SOS: Part 2
Lloyd's P.O.V.:
I found her body on the ground, laying in a pool of her own blood. She had a bullet hole in her leg and one in her shoulder and was completely unconscious. I tried to feel her pulse, and luckily I felt it, but it was very slow and weak.
"Somebody call 911!" I shouted.
"I already did. They're seven minutes out." A man said.
"She doesn't have seven minutes." I frowned.
I grabbed one of the first aid kits and some cling wrap they were selling and I wrapped up her wounds to stop the bleeding. I put my ear by her heart. It was beating, but barely. I started doing CPR to keep her heart beating.
"Come on Kira stay with me. I need you. Our kids need you. Please don't leave me."
A few minutes later, the paramedics came and took over the CPR. I rode with her to the hospital. They took her into surgery but I couldn't go beyond the doors. They practically forced me to the ER to get my hand looked at. The bullet had sprained two of my fingers so they put it in a cast and sent me home, but I couldn't go home, I needed Kira.
I was in the waiting room waiting for any news on Kira's condition. I looked at the TV and saw a news report. Gayle Gossip was standing in front of the gas station.
"This is Gayle Gossip reporting live from in front of this local Ninjago gas station, where I have gotten reports of an armed robbery that happened just 20 minutes ago. A couple was taken to the hospital and while the husband only had minor injuries to his hand, the woman was shot twice and was left in critical condition and is undergoing emergency surgery. We have been asked to protect their identities at this time. The police do not have yet have any leads on the suspect, but we will keep you updated as the story develops. I'm Gayle Gossip from NGTV News, back to you Fred."
This was all my fault. If I had just been paying attention then I wouldn't have had to pull the car over and I wouldn't have stopped there. What if she wasn't going to be ok this time? What if I have to go the rest of my life without her? What if the kids come back and I have to tell them that I killed their mom? There were a thousand different thoughts going through my head all at the same time.
It took about two hours until a nurse finally came up to me.
"Mr. Garmadon?" She said.
"Is she ok?" I looked at her.
"Your wife's surgery went well and we were able to get both bullets out, however there were some complications."
"Complications?"
"The bullet in her shoulder nicked a major artery. When we removed it, her blood pressure dropped so low, the only way to save her was to put her in a coma." She told me.
"A coma?" I frowned.
"A medically induced coma. Protocol calls for 24 hours or until her blood pressure is back to normal. Sometimes it can take longer, but most people wake up within a few days."
"Most people? You mean there's a chance that she... won't?"
"It's possible, but it's very rare."
"But once she wakes up, she'll be ok, right?" I asked desperately.
"Since there was no brain damage it's most likely she'll recover from the incident mentally, but we can't say anything for sure about her physical condition with what that bullet did to her leg."
"Are you saying she may never walk again?" I frowned.
"Look Lloyd, Kira's worked here a long time and we all know how tough she is." She looked me in the eyes. "We will do everything we can to make sure she walks out of this hospital. The best thing you can do is go home and make sure your family is taken care of."
"My family?" I frowned.
They wouldn't let me see her tonight, so I went back to the parking lot and caught a cab. I didn't trust myself to go home and be in that big empty space by myself, so I went to the only place I could think of. The only family I had left.
Garmadon's P.O.V.:
Wu and I were in our apartment. I had ordered a pizza but it was taking a while to get here. I heard a knock on the door. I opened it to see my son. He looked as though he'd been crying.
"Lloyd?" I questioned.
"Hi Dad. Can I stay here for a while?" Lloyd frowned.
"Sure, come on in." I said.
He came in and sat down on the couch. He seemed really upset.
"Hello Lloyd." My brother said. "It's weird to see you here without Kira. Where is she?"
"It's a long story." Lloyd frowned.
"Is she ok?" I asked.
"Well you know how Ryder took Ashley, Ethan, and the team on that mission?" Lloyd said and I nodded. "Well Zane uncovered a mayday call from Ryder and we have no idea where they are or if they're ok."
"Oh no." Wu frowned.
"Is that why your upset?" I asked.
"And then on our way back, I was so distracted I couldn't focus so we pulled over to the gas station. I went to the bathroom to clean myself up and Kira came in and knocked on the door. That was when... it happened."
"What happened?" Wu asked.
"Someone came in with a gun and shot up the place. Kira was hit twice and I... I got locked in and I... I couldn't do anything." Lloyd was tearing up.
"Did she... make it?" I asked.
"I did what I could to help and the paramedics took her. The surgery went well, but then they had to put her in a coma." He frowned. "Now I don't know if she'll ever wake up and it's all my fault."
"Lloyd don't blame yourself." I sat next to him.
"No one could have seen that coming." Wu said.
"I'm all alone now." He frowned. "I lost my family in one day."
"We don't know that." Wu said.
"Did they let you see her?" I asked.
