When You Meet Again- Kai

A/N
(Y/N) is your name
(L/N) is your last name
(H/C) means hair color

It has been almost a week since the fire in the building. I am still trying to get along without my grandmother. She went into assisted living two days ago when she was realeased from the hospital. As for me, I've been living in the tree of Ninjago.

Today I have a meeting with everyone from my apartment building. We are discussing the cause of the fire and what will happen now.

I walked into the community center and found room 3b. I opened the door and found myself among my previous neighbors.

Mrs. Trumpham saw me enter the room. She wrapped me into a comforting hug and patted my back.

"I am sorry about your grandmother. We are all upset."

I gave her a slight smile.

"Thank you, it means a lot."

I walked behind her and followed her to a circle of chairs. I sat next to Mrs. T and waited for the meeting to start.

After ten minutes of hugging all my neighbors, the meeting started. The landlord, Mr. Parker, started discussing the cause of the fire.

"You are all gathered here today to discuss how this fire happened and what will take place. Let's begin. The firemen say the fire was caused by a gas leak in the basement. A box of matches were found in the dumpster in the back of the building. This implies that the fire was set. There is no proof of who set the fire, but, the match box is in the hands of the police for fingerprint scanning. Because this may have been a set fire, I cannot force you to live out of the building. All residents of the building are allowed into their previous rooms after this meeting to claim all belongings that were uneffected."

"Where are we to live?" Mr. Gates asked.

"I am happy you have brought this up. The LandLow Apartment Complex will be moved to a new location in Ninjago City. Since the previous building had full fire insurance, all of your rooms will not need to be repurchased. But you will still have rent for future months. But your previous rent will be uneffected. I will also need a list of all your belongings, they will be replaced with no cost. Now if you choose to leave the LandLow Apartment Complex Family, your items will still be replaced but you will need to find somewhere else to live."

A wave of happy faces showered around the room.

"What about (Y/N)?" Mrs. T asked.

I looked at her in confusion and she smiled warmly at me.

"Since your apartment was under the listing of your grandmother, you as an individual are not part of this family. But, I would be honored to make you part of this family at our new complex. The decision is yours. But either way, all of youre belongings will be cashed out to you in full value." Mr. Parker said happily.

"I would love to be part of your family, but my grandma is using the money I've saved up." I said softly.

"Well where have you been staying?" he asked me. I shrugged, "Here and there. I actually haven't been staying anywhere, just the trees."

Gasps could be heard from the crowd, especially Mrs. T. "Yeah, that's not happening." Mrs. T said.

"I certainly do not. I wish I would be able to give you a free room but I am unable to do that." Mr. Parker said.

"I offer my love and support. I offer to take Y/N in and pay for a room for her."

"No, that is completely unnecessary, I couldn't let you do that." I protested.

"After the fire, the neighbors and I talked. We knew you had a job and we agreed to each help you pay fully for an apartment so you would not have to rent. What is the full price Mr. Parker?"

"If you wish to pay fully for an apartment, the cost is $2000."

A/N
I didn't want to make it extremely high. I know this is highly unreasonable, but this is how I want it in my story.

"No. I cannot let you pay for an apartment."

"If there is ten apartments, each person only pays $200 and the apartment is yours. No rent. We already agreed and we have the money right here." Mrs. T said pulling out an orange envelope. She handed it to Mr. Parker and I tried to protest.

"I can't let you give your money for me. I'm one person."

"Dear, we all have more money than we need. We get older everyday and you saved your life for your grandmother. You deserve this and your too young to be miserable. We want you to stick around. We like having a young neighbor to keep us out of harm's way. Plus, you're quite enjoyable. Especially in bingo!" Mr. Gates said.

"We aren't going to let you say no." Mrs. T said.

"So, do we have a new family member?" asked Mr. Parker.

I looked around struggling with my answer.

All my neighbors looked hopeful at me.

"I guess you do!" I said cheerfully.

Mr. Parker smiled with glee and all the neighbors surrounded me in a group hug. It feels great to have a full family. My parents died in a car crash when I was seve, my grandmother always took care of me until I turned sixteen, then things got rough. I'm seventeen now, almost eighteen, but it was still hard for me to take care of her.

The meeting ended as Mr. Parker closed. He told us to make a list of all of our belongings and hand it to him with our preferred room number. The building type was the same as last.

