Seabound: Chapter 5 - The Wrath of Kalmaar

Nya eyes flutter open, as a fog clouds her vision. Her head ached, her vision was a bit fuzzy, everything hurt. She puts a hand to her head, and sees that her wrists were cuffed to something. She pulls at it hard, but the cuffs wouldn't loosen. She huffs, and looks behind her.

Her mother Maya was cuffed and unconscious. The cuffs appeared to be linking the mother and daughter together. Nya tugs at her right arm to wake her up, and it worked. "Mom? Mom, are you okay?"

Maya groans as she slowly comes to her senses. "What happened? Where are we?"

Nya looks around at their surroundings, and confirmed it to be the same place they were in a few hours ago. "The Temple of Wojira."

"Worjira?" Maya echoes. "Wojira's a myth about a giant sea serpent."

Nya shakes her head. "It's not a myth. On our last adventure, we found proof. We found an ancient amulet on an island. The Storm Amulet. It belonged to Wojira. It was being protected by the Keepers of the—" Her eyes turn to the squid that attacked them earlier, and she gasps when he was coming towards them.

"Go on, pray tell. About these "Keepers", about the Storm Amulet," Nya narrows her eyes at the squid, preferring to keep her mouth shut. "I am Prince Kalmaar, son of Trimaar, heir to the throne of Merlopia, rightful ruler of the Endless Sea, and I assure you, not someone to be trifled with." The squid prince Kalmaar says in a threatening tone.

"Well, it's nice to meet you!" Maya says, breaking their stare-off, much to Nya's bafflement.

"Don't be nice to him, Mom! He's the one who blasted us in the back!"

"I'm sure that was just a tiny misunderstanding," Maya shrugs. "We are trespassing in his temple."

"Mom! He's evil!" Nya reasons with her.

"Nya! He can hear you!" Maya hisses.

"SILENCE!" He yells at the mother and daughter loudly, his voice booming throughout the entire temple. "BOTH OF YOU!" He exhales softly, and tries to regain his composure to the best of his ability. "Tell me the location of this island, and I will spare your lives."

"What island?" Nya says, deciding to play dumb.

"The Island of the Keepers!"

"Keepers of what?" She shrugs. Kalmaar huffs with frustration.

"The Storm Amulet! T-The amulet you were just—!" He stops trying to explain when he sees the Water Ninja put on the smuggest smile he had ever seen in his entire life. "I will ask one last time. Where is the island?!"

"Save your breath, Calamari. I'm not telling you anything!"

The prince growls and whips around, aiming his trident directly at her with the intention to kill her on-site. "That's Kalmaar!" She widens her eyes when she sees the trident. Suddenly, someone appears behind him and startles him.

"My prince!" Kalmaar yelps, and his tridents blasts at the top of the pillar, causing large debris to fall down. He, Maya and Nya brace themselves for a moment, before settling down. He glares at the green Maaray guard. "Forgive me, my lord. Did I startle you?"

Kalmaar rolls his eyes and turns to face him. "Of course not. What do you want, Gripe?"

"The King requests your presence in the palace. At once!" Gripe replies to him. Kalmaar sighs, wondering what his father, the King of Merlopia, wanted from him this time. If anything, it couldn't be good.

"Oh, saved by my meddling father," He turns towards Nya and Maya, with a menacing glance. "I look forward to continuing our discussion when I return." Nya glares at the prince as he and his servant walk away from them, before trying to tug at her restraints once more.

"Nya! Nya, come in! Nya!" Katarina yells urgently through Nya and Maya's comms. All that responded back to her was static. She winces and turns off the submarine's communications.

"How much air supply do they have?" Lloyd asks his adoptive sister worriedly.

"At this depth, one hour." She replies.

"One hour? We have to help them!" Jay swiftly turns around and runs towards the doors that would lead them downstairs. His hands crackle with his Elemental powers. "We have to get this sub fixed and go after them! I-I'm going to zap the battery!"

