Skybound: Chapter 2 - Public Enemy Number One
Katarina and Lloyd can safely say they had successfully been on the run for a week. While Lloyd had been treating Katarina's bruise, they had been trying to find out who had been framing them.
But with no luck.
They went into a crowded bar. Katarina used her Form to change her voice a bit as she ordered two drinks for her and her brother from the bartender.
As they waited for their drinks, everyone turned their attention to the TV.
"Any questions?"
"How do you find a ninja?"
"The ninja are still at large and public enemy number one."
A reporter shoved her mic at the Commissioner. "Did fame turn them?"
"We've taken their ship as well as secured their known hideouts. They will be caught and pay for their crime spree." Lloyd and Katarina look at each other nervously. "I bet my reelection on it."
"Can you tell us what's being done to find them?"
"No-No more questions."
They had to leave before the bartender or anyone at the bar noticed them.
"Hey, you two kinda look like-" The bartender said, putting their drinks on the bar table. But he didn't get to finish his sentence, as he watched the door swing open and close.
The next day, the Ninja went to the Monastery of Spinjitzu on their dragons. Kai had updated his status by sending a message on his Chirp account.
As they landed in the burnt monastery, Jay said "Seriously? I was the last one to figure out it was Wu's old monastery? And Lloyd wasn't even trained here."
Katarina looked around, and winced at the sight. "You know, you never really told me what happened to the place."
"Got burnt down by the Hypnobrai a while back." Kai explained. She nodded in understanding.
"It'll only be a matter of time before they find this place, too, so there isn't much time." Lloyd looked at Zane. "Zane, show them what you found."
Zane used his eyes to project footage of Wu at the Domu Library. "I came across security footage of Sensei at the Library of Domu. He was not alone."
Cole watched the footage. "Hey, look. It's Wu."
"What happened? Who was he looking at?" Kai said, watching Wu look behind him.
"We don't know, but no one's seen him since." Katarina said.
"The library database indicated he had checked out a book about the Teapot of Tyrahn. We originally thought we may be dealing with Clouse. If this is what I think it is, it appears to be far worse." Zane stopped projecting the footage. "We may have a Djinn on our hands."
"A Djinn?" Jay wondered aloud.
"Like a genie, only when he grants you wishes, you'll be wishing you never met him." Nya explained.
"What else do we know about Djinn?"
"Hmm. Not much, just that they are very sneaky and have great power." Kai said.
"From my knowledge of Djinns, there is only one to have ever roamed Ninjago's seas. His name was Nadakhan, and he was a pirate captain to a crew called Misfortune's Keep. Soto trapped him in the Teapot of Tyrahn long ago." Katarina explained. "How he got out, I don't know."
"What else do you know about him?" Cole asked.
"That's all I ever got to read about him. If we want to learn more about this Djinn, we need more reliable sources."
"Then it's settled. Since we know so little about Djinns, we need to head back to town to investigate more about him." Lloyd said.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. If we head back together, the police will arrest us on sight. We should split up." Cole said.
"But anyone caught alone with this character suddenly disappears." Kai pointed out.
"Then we travel in pairs, or in my case, a group of three. Zane, Katarina, you and I will head to the library to see what else we can find." Zane and Katarina nodded.
"Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait." Jay kept saying, standing beside Nya.
"Yeah, yeah. And Jay and I will look for clues at the scene of the crime where he framed us. What do you say, buddy, just like old times?" Cole smiled at Jay.
Jay laughed lightly and inwardly groaned. "Ah, sweet. Who doesn't love old times? Eh?"
"Kai, you and your sister see what else is out there. If we wanna clear our names and get Sensei back, we need to find this Djinn and take him down. Let's meet back here at sunup. Oh, and guys, look out for each other."
In their casual wear, Lloyd, Zane and Katarina were in the Library of Domu. Lloyd peered out of a bookcase, keeping an eye out of the security guard.
"Road clear." The trio went to the same spot WU was at the night before. "The book he was reading is still here. That camera took the footage of Sensei." Lloyd pointed to a security camera.
"We don't want to be spotted. Hacking into the library's central computers now." Zane said, already one step ahead. Seconds later, the security camera was disabled.
The trio walked to the open book. Katarina read the words aloud. "The Teapot of Tyrahn. The ancient markings on the side describe it's a powerful relic that can trap mortals."
"Oh. That may explain why people are suddenly disappearing." Lloyd muttered.
