Chapter 1- Prove Yourself To Me

Yeah, not really excited about it, but the paycheck is way better than kindergarten and there's no crying kids,” He replied casually.

There's hormonal whiny high school brats they my act up like they're babies?” I pointed out.

Ignorance is a bliss, I'll ignore them, they'll ignore me. Easy job, easy pay,” He shrugged.

Never fail to amuse me Mr. O'Brien,” I chuckled at him. “And age is treating you well,”

I'm not that old,” He grimaced “The last time you saw me I was 22,”

You're THIRTY?”

Shhh!! Don't say it out loud!” Mr. O'Brien groaned.

Sorry, sorry,” I laughed “Well, if it makes you feel any better, you look like you're 25,”

Why thank you Niall,” Mr. O'Brien smiled, puffing out his chest a tad.

Are you still a virgin, Mr. O'Brien?” I asked nonchalantly.

(Niall's P.O.V)

“Detention on the first day?!” Louis snapped as we walked out of the school building. He had just finished his football practice an hour ago

“You were pretty good today at practice,” I complimented, trying to change the subject.

“Dad, and Papa are going to kill me!” He continued, ignoring what I have just said completely.

“I was the one who got detention” I reasoned.

“Ugh, I thought Harry was suppose to be looking after you!” He yelled in frustration as we walked through the slightly vacant parking lot. “It was just a simple task, 'Look after Nialler'. It wasn't that hard,”

“Lou, I really don't understand why are so upset about this. You and Haz used to get detention too. Not always but you have,”

“Papa is going to kill me,” He muttered under his breath, but loud enough for me to hear.

“Again, I said, I was the one one who got detention, not you,” I said in an annoyed tone. “Plus, how would I know that asking the new teacher if he was a virgin or not might offend him! He used to be open about it!”

“You don't understand, Nialler,” Louis sigh “You never do,”

To say that I was hurt,..couldn't be truer.

“Right. I don't understand. Because I'm the youngest and apparently, the dumbest,” I said, creating an awkward silence between us. I didn't mean to snap at him, I mean it's Louis for heaven sakes. He's my big brother and I piratically worships the ground he walks on. But them treating me like a baby has got to stop at some point. Upon hearing what I have just said, Louis stopped in his track, but I continued on.

“Ni? Nialler?!” Louis catch up with me after a few seconds. I ignored him and kept on walking, because I knew that I would cave in the moment he said his sorry. The next thing I knew was, louis grabbed my wrist and spun me around, causing me to crash against his hard chest.

Yeah,..... he's forgiven.

“I'm sorry okay? I didn't mean to say that, hell, I don't even mean it,” Louis mumbled, sounded extremely exhausted. “It's not what you did, you're just perfect,”

“I'm gonna take a blind shot here,......it's Papa isn't it?” I said as I hugged my slightly smelly and sweaty brother.

“No,....?”

“Look Lou, you have to stop this,” I said, pulling away from the hug.

“Stop what? I-I'm not-”

“Stop trying to,...prove yourself to him. He loves you, so much. You guys used to be so close but since last summer,...”

It wasn't something new that I've picked up on. Papa is a huge idol to Louis; growing up, he wanted to do everything Papa said. From fishing, kick-boxing, track and especially football. Papa is always the one supporting him, going to every practice, cheering from him and helping him practice. You could practically see the way Louis lights up when ever they practiced together and whenever Papa said he was proud of him. But last year, Louis was so caught up in the extra co-curricular competitions, his grades began to drop. That's when everything changed between Papa and Louis. Papa wanted Louis to get his grade back up, and Louis wanted to spent more time doing outdoor activity with Papa. But Louis misunderstood it as Papa think he wasn't good enough. Not good enough as an athlete, not good enough as a student, not good enough as a brother and most importantly, not good enough as his son. Since that day, Louis had bee pushing himself to the limit. Trying to prove himself to Papa. Harry might have not noticed it, but Dad and I did.

“I'm not trying to prove myself to him,” Louis replied, looking anywhere but me.

“I know that you-”

“I would really like,...if we don't talk about this. Let's go home yeah?” Louis said, putting on the biggest smile he could muster up, but is eyes were watering up a bit.

I know that I will cross the line if I continued on, so I decided to drop. I will be there if he needs me, because he didn't have to prove anything to me.

“Fine,...let's go home,”

I didn't know if Louis was looking for comfort or something, but throughout the walk home, he didn't let go of my hands, much to my dismay, as we talked and joked around. I looked like a small kid being dragged by his older brother from kindergarten. I really wish he would stop trying so hard and realize how great he is.

