All Cards On The Table
Lloyd's P.O.V.:
I was in Kira's hospital room. They were going to try and wake her up today and the doctor recommended that there be only one person in the room when she wakes up so we didn't overwhelm her. My dad and Wu were downstairs in the waiting room. I was excited to hear her voice again, but a part of me knew that there was still a chance this wouldn't work. If she didn't wake up, I would never forgive myself. And if she does, would she ever forgive me?
I watched as the nurse took her off the anesthesia in attempt to wake her up. After a few minutes, she finally opened her eyes.
"Hey Kira." I smiled.
She sat up the best she could and I helped her out. She tried to talk but she kept coughing.
"Hey calm down, don't try to talk." I said.
She tried to stand but me and the nurse laid her back down. She looked at her leg and then her shoulder. She looked at me like she didn't know what had happened.
"There was an accident, and you got hurt." I frowned. "But don't worry, you're going to be ok."
She tried to talk again, but ended up coughing to point where she had to stop trying. The nurse handed her a clipboard and a pen. Kira took them and wrote something down. She showed it to me.
'How long?'
"You've been here two days." I answered. "There were complications with the surgery and the only way to save you was to put you in a coma."
She took the clipboard again.
'The kids?'
"Zane hasn't found them yet, but we know they were near the island when they crashed. We have reason to believe they're ok."
Kira's face looked relieved. Then she noticed the cast on my hand and pointed to it.
"Oh this? It happened while I was trying to open the door. It's just a sprain."
'What happened to us?' She wrote on the clipboard.
"I'd rather not relive it." I frowned.
'Please. I need to know.' She wrote again.
"Ok." I nodded and sighed.
Despite how much I didn't want to, I explained to her everything that happened that day. When I was done with the story, she sat up and held her head.
"Are you ok?" I asked.
She nodded, picked up the clipboard and wrote me another message.
'Are you ok?'
"Me? I'm fine. I was just worried about you."
'You blame yourself. I know you too well.' She showed me.
"Well if I had just drove us home than none of this would've happened." I frowned.
'It's not your fault.' I read from the clipboard.
"But I feel like I could've done something more. I made a promise to protect you and I couldn't do that. I'm so sorry." I frowned.
'It's ok.' She wrote.
She coughed and sat up. She tried to move her pillow but she was unable to.
"Here, I got it." I said fluffing her pillow.
She rolled her eyes and repositioned herself. I heard her stomach growling.
"Are you hungry? Oh wait, what kind of question is that? You haven't eaten in two days, of course you are." I facepalmed. "What are you craving? Pizza? Seafood? Burgers? Anything you want."
Kira smiled and wrote the words 'ice cream' on her clipboard.
"Ok you wait right here, I'll go get you some." I said running out of the room.
I went down to the cafeteria and got the ice cream. On the way back I ran into my dad and my uncle.
"Lloyd." My dad got my attention.
"Oh hey dad. Hey master Wu." I said.
"I thought you hated strawberry?" My dad looked at the ice cream.
"I do, but it's Kira's favorite. She asked me to bring her some." I said.
"She woke up?" Wu smiled.
"Yeah." I said. "She's conscious, but she's too weak to talk. She's been writing messages to me on a clipboard."
"Will she be able to go home soon?" My dad asked.
"Probably not." I frowned. "The doctors want her to stay here so they can monitor her condition. At this stage in her recovery it could get worse if we're not careful."
"Well you're welcome to stay with us for as long as you need to." My dad said.
"Thanks dad. I'll probably be staying until Kira can come home, but it's going to be a long recovery for her." I frowned.
"We'll be there for whatever both of you need." My dad smiled.
"Thanks Dad." I smiled. "I gotta go, Kira's probably getting hungry."
"Ok son. We'll be right here when you need us." My dad said.
Garmadon's P.O.V.:
Lloyd nodded and went back upstairs. I looked at my brother.
"What is wrong brother?" Wu asked me.
"Lloyd has grown up so much." I frowned.
"Yes, but so have you."
"I know, but I used to know everything he liked. His favorite foods, movies, games, but his interests have changed since he got older." I frowned.
"You never seemed to have a problem before."
"Lloyd didn't live with us before, and I would always ask Misako if I wanted to know anything, but now..."
"Misako's loss has affected us all, it has especially affected Lloyd."
"She always knew what to say in these kinds of situations, but I don't know if there's anything I can say to help Lloyd now." I frowned.
"He does not seek your wisdom brother, he seeks your comfort."
"I want to be the father he needs, but I guess I'm a bit out of practice when it comes to the comfort part."
"And he is learning how to accept it." Wu said. "He'll come around, just give him time."
"I hope so." I frowned.
Lloyd's P.O.V.:
I met back up with Kira and I gave her the ice cream.
"Here you go. Sorry it took so long, I ran into my dad and Wu." I told her.
