Return of the Overlord: Part 1
Kira's P.O.V.:
After we all got a good night's sleep, I insisted on taking my family to the hospital to get them checked out just in case. Ashley and Ethan were fine, but we wanted to do a check up just to be sure. Neither of them had ever used that much power before. Lloyd had slipped a disc in his back and was able to get the treatment he needed. The doctor said in a few weeks he would be back to normal, which was a relief.
As for Ryder, he had a lasting cough from his airways being cut off for so long. They said that it would last a few weeks and gave him an inhaler in case he had any trouble breathing. He also had three broken ribs from how hard I pressed when I gave him CPR. They told him to rest and take it easy for the next month, but he was not happy about that.
"But I'm the green ninja. I have a responsibility to protect Ninjago." Ryder said to the doctor.
"I'm sorry young man, but with everything you've been through I'm afraid you'll have to take some time off." She said.
"Time off? But my team..." He coughed and held his ribs again.
I looked at my son on that bed. He looked like he was in so much pain and I felt like I was responsible for it. I excused myself and ran into the hallway. Lloyd followed me.
"Kira what's wrong?" He asked me.
"I hate seeing him like that." I frowned. "I hurt him Lloyd. I hurt our son."
"I know you feel guilty, but you shouldn't." He said. "Our son is alive because of you. If you weren't there who knows what would've happened?"
"I know, but I still hurt him." I frowned. "And thanks to me, he won't be able to lead his team for a long time."
"But thanks to you, he's also alive. He knows that and he doesn't blame you for anything."
"I know he's not mad, but I still can't get over blaming myself for hurting our child."
"Harumi hurt our child, all you did was save him and we're all thankful you did, especially Ryder. Sure he'll be out of commission for a few weeks, but even he would agree that's better than being gone forever."
"I guess, I just wish I could do something to make it up to him." I frowned.
"I'm sure he'll be fine either way, but I'm sure he's happy that he's alive."
Once I cheered up a bit we went back into the room. The doctor gave them all permission to go home so we got all the kids in the car and took them back to the monastery. When we got there, Ethan and Ashley went inside, but Ryder stopped in the courtyard and walked towards the training equipment.
"Ryder what are you doing?" I asked.
"It's one o'clock, I always train at one o'clock." He said.
"What? No bud, you need to rest today." Lloyd said.
"No, I can't rest. The overlord is still at large and I have to find him before he takes over N-Ninjago." He coughed again and leaned on the wall. He held his ribs.
"I think you should skip it today son. Here let me help." I said helping him up.
"No I got it." Ryder insisted.
He got up and tried to train with the practice dummies. He tried to spark up his powers, but they didn't work.
"What?" He looked at his hands. He tried again but also failed to spark them up. He looked at Lloyd with a panic. "Dad, my powers aren't working. Why aren't they working?"
"I'm sure they'll come back bud, but you need to give it time." Lloyd told him.
"Maybe if I keep training they'll come back?" He looked at the training equipment.
"Ryder you've been through a lot. All you need is a little rest." I said.
"Are you grounding me from training now?" Ryder rolled his eyes.
"We should, but it seems like you've been punished enough." Lloyd said.
Yeah we know we should give him some kind of punishment for going in alone and putting Ethan and himself in danger, but after what happened, we were just so happy they survived that we didn't have the heart to punish them.
"Come on Ryder, let's get you inside. It looks like it's going to rain anyway." I said.
"Ok fine." He reluctantly agreed.
We helped him inside and got him into bed. Ryder didn't want to stay, but I made him. I changed his bandages on his ribs and got him some ice for the pain. Then I left and let him get some rest. All I could do now was make him comfortable.
I heard the doorbell ring and I opened it to see Katie standing there with a box of chocolates.
"Oh hi Katie. I'm sorry but Ryder..."
"I know, I heard." She interrupted me. "Can I see him please? I wanna make sure he's ok."
"You know what, I'm sure a visit from you will cheer him up." I agreed.
Normally I wouldn't let her in while Ryder was supposed to be resting, but he was so depressed right now and I felt so guilty. I thought if I made an exception this one time, it would make him feel better.
Ryder's P.O.V.:
I was in my bed trying to get some sleep, but I couldn't stop thinking about what my team was about to go through. This was going to be the biggest battle ever, and I can't even be there to help prepare them. And now I'm not even sure if my powers work anymore. What am I going to do?
