Forty Three
Meet me at the library
-Remus
Abigail folds the letter with a satisfied smirk settled on her face. "Here," she tosses a stale cracker from Alice's desk at Sodapop, hurrying to get ready. Alice and Hestia were painting each other's nails on the floor when Abigail brushes past carelessly.
"Watch it!" Alice scolds, moving her nail polish bottle. "This is my favorite color!"
"Sorry," Abigail says gabbing her perfume bottle on the table. She spritzes herself three times. "I didn't see it."
"Where are you going?" Marlene asks. She sits on her bed with a cloth, polishing the handle of her broomstick.
"I'm going to meet Remus," she tells them giddily.
"Didn't you two, like, break up?" Hestia questions.
Lily takes her hair down out of its ponytail, brushing it out in front of the mirror. "Can I?" Abigail asks, walking over to Lily. The redhead hands her the brush, moving over to sit with Marlene. "We're on a break," Abigail explains running the pink brush through her long blonde locks. "He just sent me an owl to go meet him."
"Secret rendezvous!" Alice squeals. "I wish Frank would do that."
"Alice, Frank graduated," Marlene points out.
Alice frowns, capping her nail polish. "Don't remind me."
Abigail glosses her lips one last time, smacking her thin lips in the mirror to evenly coat them. "Alright, I'll be back!" She jumps over Alice and Hestia's set up, exiting the dorm with an extra skip in her step. The common room was completely empty, rare for a Friday night. It wasn't even that late yet. The sun was set completely, revealing a cloudless starry night outside. The perfect setting for a romantic night.
The library door was propped open with a dragon head doorstop, but the lights were shut off. Abigail pulls the door open, spotting Remus sitting on one of the couches. A few candles are lit on the table, a hazy glow illuminating him.
"Remus?" Abigail whispers.
"Abigail," Remus calls, turning at the sound of her voice.
She takes a seat next to him, crossing her legs on the couch with a flirty smile. "Hey."
"Hey."
"What did you want to meet me for?"
Remus faces her completely, rubbing his thumb on her exposed knee. "Sirius is getting expelled." Abigail's eyes widen. "He leaves first thing tomorrow morning."
"What?" she gasps. "I told you he cursed Lisa!"
Remus moves over to her and wraps his arms around her. She cranes her neck, allowing Remus to hold his head against her. "I just don't know why he would do it. Or how he did it!"
"He's a vicious person, Rem. You can finally see him for what he is. He's vile, ruthless." She comforts him, rubbing his back affectionately. "He'll pay for what he did."
"What if I was out in the forest? I could've hurt her myself!"
"Don't worry baby. Black is going away, for a very long time."
Remus pulls away slightly, "I'm going to run away. I'm going to run away to be with him."
"What?" Abigail's pushes him away with an incredulous look. "You're going to run away? To be with Black?" Remus nods eagerly. "After what he did to Lisa?"
"He didn't mean it. I wanted to meet you here to say goodbye. I'm leaving in the morning with Sirius."
"Remus!" Abigail stands up furiously, her face changing from white to red. "After all that he's done - you still want to be with him? He cursed Lisa! He used Dark Magic!" She paces across the floor, her blonde hair flying around as she sharply turns.
"It wasn't his spell!" Remus argues.
Abigail faces him, blinded by rage. "But he stole it from Snape to use against her!"
Remus sits back, knitting his eyebrows together. The likings of a smirk reside at the corner of his mouth, but he pushes it away. He leans closer, resting his forearms on his knees with a stoney look. "How do you know that?" he asks.
"What?"
"I never said anything about Snape."
Abigail's eyes widen in horror. "Remus."
"It was you - wasn't it? You were there." Abigail rushes over to Remus, taking his hands in hers. Her lips quiver and her hands shake his. Crystal blue eyes are glazed over with tears as she stares up at him defenselessly. "You were the one who cursed Lisa."
"I didn't mean to hit her! I did it for us! For our love!"
"You would've killed Sirius." Abigail gets to her feet, balling a fist tightly. She looks as if she's going to implode at any moment. "If Regulus Black hadn't gotten there first and saved him."
"We loved each other Remus!" Her voice is cracked, ripping with every word. "How can you just forget about that? We dated for six years! And you go screw around with Sirius Black? You never even talked to him until this year! You broke up with me because of him! He's evil, Remus!"
Remus refuses to meet her eye. She doesn't seem to notice, rubbing her temples to ease the mass headache clouding her thoughts.
"All year," she continues." All year you've slowly been pulled away from me! I'm sick and tired of always -" She smashes her hand on the table, pain shooting through her arm. "I saw the spell in Snape's book a long time ago since Potter never let me share his book. He's such a prat. You'll realize it one day. You're blind to them Remus. You forgive them too easily for all the shit they put you through! And then you started to love me. Like really love me again. Or so I thought."
Abigail crosses the floor dangerously, pounding her fist in her other hand repeatedly. "Turns out you were just cheating on me behind my back. With him. I had to do something! After we kissed in the common room that night, you left. You broke my heart. Again. But I heard them. Your so called friends. Sirius said he was going to talk to you. It was the perfect chance."
"What were you going to do if you had killed him?" Remus asks.
