"How the fuck could you keep that from me?"
Elijah looks over to me, surprised I have broken the near two hours of silence as the car has been filled with a dreaded silence as my heart aches. My head leaning against the window, I watch the trees pass by as the car drives further into the green fields as the road becomes loose gravel. With every bump in the road, I can feel the pains in my stomach sharply jolt at my insides as my cheeks are dried with my salty tears. For the past two hours my mind has been numb, those navy eyes flashing through my mind as I cannot understand why fate could be so unfair and cruel to me.
"I was informed by the witch we are meeting, she told me just before you took off."
"Bullshit," I snap, glaring at Elijah as I want to rip out my hair, to scream, to destroy the world Zion build for himself with power and wealth. "You have known longer than that, Elijah, men like you always keep something from people like me."
"People like you?"
"People like me or like Sybil. People who are seen as week compared to this ego you have built around yourself of some powerful alpha male who only needs a shy and innocent woman for your ego to be built up. People like Sybil and me who were consumed in a world unlike what we could have expected to be swept into without a say. Nixon did the same thing until he realized I was a force worth reckoning. To you, Elijah, you still see me as innocent. Besides, being a human, a woman, a mother, and thrown into the position of Alpha of Crimson Lock, all those things seem to make you see me as someone who only needs to know big plot twists when you think it is time," I inform, my voice stern as I can feel my fists clench, my nails digging into the palm of my hands as I want to do nothing but land a fist into his clenched jaw. "The Alpha of Crimson Lock is a human female...that is quite the news to you and you see that as a chance to use me in this battle."
"You want to be in this war," Elijah points out.
"I know that. I want to be in this war, do not get me wrong, because I want to see the world Zion created crumble before his eyes, but you still do not see that as enough reason to inform me of news when you hear it too." I know what Elijah plans here, I know that he thinks one of us will not make it out of this war, either by fate or by our own undoing. If Elijah does not come to see me as a force to reckon with, then he may one day turn on me and try to establish the new government for himself. Hell, he can take control of organizing the new government if we win, setting in stone laws and territories, for I would rather be at home with my daughter, but Elijah does not believe this.
Silence floods the car again as I spot a mansion covered by a thick layer of trees, the house looking old as it seems more like a small castle than regular big house. "I should have you know, Lily, that Zion used the company of Fiona to bring Sybil back."
The witch who did something I never thought possible brought back the lover of a man I want dead. It is unfair, for someone who did not deserve the life of his lover to return back to him...for him to have her back after everything he did to me, to Nixon, to even his wife, and to his kingdom. Could she bring Nixon back? No doubt Zion paid a price too high for me to offer the witch.
"How did he do it?" I ask, my voice scratchy as I want to let go of my emotions, to not feel this pain in my heart that the news has caused me to feel.
Facing me, Elijah looks into my shallow eyes, knowing that the pain I feel right now will not go away...perhaps ever. "The darkest form of magic possible. Fiona's coven has been known for their use of dark magic and the curse Zion's ancestors placed on them centuries ago. Fiona knocked on the devil's door and stole Sybil's soul back, Zion promising Fiona to lift the curse."
"And he did not lift the curse. I assume that is why she is willing to work with us?" Elijah nods in response, the car pulling into the driveway. "And where are Zion and Sybil now?"
"Europe somewhere. Keeping themselves safe for the minute news breaks that Sybil is alive, many will come after them."
Come after them? Why would people go after a broken past king and his recently resurrected wife? "Why would people want to come after them?"
As we park before the house, Elijah instructs the driver to get our bags. Looking to the outdoors, a woman dressed in black leather and a look to her of someone not to mess with, her eyes are black, the veins upon her flesh a dark red as they can be traced across her exposed flesh. "Those who are brought back from the dead are seen as unholy, hunters will be after her to kill as she has darkness running through her blood. Her blood can be then used for an endless amount of spells, vampires could use it to cure going mad in the sunlight, werewolves can use it to touch silver, elves could use it to once again forge ancient weapons, dwarfs can use it to guide their mining to the riches they seek, dragon riders could use it to once again breed their dragons, and more uses. Zion will now do anything to protect her and we can use that to our abilities."
"And how do we get to them?"
Opening the door, Elijah looks to Fiona, the woman who looks as if her flesh has turned to stone, all cracked and turning grey if part of the red veins. "Zion turned her into that, unwilling to lift the curse he promised to do, causing Fiona's soul to slowly break apart. Her coven is cursed so that the more they use their magic, the more they fall apart and begin to lose their physical body and wilt away. Fiona has sworn that her last bit of magic left will be to bring Zion to his death." So there are three of us now who want the past king dead and to personally do the act.
