46. Still The One

I've had this chapter in my head since I decided Jess would go and visit Harry in LA and I've been dying to write it for ages, so here we go, I hope you like it.
I love votes, comments and Harry Styles, so feel free to leave me any of the above :)
Oh, and if you would recommend this story I would be even more happy!

--------********--------

I was woken the following morning by Harry's groans. I opened my eyes to see him laying on his back with his arm over his face.

"What's the matter?" I croaked, trying to find my voice.

"I feel so ill," he mumbled.

"That'll be all the champagne you drank last night," I offered.

He flinched at the mention of champagne. "Why didn't you stop me?" he moaned.

"I was in no fit state," I chuckled.

"I can barely remember," he confessed. "I remember the restaurant but the club's just a blur." He paused. "Did I shout at a pap?"

I giggled. "I think you were defending my honour," I teased. "It was very chivalrous."

He smiled and pulled his arm off his face to look at me. His eyes looked tired. I dreaded to think what I must have looked like. He rolled over onto his side towards me and started to say something, then broke off and looked away, exhaling loudly.

I looked at him questioningly, but he didn't look at me. I noticed little beads of sweat breaking out on his forehead, and he suddenly leaped out of bed, making me jump. "Be right back," he mumbled. He made a dash for the bathroom, and a couple of seconds later I heard him puking into the toilet bowl.

I wrinkled my nose, and reached over for my phone and the tv remote. I switched on MTV and saw I had new text messages.

From: Callie: You're top story on Daily Mail showbiz!! xx

From: Sarah: Daily Mail - AGAIN!!!! xxx

From: Sarah: You both look hot btw. Imagine your kids xxx

From: Calvin: If he publicly breaks your heart I will publicly break his face

From: Mum: Hello love. Are you having a nice time? Maddie showed me the article about you and Harry. He looks like a nice boy. Dad said his hair is a bit long though. Will you be bringing him home to meet us? Love Mum x

From: Gary: Don't be thinking all this publicity will get you special treatment in work, slacker.

I sighed and opened up the Daily Mail app, and sure enough, the top story was a brief article about mine and Harry's night out with about 30 pictures of us, starting with us arriving at the restaurant, then leaving the restaurant, then leaving Project, and finally Harry talking to the paps through the open window of the car, with a very stern look on his face.

I closed the app and Googled Harry Styles and the first 4 articles that came up were about last night. I read them all - Sugarscape, Hollywood Life, Heatworld and The Mirror. They all said pretty much the same thing; that I had been pictured with him a few times, we had enjoyed a night out etc etc, but I noticed Sugarscape was now saying we had never been seen kissing, and suspicions were being cast over the status of our "relationship."

I was just pondering this when Harry appeared in the doorway wearing a pair of black boxers, with his hair in a mun and bloodshot eyes. "I feel like death," he moaned. "What are you doing?"

"Just reading about our night out last night," I answered. "If you can't remember much, the tabloids will gladly fill you in."

He rolled his eyes. "Don't read that shit." He flopped on the bed next to me then winced and groaned again.

"I can't help it," I admitted. "I want to know what people are saying about me."

"They're saying you're beautiful," he said softly.

My stomach did its usual flip. "They're not, actually," I said.

"Well I am," he replied.

Another flip. I looked at him and he smiled at me. Oh God, that smile. It's hot enough to melt the polar ice caps.

"You wanna just hang out here today?" he asked.

"Yeah definitely," I said. "I might even throw you in the pool. If your stomach can stand it."

He grimaced. "Yeah, sorry about just now," he apologised. "I had to make a run for it."

"I gathered," I teased him. "Could you manage some breakfast?"

He pulled another face. "Maybe..."

"I'll make some toast while you have a shower if you like," I offered.

He leaned forward and kissed me. "Sounds like a plan," he said.

I grabbed one of Harry's discarded t-shirts and pulled it on with a pair of girl boxers and headed down to the kitchen while he showered. My head was pounding as I made some tea and waited for the toaster to pop. I sat down on a stool once it was ready, and forced down a slice of toast and sipped my tea.