Everyone chose their same rooms as last time. Mr. Parker assured me that all rooms have a fire escape now so I wouldn't be stuck in another situation as last. Everyone was given their keys and was directed to claim all of their belongings that were untouched from the fire. My key said 2F. Floor Two, Room 6.

I stayed back to hug and thank all of my neighbors. I owed them.

"Thank you for this opportunity Mr. Parker. I couldn't imagine what I would do without you or my neighbors."

"Your most welcome Y/N. I do wish you and your grandmother the best."
Mr. Parker said. I nodded and left the community center with my keys in the back pocket of my light blue skinny jeans. I walked swiftly to the old apartment building.

I heard soft cries and gasps from my neighbors as they were examining their ruined apartments. I know that nothing valuable was destroyed in any of the homes because everyone agreed to keep their valuable items in a combined safe in the bank.

I walked upstairs to my old room and opened the door. I found black wood that was unstable to lean or walk on. The bed posts were falling apart. My linens and sheets had holes and crusts on them.

I opened my dresser and found that none of my clothes were burned or touched.

I have A LOT clothes. I had about ten t-shirts and three normal shirts. I had one flannel jacket, two pairs of light blue short-shorts and three pairs of skinny jeans. Two were dark colored and one was light blue. I had four crop tops, two of them loose and two of them tight. My favorite had a mid-way turtle neck. I also had one sweatshirt which was my moms. I take it everywhere. I had two pairs of black leggings and one pair of gray sweatpants. I also had two dresses. One was a plain black skater dress that went to my knees with tank top straps. The other dress had a black tank top sleeved top half and a red skater skirt for the bottom half.

I shoved all my clothes into a garbage bag and also stuffed two pairs of black converse, one pair of Nike Freerun, one pair of black flipflops, and one pair of black flats into my garbage bag. Of course I threw all my socks and undergarments in the bag too.

I checked under the bed and found the steel lockbox where I keep all my money from work. Inside I have small pictures of my grandma and grandpa.

I also grabbed my sketchbook, pencils, and graphite from behind the dresser. My notebooks, laptop, and books are in my backpack I take everywhere. So I didn't need to worry about those.

I shoved it into my bag and continued to search for anything I may have forgotten.

I didn't have anything else that I knew of, so, I grabbed my toothbrush and toothpaste, hairbrush and headbands before leaving the room.

The items on my list that needed replacement were:
Linens
Pillow
Blanket

Those were the only items that needed replacement. Zane, the white ninja, put out most of the fire before it reached my dresser. That's where everything but my lockbox was.

I walked out of the room with the now heavy garbage bag in my hand. I took one last glance at my life for a decade. I sighed and walked out, shutting the door behind me.

I noticed Mrs. T's door was open so I dropped my garbage bag by her door and knocked on the door frame.

"Mrs. T? Can I come in?" I asked.

"Of course dear."

I walked into her room to see almost nothing was touched. Wow. She got the lucky room.

"Wow. Your room wasn't touched almost the slightest."

"Your side of the hallway was the most effected. None of us had any hassle."

"Would you like some help to move the furniture and your belongings?"

I noticed that she had about six garbage bags full of belongings. She still had a chair to move out.

She nodded her head and I helped her move everything out of her room. I went back into check if there was anything we missed and left the room.

Mrs. T walked back upstairs to see her room one last time. I stayed downstairs and helped everyone move out. Mr. Parker had ordered a big moving van so all of our items and furniture could go together inside. I was helping all of my neighbors move.

Once everyone had moved their items, they walked or drove to the new apartment building. I walked to the bank with Mrs. T to claim everyone's personal belongings that were too valuable for the apartments.

We brought two boxes for the first floor and two more for the second.

I held up the pass the Mr. Parker gave us and the lady at the bank let us in.

The safe wasn't big. Maybe 3 feet by 3 feet at the most. I claimed all the things to the left for the second floor, and Mrs. T put all the items for the first floor in her box.

The box was filled with lots of old pictures and love letters to wives or kids. I found lots of jewelry that looked expensive. I put all jewelry in one box with photos. All books or anything else went into the second.

My valuables were separated into two boxes. My mother was a journalist and author so I kept all her newspapers and books she wrote. I loved to read the books over and over. She was a big fantasy novelist.

I also had pictures of my family. My dad and mom. Me. My grandpa and grandmother.

