Chapter 26: The End
Maeve's POV
Two months into the merger and things were finally starting to come together. The board members had settled down, and it required much more than fair play for them come to Seth's side. I can not begin to praise Seth for what he had sacrificed for the merger to happen without any glitches.
Seth has been right about every aspect of the meager. I was being watched by almost every board member with free time on their hands, they were waiting for me to falter. I had seen the corporate world since I was in my diapers, their tactics were old in my eyes. I knew how to deal with them.
I was seated in my cabin that was on the tenth floor of the office building. The floor was allotted to my company, that didn't have it's original name anymore, nor its identity but it worked by the same principals and perhaps in the future it would stand on its own again.
There was a soft knock on my cabin door, I looked up to see Seth smiling at me through the see through glass. I gestured for him to come in, setting my work down.
"Sweetheart, have you seen the time?" It was half past ten. I had been working many late nights since the merger but I could say the same for the man before me.
"What can I say, my boss is a strict man." I grinned at him, getting up from my seat. I was mostly done with my work anyway.
"Should I have a talk with him? He is coming inbetween my beautiful wife and I." I shook my head and laughed along with him.
"Ready to go home?" I asked him. There were days that we left the office together, and days that we didn't see each other till we reached the bed. It had been difficult but we were taking small steps.
"More than ready." The mischievous glint in his eyes made a shiver run down my spine. He took my hand and we walked through the dim lit halls of the office building. Hardly anyone remained except the security guards and a few staff members.
"How are things going?" I looked up to smile at him, his eyes held concern that was heartwarming to see.
"Things are good, Seth. Stop worrying. I know I asked too much of you during the merger but I have come to terms with it now. I will take care from my end, please don't do anything more." He had managed to hide a lot of actions he had taken behind the scenes but I still got to know of a few. I knew he was pulling all sorts of strings to get the board members off my back and to ensure I have some rights to the company. I admired him for it, I needed time and he had given me that. I was strong enough to handle it all now.
His lips drew into a smile as he pulled the passenger side of the door open for me, "I have never doubted your capability to handle a few old men and women. I know just like how you can open the car door yourself, you can manage them too. Yet I want to be there, maybe it's insignificant, maybe you could do it better but if there was any way I could make it easier, I will not hesitate."
"You leave me speechless." That was all I could say because the emotions I felt inside could not be put in words. I was standing before him, mirroring his smile. I hadn't got inside the car yet and his eyes froze me in place. I was the first to lean forward, I knew because his eyes spoke for his surprise.
I kissed him, hoping he could feel how he made me feel. I kissed him, hoping he saw how much I appreciated his entire existence. I was leaning against the body of the car, the cold metal a stark contrast to the warmth Seth's body was emitting. He pulled away ever so slightly and placed a small kiss at the corner of my lips.
"You will be the death of me." His coarse voice was enough to make me forget all about where we were. I smiled up at him.
He placed another quick kiss on my lips and I got inside the car. The screen lit up as Seth started the car, I recognised the date almost immediately. I had not forgotten ofcourse, I knew our marriage anniversary was due the next day but sometime during the day I had forgotten the date.
I frowned as Seth deviated from our route to the house.
"Seth?"
"Yes?"
"Where are we going?"
"It's a surprise." I took his free hand in mine and placed our intertwined hands on my lap. The city lights dimmed as we left the crowded spaces and soon we were on an empty road surrounded by trees.
We reached a cliff looking over the city. The stars above seemed to have mirrored the city lights below but shinned even brighter.
"It's so beautiful." I murmured, at awe of the scene before me. Seth got out of the car and went over the boot of the car to get something. I took my sweet time to get out and follow him. He had a set of blankets in one hand and a wine bottle in the other.
"A man after my own heart." I took the blankets from his hand and settled beside him on the ground.
"This reminds me of our honeymoon." Seth and I shared the blanket, sitting shoulder to shoulder. My legs were over his as he poured us both some wine.
"That reminds me, I think we need another honeymoon."
"Really? Why is that?"
"I feel I missed out on certain things the last time." His lips stretched into a smirk.
"Sign me up." I held a smirk if my own.
"I have wanted to ask you something." I looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "Would you perhaps like to have another wedding?"
"Why?" I couldn't quite grasp what he was getting at, we were already married what was the use of going through the ceremony again? And that was setting aside all the explaining we'd have to do.
"I was going over the idea. You probably had plans for your wedding that you couldn't fulfil in the one we had. Don't think about what others will say. Tell me how you feel about it." His eyes were trying to read my every move and I loved him for it. I couldn't help but lean in for a kiss. I was grinning while we parted.
"I love you for giving this so much thought. I really do. But all I have ever wanted from a wedding is a to be with a man who would I can hold on to for the rest of my life. I got that. I understand where you are coming from, but what colour the flowers were at our wedding doesn't bother me. I cherish our marriage right here, right now." I was holding his hand, hoping he understood. "If you want to have another wedding, I will not refute. I'd love to participate in a declaration of our love." I added.
His lips curled up to form a smile that warmed my soul. He brought our intertwined hands to his lips, "I couldn't agree more with what you said. I cherish our marriage right here, right now." He repeated, coming closer to kiss the corner of my mouth.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
We sat there and talked between kisses for a while, enjoying each others presence.
"Maeve." He whispered, over the creaking of the crickets.
"Hmm?" His eyes held mine in the most loving gaze, I forgot how to breathe.
"Happy anniversary." I realised that's all I needed. I didn't want anything else from him. Just that his eyes held the same love every time he said those words to me.
"Happy anniversary." I whispered back. He leaned forward to kiss me, and I lost myself in him once again.
I was completely in love with my husband and I wouldn't have it any other way.
