One Lovely Day
The morning came, I was in the backseat between Uncle Bart and Danny. We arrived at the place, Danny was covered up like a UFC, we went inside an elevator, and the doors opened to the receding redhead creep.
"So glad you could make it, please follow me."
Of course the arena which was an abandoned swimming pool room smelled like copper and sweat, a big guy who looked like Jason Voorhees but with a Hulk voice and sharp spikes was pounding another fighter in the ring.
"This is our current champion, fifteen fights in a row. Will there be a sixteenth? Maybe, maybe not, well that depends on your man."
Uncle Bart walked to Danny and removed his collar.
"Get em."
Danny started walking down the steps to the fighting ring.
"Excited to see Danny in action?" Uncle Bart asked.
"Kind of."
"First time viewer eh?" The man asked.
"Yes sir-"
"KICK HIS FUCKIN' ASS OFF!" Uncle Bart yelled.
In seconds, the guy was bleeding out his mouth and fell to the ground dead. I was shocked at Danny's ability. He won! Danny had his collar back on and covered back up. Uncle Bart was handed a wad of cash.
"I'm impressed but he's gonna have to be a bit more keen next time. The thing with the collar, brilliant. How did you do that?"
"Like my mum always said, get em young enough and the possibilities are endless."
"I'm sure it was the Jesuits who said that."
"They probably got it from my mum."
I stiffled a laugh. We left the building.
We were in the car.
"You know what I've been thinking, the dream I had last night about the girls?"
"Yeah, and the birds," Georgie replied.
"Well I figured it all out, what it means. Dreams mean something sometimes right Em, you're a psychology buff?"
"It depends on the style of therapy, dreaming can sometimes mean unfinished business or can predict the future. It's called psychoanalysis, Dr. Sigmund Freud came up with it. I learned it in a book I read in the school library."
"Holy shit Em, you're right, exactly what I was thinking, atta girl! I know what it all means, having this dream and getting this money, the dream, the swell, it means retirement, you get it!?"
We nodded.
"I feel better about this, like an epiphany you know. You know I feel really good, I feel generous. Danny...what do you want?"
Me and Uncle Bart turned to Danny who was looking out the window.
"A piano."
"Excuse me?"
"I want a piano."
"How about a lobster dinner?"
I rolled my eyes, the fat ass ain't listening to what Danny wants.
"I want a piano."
"How bout a woman, you never had a woman?"
"I want a piano!"
"Danny, you're starting to piss me off!"
"I want a piano."
It got quiet for second, then Uncle Bart laughed.
"That's what I love about you Danny, one thought at a time, that's what makes us a good team, the brains and the brawn."
He sighed.
"I tell ya, this is gonna be one lovely day."
Suddenly, we were crashed into, we were flying, as soon as the car stopped, I heard multiple gunshots, I took cover. I tried to cover my whole body. As soon as it got quiet, I heard stirring, I lifted my head to see two of the guys knocked out and one exiting the car. I looked out to see Danny walking away while holding his arm. I got out of the car.
"Danny!?" I shouted.
The shards made me slip and fall, I felt a stinging pain on the back of my thigh. He stopped and slowly turned around.
"Danny! Danny help me! I can't get up, please!"
He walked as fast as he could to me. He helped me up with both hands, his arm was bleeding and his opposite hand was smeared in blood.
"How come I wore shorts today!?"
As soon as I pulled the small shard out, Danny took my hand and took off.
"Where are we going?"
He didn't answer.
"Danny, where are we going!?"
He still wasn't answering me, he was panting loudly as he stopped at an old building.
"A music store, how can you still want a piano at a time like this!?"
He led me inside.
"Danny!?"
He went inside a basement, there was some pianos, there was Sam about to tune one.
"Who's there?"
We were both panting.
"It's you isn't it?"
"Yes."
Danny knows Sam!
"You know Sam?" I asked Danny.
"Emma, Emma is that you?"
"Yeah Sam, we need help, we had an accident, we're both hurt-"
Danny passed out, he was hurt worse than me. Sam left work early to take us to his flat. Danny was given the spare room to sleep off the blood loss, I just sat on the couch with a bandage on.
Another day passed, Danny was still sleeping, Victoria showed me the Kombucha in a mason jar in her room.