My mother entered my room and stuck her head in the door. I looked up at her.
"I'm fine Mom, you don't need to keep checking in on me." I said.
"Ok, I just thought you might want a visitor." My mother smiled.
"Visitor?" I looked up.
Katie walked in behind her holding a heart shaped box in her hand. The biggest smile appeared on my face.
"Hey greenie." Katie winked and walked over to the bed.
"Katie!" I hugged her. "What are you doing here?"
"Well I heard you got hurt and I wanted to come by and make sure you were ok." She said.
"Thanks. I really appreciate that." I smiled.
"Here, I know you have a sweet tooth so I got you these." She handed me the box.
I opened it and it was an assortment of chocolates. It was really nice of her.
"Wow, thanks." I smiled. "My favorite."
My mom left us alone and Katie and I got to talking. She said she was just there to keep me company, but I really wanted to get back in action.
"So what exactly happened back there?" Katie asked me.
"Honestly I don't remember much. I was unconscious for most of it." I said.
"Why did you go in by yourself?"
"Because Harumi said if I didn't she was going to hurt Zach and Maizy, but Ethan decided to stowaway in my car and by the time I found out it was too l-late." I coughed. I tried not to let her see me holding my ribs, but they hurt.
"Can I get you something?" She asked.
"No no, you being here is enough." I smiled, but I noticed she kept looking at my eyes. "What's wrong?"
"It's just, your eyes. They used to be a bright green but now they're black."
"What?"
"Look."
She picked up a mirror and handed it to me. I looked at my face and Katie was right. My eyes had turned black.
"It probably has something to do with my powers not working." I frowned.
"Your powers aren't working?" Katie questioned.
"I tried to use them earlier but they didn't work." I frowned. "My dad said that they would come back but probably not before the Overlord gets here."
"The Overlord?" She questioned.
"He's the creation of pure evil." I said. "I don't know how but he's back and so is Harumi. If I don't have my powers and I can't lead my team, how am I supposed to defeat him?"
"You'll find a way, you always do." Katie said.
"Thanks, but I don't even know where to start." I sighed.
"You can start by getting some rest."
"What?"
"Ryder you've been through so much. If you want to get back out there, you need to reserve all the strength you have left."
"Ok." I sighed and laid back down.
Katie was nice enough to fluff my pillow and then she tucked me into bed and kissed me on the cheek. I appreciated the gesture even though it did make me feel a bit like a child. The ironic thing is I'm a whole year and half older than Katie. It's ok though, I like that she cares so much about me.
Lloyd's P.O.V.:
I was in the bedroom looking out the window at the clouds outside. There was something off about them but I wasn't sure what.
"Hey." Kira walked into our bedroom. "How are you feeling?"
"Better, who was at the door?" I asked.
"Oh that was Katie. She wanted to see Ryder and I know he's supposed to be resting but he seemed so depressed and I feel so guilty and she's a really nice girl and she makes Ryder so happy and..."
"Kira it's ok." I laughed. "I would have let her in too."
"Ok." She calmed down. "What are you looking at?"
"I just can't shake how dark those clouds look."
"What do you mean?"
"They just don't look right." I kept staring at them. "I know it just looks like a storm, but something feels different, like I've seen them before."
"Lloyd I think you need to get some rest."
"I'm not crazy, I know these mean something, but what?"
I kept looking out the window at the darkened sky. We heard thunder and saw lightning, not just any lightning, it was purple lightning.
"See I knew it!" I yelled. "We've gotta warn everyone."
"Yeah, but what about Ryder?" Kira frowned. "He needs to rest before he can get back to leading the team."
"If this is the Overlord we're dealing with, then they'll need something stronger."
"What exactly?"
"Oni power." I frowned.
"You mean it's all up to Ethan?" She frowned.
I sadly nodded. We both knew Ethan was much too young for this, but we didn't have a choice. We had to teach them all to unlock their Oni forms. It was our only chance.
Lily's P.O.V.:
Something weird had been going on with my parents lately. When we got home from the mission last night, there were boxes all over the place that came from the attic, mostly filled with mine and Jax's baby stuff. Matt keeps seeing my dad downstairs working on building a new room down there. And yesterday Jax told me he saw a bunch of small clothes in the dryer. It was all really weird, so I decided to call a family meeting and had my parents sit down with Jax, Matt and I.