Harry entered the kitchen wearing just a pair of shorts, his hair still pulled off his face. My eyes flicked between his face and his chest; I couldn't decide which to stare at. He looked incredible.

"Hey did Grimmy reply to the picture you sent him?" he asked, grinning at my drooly expression.

"Yeah, he said I'm way too cool to be hanging out with some loser in a boyband," I teased.

"No he didn't," Harry said, flicking my leg with his finger, and I laughed.

"Nah, he didn't really," I said. I paused, remembering a conversation I'd had with Grimmy in The Rose Garden. "You know something," I said, pretending the thought had only just struck me, "you really remind me of that other guy that did X Factor... what was his name now... oh yeah! Frankie Cocozza." I bit my lip to hide my smile.

Harry put his mug down on the counter noisily. "Are you joking?"

I looked down at my own mug and held in my laugh. "No, why?" I said innocently. He was silent, and I looked up to see him staring at me with a pissed off expression on his face. I pressed my lips together hard but couldn't stop the smile from breaking on my face.

"You're taking the piss aren't you," he said and I started to laugh. He shook his head, smiling. "You are so gonna regret that."

"Bet I don't," I challenged.

His smile widened. "Oh believe me, I will get my revenge, and it will be sooner than you think," he said. "Just you wait."

I hopped off my stool, still laughing, and draped my arms around his neck. He turned his face away from me, and I laughed harder, moving so I was in his line of vision, but he kept turning his face away. "I was only teasing," I said. "The similarities aren't as obvious now your hair's longer."

At this he pulled my arms away from his neck, shaking his head and grinning, and I collapsed on my stool, laughing hysterically. I picked up my phone and sent a DM to Nick Grimshaw.

To: @grimmers: He didn't take the Frankie Cocozza comparison too well!

I left Harry finishing his toast and went up to have a shower. I slipped on my white bikini and pulled Harry's t-shirt back on over the top. It smelled deliciously of him, and the scent made me feel nervous and safe at the same time.

He wasn't in the kitchen when I went back downstairs, and I found him on his back on a sun lounger by the pool. He lifted his head as I walked over to him and I sat down next to him.

"I hate that my tshirt looks better on you than me," he said.

I was unable to hide my grin at this statement. "I disagree with that," I said. I pulled it up over my head and tossed it onto the table and grabbed the bottle of suncream. Harry's phone was going off periodically and he was tapping away on it, smirking.

After applying the suncream I laid back on the sun lounger next to Harry. He moved his leg so it was touching mine and I turned my head and smiled at him. We lay side by side in the sun talking quietly. Harry made some wraps for lunch about 12pm, and we ate them half heartedly, both still feeling a little delicate after last night.

I replied to all my texts after we'd eaten, and then roped Harry into blowing up the pink lilo I'd bought in Beverly Hills the previous day. Once it was fully inflated I carried it over to the pool and managed to board it cautiously, refusing to allow Harry anywhere near me in case he pushed me in. Once I was laid on it properly I pushed my foot against the side of the pool, sending the lilo floating gently towards the deep end. Harry watched me with an amused smile on his face.

"I feel like you should be wafting me with palm leaves or something," I called to him, and he laughed. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the heat on my face and the gentle breeze. The lilo floated up to the deep end and I nudged my foot against the side again to send it drifting slowly towards the shallow end. I felt sleep closing in on me, and as the lilo gently bobbed against the end of the pool, I sent it once more towards the deep end, and faintly heard the sound of the doorbell.

"Back in a sec," Harry said, and I heard him get up and walk across the patio and into the house. I yawned and let my head fall to the side, my eyes still closed. It was so peaceful and relaxing to float up and down on the surface of the pool. I felt like nothing on this earth could move me from my position.

It was a few minutes before I heard the kitchen door open again. I didn't open my eyes, even as Harry said, "Just security checking we're still alive."

"Mmmhh," I responded.

I heard scuffling by the back door, then it clicked shut.

"Don't start snoring," Harry teased. I could hear the grin in his voice.