"It's not fair you know," I whisper, afraid to break down and cry. "For Zion to use people for his ways and to bring back the woman he made his wife. Yet for me, I hold no power over someone who could ever come close to bringing back Nixon."
"It's the way life works, Lily, it is not natural to bring back a deceased loved one."
"I know," I cry, holding in a sob. "But I would give everything to bring Nixon back, but I can never do that. All I have of him is his pack and our daughter. It is not enough." Terrance was right, nothing will ever be enough to bring Nixon back and I find the person I once was slipping away. I will do everything I can to make sure Zion dies at the end of all things and I do not care if I go down with him into the depths of hell.
We exit the car and walk over to the witch who stands in the doorway, those onyx eyes fixed on me as I can feel the darkness around Fiona. Her hair is braided back, turning white as her hair has turned thin, her slender body almost turned to skin and bone, and her right hand constantly flinching with every second. I wonder what she looked like before Zion turned her entire life upside down. The way she watches me makes me wonder what she has planned, the way she looks at me with a peculiar mischief in her eyes. Elijah greets Fiona with a handshake, informing her that we do not have long to stay here. "Who is the human?"
"Alpha Lily Maxwell," Elijah informs. Did he not tell her I was tagging along on this journey.
"I was expecting a werewolf, not a human." Fiona stares me down, her shadow falling over me. "You must have made one hell of an impression on Nixon Maxwell. That fucker knew his way around any regulation or law." So she knew of my husband, as I would expect, but did she ever meet him?
"Did you ever meet him?" I ask, curious as to if my husband had ever met with any witches to make anything happen which he would write in that book.
Shaking her head, Fiona opens up the front door for us. "I knew Lillian, she was once a friend before we ranted to Zion on my location. Glad he killed her, less effort for me to fly over to your country and slaughter her and use her organs for spells." I had always thought the stories of witches using body parts for spells and potions was just something made up to make children fear witches. I guess I was wrong. "Her heart would have made for an excellent potion, for she had two mates, that is a rare condition." A condition to have two mates? Saying it like that makes me wonder if she sees mates to be some burden you get diagnosed with rather than something wonderful the werewolf community makes it to be. "Come on inside, there is a storm headed our way."
Looking over my shoulder as we enter into the house, I look to see only a few clouds in the sky over the green fields. A storm? As I enter into the house and the door shuts behind us, Fiona leads us to the living room, the curtains pulled shut a candles whose wax has melted onto the tables to keep them glued down are the only source of light. "So, what do you want from me exactly, Elijah and Lily?"
"Is it not obvious?" I remark, taking my seat across from Fiona as she pulls out a small notebook and a pen.
"I like to get the full story, Alpha, for what you propose here today has the ability to change not just werewolf history, but supernatural history. My ancestors used to ride on the backs of werewolves into battle. Witches were once elite society with elves, our magic respected and deemed a gift from the gods. Times changed when the first empire formed of werewolves and Zion's ancestors called us in for help, but a few of my ancestors betrayed them. For centuries my coven and I have been damned to hell to suffer an infinity of torture upon a burning wheel as ravens pluck at our flesh. Zion's ancestors ran the first empire and placed many under control and harsh conditions. What we decide here today could change the misery many supernaturals are still facing due to that bastard's bloodline." Fiona's eyes swirl with red in the onyx orbs, her anger growing as I can understand her hate from him is stronger than my own. I once believed that my hate for him only branched out into Crimson Lock and a few other werewolves Zion had wronged, but there is an entire history behind this now. "In that Empire's power, some supernaturals became so scared of what could happen that they called on some of my long dead sisters to create realms lost from this world, cloaked in strong magic, to hide them away from the empire and humankind. I used to think these hidden realms held cowards of past great wars, but they were smart to escape into a land outside of time, their remembrance fading away. Even the gods and goddesses fled to these realms. The Moon Goddess even rushed off into one of these realms."
Fiona pauses, looking to me as she cocks her head to the side. "You see, Alpha Maxwell, everyone in this world and other worlds has been affected by the reign of Zion's ancestors and I want to make sure that what you two have planned is something which will change history for the good."
I understand Fiona, how she wants to make sure using the last bit of magic she has left that it is for a worthy cause. "Zion brought Sybil back from the dead, that will stir up hunts for her," I begin, taking matters into my own hands as Elijah is surprised that I have decided to speak first. "When people hear of what Zion has done, those who still pray to the gods and the Priestesses will see him as unworthy of his royal blood and will demand a trial for going against natural laws of death. The Priestesses will declare Zion as a man who abused his power over witches his family cursed and they will no doubt find him guilty. When he is called for a trial, he will either run with Sybil which will make him an enemy of the kingdom, or he will let down his guard and leave Sybil alone in a world where expert hunters are searching for her."