Zane shakes his head. "That would be exceedingly dangerous. The engine room is partially flooded. Even if you could survive it, a charge of that magnitude will be fatal."

"We don't have a choice!" Jay protests. The door opens, and he was about to take a step when Katarina stops him.

"Wait!" Jay turns around to face her. "There is one way I can think of. I can reroute power from life support and auxiliary. But I do not know if it will be enough to jumpstart the battery."

"I don't think we have anything to lose, Kat." Lloyd says. She nods and quickly gets to work. The doors close in front of Jay, who sighs and allows the plan to happen.

Kalmaar finally arrives back at the palace, his home, and he walks inside the throne room. Gripe dutifully waits outside for Kalmaar's return, as Kalmaar walks towards the throne where his father and another person were.

Both the king, whose name was Trimaar, and another person named Benthomaar face him. The King was much taller than his firstborne son, wearing only gold-copper shoulder pads, chest armor and a belt with the Merlopian symbol. An elegant crown sat upon his head, with ruby gems and the Merlopian symbol in the center.

Benthomaar was clad with chest armor that only covered one side of his chest, with soft copper leather scales underneath the gold plating to make it comfortable for him. There were chains that looped around his left arm, being connected with the Merlopian symbol, which covered the other side of his chest, along with short pants that resembled scales and were also protected by gold plating armor. His pointed webbed ears had small gold piercings, his right ear with a small gold chain piercing that went from the tip of his ear to the earlobe.

There was even a quiver behind his back full of gold arrows. His skin was that of a shark's, a dull blueish-grey, with black and dark blue marking all over his body and shark tail. There were these swirl-like markings on his cheeks, and his hair was slicked back with a short braid to accomadate his slightly long hair. His body, especially his chest, showed off his strong muscular physique.

When Benthomaar turned around, he smiles at Kalmaar, showing his sharp teeth. "Brother!"

"Adopted brother," Kalmaar growls under his breath. "So good to see you, Bentho! And you, Father. What brings us together this fine tide?"

"Tell me the rumors aren't true, son." The King says to his son.

"What rumors are those?" Kalmaar says innocently.

"Rumors of another sunken surface vessel. Tell me you're not sinking ships again to placate your senseless hatred of the surface dwellers?"

Kalmaar feigns a surprised gasp. "Another sinking? How tragic! It was not I, I swear it." Benthomaar turns around to face his adopted father.

"See, father? I told you he didn't. Sometimes their ships just sink on their own," He looks down at the floor with a solemn expresion. "It's very sad."

Trimaar nods at Benthomaar with a soft smile, but it fades when he faces Kalmaar. "How does a vessel sink when the seas are calm? When there is no storm in sight?"

"They're so poorly built. How could they not?" Kalmaar leans back on his trident and examines his gloved claw. "I fear we're not dealing with a very intelligent species."

"If I find out you are lying, I will be greatly displeased."

Kalmaar stands back up and narrows his eyes at his father. "Hmm, wouldn't want that." Trimaar points the way out.

"You may go, son." When Kalmaar turns around and makes his leave, he scowls under his breath. The doors slam open, catching a patient Gripe's attention immediately. He turns around to face the squid prince.

"If my father had any pride at all, any dignity, he'd thank me for sinking their ships!" Kalmaar screams.

"What if he finds out you were lying?" Gripe questions him.

"He won't," An evil smirk comes across his face. "Because there will be no evidence. Make them talk! Then get rid of them!" Gripe bows before His Majesty.

"As you command." The commander of the Merlopian army says, and walks towards the castle's main hangar bay to head towards the temple.

"We have to get -!" Nya pulls at the restraints again with extertion. "-out of here!" She slumps against the pillar, stewing with frustration, as her mother looks up at the pillar.

"One time, when I was the Master of Water, your father and I were handcuffed to a pole, and we were able to get loose by climbing over the top." Maya explains. Nya huffs.

"Mom, that would never—" Nya looks up as she talks, and notices that the top of the pillar was destroyed when Kalmaar was startled by Gripe. Okay, maybe her mother's plan will work...