Zane read the next sentence. "And here's something more. Once a Djinn is freed from imprisonment, the only way to destroy him is by—"
Katarina and Lloyd looked at Zane. That was weird, why did he stop talking?
"Uh, Zane? You okay there, bud?"
"Warning. An unknown presence is hacking into our system." Pixal reported to Zane.
"Can you isolate the source?"
"It's coming from inside the building."
Suddenly, she glitched out. Another figure came walking into his head. "Look at that, Tin Can. I'm in your head. Sorry, didn't wanna to have to come to this, but a job's a job, right, buddy?"
"What's wrong? Why did you stop reading?" Lloyd asked Zane.
"I know it's unfair, but I disabled your voice box. And now I'm shutting down your defenses and—Oops. There go your arms." Ronin said with a smile.
"Zane?"
The Nindroid didn't respond. "Zane, what's wrong?"
"If it's any consolation, I didn't wanna have to fight you. And now technically, I don't. Good night, good buddy."
As if on cue, Zane shut down completely. This was only worrying Katarina and Lloyd more and more.
"Are you there?"
The cameras turn back on. The siblings turn their attention to it. "I took the liberty to close off the wing, Lloyd. Been meaning to say, love the TV spot." Ronin said through the intercom.
Lloyd and Katarina began running. "What was it you guys said? 'Reading is the first step to every adventure?'"
Katarina nudged Lloyd and pointed to the window.
"Sorry, Zane, but we've gotta get out of here." They walk towards the window, but stopped when bars came down on the window. Lloyd took a step back.
"Yeah, they installed those to keep the bad guys out. Or was it the good guys in? I don't remember for the life of me. Which are you, Lloyd and Katarina? A good guy or bad guy?"
"We were framed! You know us, Ronin! We would never do any of that stuff!" Lloyd shouted.
"You also know me, and I'm getting paid an awful lot to bring you guys in." They jumped when Ronin moved a few books from a nearby shelf. How's Nya? Boy, I missed her."
Katarina pushed Lloyd out of the way when Ronin got out a laser gun and aimed it at the siblings. A type of blue residue stuck onto the bookcases and the floor. Lloyd aimed an energy ball at Ronin and almost hit him, knocking down a bookcase.
The siblings ran behind a bookcase as more residue hit the shelves. Ronin moved the books and smirked. "Boo!"
A small ball of residue came at Lloyd. Katarina shoved him out of the way and summoned a ball of magic at Ronin. She threw it at Ronin, who ducked out of the way. They ran behind another bookase.
"Let's make this easy. I'll take you back to the station, you can answer their questions and clear your name."
"Lloyd, I'm going to try and capture Ronin on the other side of the wing. Keep him distracted." Katarina said, but Lloyd wouldn't let her by grabbing her hand.
"But what if he catches you?"
"That won't happen, because I'm gonna pummel his ass to the ground."
"But...." Katarina hugged him tightly. He hugged back.
"I'll be okay, little bro, trust me." She whispered.
He gripped tightly on her jacket. "Okay. You better make it out in one piece, got it?"
She smiled softly. She ruffled his hair. "That's the plan."
Then, they let go of each other. She ran to the otherside of the wing, hearing Lloyd in the distance. She ran behind a bookcase. She summoned a ball of magic in her hand. "Come on Lloyd, give me a clear shot."
A few moments later, she saw bookcases on the ground. Ronin was stuck beneathe them. She grinned, and ran out from her spot. She ran to the fallen bookcases, but stopped dead in her tracks when he wasn't there anymore.
Her magic summoned away. "Huh?"
"I got you now, sweetheart." Ronin said from in front of her. Behind him was Lloyd, struggling in his restraints. She gasped.
"Now, if you don't want Lloyd to get hurt, then you're gonna have to come with me."
She summoned her magic. "As if I'll ever do that!"
Ronin shook his head with false disappointment. "You made your choice, then." He aimed his gun at her, and she ran deep into the wing. She heard him in the distance, and didn't dare move.
When she didn't hear him anymore, she breathed a sigh of relief. "Phew, that was close."
"Yeah, too close."
Katarina's eyes widned when she spotted Ronin in front of her. She backed up, until her bruised back met the bookcase behind her. She winced.
Ronin grabbed her and held her close to his chest. She screamed as he put something on her mouth. She felt herself going unconscious. Her eyes were closing.
The last thing she heard from him was, "Good night, Ninja", and her head dropped. The figure holding her threw her over his shoulder as he shapeshifted into Nadakhan. He laughed.
"That was too easy."
In a puff of orange smoke, he was gone.
And so was Katarina.