"No. They don't let visitors in until a certain time after their surgery." He frowned. "I'm going over there tomorrow but I don't know if I want to see her like that."
"We'll go with you if you like." Wu said.
"Of course." I agreed.
"Thanks, that would be nice." He sighed.
Then we heard another knock on the door. It was the pizza guy and Wu answered it, tipped him and sent him on his way. Then he set it on the coffee table and we ate, but Lloyd just sat there.
"There's plenty of pizza son, it's your favorite." I said.
"No thanks, I'm not hungry." He sighed.
"I know you're sad but you've had a long day. Maybe you'll feel better if you eat something?" Wu said.
"I said I wasn't hungry." Lloyd said frustrated.
"Lloyd Montgomery Garmadon eat some pizza or you're grounded." I demanded.
"I just found out my kids are MIA and my wife is in a coma and you're trying to ground me for not eating pizza?" Lloyd said.
"Well you do need your strength." I insisted.
"Fine, I'll eat." Lloyd rolled his eyes and picked up a slice of pizza.
He wasn't happy about it at first, but I could tell he was feeling at least a little better after he ate. Of course he was still sad but there wasn't anything I could do about that. I did notice he had a cast on his left hand.
"What happened to your hand?" I asked.
"Oh, one of the bullets grazed me when I was in the bathroom. That's why I couldn't open the door." He explained. "If I had opened it just a few seconds earlier I could've saved her."
"Or you would've been killed." I said.
"Go get some sleep Lloyd. I can bunk with your dad so you can have my room." Wu told him.
"What if I go to sleep and I wake up and Kira's gone?" Lloyd worried. "What if the kids come back and I have to tell them that I killed their mother? They'll never want to see me again and I'll lose everything, if I haven't already lost everything."
"Lloyd look at me. You were not responsible for what happened to Kira." I said.
"But it's my fault we were there." He frowned. "I don't see why they would ever forgive me."
"Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is yet to come, we only have today." Wu said.
"You're right master Wu." Lloyd took a deep breath. "I guess I'll call the hospital and check on her, then try to get some rest."
"Ok." I nodded.
Lloyd went into Wu's bedroom. Wu looked at me.
"Brother, he has gone through something truly horrific." Wu said.
"I know. I don't know how he's going to get through this without his family." I frowned.
"Don't forget, we're his family too." Wu smiled.
"Yeah, thanks." I smiled.
Wu and I went to bed, but I woke up when I heard Lloyd crying. I went into the room to see what was going on.
"Lloyd?" I knocked on his door.
"Come in." He sighed.
I opened the door and found him crying on the bed. I sat down next to him and put my arms around him.
"Did you call them?"
"Yeah, her condition hasn't changed and she hasn't woken up, but the good thing is she's stable and isn't getting any worse." He frowned.
"That's good news isn't it?"
"I guess, but even if she wakes up she might not be the same as before. They're not even sure she'd be able to walk again."
"It's gonna be ok son."
He sat there hugging me and I was doing everything I could to comfort him, but there was only so much I could do. But one thing I knew for sure, was he needed a father right now.
Lloyd's P.O.V.:
**********flashback**********
Kira had been gone for almost a month now and I was beginning to think I was cursed. I had to fight my father, possessed by Morro, betrayed by Harumi, beaten by my father again and now my wife, who was only supposed to be gone 2 days, had disappeared. Why couldn't anything in my life go right? Why was all of this happening to me? Why me?!
I was in the bathroom just trying to find something in my life to live for, but I couldn't think of anything. Between my friends and my mother Ryder would be taken care of, and they would probably raise him better than I could anyway. I took my sword, pointed it right at my heart and was about to end my misery, but then...
"Daddy?" My two year old son knocked on the door.
I took a deep breath and dropped the sword at my feet. I opened the door and little Ryder jumped in my arms and gave me the biggest hug. He looked as though he'd been crying.
"What's wrong bud?" I looked at him.
"I... I had bad dream." He frowned.
"What about?"
"You went away and... and I never saw you again." He cried into my shirt.
I looked at the sword on the bathroom floor and my son crying in my arms. I realized he didn't need just anyone taking care of him, he needed me.
"Don't worry bud, I'm not going anywhere." I hugged him.
********end of flashback********
It was in that moment I realized that it didn't matter how upset I was or who would take care of him, he needed his father. Ryder saved my life that day and he doesn't even know it.
Thankfully it all worked out when Kira came back and then Ashley and Ethan came along, but now everything is falling apart again. My wife's in a coma, my kids are missing, my mother's gone, what am I supposed to do with that?
I after getting barely any sleep, I decided to get up and walk into the kitchen. My dad was busy making breakfast, or trying to anyway.
"Hey son, how did you sleep?" I asked.
"I barely got any." I yawned. "Come on, we need to see Kira."
"Don't you wanna eat first?" My dad asked showing me the burnt toast.