"I don't snore," I said sleepily.

"Yeah right," he sniggered. I stuck my middle finger up behind me in his general direction and he laughed.

"Nice lilo, Jess," another voice said.

My heart nearly leapt out of my chest. There was no mistaking that voice.

"Oh my God!" I wailed, sitting bolt upright, which caused the lilo to wobble dangerously. I grabbed both sides of it to steady myself but it was too late; it tipped over sideways and I screamed as I plunged into the cold pool, the lilo upside down on top of me. I flailed in the water as I fought my way to the surface, and felt someone plunge in next to me. As my head popped up out of the water, I pushed my hair out of my eyes and took a deep breath, turning around to look for the person whose voice I had just heard. I focussed on Harry standing on the side of the pool smirking at me with his arms folded across his chest.

"Wh... wha... where...?" was all I could stammer, my eyes wide and my mouth bobbing like a goldfish. Harry's grin widened and he shifted his gaze and inclined his head to a spot behind me in the pool. My heart pounded sickeningly as I whipped around...

...and came face to face with Louis Tomlinson. "Hello," he smiled.

I gasped, covering my face with my hands, and whimpered, "Oh my God."

Louis giggled. "That was some move you pulled on your lilo just then."

"Well I wasn't expecting you to show up," I squeaked, lamely. "You were in the UK last time I ch..." I trailed off. Shut up, Jess.

I became very aware he was standing in the water three feet away from me, dripping wet, wearing only a pair of shorts.

"Last time you what, Jess?" came Harry's voice behind me. Even whilst staring at Louis in a mixture of awe, adoration and disbelief, I could tell Harry was grinning in delight behind me.

I cleared my throat. "Last I heard."

"How did you know it was me?" Louis asked, still smiling. Damn he was hot.

"I recognised your voice," I said, my face flaming.

"Ah, I thought Harry might have told you we were coming," he said.

"He knew?!" I shouted, turning round to look again at Harry, whose grin still hadn't left his face.

"Told you I'd get revenge," Harry smirked.

"Anyway, nice to meet you," Louis said, moving forward in the water. Oh Christ he was going in for a hug. I was about to get a hug from Louis Tomlinson. LOUIS FREAKING TOMLINSON!!!! He slipped his arms around me and gave me a hug, then a kiss on the cheek. A kiss on the cheek, for the fucking win!!!

"Alright, put her down," Harry called from the side.

I was never washing my face ever again. EVER. I didn't dare turn round to face Harry until I had attempted to get my grin under control. My heart was pounding wildly and my hands were shaking.

"You not coming in, Payno?" Louis called over my shoulder.

Wait, WHAT?!

I whipped around to look in the direction of Louis' gaze, and my legs nearly gave way in the water. Liam Payne was sitting in a corner on a sun lounger, watching the scene unfold, with an amused look on his face. "Oh my God!" I squealed again, and the three of them laughed wickedly and Liam gave me a shy wave. How the hell had I not noticed him sooner?

"Hi Jess," he said, smiling.

"Hi Liam," I squeaked shyly, trying not to hyperventilate.

I finally turned my gaze on Harry, who was grinning all over his face, and shook my head wordlessly. I flicked my hand over the surface of the water at him, sending a shower of droplets up his legs, and he jumped back, laughing. I couldn't believe I'd just let my inner Directioner make a full-on appearance in front of 3 members of the band. Wait a minute...

I popped my head up and began looking all around the sides of the pool, the garden, and even craned my neck to try and peer through the door into the kitchen.

"What are you doing?" Harry asked.

I rolled my eyes. "Looking for Niall, obviously. He's the trump card, isn't he?"

Harry, Louis and Liam all laughed. "He's not here," Harry said.

"Oh come on," I said. "He's the only one I knew was even in the country. Where's he hiding?"

Harry laughed harder. "He's really not here, honestly. It's just these two."

"He's telling the truth," Louis piped up. Oh my God, Louis Tomlinson was talking to me. GET A GRIP, JESS.

