More to Life than Surviving: Part 2

Kira's P.O.V.:

I was at the monastery waiting on Lloyd and Ryder to get home. It was way past when they usually get here so I was starting to worry. I was about to call Lloyd, but then I got a call from Ava.

"Hello?" I picked up the phone.

"Hi Kira, this is Ava Jones, I'm calling to see about who was supposed to pick up Ryder from the clinic today?" She said.

"Lloyd was supposed to pick him up about an hour ago." I looked at my watch. "Didn't he come by?"

"No, that's why I'm calling." Ava said. "I figured he got stuck behind that big wreck, but I thought you would call if that was the case."

"Wreck?" I questioned.

"Haven't you heard? It's all over the news."

"I had no idea." I frowned. "Did you try to call Lloyd?"

"I tried, but he didn't pick up." Ava said. "It's the end of my shift so I can drive Ryder home if you want."

"That would be a big help, thanks Ava." I said as I hung up the phone.

I immediately called Lloyd and he didn't pick up. Then I turned on the TV and turned it straight to the news. It said that a car had run the red light and got T-boned by a car coming the other way. It said that one of the drivers had been taken to the hospital and the other one only had minor injuries. At first it wasn't a big deal, but then they showed the car on camera and I knew what had happened.

"Lloyd." I looked at the TV.

"What happened?" Misako walked in and asked.

"Ava called and said Lloyd never showed up to get Ryder." I looked at her.

"That doesn't sound like Lloyd." Misako said.

"I know, that's why I'm worried." I sighed. "He's not answering his phone and no one has seen him. I need to go to the hospital and see if that's him."

"What about Ryder?" Misako frowned.

"Ava will take him here." I told her. "I'll call you as soon as I find out."

"Alright, we'll take a cab and meet you there if it's him. Good luck." Misako nodded.

"Thanks, he'll need it." I sighed.

I got in my car and immediately went to the hospital. I ran in the door and my friend Ronnie was already there.

"Ronnie!" I ran up to her.

"Oh wow! Look how big you've gotten!" She looked at my stomach.

"Never mind that." I dismissed. "Is Lloyd here? I think he got in a car wreck."

"Let me see." She walked over and checked the computer. "He's here and he's stable."

"How is he?"

"Whiplash, broken ribs, black eye, concussion, and he hurt his ankle pretty bad. We haven't gotten the X-rays back on that yet." She said looking at his record.

"Is he awake?"

"Yes but he's in a lot of pain." Ronnie frowned.  "You can see him if you want. Room 104."

"Thank you."

That was all I needed to hear. I bolted to his room and ran inside the door.

"Kira? Is that you?" Lloyd sat up and groaned in pain.

"Lloyd lay back down." I said as set next to him. "Stay still, I'm gonna heal you."

"Kira you can't. The baby..." Lloyd coughed.

Lloyd was right. Nya and Skylor said that their powers didn't work when they were in second trimester of their pregnancies. So even if Lloyd wanted me to heal him, I couldn't.

"Oh right. Sorry." I frowned.

"It's ok." Lloyd smiled. Then he realized something. "Oh no, I never picked up Ryder."

"Relax, Ava drove him home and your mom is gonna bring him here later."

"Oh great, my mom is gonna be so mad at me for crashing her car." He frowned.

"Your mom is just gonna be happy that you're ok." I reminded him.

"How did you know I was here?"

"Ava called me when you didn't pick up Ryder." I told him. "She didn't know if you were in the accident but I put the pieces together."

"I'm sorry I made you come to work on your day off." Lloyd frowned.

"I don't care, as long as you're ok." I said. "Let me look at that ankle."

He nodded and I looked at his ankle. It was really swollen and when I touched it he flinched. It was hard to tell if it was broken or just a bad sprain.

"What's the diagnosis doc?" Lloyd looked at me.

"Well I'll have to wait for the X-ray to be sure but I know you won't be able walk on it for a while." I said.

"Oh man, that doesn't work." Lloyd frowned. "How am I gonna help you with the baby?"

"She's not here yet, we can worry about that later. Right now the only thing I need is for you to rest and get better." I said.