"Uh, huh. Okay. Well, I guess we could try it. At the same time." Maya nods. They both stand up and plant their feet on the pillar. They slowly walk up the pillar together. "One, two, three! Again."

As they walk up, Maya smiles. "It's working."

Nya nods. "One, two, three! One, two, three!" They were almost there, just a few more steps.

"Almost...there!" Suddenly, Maya loses her footing, causing her to fall. Luckily, her daughter was able to pull at the restraints to prevent her mother from falling down any further. Her mother breathes a sigh of relief. "Sorry I slipped. I've got it now."

"Okay!" Nya exhales roughly. They take the last few steps up the pillar. "One, two, three!" They finally make it the top, and the mother and daughter turn around to face each other. They lift their arms into the air at the same time. "And jump!"

They make the jump, and were finally able to land back down. They cheer victoriously. "We did it!" Maya and Nya high-five each other, and they look down at their cuffs.

"Now to get rid of these."

"Well, one time, when I was the Master of Water—" Maya starts off, making Nya roll her eyes with false annoyance. Suddenly, Gripe and two Maaray guards rush in to the temple, holding out their charged-up tridents at them. Nya and Maya gasp.

"The prisoners are escaping! Attack!" Nya and Maya hold up their wrists just when the Maaray Guards attack. The energy blasts hit one of their cuffs, freeing their wrists. They look down, baffled and relieved.

"Oh, that works too." Maya remarks.

"RUN!" Nya and Maya run in opposite directions, causing the other half of their restraints to pull them back together.

"Mom!"

"Nya!"

Nya instantly gets up and pulls her mother in her direction, while the Maaray guard blast them. "Come on!" Her mother gets up and follows her daughter.

Gripe screams, "Stop them!"

Maya and Nya end up in another part of the temple, where more guards surrounded them and were already alerted of them escaping. Nya glances at her mom, who lifts up her cuffed wrist with a smirk. The Water Ninja smirks as well.

The former Water Elemental swings her daughter around. Nya was lifted up into the air for a brief moment, as she circles around while she kicks the guards, who were now knocked out cold.

"Wait, hang on." Nya picks up a trident off the floor, and examines it. "How does this ...?" Her eyes sparkle with awe when the trident charges up at her command. She startles when the trident blasts a nearby pillar. Maya screams and moves out of the way.

"Careful!"

The Water Ninja puts on an apologetic face. "Sorry, sorry. I've got it now!" The trident blasts again, barely missing her mother.

"Nya!"

"Sorry. Okay," The trident charges up again. "I've actually got it now." A Maaray guard blasts her, but she dodges it and blasts him back. The eel guard gets knocked out from the blast. Another one appears and attempts the same attack, but she blocks it with her other handcuff.

"Oh, hey. That's better!" She blasts two more Maaray guards, who retreat instantly once they saw her armed with their own weapon. Making sure they were gone, she aims the trident at her mom, more specifically her handcuff. "Mom, hold still."

Maya widens her eyes at this. What if her daughter hurt her by accident with that thing? "Um, Nya, no. I'm not sure that's such a great—!" The blast comes, and her mother flinches for a brief second before opening her eyes again. She was relieved her other wrist was free. "Huh."

"Now run!" They run in the direction of their APS suits, just as another group of Maaray guards blast them. They reach the doors and hide behind them, catching their breath before seeing two more guards and Glutinous examining the mechs.

The guards and the mother and daughter charge at each other. They dodge the energy blasts from the guards as they continue running. Nya and Maya exchange a look, before Nya gives her the other end of the trident. They leap towards the guards and slide down, knocking out the guards instantly thanks to the trident.

Glutinous, too timid to do anything, scatters and climbs on a huge pillar as he watches Nya and Maya hop into their mechs. The mechs stand up, and face Gripe and his guards. "Blast them!" The guards make their move and blast the mechs, hoping to take them down again, but this time, Maya and Nya manuever the mech's arms to block the attacks.