My father was a photographer so he had many photos and photo albums. The photo albums were filled with his work and our family. My mother and father were both involved with arts. I came out to be the studio artist. It runs in my blood. The thought made my eyes tear.

I also had jewelry that my mother had given me as presents for my birthdays. And also some of hers and my grandmothers.

I finally closed my boxes after making sure everything was cleared.

I didn't understand why we were taking our stuff out. We were moving complexes so we could still have our personals in a safe. But I guess there is no use to have it if it is locked away.
Mr. Parker also said that the new building is more modern and newly built. The rooms aren't made of old wood so they can be mostly fire proof.

Supposedly, the rooms are supposed to come with one bed and a new bathroom. There is a window, fire escape and dresser provided. There is also room for furniture so in the future I can buy a desk for my art.

I'm glad to be able to look through my personal belongings every night. I can read my mom's books and study my dad's photographs. I can step up my art and be reminded where I get my talent.

I also have jewelry I can look at and possibly be inspired to create something. I will definitely look at my family photos. I will never lose those.

Mrs. T was waiting for me out in the lobby of the bank. I walked out and nodded, gesturing that we can move ahead.

We walked to the new building and found that my neighbors were helping each other unload. Everyone would help one person load everything into their room, and then we would all help the second person. I love how this building acts as a family. Everyone helps each other and gets along.

I started to help everyone unpack. My room was the last and I only had a garbage bag. I did it by myself. I walked upstairs and set my backpack down in front of the door. I unlocked my room and stepped in.

The walls were painted white and there was dark, mahogany laminate floors. A white mattress sat in the corner of the room on the opposite side of the window. I was on the left side of the building so the window was to my left. My bed was right in front of the door when you walked in.

There was a clean, stainless steel stove/oven in the left of my room. Above was a microwave. A mini-fridge sat to the right of the counters. The counters were made of white quartz.

A dresser sat to the left of the bed. It was a clean white with stainless steel nobs. I quickly folded all of my clothes and out them into three separate drawers: shirts, pants, etc.

I hung my two dresses on two of the many coat hangers in the closet. I put my shoes underneath them and closed the closet doors. Everything was organized.

The bathroom was the same as the kitchen. Modern and new. The bathtub was included with the shower and there was a long mirror that stretched across the sink. The mirror was the length of the bathtub. The toilet sat in front of the counter facing the direction of door.

I walked back out to my room. I discovered that there was my bedroom and a slight hallway that was the kitchen. Included in the bedroom was an open concept living room that connected to my room. It was an extra-large bedroom.

There was a set of double sliding glass doors that led to a gorgeous view of a garden from my balcony. I've never had a balcony and they are quite stunning.

I stood in awe over my room and realized that I didn't have any sheets or blankets for my bed. Mr. Parker said to be checking our mailboxes tomorrow for the money of our lost belongings due to the fire.

I decided I would just wear long pajamas to keep warm.

I wanted to go on a run and distribute the safe items so I quickly changed into a lime green t-shirt and a pair of black gym short-shorts. I pulled on a pair of non-matching socks and tied my Nike shoes. I then pulled my H/N hair into a pony tail. I slipped a headband on and jogged out my door. I had the boxes of personal items in my hands so I closed the door with my foot. I didn't bother to lock it. I trust these people with my life.

I went door to door giving my neighbors their belongings on the second floor. Mrs. T passed out the first floor already. I had already put my personal belongings in my room.

I set my books on top of my dresser for reading. The photos and albums went into the first drawer of my dresser. My mom's and grandma's jewelry went under some clothes in my third drawer.

Once I passed everyone's items out, I knocked on Mrs. T's door.

"Come in." I heard.

I opened the door to see Mrs. T unpacking.

"I just wanted to say thank you for everything. These new apartments are so much better than the old. I wouldn't be here without your help."

"No problem dear. And I do love these apartments. A balcony and living room. That is quite an upgrade." Mrs. T said cheerful.

I smiled and agreed while nodding my head.

"Well I was going to go on a run around the city. I have my phone so if you need help or want me home, just call."

"Be careful, it's getting dark." she said.

"I will." I said before walking out her door.

I gently closed it and began to jog downstairs. I made sure no one needed anything before I plugged my earbuds into my phone and began to jog out of the building.

