The Training Mission

Lloyd's P.O.V.:

I was up making the kids breakfast. I was a little hurt from the accident, but thanks to Ashley I was feeling much better. The cut in my leg was nothing but a scar now and my shoulder was only dislocated so once they pushed it back in it was only a little sore.

It was a bit harder on Kira because she was hurt a lot worse than we realized. She sprained her arm and got a few broken ribs in the wreck. I felt so bad for her. Usually when I get hurt she's the one taking care of me, but this time I had to be the one taking care of her.

I looked up and saw Kira carefully coming down the stairs one step at a time clinging to the railing. As always she had a brave smile on her face, but I could tell she was in pain by the way she was holding her side.

"Kira, you shouldn't do that by yourself." I said running to her.

"No no, thank you but I got it." She continued her journey down the stairs.

"But I don't want you to trip and fall." I frowned.

Despite me trying to help her, she got down on her own. It didn't surprise me that Kira was being stubborn. She's the only person I know that's more stubborn than me, even though she would never admit that.

"How are you feeling?" I asked.

"Pretty sore but I'm alright." Kira said trying to straighten her sling.

"Here let me get that." I stood behind her and tightened up her sling. "Is that better?"

"Yeah, thanks." She said.

"Well I did learn from the best." I winked and she giggled.

"How are you feeling?"

"I feel great actually." I smiled.

"Did Ashley heal your ribs at all?" I asked.

"She did as much as she could, but I didn't want her to wear herself out."

"Alright." I said. "Sit down, let me make you some pancakes."

"You made pancakes?" She laughed.

"What? I've learned a thing or two from watching you make them for Ryder over the years."

"Well we'll let Ryder be the judge of that." She took a seat.

"You remember when Ryder was little? He used to get syrup all over his face every time he ate pancakes."

"Yeah, and he would throw his blueberries up in the air and try and catch them in his mouth." Kira laughed.

Ethan walked into the room and he seemed pretty tired. He almost walked right past us.

"Good morning Ethan. How did you sleep?" Kira asked.

"Ok I guess." He yawned.

"Want some pancakes?" I asked.

"I'm not hungry." He frowned.

"Come on, you'll feel better on a full stomach." Kira insisted.

"I said I'm not hungry!" He yelled at her.

Kira was a bit surprised and Ethan turned around and started crying as he ran up to his room. Kira and I looked at each other.

"Lloyd, his powers are getting stronger." Kira panicked. "If we don't do something soon, he'll..."

"I know. I know." I said. "We're gonna figure this out, we just need more time."

"We're running out of time." She frowned. "We have to teach him to control his powers before it's too late."

"Kira, it's not that simple. No one has had these powers for thousands of years. You can't just tell him to..."

While we were talking, the doorbell rang.

"You get the door, I'll go see if Ethan's ok." Kira said.

Since my father's visit, we were trying to do everything we could to get Ethan to sleep. We tried nightlights, stuffed animals, even letting him sleep in Ryder's room to make him feel protected, but nothing was working and his sleep deprivation was getting worse. Kira wanted to take him to a therapist, but I was worried that if people found out about his powers, they would lock him up in prison out of fear for themselves. I know he's only 4 and at this point he would never hurt anyone, but I know the citizens wouldn't take any chances if my father was involved.

That's also why I was worried about him controlling his powers, because if he couldn't, he was going to be treated like my father was. Evil for what people saw on the outside, not what's on the inside. I never want him to go through that.

I went and opened the door and saw my father standing there.

"Hello son."

"Oh, hey Dad." I smiled. "What are you doing here?"

"Well I've been thinking about what's been going on with Ethan and I think I have an idea."

"You do?" I asked

"The way I see it we only have two options. The first is, that I have to take his powers from him."

"I don't know about that, his powers aren't fully developed yet. We have no idea what will happen to either of you, if it's even possible to transfer them before they develop."

"Then the second way is I have to take him and train him on his own, to a place with no distractions. He may have better luck in a new environment."

"Where were you thinking?" I asked.

"Hiroshi's Labyrinth."

"I don't want my 4 year old in a place like that, he'll get eaten alive."

"I promise I will protect him and watch him the whole time. I won't let anything happen to him."

"If that's our only option, than I'm coming with you." I said. Then I realized something. "Oh wait, I can't. I have to take care of Kira. She got really roughed up after the car wreck."

"Dad? Who's at the door?" Ryder came downstairs. "Oh hi grandpa. What are you doing here?"

"We're discussing a... new mission." I smiled awkwardly. Then I had an idea. "Hey Ryder, why don't you take this one?"

"What's the mission?" He asked.

"It's a training mission for Ethan." My father told him. "We believe if he starts to harness his powers now, there's a lesser chance of them corrupting himself in the future."