I lifted Lloyd's ankle and put under it to keep it elevated. I was about to get him some ice and all of a sudden I felt a sharp pain in my stomach. It was probably just a contraction so I tried to ignore it so I didn't freak Lloyd out. That was the last thing he needed.

"Kira?" Lloyd looked at me holding my stomach. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah, the baby's kicking, that's all." I said, but then it got worse so I screamed.

"Are you sure? It sounds like a contraction."

"But I can't be in labor. She's not due for three months." I said sitting in a chair.

"It's a Braxton Hicks contraction. It's not dangerous and it doesn't mean the baby's coming." Lloyd told me.

"How did you know that?"

"Harumi got them when she was pregnant with Ryder." He answered. "Do your breathing exercises. This is good practice for when you go into labor."

I nodded and started breathing. After a few minutes, the contraction stopped and I felt a lot better.

"Did it stop?" Lloyd asked.

"Yeah, I think so." I took a deep breath. "Thank you Lloyd. I don't know what I would do without you."

"Hey, you're the one doing all the work." He laughed.

"Yeah, but you're making this a lot easier on me." I smiled. "And I'm glad I didn't lose you today."

"I just hope Ryder isn't too mad at me." He frowned.

"Why would he be mad at you?"

"Because I promised to pick him up and I never came." He frowned. "He's right, I am never there for him."

"Lloyd this wasn't your fault."

"Yes it was!" He frowned. "I had so much on my mind that I got distracted and ran the red light."

"It's ok, nobody else got hurt."

"What about the other driver that slammed into me?" He looked at me.

"The news said he only had minor injuries." I told him. "And he was the one who made the 911 call after you passed out."

"Then he's ok?"

"It had more impact on you than it did on him." I said.

Misako sent me a text saying her and Ryder were at the front desk and that Ava had given them a ride. I told them what room we were in and she said they were on their way up.

"Your mom and Ryder are here." I told Lloyd.

"Are they mad?"

"Not at all, they're just glad you're ok."

Suddenly Ryder bursted in the door and ran over to hug Lloyd. At first I was worried he might hurt him, but Lloyd seemed more than happy with the gesture.

"Hey bud." Lloyd smiled. "Sorry I never came to pick you up."

"It's ok Daddy, I forgive you." Ryder kept hugging him. "Are you ok?"

"Don't worry about me bud, I'll be fine." He smiled.

"Ryder, wait up!" Misako yelled and ran in after him. "Sorry Lloyd, he was just really excited to see you."

"That's ok Mom." Lloyd looked at her. "I'm so sorry. I promise I'll pay to fix your car."

"I don't care about the car, it's you I'm worried about." She said as she came closer to him. "Are you hurt?"

"Nothing too bad." He said.

"Can you do the healing magic to make him better?" Ryder looked at me.

"Sorry buddy, my powers aren't working right now." I told him. "Don't worry, I can still help your dad the old fashioned way."

"Can I help?" Ryder asked.

"Sure you can." I smiled.

"Hey bud you know what would help me?" Lloyd said.

"What?" He looked at his dad.

"Could you go to the cafeteria and get us some ice cream?" He smiled.

"Oh yeah daddy! I can do that!" Ryder said tugging on Misako's arm. "Let's go Grandma!"

"Ok ok." Misako laughed and let herself be dragged out of the room.

"Ok, what's wrong?" I looked at Lloyd.

"This morning, Ryder asked me to take him to see Harumi."

"What?" I was shocked.

"I know, now you see what's been on my mind all day." He frowned.

"Well he seems pretty calm now." I noticed. "Maybe Ava made a breakthrough in his therapy session today."

"He does seem like he's in a better mood." Lloyd said. "Let's not ask him about it, it would probably just make things worse."

"Agreed, I'll call Ava later to see if anything happened."

"Ok." Lloyd nodded and held his head.

"Lightheaded?"

"I'm dizzy." He frowned.

"Have you eaten anything today?" I asked.

"No, I had to skip breakfast to find Ryder."

"Then your blood sugar is probably low from all the stress you've dealt with today. That ice cream Ryder's getting for you might be more helpful than you thought."

"Well I was hungry." He laughed.

Ryder came back into the room with ice cream for everyone and Misako walked in behind him.