I was thinking about my parents before they died. How they played games with me. Their art. How I always wanted to be like them when I grew up. Now, looking at their photos reminds me that they're gone.

I checked the time on my phone after I felt like I'd been running a while. The time on my phone read 7:19. The sun was setting and I just ran. I ran past Ninjago Park, I saw five familiar faces sitting there and I sped up my pace. I took a break leaning my hands on my knees. I wiped my eyes and breathed heavily. The song I was listening to boosted my speed. I never usually run that far.

I went to wipe another drop of sweat and continue running when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked up to see the handsome brown eyes of Kai.

Wait what?!

I pulled out my earbuds and held them in my right hand and my phone in my left.

"Hey--" I paused to catch my breath. "What's up?" I asked him.

"Not much. Looks like you've had a rough week."

"Doesn't matter." I said back.

"Come on." He said pulling my hand with my phone.

"Wait. Go where?"

"Here." He said finally stopping in the park.

I leaned over to catch my breath again.

"Don't make--" I paused to catch my breath. "Don't make me run after I just did." I said pointing my finger at Kai.

"Hey (Y/N)." The ninja all said.

"Why are you all sweaty?" Lloyd asked.

"I went for a run around the city."

"Why?" Cole asked.

"To take my mind off of things."

"Like..." Kai motioned.

"So demanding, aren't you Kai?"
He shrugged and the others were violently nodding their heads.

"Just the fire and stuff."

Kai put his arm around me and I glanced at my phone. 7:45.

I looked down at my phone to see an incoming call from Mrs. T.

"Be right back." I said to the ninja. They nodded and I walked off behind the trees.

"Hello, Mrs. T."

"Hello (Y/N). It is getting late. When will you be back?"

"I'm talking with the ninja, so I don't know."

"Okay. Bye now."

"Bye, Mrs. T."

I walked back to where the ninja were and I sat back on the bench. "Who was that?" Cole asked.

"My neighbor."

"Okay. Well our Sensei just called us in so we have to go. Where's your apartment, we can walk you?" Lloyd told me.

"Okay thanks. It's this way." I said walking in front to my new building.

I lead them to a brick building, basically looking just like the old one. "This is it."

"Looks almost identical." Lloyd said.

"Yeah, I know right."

"I would offer to walk you in but we have to go. Maybe another time?" Kai said.

"Of course. Thanks for keeping me company, and saving me from a dreading run back." I told them, a smile on my lips.

The others turned and started to walk away.

"Bye Y/N!" They called before turning.

"Bye guys! Thank you!" I shouted waving back. Kai stayed behind to tell me something.

"Text me." he said slipping a piece of paper in my hand.

"Sure. Thank you."

He turned and started walking backwards towards the others.

"See you later Y/N!" He called waving.

"See you!" I called waving back.

I turned back to the door with my cheeks glowing red. His dreamy eyes are to die for.

I pressed the buzzer for Mrs. T hoping she would answer.

"Who is it?" she called through the speaker/intercom we have installed in each of our rooms.

"Y/N, I left my keys inside."

"Okay. Come in." she responded.

The door clicked and I pushed it open. I love having a good security system. I walked upstairs and opened my door. I noticed a pan with tinfoil on top of on my kitchen counter. A note sat beside it:

Brownies for a sweet girl. There is also casserole in your fridge. I know you haven't eaten yet.
-Mrs. T

Mrs. T is the sweetest human in the world. I heated some casserole in my microwave and set the brownies on top of the fridge.

I closed my door and changed into my mother's sweatshirt, and my gray sweatpants. I didn't have any blankets or sheets so I slept with heavy clothing. Then I remembered that I shoved my baby blanket and teddy bear into my garbage bag. I reached into my closet and pulled out a soft, brown bear and a light pink/red baby blanket. I've slept with these since I was a baby. When I turned ten, I started to sleep in a sleeping bag so I never used them.

They made me feel safe when my parents died. My parents got them for me when I was a baby. So, now I need to feel safe. What better way than with my parents.

I decided to text Kai goodnight just for him to get my number.

Me: Hi Kai, it's (Y/N). Just wanted you to get my number and say goodnight.

Kai: Cool, thanks. Goodnight.

Me: Night.

I shut my phone off and plugged it into an outlet near my bed. Then I locked my door and fell asleep gripping my bear and blanket on my bed. I haven't slept in a bed for eight years, so I fell asleep quickly.