"Sorry to disappoint," Harry smiled.

I hesitated, not believing Harry and Louis. I looked between the two of them, then turned my head to Liam for confirmation.

"Niall's really not here," Liam said.

"OK," I said, relaxing a bit.

"Hey, why do you only believe it when Liam says so?" Harry pouted.

"Because Liam's honest," I said before I could stop myself. Harry grinned at the embarrassed expression that flooded my face. I needed to pull myself together, and fast. Behind me, Louis was trying to do a handstand but kept tipping over.

They're just boys! I told myself.

One Direction boys! my subconscious replied wickedly.

Don't start another argument with yourself, I scolded myself.

I watched Louis for a minute.

"You need to go deeper," I said to him as he tipped over for the third time and poked his head above the surface. He flashed me a cheeky smirk. "In the water," I said.

"I like going deeper," he said, grinning, and waded towards the deep end as Harry and Liam both gave dirty laughs and I blushed crimson. He disappeared under the water again and his legs stuck up in the air for about two seconds before they started to lean to the side and Louis' face appeared again.

"You're crap at that," I teased.

"Oh, you can do better can you?" he said, raising an eyebrow. "Let's see then."

Oh Christ. My body was still trembling with nerves at being so close to 3 out of 4 of One Direction. I took a deep breath and dived under water and stuck my legs above the surface. I felt the water break as someone else plunged in, but I held my breath and my balance as long as I could before I flipped over and surfaced again.

"Not bad," Louis remarked. I opened my eyes and saw Harry was no longer standing on the side of the pool. Liam was just getting to his feet off the sun lounger. I turned round in the water but could only see Louis.

"Where is he?" I asked warily.

Louis smirked and shrugged, and I felt two hands grab my waist under the water. I let out a squeak of surprise, and felt Harry's head push between my legs and lift me up out of the water onto his shoulders. I grabbed onto his hair and squealed as he stood up, feeling extremely self conscious that Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne could now cop an eyeful of me in just a bikini.

Liam stood on the edge of the pool, took a deep breath and dive bombed in, sending a massive wave of water over me, Harry and Louis.

"Twat," Louis called, as Liam's head appeared out of the water, and Liam laughed.

The boys messed about in the pool for a bit and then we got back on the sun loungers to sunbathe. I draped my hair over the back of mine to dry it, and slipped my sunglasses on so I was free to stare at them all without being detected. I was so worried they'd notice my trembling hands, or my heart pounding in my chest. I was so happy and excited to be hanging out with the majority of One Direction, I felt on the verge of hysterical tears. How I kept my composure I will never know.

They chatted a bit about the flight, and I quietly picked up my phone and sent a message to Maddie.

To: Maddie: If you're awake, facetime me now, but act like you're just calling for a chat and DO NOT FREAK OUT xxx

I put my phone back on the table. It was nearly 11pm back at home and it was a school night, but I hoped she might still be awake. However, after about 5 minutes I concluded she must be in bed. There was no way I could call her without making it really obvious what I was doing, and there was no point texting my mum to ask her to wake Maddie, as my mum didn't know where her mobile was half the time.

"So you're a fan then, Jess?" Louis asked suddenly.

I felt heat rising in my face at being addressed directly by Louis Tomlinson from One Direction, and butterflies filled my stomach. "Um, yeah, a bit," I said shyly.

"A bit!" Harry scoffed, smiling.

"A big fan then?" Louis asked, looking at me.

"Well, I like your music," I managed to say calmly, while my stomach twisted and turned. I stuck my hands underneath my back to try and stop them from shaking.

I saw Harry smirking and raised my eyebrow over my sunglasses, but this only seemed to spur him on more. "She's crazy," Harry teased. "We're, like, her favourite band ever."

As if he was doing this. And he was damn well enjoying it, too.

"Oh really?" Louis said with interest.

"One of my favourite bands," I lied. Harry smirked and reached for his phone.

"Which other bands do you like?" Louis asked.

"Um, loads of stuff," I floundered, my mind suddenly unable to remember what day it was, never mind the name of any cool bands.