"That looks so weird."
"I know right, this was a great idea. You can start to see the bacteria forming in there."
"Wonder what grade we'll get for this jar of culture?"
We giggled before she answered with confidence.
"We'll get an A definitely."
She put the jar in it's safe place in her dresser drawer.
"So who is this guy sleeping in the spare room, I hope he makes it?"
"He's a trooper, been through hell and back, he'll make it."
Me and Victoria just chilled in the living room.
The next day, Sam sent Victoria out to get some groceries. He made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for Danny in case he woke up today. He knocked on the door then opened it.
"Hello...oh don't tell me you're still asleep..."
I walked close to the doorway. Sam felt an empty bed. Danny was hiding under it.
"Well now, if I was a fella who woke up in a strange house wearing someone else's pajamas, I would be pretty nervous, I try to find the safest place I could to hide. Now when I was a kid, the safest place in the whole wide world was..."
Sam bent down under the bed scaring Danny.
"Right where you are! Does feel safe doesn't it? Well, I figure a man who been out for two days would wake up pretty hungry so hope you like peanut butter and jelly."
He placed the plate in front of the bed.
"My name is Sam remember? Ok you take your time, Victoria and I aren't big on asking questions, figure when a person is ready, they'll give their answers. Ok?"
He left the room.
"I'll go talk to him," I said.
"Good idea Emma, apparently knows you better than me. The poor young man."
I slowly opened the door, I heard lips smacking, he was eating the sandwich. I sat in front of him with my legs crossed. I heard him panting and trying to scoot far away.
"Danny, it's only me, Emma."
He scooted towards me, jam on the corner of his mouth, I chuckled.
"Did you enjoy that sandwich?"
He nodded then slid the plate with a half sandwich left towards me.
"Are you finished?"
His hand reached over to slide it closer to me.
"Oh you want me to have it?"
He nodded.
"Aww Danny thank you, I am starting to get hungry."
I ate the sandwich while sitting with him.
A couple hours after leaving him alone, Sam was playing the piano while I was listening on the couch. The flat contained a family of two music lovers. I heard Victoria walk in along the rustling of paper grocery bags.
"Hi!" She said.
A door slammed, was that Danny? Me and Sam walked to her and helped her in the kitchen.
"He's cute," she said.
"Really?" Sam asked.
"I like his haircut, reminds me of when I was six, I used to cut my own hair, you and Mom thought it was cute."
"He's not six."
"More is than not I bet. Does he like to read?"
"I don't know."
"Does he like to write, does he like to draw?"
"Sweetie...I don't know anything about him, since we only spend little time together, but he likes music."
"...Cool," she grinned.
She got a small battery operated piano and lent it to Danny.
Soon, dinner was ready, me, Sam and Victoria were at the table about to say grace.
"Thank you for the food we're about to eat, thank you for the peace this house possesses, and make sure Victoria kicks butt on her piano recital."
"I thought we weren't supposed to ask for things."
"Says who?"
"Says you, you always told me those were the rules."
"Did I ever tell you about the exemption for very important piano recitals?"
"Oh yeah exemption, I buy that, not."
"How bout some soup."
He gave her a ladle of potato leek soup. We looked up to see Danny in the doorway watching with the piano clutched to him like a stuffed animal.
"You're just in time, this is your place."
Danny slowly sat in between me and Victoria at the table.
"Sam made this, it's his world famous potato leek soup," Victoria said as she got him some soup.
"World famous," Sam said.
"Here's your napkin."
Danny tucked it down his shirt.
"Pass the bread to him will you Emma?" Sam asked me.
"Ok."
I held the plate of toasted bread to him.
"Want a piece of bread, best part of having soup?"
Sam chuckled as Danny got the piece of bread. He used the bread to scoop up the soup. We chuckled as Victoria picked up a spoon.
"This is a spoon, and this is your spoon."
He picked up the spoon and started hacking the bread in the soup, then he picked up the bowl and chugged it.
"Oh my God," Victoria said laughing.
Danny burped, then Victoria right after.
"A duet," Sam laughed.
We joined in, Danny joined at the last second.
"My name is Danny," he said.
I smiled and held his hand.
