the Enderdragon? Or maybe get rid of Gabriel?" she asked, but Ivor just shook his head.

"Soren was the most experienced with the Command Block. So naturally he knows most of the functions of the block. I only know how to transport things and directly shape the environment." Said Ivor. "But I do not want to become dependent on the Command Block like Soren. So I try not to use it as much."

"Okay, I guess that makes sense. Anyways, thanks for the gift. I'm going to level up more, maybe my monsters too. Can they come?" she asked.

"Of course, but make sure they're strong. Otherwise they'll get in the way." Said Ivor as he went back to his potion making.

So Jess opened Conquest and looked at the quest section.

You will gain the minion [Elder Shulker].

With a quest this good, how can she refuse? She will start her training, but first she needs to buy an item from Notch.

She went to the new section of her book: items. Like skills, she can buy items from the gods she pledged to. She searched and spent 1300 Divine Points on one item. She didn't expect Herobrine to give her a large bonus of Divine Points after the last quest, so she still has 658 Divine Points left.

With that thought, she used 650 of her Divine Points to buy the skill [Vein Mining].

[Vein-Mining] (Active/Passive) Level 1

When active, you instantly harvest any random, adjacent blocks from the original block you mined. Adjacent block range from origin: 5 blocks. Items dropped from Ores are increased by 200%. Tool durability is reduced 1000% faster.

'A good skill, except for that last part, but it will still level up [mining]. I got a feeling I'll be going through a lot of diamond pickaxes... good thing I looted an entire castle.'

Jess sent out a mental message to her minions to meet her in the Materials room. The room where she constructed that ridiculous enderchest-hopper-chest storage system she made.

As she walked in, waiting for her minions, she used [Observe] on the item she bought before putting it on.

Necklace: Notched Strength

When wearing this necklace, you will gain +3 stat points when you level up.