"Ok, so what do want me to me to do?" Ryder asked.

"I want you to go with them and look after Ethan." I said. "I have to stay here and look after your mother and Ashley."

"Who knows? You might learn a thing or two yourself." My father said.

"If it's going to help Ethan get over his nightmares, then I'm in." Ryder nodded. "I'm tired of him waking me up at night."

"And you want to help your little brother too right?" I asked.

"Yeah, of course that too." He yawned.

"I'm sure Kira wouldn't mind if you borrowed her treehouse." I said.

"Borrowed it for what?" Kira asked walking into the room.

"Oh hey Mom. How's Ethan?" Ryder asked.

"He's still a little shaken up, but I think he's doing better now." She said. "What were you guys talking about?"

"We were just wondering if we could use your treehouse for a few days. I have an idea on how to train Ethan." My father told her.

"You want to take him out to Hiroshi's Labyrinth by himself?" Kira questioned. "He's only four."

"My dad and Ryder will be with him the entire time." I assured her. "Plus it's either this or my dad can take the powers from him, but at his age I'm not sure he would survive that."

"Well it does seem like the better option." Kira sighed. "Wait, why aren't you going with him?"

"Because you're still recovering from the accident and I don't want to leave you alone that long." I frowned, knowing what she was going to say.

"You don't need to take care of me, I'll be fine." She said.

"I know, but you were always there to take care of me, so I want to be there for you too." I said.

"Alright, but you better not let anything happen to him." She looked at my dad.

"I will return him safe and sound. You have my word." My dad said.

"Besides, I'll be there the whole time." Ryder told her.

"Ok, but be careful and look after your brother." Kira said.

"I will." He nodded. "I'm going to go pack."

He ran up to his room to start packing for the trip. Kira looked at me and my father.

"I hope you're right about this." She said.

"It will help." My father said. "I won't let anything happen to them."

"Now we just have to explain it to Ethan." I sighed.

"What's wrong Lloyd?" Kira asked.

"I just wish he didn't have to go through all this." I frowned. "I want him to be a normal kid while he can still remember what it's like. If we train him now, training will be all he's ever known."

"None of us want that for him, but he'll have better luck if he learns to control it now." My dad reminded me.

"Yeah, I guess you're right." I nodded.

"Come on Lloyd, let's get Ethan." Kira said.

I nodded and went back into Ethan's bedroom with Kira. We set down with him and explained to him what the plan was.

"You're not coming with me?" He looked at us.

"Ethan, this is a mission you have to tackle on your own." I explained.

"Don't worry, you'll be with Ryder and Grandpa the whole time." Kira added.

"What if I can't control it?" He looked at his hands. "What if I yell at someone again? Will you kick me out of the family?"

"Of course not. We would never think of it." Kira assured him.

"We just think your grandfather might be able to teach you more than we can." I said. "He learned how to control it and now he can teach you. You just need to trust him and listen to everything he says."

"Ryder will protect you if you run into any trouble." Kira said.

"Ok." He frowned and gave us both a hug. "I love you."

"We love you too." Kira smiled. "Stay safe out there."

We packed Ethan's bags and then we sent him, Ryder and my father off to Hiroshi's Labyrinth. I just hope it wasn't too much for Ethan to handle because if this didn't work, we were running out of options, and out of time.

Ryder's P.O.V.:

We got in my grandpa's car and he drove us deep into Hiroshi's Labyrinth until we reached Kira's treehouse. We got settled in and unpacked our stuff and then he took us on a hike through the forest.

"Be careful boys." My grandfather said. "Hiroshi's Labyrinth is a dangerous place. It's easy to get lost here so watch your step and stick together."

"Dangerous?" Ethan looked at me.

"Don't worry Ethan, I'll protect you." I grabbed his hand.

He smiled and nodded at me. We continued with the hike.

"In order to control your elemental power, you first must understand it." My grandfather said. "Just because you're the master of destruction, doesn't mean to you have to destroy everything. You can choose only to destroy the things that need to be destroyed for the greater good."

"Like what?" He asked.

"Like this."

He walked us to a tree in the middle of the forest. The tree's trunk was covered in some kind of black moss and all the leaves had fallen off of it.

"This tree is corrupted by black moss." My grandfather explained. "It is a plague that could spread to the other trees in the labyrinth unless it's cut down."

"Then call a lumberjack." I said.

"No, this is the perfect opportunity for Ethan's training." He said. "Ethan, your job is destroy the tree before the moss can spread to the other trees."

"You want me to destroy that whole tree?" Ethan's jaw dropped. "I'm just a little boy! How do you expect me to destroy that?"

"You're a lot stronger than you think you are." My grandfather smiled. "Just give it a try."