"Like...?" Harry asked, looking down at his phone and swiping his screen.

My face was on fire. "The Wanted," I shot at him.

"Who?" Louis said, grinning.

Before I could think up a sassy reply, my phone lit up on the table and the opening bars of Kiss You echoed around the decking. Louis began laughing hysterically, and I snatched my phone up, my cheeks burning, thinking it was Maddie. I looked down at the screen, only to see Harry Styles on the screen, with an option to accept or reject the call.

"Excuse me, I've just got some loser from One Direction trying to call me," I quipped, as I looked up at Harry who was holding his phone in his hand and chuckling.

Louis laughed harder at my words, and Harry opened his mouth in shock as I rejected the call and the music finally stopped.

"Which loser from One Direction was it?" Louis asked, grinning.

"The one who looks like Frankie Cocozza," I shot at Harry, causing more laughter from Louis and Liam.

"Mate, she is ripping you," Louis teased Harry.

"Don't start what you can't finish," I said to Harry, poking my tongue out slightly, and giving him a soft smile so he'd know I was only playing, and he nudged my foot with his.

"So you are a big fan then?" Louis asked.

I sighed. "Well I can hardly deny it after that, can I?"

"You could try, but we wouldn't believe you," Liam teased.

"So how big are we talking?" Louis asked.

"Not the type to break into your hotel room and steal your underwear," I said, smiling fondly at the memory of saying those words to Harry on the night we met. I saw Harry smile knowingly, and felt a jolt in my stomach that he understood the reference.

"Do you know all the lyrics to all our songs?" Louis asked.

"Yes," I said.

"Favourite song?"

"Little White Lies," I answered immediately.

"Oh yeah," Louis said, nodding. I looked over at Harry, who shot a glance at Louis. "Harry said it was your favourite," Louis said, by way of explanation, as Harry cleared his throat nervously.

"Oh really?" I said, sitting up. "What else has Harry said about me then?"

"What hasn't he said?" Louis said, rolling his eyes and smiling. "You're all we hear about."

My stomach rolled over in a slow somersault as I took in Louis's words and Harry's embarrassed face. I vaguely remembered a conversation with Lou Teasdale along the same lines, but the details seemed to have been lost somewhere at the bottom of a champagne bottle.

"Hmm, care to elaborate?" I asked, wiggling my eyebrows.

"No, he doesn't," Harry interrupted, his cheeks a little pink.

Louis smirked and looked at me. "That's a conversation for later," he said.

"Later?" I said.

"Yeah, we're not going anywhere," Louis replied. "At least, not until tomorrow."

Oh my Styles. They were staying over tonight? This would definitely go down in history as the BEST DAY EVER.

"Hmm, ok, I'll hold you to that," I said, grinning over at Harry, who looked horrified at this thought.

I stood up and went inside to use the bathroom, feeling self conscious again at my lack of clothes as I walked away.

When I came back through the kitchen Harry was pulling ice creams out of the freezer, his hair pulled up in a mun. "You want one?" he offered. I walked over to him to see the choice, and he smiled at me and slipped his arm around my waist. My skin tingled from his touch, and I felt the familiar butterflies as he leaned down and softly pressed his lips against mine. My heart began to pound, and I slid my arms up around his neck. He tightened his grip around my waist.

"Don't mind me," came Louis' voice, and Harry and I broke apart smiling. Louis grinned at me and raised an eyebrow as he passed the kitchen on his way to the bathroom. "Whipped," he remarked.

I looked up at Harry who quickly turned away and busied himself with picking up the ice creams. I picked up a strawberry ice pop and pressed it against his bare stomach and he squirmed and laughed. "Get off," he said affectionately.

"You love it," I teased, turning around and flicking my hair at him as I walked back out the door.

"Yep," he said, so quietly that I wondered if I'd imagined it.

We got back on the sun loungers and I tore open my ice pop. I picked up my phone to check if Maddie had called, but there was nothing. I scrolled through Twitter for a bit, sucking on my ice pop, and had just put my phone down next to me when it pinged with a text.

