So Close Yet So Far

Cole's P.O.V.:

Seliel called me this morning to tell me her father passed away in his sleep last night, so Allison and I were on the way to Nom to be there with her and her stepmom for the funeral. Honestly I was going to miss her father, but he had been suffering for so long that it made it easier knowing that he's gone to a better place.

"Dad?" Allison looked at me.

"Yes cupcake?" I answered.

"Does this mean we have to move to Nom?"

"I don't know yet, but your mom is going to be pretty upset for a while so try not to bug her about it."

"But I don't know anyone in Nom." She frowned. "There aren't even any kids my age there."

"We all have to make sacrifices cupcake." I told her. "Your mom made a lot of sacrifices for us, so it's our turn to return the favor."

"I guess your right." She sighed.

"Besides, we don't know what's going to happen now, but the most important thing is to be there for your mom."

"Yeah." She nodded and went back to looking out the window.

Allison didn't say anything else for the rest of the drive. I guess we were all a little upset about Albert's death, especially Seliel. We were all going to miss him, and now our lives were going to change forever, but we don't know if we're coming back.

Nya's P.O.V.:

"Come on Jay, we're gonna be late!"

"I'm coming. I'm coming." Jay ran downstairs straightening his tie.

We were trying to get out the door so we could make a good impression. Last night Jay and I got a call from the adoption agency that there was a pregnant woman downtown that liked our file and wanted to meet us in person. If she likes us, there was a good chance she would let us raise the baby.

"Mom?" Lily came downstairs rubbing her eyes. "Where are you going all dressed up?"

"Oh, um..." Jay tried to think of an excuse. "I'm taking your mother out for breakfast."

"You're dressing up to go to breakfast?" Lily questioned.

"We haven't been on a date in so long that we thought it would be fun to dress up." I said.

"Oh, alright. I'm going back to bed." She yawned and headed back up the stairs.

As soon as she was out of site, Jay and I ran to the car and he started driving to the girl's apartment.

"That was close." I said.

"Yeah." Jay said. "Remind me again why you don't want to tell the kids about this?"

"Because if we tell them and then we don't get the baby they'll be devastated." I told him. "There's no point in upsetting everyone over something that might not happen."

"I guess that makes sense, but what makes you think we won't get it? I mean, we already raised two kids and basically adopted one."

"It's not that simple. This lady is giving up her child. She could not like something about us or she could change her mind, there's a lot that could go wrong." I took a deep breath. "Sorry I'm so nervous, it's just, we've been trying for so long and I want to make our family bigger before it's too late."

"Don't worry, she's gonna love us." Jay smiled.

"I hope so." I frowned.

We arrived at the young girls apartment ready to meet her. We knocked on her door and she opened it. Her baby bump was barely noticeable, but we knew she was only a few months along.

"Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Olivia." She held out her hand.

"I'm Nya and this is my husband Jay." I shook her hand and so did Jay.

"Sorry we're late, we just couldn't get out of the house this morning." Jay apologized.

"That's alright, come in and have a seat." Olivia invited us in.

We walked into her apartment and set down on the couch. It was a studio apartment no bigger than a bedroom with a tiny bathroom in the corner.

"Would you guys like some tea or anything?"

"No thank you." I said.

"Well I'm really glad you guys came to meet me." Olivia smiled.

"It's our pleasure." I smiled. "Do you have any questions for us?"

"Actually I was wondering, you guys are elemental masters right?" She asked.

"Yes, I'm the master of lightning." Jay said.

"And I'm the master of water." I told her. "Our kids inherited our powers too."

"That's why I wanted to meet you guys." She smiled and put her hand on her stomach. "The father was an elemental master but he didn't want anything to do with the baby, and I can't afford to take care of it myself, so I needed to find someone who had experience raising elemental masters."

"What kind of powers will they have?" I asked.

"He was the elemental master of teleportation." She said. "His elemental power allowed him to go anywhere he desired."

"I've never heard of that power." Jay said.

"Yeah, but we've never heard of healing either until we met Kira." I reminded him.

"True." Jay nodded. "We'll see if our friends can help research it."

"And if you still want to stay in touch with us, that would be fine." I said. "In fact, the boy we took in before had an uncle that came in later and he now sees him once a week."

"That would be really nice." Olivia smiled. "I wanted to meet you just to make sure, but I don't think I'm gonna meet a couple that's as good as you to raise this baby."

I smiled and gave Jay the biggest hug. We were finally gonna have another baby, even if it's not in the way we planned, it would still be amazing to give a home to a baby that needed it.

Skylor's P.O.V.:

I got in my cop car and headed over to Yang's temple. That was the old VKA base, so I figured I would start there. I wasn't going to call for backup yet because I wasn't sure if they were there or not. Plus I'm still the new girl so I don't want to divert the rest of the squad here unless I was right about this.

I got to the house and parked my car behind a bush so that they couldn't see it. I snuck up to one of the windows and looked inside the house. Sure enough, I found the remaining members of the VKA and the man I was looking for.

"Attention all units, this is officer Smith, NCPD. I have eyes on the escapee. Requesting backup at yang's temple asap. The rest of the VKA are also in sight." I whispered into my radio.

"This is Officer Parker, I'm on route now. 10 minutes out. Over." One of the other officers responded.

"10-4." I said before putting the radio back in my pocket.

I'm not usually one to ask for help, but this time I was going in five against one, so it was probably safer than going in by myself.

I decided to keep watching and wait for backup, but that plan was quickly ruined when Akamu saw me peaking through the window.

"You!" He yelled angrily.

He charged himself at the window, braking the glass and landing on top of me. I was able to kick him back and get up to fight him. He took a few swings that I was able to dodge, but I got distracted by some spell Lena was casting. Akamu then saw the opportunity to kick me in the side and pin me down.

"Where is she? Where are you hiding my daughter?" He demanded.

"I'll... never... tell..." I tried to speak, but couldn't find my breath.

"Tell me now or I'll..."

Before he could finish his sentence, him and all of the VKA teleported away. I wanted to get back up, but I was so tired I passed out...

I woke up still at the scene and saw another officer in front of me. My side really hurt and my head was pounding so hard.

"Hey are you alright?" He asked.

"Yeah, just a little shaken up." I answered sitting up and holding my side. "How long was I out?"

"I don't know, I found you like this." He frowned.

I looked up and realized how dark it was. "Wait, what time is it?"

"10:30." He said.

"What? My family was expecting me two hours ago. I have to go home." I stood up. I was so dizzy and my side hurt more than I thought it did. "Ow!"

"Hey take it easy." The officer said. "You're in pretty bad shape."

"You didn't tell anyone about this did you?"

"I told the commissioner but that was it. I used to be an EMT so I knew you weren't hurt too badly. Plus I didn't think you'd want the whole squad to know you lost a fight on your first day." He winked.

"I appreciate that Officer..." I couldn't remember his name.

"Edward Parker, but everyone calls me Eddie." He offered me a handshake.

"Skylor Smith." I shook his hand. "Now if you don't mind, I need to be with my family."

"Do you need a ride home?" He asked.

"Thanks, but I'll be alright." I said before limping t0 my car.

I finally got to my car and drove home. Hopefully Kai and the kids weren't too worried about me.