"Here Daddy." Ryder handed him the chocolate ice cream cone. "It's your favorite."

"Thanks bud." Lloyd smiled and took the cone. "How was therapy today?"

"Fine." Ryder shrugged.

"Kira." Misako got my attention. "I ran into the doctor in the hallway. He wants to talk to you."

"Oh, alright." I looked at Lloyd. "Will you be ok?"

"I'll be fine, go." Lloyd smiled.

I kissed his cheek and I went outside to talk to the doctor. It was a doctor I worked with all the time so I knew him pretty well.

"Hi Kira." Dr. Harris said.

"Hi, my mother in law said you wanted to talk to me?"

"Yes, I wanted to talk to you about the X-ray we took of your husband's ankle." He said showing me his tablet.

"That looks like a break to me." I sighed, knowing that this was going to be a long recovery that we didn't have time for.

"A small surgery may speed up the process but the recovery time will be about the same so it's up to you guys really. Either way you should be able to take him home tomorrow morning." He told me.

"Once I have this baby, my powers will be back and I can heal him."

"Yes but that's three months away. Lloyd needs rest, physical therapy, and care around the clock, it's gonna take a long time to get him back on his feet."

"And I will take care of him as always." I reminded him. "I got him through his coma two years ago and I can get him through this."

"That's actually why I pulled you out here." He said. "That baby is gonna keep you busy and now you've got Lloyd and his son to worry about."

"And your point is...?"

"It might be smart to not take all of this on by yourself. You might want to look into hiring part time help."

"Thanks, but that won't be necessary." I said. "I have got this all under control."

"You may think so now but it's gonna get harder the closer you get to your due date."

"And if it does, I'll deal with it. I'm a nurse and people rely on me to take care of them, I don't need anyone to take care of me. Ok?"

"Alright." He closed his tablet. "See you later Kira."

"Bye."

I walked back into the room, slightly frustrated from the conversation. How could he think I couldn't handle this by myself? He doesn't know what he's talking about.

"You ok honey?" Lloyd asked.

"Oh, yeah, I'm fine." I nodded. "Dr. Harris said you can probably go home tomorrow."

"That's great." Misako smiled. "Did he say anything about Lloyd's ankle?"

"He showed me the X-ray and it's definitely broken." I sighed. "You'll be on crutches for a few weeks and then you can get a walking boot. You'll also need a few months of physical therapy to build your muscles back up."

"Will I be back to normal before the baby comes?" He asked.

"If everything goes to plan yes, but that means you need a lot of rest and don't hesitate to ask for help. Ok?" I looked at him.

Lloyd sighed. "Alright."

"Don't worry Daddy, I can help take care of you." Ryder said.

Lloyd giggled. "Thanks bud."

At that point, visiting hours were up so we said our goodbyes to Lloyd I drove Misako and Ryder home. Now that Lloyd was hurt, I was gonna have to do everything else. Take care of Ryder, deal with my pregnancy and when he's home help Lloyd with his recovery. This was gonna be a tough next few months, but I'd rather deal with all of this than plan for a funeral and a life without Lloyd.

Two days later...

Lloyd's P.O.V.:

It had been two days since my accident and I was home with my family now. I was happy to be out of the hospital, but it was a struggle. I had use crutches to get around the house, my ribs hurt every time I move the wrong way, and it took me half an hour to get from the kitchen to the living room without help.

It had been even harder on Kira. Her pregnancy had been really hard on her and now that I couldn't do anything, she had to handle everything herself. It was killing me that I couldn't help her.

"Lloyd, I'm home." Kira came into the room in her scrubs. She had been working a lot more than she needed to. "How are you feeling?"

"I'm fine, my mom and Ryder have been taking care of me." I said noticing the cast on her wrist that wasn't there yesterday. "What happened to your wrist?"

"Oh, I tried to lift a box and dropped it on my hand." Kira said.

"You shouldn't be doing any heavy lifting." I frowned. "You could've thrown your back out."

"It's just a sprain, no big deal." Kira shrugged and started checking on me.

"It could have been a lot worse if you hurt your back. It could've hurt the baby."

"Relax, the baby's fine." She yawned.

"You look tired." I frowned.

"No, I'm fine."