"That's ok Dad, I'll just grab a banana." I told him.
"Suit yourself." He shrugged.
While I did appreciate the gesture, I guess I wasn't used to my dad actually trying to be a dad. Yeah we had our good moments, but I'm a grown man now and he was a few years off in his parenting book, but I was glad he was trying.
I walked over and grabbed a banana. I ate it quickly so we could get a move on. Then right after breakfast we all got in the car and my dad drove us to the hospital to see Kira. A part of me didn't want to see her in that condition, but Kira always came to visit me whenever I was in the hospital, so I should do the same for her, no matter how hard it was.
We arrived at the hospital and went to Kira's room. I walked through the door and I saw Kira on the bed plugged up to all those machines. The heart monitor was beeping over and over again. She had bandages all over her.
"Kira?" I walked up to her bed. "Kira I don't know if you can hear me, but you have to wake up. I know you think that without the kids there's nothing to live for, but you can live for me. Please Kira I need you in my life. Those three years I didn't have you, I just wanted to die, but I lived for Ryder to take care of him. And then you came back into my life and we had Ashley and Ethan and I had everything I ever wanted. But now you're all I have, so please, please don't leave me again. I can't handle this by myself. Please Kira please wake up."
I dropped to my knees and cried by her bedside. I held her hand and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"I love you." I whispered to her.
It was so weird to talk to her when she couldn't reply to me. That was the first time she didn't say I love you too. It was so hard to see her like that in so much pain. I wanted to tell her that the kids were ok, but I didn't know if that was true. I wasn't about to lie to her.
I wanted to just sit here with her forever. Because I was so sleep deprived, I fell asleep in a chair by her bed. When I woke up I saw a nurse in the room checking on Kira. My dad and Wu must've gone somewhere else.
"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you." The nurse said.
"That's ok, I never meant to fall asleep, I must've just dozed off." I yawned. "How is she?"
"Well the good news is her heart rate and blood pressure are back to normal and her vitals look good." She explained. "We'll keep her under till tomorrow morning just to be safe, but then we'll try to wake her up."
"Will I be able to take her home when she wakes up?" I asked.
"There's still a lot of treatments she'll need from here before she can go home, but we will do our best." She said.
The nurse answered a few more of my questions, but it was nothing I didn't already know. She continued caring for Kira and then she left.
It was great that Kira was improving but I didn't know what the future held for us. Even if Kira pulls through this, will we have to go the rest of our lives without the kids? How is a parent supposed to deal with that kind of loss? Hopefully I'll never have to find out.
Then a few minutes later, my dad and master Wu walked in carrying a bag of food.
"Hey you're awake." My dad said.
"Yeah, where did you guys go?" I asked.
"Oh we went out for lunch, we were going to invite you but you looked like you really needed to rest." Wu said.
"That's ok, I wanted to stay with Kira anyway." I looked at her.
"Here, we got you some food." My dad handed me the bag.
My dad handed me the bag and it had chicken nuggets and fries. It was my favorite meal when I was a kid, not so much now but I still like them. However I was starving so I was going to eat them.
"Thanks Dad." I smiled.
I sat down and started eating. I felt kind of weird because Kira couldn't eat anything.
"Do your friends know yet?" My dad asked.
"No, I don't want them to worry. They have enough to worry about already with the kids being gone."
Oh man the kids. I had so much on my plate with Kira I wasn't even thinking about the kids. To think, Ryder, Ashley and Ethan didn't even know this was happening. What if they never get the chance to see their mom again?
"Lloyd? Are you ok?" My dad asked.
"It's just, the kids don't know about any of this and we have no contact with them. What if they come back and they miss the chance to see their mom again?" I frowned.
"We do not know what the future holds Lloyd, all we can do is take the right steps to get us to the future we want." Wu told me.
"But the future I want is a future with Kira." I frowned. "I can't imagine going on without her, I love her, the kids love her, and I promised I would always protect her, and I broke that promise."
"Lloyd it wasn't your fault." My dad said.
"Yes it was." I frowned. Then my phone started ringing. It was Zane. "I gotta take this."
I stepped into the hallway and took the phone call.
"Hello?" I answered the phone, trying to sound as if I hadn't been crying.
"Lloyd, I have triangulated the location of the call." He said.
"That's great. Do you know if they're ok?" I asked.
"They were near the coast of the island they were headed to when Ryder sent that message. It is most likely that they were able to make it shore."
"Oh that's great. I really needed some good news right now."
"Is everything ok?" He asked.
"No." I said. "I messed up really bad and it's all my fault."
"What happened?" Zane questioned.
"It's a long story. I'll explain everything later." I sighed. "Anyways, thanks Zane."
I put the phone away and went back into the room. I told my dad and Wu the good news about the kids. We didn't know for sure if they were ok, but at least we had hope and they weren't in the middle of the ocean. That little bit of hope was all I needed.
