When It's Your Birthday - Jay
I narrowed my eyes at the screwdriver as I twisted one last part back into the machine I had poured my heart and soul into. This was three week worth of my effort, my time, my sweat, my tears, and my imagination. I had finally finished one of Nya's many many upgrades for her Samurai suit, and now he would have no mechanical issues next time she needed to kick some butt.
I really didn't want to work on my birthday, but I didn't have any other plans and after spending three nights this week alone with a bowl of popcorn and Friends reruns, I was getting a little tired of doing nothing.
I smiled to myself and stared at my creation before sighing and placing it into my drawer and locking it, then throwing the key into my overalls pocket. I grabbed my backpack and threw it over my shoulder before walking to the exit where I clocked out and left, my journey home beginning.
My scooter was - ironically - in the shop right now and I hadn't found the time to get to it, so I had to walk. Lucky for me it wasn't too dark outside and the weather was nice so nothing horrifying could happen. It was just me, my sneakers, and the sidewalk.
The walk was perhaps ten minutes and was mostly silent other than the people conversing in the park or in front of the shops. But after passing everyone, I had finally made it to the outskirts of the city where my big white house sat in front of me, a fence surrounding it.
I took out my key from my bag and unlocked the door, then stepping in and closing it behind me. When I reached for the lights, they flicked on by themselves and I was met with a dozen people yelling "Surprise!"
I froze in shock, staring at the intruders in my home. Jay stood in front of me with a camera and the flash went off, blinding me temporarily. I groaned and rubbed my eyes, hearing Lloyd say "Seriously? You're going to blind your girlfriend at her party in her house on her birthday?"
His comment made me chuckle a bit and after blinking numerously, I finally opened my eyes to see my friends. Jay was in front of me and I gave him a hug first, pecking him on the lips as a thank you for the surprise. "Happy birthday, baby," he said against my cheek as he kissed me again. I grinned, "Thanks, Jay. You really got me."
"Oh, I tried," he modestly said with a shrug of his shoulders to add character. "He's been planning this for two weeks," Cole told me, giving me a light hug and then gesturing to all the balloons and streamers hanging from the ceiling and staircase.
I got a hug from each ninja, Nya, and Sensei before seeing BF/N enter the room. "Happy birthday, loser!" she laughed, giving me a tight hug and rocking me back and forth. "When did you get back? I thought you were doing the college tour?"
"I got back about thirty minutes ago," she giggled. "Jay told me it was important so I came home. It was mostly over anyway," she shrugged. I smiled and gave her another hug. "Oh, and there's one more thing we have for you," she admitted, stepping away from me and wandering toward the kitchen. "Stay there!" she ordered, pointing a demanding finger at my face.
Jay smirked and covered my eyes with his hands, positioning himself behind me so I wouldn't try to kick him so my eyes would be uncovered.
I heard moving around, something squeaking on the kitchen tile, and then a few hushed voices. "Okay, now you can look," Jay said, removing his hands from my face. I opened my eyes and looked straight ahead and saw my blue scooter all repaired with no wires hanging from the back like I had left it. I gasped and my hands flew to my mouth. It looked brand new, but yet it wasn't.
"What? How did you -- "
"BF/N told us you had been trying to do some repairs on it but it just wasn't working so I recruited the entire team to fix it for you," Nya said, pulling keys out of her pocket and tossing them to me. "Jay and I really did all the mechanical fixes, but the others did more of the heavy lifting and visual repairs," she elaborated, gesturing to her brother, Cole, Zane, and Lloyd.
Kai saw me glance at him and lifted his arms to show some of his muscles and I laughed, watching as Cole effortlessly slapped him upside the head. "You guys are the absolute greatest. I don't even know where to begin my thanks for this," I said, giving them each another hug.
"Sensei Wu was the one who kept hitting us when we got off track. It was 'fix this,' 'tighten this,' and 'no, not this,' and Sensei actually hit us with his staff each time we either touched the wrong thing or took a break," Cole admitted.
I looked back as Sensei and he had a mischievous grin on his face, "You must learn every art," he simply said. "Sensei is the real MVP here," I giggled, sligning an arm around his shoulder. He smiled at me and I knew this night as going to be amazing.