They head towards the water pool and jump into it at the same time, swimming out of the temple and towards the Hydro Bounty quickly. Gripe looks down at the water's surface and growls.

"Release the Ripper Sharks!"

"Are you...certain that's necessary?" Glutinous questions the commander, who glares down at him.

"If the Prince finds out they escaped without revealing the location of the second amulet, what do you think he will do to us?" Too scared to find out what Kalmaar will actually do to him, Glutinous obeys and goes towards the water panel to release the Ripper Sharks from their cage.

The door slowly opens. Three hungry sharks swim out of their confines, one by one, and give the Water Ninja and the former Water Elemental chase.

Katarina was busy rerouting the power to the bridge, working on the wires and the circuitry to make it happen. "Okay Zane, give it another try!"

Zane nods. "Rerouting power, now." He presses down on the button to reroute the power, but all it does was cause it to short-circuit on him. The room goes dark. Red lights flash.

"Oh no!"

He sighs. "I was afraid of that."

"Well, that didn't work. What now?" Jay wonders aloud.

"We just used the last of our power. It wasn't enough." Katarina looks down the floor with a tired sigh. "I'm sorry." A screen turns on, showing what was happening downstairs. Lloyd gasps.

"We're taking on water. The sub's flooding!" He looks at his sister hopefully. "There's gotta be something else we can try." Katarina and Zane exchange worried looks.

"While you guys are thinking, I'll go..um..go down and get the oxygen tanks." Jay makes a mad dash out of the bridge and goes downstairs to fetch the oxygen tanks.

"The oxygen tanks? Those are located up here." Zane says, perplexed.

It was at that moment they knew what Jay was about to do.

"He's gonna try and recharge the battery!"

Jay puts on his scuba mask and straps the oxygen tank to his back, and dives downstairs. He swims towards the room where the capsules were, and once he was inside, he closes the door and jams it shut with a small pole he managed to find. He opens up the cabinet that showed the capsules, and lifts them up.

He charges up his hands with his lightning.

"Open the door!"

"Jay! Don't do it!"

"Jay! It's too dangerous!"

A bright blue glow emits from inside. Zane puts his hands on the door, but was electrocuted immediately. The lights begin to turn on, one by one.

"Holy shit..."

"He's doing it."

As Jay continued to charge up the submarine through the capsules, his eyes glow a bright electric blue. He stubbornly pushes through, until a strong pulse overcomes him and sends him flying back. The ship powers back on, and the rudder moves for a brief moment.

Katarina and Lloyd take off their scuba masks when the water drains from inside the submarine. Lloyd rushes towards the door. "Jay! Are you there?!"

"Say something!"

"Jay!"

No response comes from the door. That was when the sudden realization came. Jay was dead. He died giving his life to power up the submarine, even though he knew the risks that will come from it. Lloyd bangs his hand on the door again. "No...."

Suddenly, the pole from the door was removed, catching everyone off guard. The door opens to reveal a tired and weak Jay crackling with lightning, as he leaned agains the door and gave his friends a weak smile, much to their relief.

"You did it!"

"I can't believe it!"

"That was so incredible, Jay! You did it!"

Jay's smile grows a bit bigger. "Why are you all standing around, staring at me? Let's get this tub of bolts moving." Jay runs back toward the bridge. Lloyd smiles fondly.

"You heard him. What are we waiting for?"

"All hands to stations!" Zane commands.

"Full power!"

Katarina and Lloyd take their place at the bridge, and check to see if the submarine was functioning properly. "All systems are go! The helm is yours, captain." She reports to Zane, who shakes his head.

"No, the helm is yours." He says to Jay, who widens his eyes for a moment before sitting down on the captain's chair.

"All ahead. Left full rudder. Set your course on that energy signal." Everyone nods at Jay's command.

"All ahead!"

"Left full rudder!"

The Hydro Bounty steadily moves off the ledge, before taking off towards the energy signal. "Hang on, Nya. We're coming."
