A tense air spread through the atmosphere, weighing heavily in the living room. The seconds passed, and all four eyes remained riveted to the soda bottle, as if it held the answer to the unspoken battle between us.
"I see... you're one of the victims of the infectious rich life," I said, my voice steady, still not meeting his eyes.
"What do you mean by that? That I'm part of this spoiled, rotten community? I'm just asking you to do your job and pick up the can," he shot back, turning his back on me with a sharp, dismissive movement.
He continued, now with a hint of irony in his tone, walking towards the kitchen opposite the living room, "Otherwise, I'd like to thank you for defending me when my little sister was talking behind my back."
Frustration etched itself onto his features, an overwhelming look falling over his rather handsome face, his clenched jaw betraying the emotions simmering beneath the surface.
Joo-seo, the chic and refined name his adoptive parents gave him.
After a brief conversation, I got to know him.
Cold, classic.
Not very talkative and aloof, like all the sexy boys of our generation. His character is a cliché straight out of romance Webtoons.
But to be honest, I’m not much of a talker either, and I’m looking forward to talking to someone like me again. An orphan.
Like me, he revealed nothing about his birth parents or the name he was given at birth.
This whole name thing often weighs on my mind. The volunteers at the Bambi orphanage couldn’t find any birth records for me, even though my name was unusual.
Machigai... Does that mean I was really a mistake? Whether on earth or stuck in this box of memories with my husband, I will remain an abstract child.
Joo-seo sighed, then muttered through his teeth, "The presence of the two demons upstairs gives me the creeps. I just want them gone, like I want to kill them so bad."
"Then do it. What's stopping you?" I said, finally deciding to pick up the soda can from the ground.
He crouched down to help me clean up his mess while talking, "I don’t know, what’s stopping me? Maybe the government, jail, or the fact that I’d no longer be the heir to the bastards who adopted me."
My face turned livid of shock. "Wait, you’re the one who’s going to get money from those business pigs?!?"
He laughed at the nickname I’d given to his innkeepers.
It had been several months since I’d unleashed my gentle inner monster, and my new life lacked a refreshing touch of revenge.
"Let’s play hide-and-seek in the garden, OK, Soo-jin?"
At my words, Soo-jin ran frantically into the garden. I turned on the gas tap on the stove without lighting the fire, then pulled Joo-seo’s left hand to join us in our game of hide-and-seek.
Minutes passed, and Soo-jin was enjoying her time.
"Oh, thirty minutes have gone by; the pigs will be cooked soon."
Joo-seo stared at me, "What the hell are you talking about..."
His sentence was cut off by a deafening explosion, the whistling sound filling our ears as the fire from the blast illuminated our eyes.
"Mommy and Daddy have gone, but money will replace them, don't you think, Joo-seo?"