From: Harry Styles: You're driving me wild with that ice lolly xxx

My eyes widened but I managed not to react. I kept my eyes on the screen as a smile spread across my face and I contemplated what to reply. The three boys were talking so I risked a glance at Harry, and saw him give me a sly sideways glance, and smirk.

I looked back at my phone again.

To: Harry Styles: Like what you see? ;) x

He reached for his phone as soon as he got the text. He quickly typed something back and set his phone down next to him as mine pinged.

From: Harry Styles: Party in my shorts again ;) xxx

I could barely contain my grin this time. Knowing he was watching, I slowly licked the ice pop while staring at my phone, then bit my lip. Out of the corner of my eye I saw him reach for his phone again, and as I stared at our message conversation another text came through.

From: Harry Styles: Stop that xxx

To: Harry Styles: Stop what? x

I put the ice pop in my mouth and sucked it.

From: Harry Styles: THAT! Seriously, I am so hot for you right now xxx

My stomach flipped over and my heart pounded. I licked my lips and played with a strand of my hair as I texted him back, not bothering to hide my grin.

To: Harry Styles: I'm just enjoying my lolly xxx

He smirked as he read that one, and took a deep breath.

From: Harry Styles: Do that to me later? ;) xxx

I dropped my phone on the deck and fumbled to pick it up, and heard Harry chuckle.

To: Harry Styles: Maybe. If you play your cards right xxx

"Get a room, you two," Louis said, looking back and forth between me and Harry, presumably noting the alternate pings from our phones, Harry's delighted grin and my flustered face.

A breeze blew Harry's ice cream wrapper off the table towards the pool and he got up from his chair, adjusting his shorts. He chased it across the decking to the pool, where it landed on the edge of the water. He crouched down and reached out to it. I silently sprang up off my sun lounger and lightly ran up behind him and gave him a shove.

He yelled as he plunged face first into the water and Liam and Louis laughed and applauded. He didn't waste any time in launching himself up the steps and out of the water this time, and ran full pelt towards me, dripping wet. I screamed, frozen to the spot, and he threw me over his shoulder in a fireman's lift.

"I'll pull your shorts down!" I threatened as he carried me to the deep end.

"Feel free," he said. "They've seen it all before." He gently pinched my inside thigh, tickling me, and I screamed again, this time with laughter, and kicked my legs trying to get his hand away. He reached the edge of the pool and threw me straight in.

I surfaced just in time to see Liam sneaking up behind Harry. I started to laugh as I realised what was about to happen, and Liam gave Harry a hard push between his shoulder blades. I squeezed my eyes shut and turned my face away as Harry toppled forward into the water with a yell for the second time in as many minutes.

"I thought you both needed to cool down," Liam said smugly, but his smugness was shortlived as Louis appeared behind him and pushed him in as well.

"Yessss, Tommo for the win," Louis gloated as Liam landed with a splash in between me and Harry.

"I'm not having that," Liam said to us, once Louis was safely back on his sun lounger out of earshot. "I declare war."

Things quietened down about 4pm. I was laying on my sun lounger, my fingers entwined with Harry's as he lay next to me, and was half listening to the boys' conversation and half dozing. My phone battery bleated pathetically at me, so I dragged myself up to take it inside and put it on charge.

I plugged it in on the kitchen worktop by the outside door, then headed to the bathroom. While I was in there I checked my reflection, and couldn't help admiring my tan. All this sunbathing and relaxing was doing wonders. I sauntered back through the kitchen and my stomach growled. It felt like ages since lunch, and I had been feeling delicate so hadn't eaten much anyway. As I walked through the back door I opened my mouth to suggest dinner, but saw Liam wave his arms in the air at me and put his finger to his lips, indicating to be quiet. I stopped and looked at him questioningly, without saying anything. He pointed at Harry and Louis laying still on the sun loungers, and then pointed over to the other side of the pool.