And how lucky it is to be him.

(Louis' P.O.V)

I didn't want to look weak in front of my brothers.

Especially Niall.

“You were suppose to be looking after him! Keep him out of trouble!” Papa roared. Once we got home, with the news of Niall getting a detention on his first day of high school, Papa had called for a family meeting after a very silence dinner. We all gathered in the living room, with Papa pacing around the room restlessly as the rest of us sat on the sofa and recliner, waiting for him to start.

“Papa, it wasn't Lou's fault-” Nail said, losing his patience.

“Stop talking Ni,” Papa cuts him off, still glaring at me. I know that look all to well by now, the look of disappointment. He was right though, it was such a simple task, and I failed. Dad was silence the whole time, looking at me sympathetically.

“I might have to make you quit your football team this year,” Papa announced.

“No!!” Niall and I yell in unison.

“Y-You can't do that,...that-that wasn't what we agreed on!” I reasoned. He can't take football from me. It's my passion to play and might be the only way for me to prove myself to him.

“It's making you forget about your responsibilities on your brothers Lou. You've put him second on your list,” Papa countered.

“Papa, it was one detention, one stupid mistake I MADE,” Niall backed me up. It was suppose to make me feel better, knowing he had my back but instead, it made me look weak, not fit to be a big brother for having my baby brother stand up for me.

“Stay out of this Ni,” Papa warned.

“But-”

“Niall go to your room!” Papa glared at him. With that, Niall stormed out of the living room, followed by Harry. I could only look at the disaster I have caused, and realize that I have to live with the consequence.

“So it's decided then, you're going to quit-”

“You're not going to quit the football team Lou,” Dad spoke up for the first time, cutting Papa off “We'll figure this out later once I've talked to Papa okay? You can go now,”

***

I laid on my bed wide awake that night, looking at the stars through the skylight right above my head as a few drops of tears washed my cheeks. I love my Papa so much, but I'm such a disappointment to him. I miss spending time with him, seeing him smiling proudly and praising me. The days when Papa would come home early so that we could practice on my football skills were ones that I could never forget. We always had a blast, and for once, I really believed that I was his favorite.

I was shaken out of my thoughts when my bedroom door slowly opened up. The moment when a tuft of blonde hair appeared through the door crack, I knew it was Niall. I quickly wiped my cheeks, and luckily, it was dark so chances of Niall seeing the tear tracks on my cheeks were close to zero percent. Crying in front of your little brother is a sign of weakness.

“Lou? Are you asleep?” He whispered.

“Yes, I am,” I replied, smirking.

“Ha. Ha. Very funny,...” Niall replied as he entered my room, closing the door behind him. He tip-toed toward my bed, lifted up the duvet and joined me.

“What's up Ni?” I asked in my Bugs Bunny voice.

“I'm sorry,” was all Niall answered as he buried his face on my side and instinctively, I wrapped my arms around him.

“What are you sorry for bub?” I chuckled, even though I already knew the answer.

“For getting you and Haz in trouble,”

“It wasn't your fault,..it was my job to look after you,”

“Papa can't make you quit football,” Niall sighed “I won't let him,”

“Whoop! Whoop! Ring the bell 'cause we got ourselves a rebel in the house!” I joked.

“I'm serious Lou!” Niall whined, but still laughed.

“He's right though Niall....”

“I love Papa, Lou, but nothing he said earlier was true. I saw you practiced today and you were amazing. The best, sassiest and bossiest yet coordinated captain I've ever seen. I'm proud to yell and scream that that's my brother, the captain, on the field, shaking his big ass,”

“Despite the choice of vocabularies, that is the coolest compliment I've heard,” Louis chuckled feeling a little bit better. “Thanks Nialler,”

“No problemo big brother,” Niall said before yawning like a baby hippo. “M'too lazy to walk back to my room so, Good Night Lou,”

“Nigh Nialler,”

You're the best.

(Liam's P.O.V)

“I messed up didn't I?” Zayn asked as I card my fingers through his soft black hair. It's amazing how it managed to stay pitch black after all these years without turning gray. We were spooning on bed, with his bare back on my naked chest. “I messed up,...Tell me I messed up Li,”

“But you didn't,” I replied, kissing his head softly.

“I-I was trying to help, but instead, I'm pushing him away. Why can't he see that I-I-I just want to help him,” Zayn choked on his words. “I didn't mean to push him away,”

“I know that you're worried about his academic results Zee, but you have to believe in him,”

“I just didn't want him end up like I do if you didn't come along,” Zayn mumbled, kissing the back of my hand. “I want him to be an example for his brothers-”

“Then let him continue playing football,” I interjected.