"I don't understand Lily, what is this about?" My father asked.
"Oh I think you know." I crossed my arms.
"We know there's something going on, something you're not telling us." Jax said.
"Yeah, like why your building a new room in the basement." Matt said.
"And why I saw baby clothes in the wash." Jax added.
"And why all our baby stuff is out." I added.
My parents looked at each other. My mom gave my dad a nod and a smile. They held hands and smiled at us.
"Well, we didn't want to tell you guys until we were sure, but now that we are..." My dad looked at Mom.
"Your dad and I are adopting a baby." My mom smiled.
Our looks of confusion turned into looks of excitement.
"What? You're adopting a baby?" Jax asked surprised.
"There's this pregnant lady in Ninjago City. She doesn't have enough room or money to raise the baby by herself, so she is going to let us adopt it." My mom said.
"What brought this on?" Matt asked.
"Well you guys are growing up so fast. You're not kids anymore and we miss having babies around, so we found a baby that needs a good home and we want to help give them one."
"Please tell me it's a girl this time." I begged.
"We'll have to wait and see." My dad said.
"Well either way, I'm excited." I smiled.
We all gave my parents a big hug. I think it was safe to say we were all excited about the new baby.
Axel's P.O.V.:
The overlord's presence was getting stronger. Ever since Ryder and Ethan took down Harumi and Akamu, the visions had been getting worse. I was having Borg do a diagnostic scan to see if he could find any abnormalities in my systems.
"Hmm?" Borg said looking at the results.
"Is that bad?" I frowned.
"No no, I just discovered the root of your problem." Borg said. "It seems the Overlord's recent attempt to hack into your systems left a glitch in the firewall. Luckily I created a patch for just this situation, just a quick download and you'll be good as new."
"That's a relief, but why am I still getting those visions?"
"Well your anxiety levels seem to be higher than normal. Probably a side effect to the hacking attempt, but it seems to me that most of those visions were all in your head."
"But how? They feel so real." I held my head.
"Well maybe they'll stop after we get you repaired."
Borg took a few minutes to download patch and fix the glitch in my firewall. My systems definitely felt better, but I was still afraid that the Overlord was going to come for me.
Later that day, Borg invited the Julians over to update their firewalls to make sure the Overlord couldn't hack them too. While they were here, I pulled Alex into my bedroom.
"What is going on?" Alex asked.
"The Overlord is after me." I told him.
"What?"
"I know he can't get to me anymore, but I just feel like he's planning something."
"How often do you get those visions?"
"Oh only every day." I frowned.
"Have you told Borg? He may be able to help."
"Borg wouldn't understand this. He's not a Nindroid, that's why I came to you."
"I have had a few visions, but not nearly as much as my dad has. He may more about this than me."
"No!" I yelled. "Do not tell anyone about this, please, I beg of you."
"Ok, but why not?" He asked.
"I do not want them to know I'm afraid."
"Why?"
"Because they will think I'm weak." I frowned.
"They will only want to help you, I am sure of it." Alex said. "If the overlord is really back and we don't tell them, it will just make things worse."
"Ok." I sighed.
Alex and I went back to the lab with Borg and his parents. I told them all about my fears and what's been happening. They didn't seem mad like I expected, they just looked concerned.
"Axel, are you sure this is the overlord?" Borg asked.
"Yes." I frowned. "I know you fixed me but I can't shake the feeling he might be coming back."
"If he attempted to hack your systems, then he must be on the rise again." Pixal said.
"But why? What does he want?" Alex asked.
"I do not know, but I know how we can find out." Pixal said. "Borg, is it possible to temporarily turn off Axel's firewall?"
"There's a simple code that can disable it, but why?" He asked.
"If the overlord has tried to hack Axel before, it means he must want something from him. If we turn it off just long enough to find out what it is, then we'll have a better chance of defeating him."
"You mean the only way to figure out how to defeat him is for me to get hacked again." I frowned.
"You're his creation, if he'll tell anyone his plan, it would be you." Zane said.
"It will only be for a few minutes and then I'll turn it back on." Borg said.
"Axel, we would never ask you do this if you don't want to, but as of right now I don't see any other option." Pixal said.
I had to think. If I turn off my firewall, there's a chance I could become evil again, but if I didn't, then the team wouldn't stand a chance. I had to make a decision for the good of Ninjago.
"Ok, let's do it."
To be continued...
