After the nostalgic conversation with the optimistic little orphan, a group of people came through the door. There were three of them. A woman and two men, all wearing plain beige uniforms with childish insignia depicting the popular fictional fawn, Bambi.
They approached us, then one of them began to speak,"Kyou, we need to borrow the new girl so she can get to know us better and feel more comfy in our orphanage , it's almost breakfast time, so I'll put you in charge of waking up the other two childrens".
Kyou gave me a small, pleasant look and went to her bed to tidy it up.
The woman between the other two men held out her chubby hand to me, then smiled blandly out of the corner of her mouth.
I ignored the generous hand and got up from the messy bed.
I followed the volunteers'footsteps to an office. They invited me to sit in a torn leather chair.
The two men held a clipboard and a pencil.
The woman sat across from me and began to speak quietly:
"What is your name, darling?"
I didn't answer.
"We're not here to hurt you, little child - in fact, we're all here to protect you."
I looked away without saying anything.
"Do you like your new room? I saw you've bonded with Kyou?"
No answer. I had a duty not to reveal any information about myself. It could lead them to search for the existence of my family.
The woman sighed, then raised her voice:
"What were you doing on the street at night? I'm beginning to lose my patience. Can you please answer me?"
I could see a certain anger in the blonde woman's eyes.
I decided to give my name, adding a few little lies,"My name is Machigai. I was born without parents in a neighbourhood where I was raised only by tramps and street thieves. I spent my life begging in the streets. That's my story. Now it's my turn to ask you some questions... How did you find me, and where am I?"
One of the men spoke up, "Machigai, for now you're safe in the 'Bambi' orphanage. One of our orphanage volunteers found you lying on a dangerous road. So we brought you here. "
The words hung in the air, the tension not fully dissipating. I wanted to ask more, feel safe, but the time passed in torrement. They stood up, gesturing for me to follow them.
They led me to a large cafeteria, where the chatter of children filled the space. They sat in groups eating repugnant meals.
Kyou was sitting by herself in a corner, absentmindedly playing with her food. When our eyes met, she smiled softly and mentioned for me to join her.