“What? How is that going to help him improve his grades?”

“It won't,...but it will help rekindle your relationship with him. You might not have noticed it Zayn, but Louis is desperately trying to get your approval, want to prove to you that he's good enough for you,”

“W-What?”

“You might not have noticed it, but it's true. He's been doing extra practice, extra credit work, and studying at night. And I know that he's doing all this not by his own choice. He's doing it to prove himself to you,”

“B-But why? I don't want him to prove himself to me,...I-I couldn't ask for a better son then him,”

“Well, he doesn't know that. He misunderstood your action of not supporting him in sports as a sign that you think that he's not good enough anymore. You know how he liked to compares himself with Ni and Haz, even though he won't admit it,”

“Oh God,...oh God,...I-I messed up. I didn't-Fuck, I'm such a screw up. Fuck, Lou deserves a better father,” Zayn was now full on crying.

“Zee,..Zee, look at me,” I said as I tuned him around. “I know that you've been very hard on him. Parenting isn't easy, I know, but you are not a screw up. And you have been an amazing father towards Louis. You can fix this Zee, it's not too late,”

***

It was during dinner the next day when Zayn had prepared a speech to apologize to Louis for overreacting and being so hard on him. He even took the courtesy of memorizing a small speech he written at work. But, to much of out dismay, Louis called as said that he was having dinner with his football team. It hurts me to see those two beating themselves up over nothing. Zayn was sitting on his spot on the dining table as Haz and Ni helped me set the table. It was raining cats and dogs outside and the wind was blowing furiously, howling like a wolf. However, things did turned better when Zayn received a phone call from Hayley, one of the nurse working in their school.

Hey Zee!” Hayley greeted Zayn in her usually cheery voice.

“Hayley, hi!” Zayn replied, trying to sound as happy as possible, putting her on speaker so that I could hear her too.

Yeah,..I was wondering, I just left the school, and I saw Louis in nothing but a t-shirt and a pair basketball gyms at the school field, playing football......,”

“What?! Is he there alone?”

Yeah,...I just thought I should tell you-”

“Thank you Hayley! Thank you so much!” Zayn cuts her off, with a worried expression on his face.

“Oh you're welcome hun. Goodbye!”

“I'll go get him,” Zayn said once he ended the call. He swiftly got out of his seat and ran to grab his coat and two raincoats.

“They're dramatic when they want to be. It's cute,” Niall chuckled, already sensing that everything was going to be okay.

“Tell me about it,” I added.

(Zayn's P.O.V)

Louis, Louis, Louis,...

It was all I could think off as I drove over the speed-limit to get to the school. This has got to stop. I don't want Louis to think that he's not good enough as a son to me. He had always made me proud, and still do. He grew up much better than I expected, and never fails to surprise me with his achievement. I was just so worried when I realize his grades were dropping, that somehow lead me to push him away. I miss those moments where we would practice together, talk about sports after it, and going to his games and competitions. He was such a good sport and a very high spirited kids. He was the perfect big brother figure, but still, I was asking more out of him. I should have not put that sort of pressure on him, no matter what the reason was. He was doing so brilliant, and I had to ruin it for him.

After parking my car nearest to the field, I burst out of the car and into the pouring rain, searching for my son. It was absolutely freezing, and the rain was blocking my vision. I ran in the middle of the football field before detecting a white silhouette in front of the goalpost. He was kicking a few balls into the goalpost while screaming angrily.

“Lou?! What are you doing?” I had to yell a bit over the sound of the rain once I reached him. I draped the other raincoat that I brought along over him and brought his shivering body closer to mine. I noticed that his skin was extremely pale and his lips were blue.

“P-P-Papa?” Louis eyes widened in surprise.

“What are you doing? Come on,..let's go home,”

“B-But I-I have to practice,...”

“No! No more of this!” I yelled angrily.

“I-I don't want to quit football P-Papa!” Louis retorted, struggling to get out of my grasp. “I-I wa-want to prove to you t-that I can do-do it! I c-can!”

“Louis,..Lou,..stop. Listen to me,” I said gently, grabbing his shivering face. “I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. You don't have to prove yourself to me and I don't want you too. I've been a fool Lou. I already have the best son in the world, and he is standing right in front of me. I'm sorry that I pushed you away, thinking that it might help you. I'm a very screwed up father that doesn't deserve an amazing son like you but somehow, I still do. Don't ever for once think that you're not good enough to be my son, because in reality, you're too good to be true,”

And that is all I need to say before Louis was hugging me back, crying like a little boy, just like he used to on his first football match when he was seven.