"If you want to change and grab a shower, go ahead. I can wait." I told her.

"You're very sweet but I'm fine." She continued her check up. "Have you walked around at all today?"

"A couple trips to the bathroom but not much else."

"Have you eaten?" She asked.

"Yes Mom and Ryder made me breakfast in bed and then we ordered a pizza for lunch." I answered.

She asked me a bunch other questions about my day that I honestly didn't care much about, but Kira was just trying to make sure that there was no lasting damage from my concussion. Plus it sounds like she had a hard day so I wasn't gonna argue with her and say something I might regret later.

"Well it sounds like you're doing pretty well." Kira said.

"Yeah, you have nothing to worry about. I'm more worried about you."

"Me? Why?" She asked.

"Because you've been working all day and then you have to come back to do the same to me that you do to your patients at work." I frowned. "Not to mention your dealing with the baby."

"I'm fine Lloyd, I can handle everything." Kira said taking a deep breath and sitting on the bed.

"Are you sure?" I set up and tried not to groan from the pain of my ribs.

"Yeah." She nodded and helped me sit up. "Come on, let's get you to the car so I can take you to physical therapy."

"You scheduled it right now?" I questioned. "You just got home."

"Between my doctors appointments, Ryder's therapy sessions, and my job there was no other time to do it." Kira shrugged.

She got up and got my crutches for me. I wanted to tell her not to, but she's in nurse mode. There's no arguing with her when she's in nurse mode, especially right now.

She helped me out of bed and after what felt like a day's journey to the car, she helped into the front seat. Kira got on the driver's side and maneuvered into the seat. It wouldn't be long until she was too big to fit behind the steering wheel and wasn't gonna be able to drive for a few months, but knowing her, she was gonna push her limits as long as she could.

"Are you sure you can drive?" I looked at her. "I'm sure my mom wouldn't mind taking me if you wanted to rest."

"No, I'm good." Kira dismissed. "You're my husband and I want to take care of you."

"Ok." I frowned. "I'm just worried you're gonna ware yourself out if you don't take care of yourself."

"I won't, I know what I'm doing." She said as she started the car.

"Ok." I frowned.

I didn't dare say another word. I love Kira, but her pregnancy had been causing some mood swings. She was stretching herself too thin and I was afraid she was going to hurt herself if she kept it up. I knew that she wasn't going to ask for help, so I had to do something else.

>>>>>>Lloyd's phone<<<<<<

Lloyd: Hey Nya.

Nya: Hey Lloyd, your mom told
everybody what happened. How
are you feeling?

L: I'm doing alright, it's
Kira I'm worried about.

N: What happened?

L: She's in her second trimester.

N: Oof, I remember that
nightmare. 😩

L: It's just she's trying to do
everything at once and I'm
worried she's not taking
care of herself.

N: What makes you say that?

L: She's taking care of everyone.
She's having to take care of me
and Ryder, drive us around, she's
working double shifts, and today
she sprained her wrist at work.

N: Oh boy. That's bad.

L: I know and she refuses to
rest or let anyone help her.

N: Is that why you texted me?

L: I can't get her to listen to me,
maybe you can do something?

N: I'm happy to pitch in where I can,
but as for getting Kira to listen, you're
on your own with that.

L: Anything you can do would
be helpful. I haven't told Kira yet
but I arranged for Ryder to start
kindergarten in the fall.

N: Wow, that's a big step.

L: Yeah, Kira's gonna be busy with the
baby so I figured getting Ryder out of
the house a little would be good. Plus I
want him to be around kids his own
age. It might be good for him too.

N: I think that's a great idea.

L: Yeah but we're gonna have
to drive him and pick him up.

N: I know Amber is starting
first grade so I'll talk to Kai
about picking him up too.

L: Thanks Nya.

N: I'll see what else I can do to
help you out. I have a few ideas.

L: I thought you might. Well I
got to go. See you later Nya.

N: Bye Lloyd, don't push
yourself too hard.

L: I won't. 🙄

I put my phone down and realized we were here. I had done physical therapy before after I woke up from my coma, but that was a few years ago. Although it was gonna be tough, I needed to do this for my wife, my son, and my soon to be daughter.