"Do you want Sybil dead?" Fiona interrupts, curious as she leans forward in her seat. "Her death means her blood and organs could be used to bring back the man Zion took from you. The father of your child would be back, your husband would be by your side again, and your heartbreak would be gone."
Would I use her to bring Nixon back? Perhaps I could, for my daughter would have her father, I would have my husband, and Crimson Lock would regain its Alpha. Nixon left that night knowing he would die...he had accepted his fate the moment he left his wedding ring on the nightstand. I would have that power available if I took Sybil's life, but would Nixon want that. He died and knew he would, he accepted the realty he knew would happen, but he did it knowing that I would lead Crimson Lock well and would raise our daughter. He left knowing everything would be alright. "I would give anything to get him back," I reply, "but he knew he was going to die that night, he died knowing I would lead our pack to greatness and give the world to our daughter. He was at peace when he died and for that, I believe bringing him back would do more harm than good."
A smile tugs at the witch's lips, her posture relaxed as she leans back. "Someone is wiser than Zion himself. Besides, Sybil never really came back, it was just the shell of her. She could hardly remember their life together. If anything, Zion would be more worried about her hanging herself than people slaughtering her." So Sybil is willing to take her own life? "She never came back, she still feels as if she does not belong to walk along the living. She was at peace in the afterlife and Zion disrupted that."
"So how is he keeping her will to live flourishing?" Elijah asks.
"Oh, you two are going to love this news." Fiona gets to her feet, grabbing from the table a black candle with a green flame. Smiling, she softly blows at the flame, the flame not being blown out, but it drifts away from the candle, the fire creating figures as I can see a pregnant woman, cradling her bump as she glances at something in the distance. "Zion decided to knock her up, well, they did not mean for it to happen. They had an argument and it somehow turns into lust which resulted in a surprise pregnancy." So Zion gets a second shot at his family. "Believe me, Sybil does not want the child. Last I saw them she told me the moment her child is born, she wants me to give it away to someone with no way for Zion to trace their child. The second I do this, she has asked me to send her empty soul back to the afterlife."
So bringing someone back from the dead is not as romantic as I would have expect it to be?
"Now, please continue your little plan, Alpha."
"With Zion either on the run or returning for his trial, all eyes will be on him with hatred. With him either staying away from the kingdom or held down in a cell in the kingdom, we have restricted his power and can make a move onto the palace. The warriors of my pack have agreed to join, rogues have offered us their service, and if your coven decides to help, then we have enough power to attack the palace and destroy the government which was once in place. We burn the books and laws, destroy the Senate chamber, melt the crown down, and strip the palace of its symbol of authority as we immediately take action to form a new government."
"And when packs begin to revolt?"
"The day before we attack we send copies of Zion's black book to every Alpha and a proclamation for the new government where Alphas will have power to determine laws rather than a King who only seeks more power. If they sign, their Alpha is sent for a meeting to make the new government, and if they decline, we attack," Elijah explains. "And we both know that destroying the palace is just the beginning to a war, but it is a start, a revolution which no one has been willing to take on."
"And what happens to Zion?" Fiona asks. "I assume each one of us wants him dead by our own doing."
"Whoever survives the attack will do the deed. If we all survive, we do it together. Hell, we will hang him or send him in front of a firing squad if we must, but we see his downfall."
"And the curse upon my coven?" Fiona asks. That was the reason why she agreed to bring Sybil back, for Zion to lift the curse, but he never did and she wants the curse lifted.
"You need the blood of Zion's line to be placed upon the stone where the curse was engraved. Zion will be reluctant to sign it and place his blood on the stone, but with Sybil being pregnant, she carries his bloodline with their child. She carries the bloodline so she can lift the curse. If you make a deal with her to lift the curse for you to send her back to her eternal sleep, she will be more than willing once her child is born," Elijah proposes as I know this entire plan sounds crazy.
As Fiona blows out the candle and looks to me, I speak up. "I know this is madness, this plan to take down a government which has been in place for centuries and to murder the man who has caused you and your coven so much pain. But this is the first time a major movement has been gathered and ready to move, we just need your help."
"I would never have guessed in all my years for a human Alpha to come to me with this plan," Fiona comments, laughing a bit as she crosses her arms. "But it is a sign that times are changing and a step towards a new world needs to be made. You have my help, but know that my magic is nearing the end of its days." She pauses, looking to Elijah and me as she takes in a deep breath. "Count my coven in."