"Probably blamed you. Who would question the nature of a werewolf?" Abigail stops pacing, her eyes glowing in the light. "I followed him that night. But perfect little Lily Evans was there. She would've seen me, so I was forced to hide. Behind a bloody boulder! My face was pressed against it so hard I could barely breathe, but it worked I suppose. She never saw me. And then came along Lisa and Snape. I knew Sirius would get away if he were to duel them so I had to do what I came for."
"But Regulus came," Remus says.
"Yes. Little old Regulus Black. I acted fast, but I was too late. He had hit the tree just as I aimed for Sirius."
"You missed and hit Lisa instead."
"Unfortunately, yes. But it worked in my favor anyway. Poor Lisa Ward, cursed within an inch of her life. I took Snape's book during Potions, but that brat almost screwed me over. Bumped into me and spilt all my books! Luckily she was too dumb to know anything. I put it in Sirius' bag when nobody was in your dorm and watched everything unfold."
Remus leans against the couch, amazed at the depth. "The perfect plan..."
"Now he's going to be expelled."
"Sirius is innocent."
"But nobody knows that, huh? Who's going to believe you over the poor girl who got cheated on?"
"I would." Abigail gasps, turning to see Sirius emerge from one of the aisles. His stance is nonchalant, casual. He tucks his hands into the pockets of his pants, half turning back to the dark aisle. "What about you, Professor?"
Dumbledore walks out behind him, the lights of the library flicking on. His long grey robes sway against the floor, the candles reflecting in his half-moon spectacles. "I would too, Sirius."
"P-Professor!" Abigail stutters. She turns to Remus, her eyes shooting daggers. "You set me up!"
Remus pushes himself off of the couch, walking over to Sirius. "I did. But it wasn't all me." The rest of the Marauders, Lily Evans, and Frances Berkshire appear from a separate aisle of books.
"Brilliant plan," Lily says circling around. "But you know, lip gloss stains. Especially with the overload you coat your lips with."
"And that brat does know a thing or two," Frances spits.
"If it wasn't for my so called friends, you would've gotten away with it," Remus explains. "So let's see. It started with Frances. She saw you that night sneaking out before Peeves caught her and told Sirius. But when she told Sirius, he was under the impression that it was Lily Evans. But...Lily was at the Whomping Willow before Sirius. She couldn't have been following him. And then it gets confusing. Sirius remembered seeing Regulus that night and confronted him. Of course, Regulus sort of admitted to it. Didn't he?"
Sirius nods his head, glaring at Abigail.
"He didn't want to admit that he was trying to protect Sirius," Remus continues. "So instead he took the blame for everything to push Sirius away. We can fast forward a bit to when I told Sirius about your kiss in the common room. And then he told me about Regulus. We have a no secret pact, you see. Which is when this loud screaming was happening outside the common room. And who else to show up but Frances? She was yelling trying to convince us that Regulus was innocent and that the girl following Sirius was blonde."
"Lily's hair is auburn," James states. "A dark strawberry. Not quite ginger."
"Thanks, Prongs," Remus cuts off. "And then in comes James and Lily. They were really muddy, for some reason, but that's not really the point. Lily claimed that you were there that night. You had to be. Your lip gloss was smudged against a rock for god knows why. But you've explained that. How could you know the spell? Well that was easy. James was always complaining about how you never had your book during Potions. Sharing a table with Snape was just pure luck. And then Frances told us about running into you. How your books spilt all over the floor and she picked them up for you. Advanced Potions. But...you don't have a book, do you? You said you forgot it on the first day, but let's face it. You never had one. So why would you have one now? It was impossible for Sirius or Snape to do it, being knocked out by the Whomping Willow, even though Snape boasted about it to get some popularity amongst his fellow Slytherins. And here we are."
"Well done, Mr. Lupin," Professor Dumbledore says stepping in. "Miss McHealy, would you please follow me to my office?"
"I hate you, all of you!" Abigail shouts.
Abigail trails after Dumbledore reluctantly, leaving the group alone in the library. Remus collapses on the couch exhausted. "Bloody fucking hell," he groans.
James laughs, muffling it with his hand.
"What're you laughing about?" Lily asks.
"We fucking did it!" James exclaims throwing his hands up. "Honestly, you couldn't have done it without me."
Sirius chucks a newspaper at his face. "You didn't do anything!"
"Hey, I dropped Lily on the ground and she found the lip gloss. I think that deserves some credit! What about Peter? He didn't do anything either!"
"He was there for support," Sirius justifies. "You just spread paranoia around like sprinkles!"
Frances sits on the couch beside Remus, putting a comforting hand on his. "Thank you," Remus says kindly. "Couldn't have figured it out without you."
Peter groans, rubbing his stomach. "Can we please go eat?" he borderline demands.
"A brilliant idea, Peter," Lily says with a smirk towards James. "Far better than running away every time you see me."
James blushes profusely. "I said I was sorry! Whatever, cake's on me everyone!"
"The kitchen is free, Prongs!" Sirius shouts.
Frances scoots off the couch, hurrying beside Lily to follow James and Peter. Sirius gives a hand to Remus, pulling him off the couch and holding him closely. Remus cups his hand around Sirius' cheek, leaning down so their foreheads touched. "You know," he beings, "I don't know if I ever told you. But I love you too."
Sirius furrows his eyebrows. "I'm sorry, what?"
Remus chuckles, "I love you."
"Just wanted to hear it again." He presses his lips to Remus' with slow, soft movement.