I was completely confused. It was hard enough trying not to stare at Liam's bare chest, but trying to decipher his hand signals was proving near impossible. I shrugged my shoulders at him and shook my head. He pointed wildly at Louis and Harry, who I realised must be dozing, and then mouthed "the hose!" at me, and pointed over at the hose hooked on the wall.

I finally understood. I nodded, grinned and gave him the thumbs up, and he grinned back. I tiptoed over to the hose, trying to hold in my laughter. I picked up the nozzle, which was one of those water-pistol type ones with a trigger, and silently turned the tap on. I didn't want to risk dragging the pipe across the patio and making any noise, so I squeezed one eye shut and pointed the nozzle across the decking at Harry's bare stomach. I sneaked a glance at Liam who was watching delightedly and filming it on his phone. I carefully squeezed the trigger, sending a torrent of ice cold water over onto Harry's torso. He shrieked like a girl and catapulted himself to his feet, trying to cover his stomach with his arms. Louis bolted upright in alarm at the commotion and Liam guffawed loudly.

"What the fuck.... stop! STOP!" Harry screamed, turning away from me, so I aimed the jet at his back instead, and he screamed louder. "That's fucking freezing!" he yelped. I released the trigger and shifted my aim at Louis, who was laughing hysterically at Harry's distress. Pointing at Louis' stomach, I squeezed the trigger again.

"Fuck!" Louis shouted, leaping to his feet too. "FUCK! Control your missus, Styles!"

Liam was cackling on his sun lounger as Louis took shelter behind Harry, and I attacked Harry again. He looked like he was fighting off a swarm of bees as he waved his arms helplessly, then turned and ran towards the pool and dived in head first. I turned the nozzle back on Louis again, who decided Harry had the right idea and followed suit, jumping in feet first. They stood in the pool side by side, panting and grinning. I let the nozzle slack at my side and sighed in satisfaction. Liam was howling with laughter, still videoing us.

A smile crept over my face. "I don't know what you're laughing at," I said, slowly lifting the nozzle for the final time.

Liam's face dropped. "No," he said.

I nodded, my smile widening.

"Oh come on," he pleaded. "It was my idea! We're on the same side!"

I shook my head. "Trust no one," I said, squeezing the trigger and sending a stream of water onto Liam's chest. He yelled (it was a lot more manly than Harry's and Louis' squeals), threw his phone on the table and sprinted across the decking, dive bombing into the pool between his friends. I backed up to the kitchen door and reached in to grab my phone, praying the battery would have enough charge.

Liam surfaced and the three of them stood in a line, chest deep, hair dripping wet, looking up at me. I snapped a couple of pictures of them, then began recording as I paced up and down the edge of the pool chuckling.

"Now, you three stooges can be my bitches," I declared, firing a jet of water at Harry's head.

"I can't believe we've been outsmarted by a girl," Louis complained to the other two as Harry shook the water out of his hair.

"I can't believe she turned on me!" Liam protested.

"Sorry Liam," I said. "All's fair in love and war." I sent a stream of water at his neck.

"Love?" Harry repeated, and my stomach backflipped.

I aimed another squirt at Harry, hitting him squarely in the chest, and he smiled up at me.

"You are so whipped, boy," Louis said again to Harry, so I shot water at the top of Louis' head.

"Sorry not sorry," I grinned.

"LADS!" Louis shouted. "Come on! We need to take back control!"

"I'm doing it," Harry said, hauling himself out of the water before I realised what was happening.

"Go on, Hazza," Louis cheered.

Harry wrenched the nozzle from my grip and threw it away out of reach. I knew the game was up, so I tossed my phone on the table next to Liam's as Harry put his cold wet hands on my waist.

"Play nicely," I teased.

He laughed incredulously. "Play nicely?!" he echoed. "After what you've just done?"

"Remember what I said earlier about playing your cards right," I murmured, looking him deep in the eyes and biting my lip.

His face was inches from mine, and water was dripping from his hair onto my cheek. He paused for a moment, then shook his head wordlessly and kissed me on the lips.

Behind us Louis shook his head in disbelief. "Fucking whipped."