She gave me a big smile and licked the ice cream. She may not have been able to actually talk to me, but it made me feel better that she was at least awake and happy.
Once she was finished she picked the clipboard back up and wrote me something else.
'Are Wu and your dad here?'
"Yeah, I've been staying with them while you were recovering." I said. "I just didn't trust myself to be alone. The thought of loosing you and the kids all in the same day was too much for me to handle. It reminded me of the time that you..."
Kira got the biggest frown on her face. She always looked like that when I brought up the time she left to find the teapot of Tyrann.
"Oh sorry." I frowned. "I know that wasn't your fault. I just meant that, even back then, I had my mom and Ryder, which gave me something to live for. This time I thought I was going to loose everything. That's why I went to my dad and Wu, so they could make sure I stuck around to see how everything worked out, and now I'm glad I did."
Kira's frown turned into a big smile. She wrote something down again.
'Do you think the kids are ok?'
"They are pretty resilient kids. I know they'll find a way back to us."
I held her hand and we looked at each other.
One question still remained though: who did this to my wife?
Skylor's P.O.V.:
Two days ago...
I was in the car with Kai heading to the hotel. I wasn't too keen on the idea of the vacation right now with the kids missing, but I also couldn't bring myself to go back home with all the memories we've made there.
In the car, I received a call from my boss.
"Officer Smith." I said into the phone.
"Skylor, we have an ongoing investigation and we need your help." The commissioner said.
"I'm sorry sir, but I'm having a bit of a family emergency right now."
"I'm sorry to hear that, but I thought you would want to take this one because it involves some of your friends."
"Wait, who?"
"Lloyd and Kira Garmadon."
"What? I just saw them a few hours ago."
"Gas station on 5th street, armed robbery, two people hurt, one in critical condition."
"I'll be right there!" I said as I put my phone down.
"What's going on?" Kai asked.
"We have to turn back. Now." I said.
"Babe, you said you weren't going to take any more assignments until the kids were back."
"I know but I can't turn down this one. Lloyd and Kira were the victims."
Kai immediately took a U-turn and drove us to that gas station on 5th street. The ambulance had already left so I assumed Lloyd and Kira went with it. I ran to the other cops that were guarding the entrance and flashed my badge.
They let me in and I saw the pile of blood on the floor near the bathrooms. Something terrible had happened here.
"Whoa." Kai said looking around.
I saw the cashier sitting on the ground trying to calm himself down. I walked up to talk to him.
"Hi, I'm officer Smith, NCPD." I showed him my badge.
"I already told you guys everything I know." He complained.
"Yes, but I just got here and the person who got hurt was a friend of mine, so I suggest you tell me what happened."
"It was weird. I thought the dude was trying to rob the place, but he never asked for money or took any merchandise." He said.
"So he just came in, shot the green ninja, and left?" Kai asked.
"What? It wasn't the green ninja, it was his wife."
"Kira?" Kai looked at me. "Is she ok?"
"She was alive when the paramedics took her to the hospital but that's all I know." He said.
"Can you describe the suspect?" I asked.
"He was tallish and had a deep voice but that's all I could notice. He was wearing a ski mask and he never looked at anyone except the girl."
"What about your security cameras?" Kai asked.
"He hit them with his gun. I've already tried but there's no way to recover the tapes."
"This person has to be experienced to be able to cover their tracks like that." I said.
"What are you thinking?" Kai asked.
"I'm thinking that someone was trying to target Lloyd, and when they couldn't find him, they took out Kira."
"So you think it was on purpose?" Kai frowned.
"Why else would the person walk in, shoot Kira and the cameras, and then leave without doing anything else?" I asked. "This wasn't a robbery at all, this was an attempted murder."
Present day...
Kai had been receiving updates about Kira from Lloyd. He had told us that she had woken up, but was unable to speak. I had been working on this case for two days and had no leads or even a clue about the suspect, so anything Kira or Lloyd could tell us would be helpful at this point.
We drove to the hospital and the staff guided us to Kira's room. I knocked on the door and Lloyd came outside.
"Kai? Skylor? What are you guys doing here?" Lloyd whispered.
"I got assigned to work this case and I need to interview you and Kira about what happened." I said.
"Kira's sleeping right now." She told us. "She can't talk, she's been writing me messages on a clipboard to communicate."
"How are you doing with all this?" Kai asked.
"A lot better now that she's awake, but she's a long way from a full recovery." Lloyd sighed. "Do you have any idea about who did this to her?"
"I've been working this case since it happened and I haven't gotten anywhere." I frowned. "I've interviewed all the other witnesses and no one got a good look at the thief."
"Well I'm sorry but I didn't either. I was trapped in the bathroom while the whole thing went down." Lloyd frowned.
"All I know is that it wasn't a robbery, someone was trying to hurt you, and when they couldn't, they went after the thing you love most." I said.