"Ok. Here goes nothing." He looked at his hands. "You can do this Ethan."

He closed his eyes and channeled his powers. I saw his hands start glowing with this weird purple energy. I had never seen anything like it before. He opened his eyes, which were now glowing the same purple color, and shot a blast of energy at the tree. The tree was uprooted and knocked over.

Ethan's eyes returned to normal and he dropped to the ground. I ran to him as he was catching his breath.

"I... I did it." He smiled as I helped him up. "How did I do that?"

"You tapped into your elemental power." My grandfather smiled. "Thanks to you, this forest will be safe for many years to come. You see, destruction doesn't have to be a bad thing, you can find a way to use your gift for good."

"I understand now Grandpa." He smiled. "Thank you."

I looked at Ethan and he was pretty tired, but he seemed happy. I gave him a piggyback ride and started carrying him. He fell asleep on my back while I was walking with my grandfather back to the treehouse.

"Grandpa, was that Ethan's true potential, or is there more to his powers?" I asked.

"Far from it my boy." He answered. "His true potential is much greater than destroying an infected tree."

"What else can his powers do?" I asked.

"Honestly I'm not sure." He answered. "When Harumi resurrected me, it gave me the same powers as the three Oni masks. It's unclear whether those powers will be given to him or not."

"Harumi? You mean Maizy's aunt?"

"Yes, but she's long gone now. We don't have to worry about her anymore."

"Ok."

I kept following my grandfather until we reached the treehouse. I set Ethan down in the bed and then I went out to my mothers old garden to pick some fruit for us to eat. As I was picking some berries, I saw someone peeking from behind a bush.

"Show yourself!" I yelled as I charged up my powers.

They peaked around the bush again and it was someone wearing dark clothes in a kabuki mask.

"Who are you?" I asked.

They immediately ran the other way and started running through the forest. I was trying to run after them, but the trees were too thick and I lost them. I started to head back to the treehouse, but I didn't know where I was. I was lost.

I saw a tall tree and tried to climb it to get a better view. I stepped on a branch that was too thin and it broke. I fell out of the tree and I passed out on the ground...

...

I came to, still in the same spot. I tried to get up, but I had injured my left ankle and I couldn't. I heard thunder in the distance so I knew it was about to storm. I had to get back to the treehouse.

"Help! Help!" I kept screaming.

After about five minutes, I realized the screaming wasn't working. I shot up a flare of green energy in hopes that my grandfather would see it, but even if he did, there's no way he would make it before it started storming.

With all the strength I had, I scooted over to the closest tree and used it to help me up. I didn't know which direction the treehouse was in, but I decided to go the opposite of where the storm clouds were, in hopes of finding shelter.

It was getting harder and harder to walk with every step. Eventually my ankle hurt so much I couldn't walk anymore. It was swollen and I couldn't move it. The storm was getting closer and it had started sprinkling rain and it was getting pretty dark. I knew I was running out of time.

I shot another burst of energy at the sky, hoping someone would see it. It started raining even harder and I started hopping as fast as I could until I tripped. I had almost passed out again until I saw another person running towards me.

"Ryder!" He shouted.

And then I passed out again...

When I woke up, I was back in the treehouse with my grandfather and my brother. They seemed happy that I was awake, but my grandfather seemed mad.

"Grandpa?" I set up and coughed. I looked at my ankle and it was wrapped up in bandages. It still hurt, but it felt a little better.

"Are you ok?" Ethan asked me.

"Yeah, I think so." I frowned.

"What were you thinking running off like that? I told you both to be careful." Grandpa said.

"There was this person. They had some kind of weird mask on and I don't know why but I had a feeling they were up to no good." I said. "I tried to chase them through the forest but I lost them and couldn't find my way back."

"Some parts of the labyrinth can play with your mind. What you saw was only an illusion."

"It felt pretty real to me." I held my head.

"You're lucky I saw your flair and it was able to find, otherwise you might still be out there." Grandpa said.

"But I've gotta find them, just to make sure they aren't causing any trouble." I tried to get up from the bed but I couldn't move my ankle. "Ow!"

"Careful, it may be broken." My grandfather said. "I think we should cut the mission short so that Ryder can get some help."

"No, you guys shouldn't stop because of me." I frowned. "I can still protect Ethan like I promised my dad I would."

"Stubborn to the core, just like a true Garmadon." Grandpa laughed. "Ok, but only if it's feeling better in the morning."

"Deal." I nodded.

He gave me some healing tea leaves and then they went to sleep. I stayed up thinking about that person I saw. Was my grandfather right and it was just an illusion? Or was I right and they're still out there somewhere? Whatever it was, I feel like it was a bad sign.
