Chapter 12: We failed him.

(Ravine POV)

"Good morning, Grace!" I said as I was holding a basket of goodies for Troy and his family, next to Gwen.

"Good morning, Vinny. Good morning, Gwen!"

"We came here to visit Troy. We noticed that he hasn't been coming to school lately so maybe we could cheer him up." Gwen said.

"Come in, come in!" Grace said. "Please, excuse the mess."

"No, it's okay. We don't mind at all. We actually owe you an apology because we were supposed to visit Troy a long time ago but our schedule has been very hectic lately." I said.

"We were texting him and he's actually not replying in the past few days. Did something happen if I may ask?" Gwen asked.

"I think it's better if you speak to him yourself. He won't speak to us anymore." She said with a sad smile on her face. I gave her the basket so Gwen and I can make our way upstairs.

We knocked on Troy's door and called out for him several times.

"Troy! It's me and Gwen. Can we come in?" I said.

After several attempts of trying to get him to answer but to no avail, Gwen and I finally tried opening the door slowly so we can take a peek of what Troy's doing. We saw him sleeping on his bed comfortably so we decided to jump on there and surprise him with hugs and kisses.

"Troy! Rise and shine, camper!" I said as Gwen and I bounced on his bed like little kids.

"Troy, wake up!" Gwen said as she tried tapping Troy's shoulder.

"Troy? Troy?" I said as I rocked him a little hard. I bent over and tried speaking loudly to his ear but he still wouldn't wake up.

Please, don't tell me it is what I think it is.

Gwen and I rushed downstairs to get Troy's parents and inform both of them about him. They quickly hurried up to his room to check on him. John tried to feel the pulse on his son's wrist and after examining him for a while, he looked at his wife and shook his head before breaking down into tears. It was soon followed by Grace's outburst, and it was then followed by ours.

Grace fell down on her knees and kept on screaming.

"No! No! No! We failed him. We failed him, John." She cried before being consoled by her husband.

Meanwhile, Gwen and I are standing next to each other crying our hearts out for them. What makes it even sadder is we didn't get to visit him one last time.

Later at the hospital...

John, Grace, Gwen and I are anxiously waiting for the doctor when he finally showed up after performing an autopsy on Troy's corpse.

"So I am going to give it to you right away. We found no signs of any drug overdose in his system whatsoever. We found no lacerations in any part of his body or no signs of self-harm anywhere. Yes, he died in his sleep but we couldn't find any cause for it. We didn't find any evidence of cardiac or respiratory arrest. To be completely honest, I have never seen any case like this before. It's like he died in the most painless way possible." The doctor said.

"His whole life, he has been in pain. He has been bullied relentlessly and he hides his conditions from most of his loved ones. He keeps his problems to himself. Words cannot describe the sadness and despair I am in right now but in some way, I am glad that he didn't suffer any pain in his death. He died peacefully in his sleep. He was burdened enough with so many problems that I honestly believe God took him from us in the most painless way possible and I know that someday, I will get to apologize to him for my shortcomings." Grace cried before being pulled to John's embrace.

After making some arrangements and planning the funeral, Troy's parents thanked us for accompanying them at the hospital before Gwen and I bid them both goodbye.

"Oh, Ravine!" Grace said.

"Yes, ma'am?"

"I saw this underneath Troy's pillow. I think he wanted you to have this." She said before giving me an envelope with a label, "For Ravine".

"Thank you."

I was so curious about this letter but I managed to prevent my curiosity from opening it and reading it in the hospital. It may be better if I read this myself in the privacy of my own room so I can give my full attention to it.