"What? Are you sure?" Lloyd panicked.
"The suspect didn't take anything from the cash register or hurt any of the other people there." I said. "You were obviously the intended target."
Lloyd looked shocked to hear this. He sat down on a chair in the hallway.
"Is there anyone you can think of that would've had it out for you or Kira? Any enemies you've made?"
"I was the green ninja, practically anyone capable of this hates me." He said frustrated.
"Then we'll need Kira's statement before we get a lead." I told Kai.
"That's gonna be kinda hard. Kira can't speak." Lloyd frowned.
"When will she be able to talk?" I asked.
"The doctors say she should recover enough to talk again soon but they don't know when. It could be hours, could be days." Lloyd frowned.
"Did she tell you anything about what the guy looked like?" Kai asked.
"No, nothing like that." He frowned. "She's only asked me about the kids and how I was doing."
"Mr Garmadon?" A nurse appeared behind Lloyd.
"Yes?" Lloyd said.
"Your wife is asking for you." She said.
"Ok. I'll be right there." He nodded.
We followed Lloyd into the room where we saw Kira on the bed with her arm in a sling and her leg in a cast. Lloyd ran up to her.
"Kira I'm so sorry, I didn't know you were awake." Lloyd frowned.
"Sk-Skylor?" She coughed to clear her throat.
"It's ok Kira, you don't have to talk if it's too hard." Lloyd said.
"N-no. I-I want to h-help." She said before coughing again.
"Kira would it be ok if I asked you a few questions about what you saw?" I asked.
She nodded and I sat down next to her. Lloyd helped her sit up and gave her some water to help her throat.
"Can you tell me anything about what the subject looked like?" I asked.
She tried to speak but did she started coughing again. Lloyd handed her a clipboard and pen but she pushed it away.
"Br-brown eyes. Brown h-hair." She managed to say.
"Anything else?" I asked.
"D-deep voice." She said.
"Did he have any scars? Tattoos? Anything specific we could use to track them?"
Kira thought for a second. I could tell she wanted to tell me something, but she couldn't string the words together. She took the clipboard from Lloyd and drew a picture of a black snake wrapped around a sword and showed it to me.
"Ta-tattoo. L-Left ankle." She said before coughing again.
"That's really helpful. Thank you Kira." I said.
She nodded and handed me the page and I wrote down everything else she told me about the suspect. We then left the room so Kira could go back to resting.
"So what happens now?" Kai asked.
"We call the news station and tell people to look out for this guy." I said. "Now that we have a description, we'll be able to narrow it down."
"I still don't understand why he would do that." Kai thought.
"Once we find this guy, we'll be able to figure out the motive." I said.
"You know this is kinda cool. I never get to see what you do at work."
"Well with the kids still not back yet, I'd rather not be alone right now." I frowned.
"Hey, they'll find a way back to us. They always do." Kai said.
"Thanks." I smiled. "I have to make a few phone calls."
"Alright, I'll go check on Lloyd. He's gotta be going through a lot right now." Kai frowned.
Kai's P.O.V.:
Skylor nodded and went to take her phone calls. I knocked on the door to Kira's room and Lloyd came outside. He seemed pretty tired.
"What now?" He rolled his eyes.
"I just wanted to see if you were ok." I frowned.
"I'm sorry Kai, I haven't been getting much sleep since Kira ended up like this." He sighed.
"Is Kira going to be alright?" I asked.
"That's the one question the doctors can't seem to answer." He sighed. "She's better than she was when she got here and she is showing signs of improvement, but there's still a long way to go before she can go home."
"So why are they so worried?"
"Because they... they think she won't be able to walk again." Lloyd frowned.
"What?"
"The bullet that shot her leg almost completely shattered the bone." Lloyd frowned. "It's going to be a long time before she can walk again, if she can at all."
"Hey, this hospital has some of the best doctors and nurses in the world."
"Yeah, but this time the best nurse here is the patient." He frowned.
"Lloyd it's ok. We're all there for you buddy."
"Thanks Kai." He slightly smiled and gave me a hug.
I couldn't imagine how Lloyd felt. All I could do was show him that I support him and that I was there for him.
"Well I better get back to her. Thanks Kai." Lloyd said.
"Hang in there buddy." I patted him on the back.
He nodded and went back into the room. Skylor came back over to me.
"Hey, is Lloyd alright?" Skylor asked.
"He's as well as he can be right now." I frowned.
"Well I just talked to Gayle and she's going to run the story on the news tonight." Skylor said. "By tomorrow morning the whole town will know who we're looking for."
"That's great." I nodded. "One thing still doesn't sit right with me though. If Lloyd and Kira weren't planning on stopping at that gas station, then how did the guy know where they were?"
"That's the part I can't figure out." She thought about it. "We need to do more research. Come on."
"Wait where are we going?" I asked.
"You'll see."
