Day 2| "Let's Dance - Un-Princess Style!"

It's day two! Candy time! 🍬🍭🍬🍭

Prompt: AU

I present to you a Ninjago royal AU. And I'm not gonna lie, I was inspired by the song "Living For The Rhythm" by L2M.

🍁•🍁•🍁•🍁

"1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3 and 1, 2, 3, 1– OW!"

"Sorry!"

Queen Maya shook her head, her raven tresses moving from side to side. "Not again, Nya."

The dance teacher stopped tending to his foot and huffed, folding his arms. He switched off the music player and turned to the Queen. "Assez! Maybe I should be back when your daughter eez actually interested in dancing," he announced in a thick french accent.

"But Monsieur Pierre, the ball is in a few days! You said you won't quit till Nya was perfect. Are you really giving up now?" Asked the exasperated queen.

"Oui! You 'eard me, Your Majesty. I won't be back unless zis clumsy goose is ready to learn 'ow to be a graceful swan!" He then raised his nose in the air and strided out of the ballroom. "Bonne journée!"

Queen Maya glared at her daughter who nervously bit her lip. She ran her manicured fingers through her short black hair that hung just above her shoulders and waited for her mother's scolding.

Her mother, however, dropped her angry scowl and sighed. "Sweetie, how many times are we going to go through this?" She asked.

The princess scoffed and looked away. "Dancing's just not my thing, Mom!" She complained, picking up her tiara from a nearby sofa and unceremoniously putting it on her head.

"Strike three! You lose – again!" came a teasing voice from behind her. Both mother and daughter turned to the doors of the ballroom from which entered Princess Nya's older brother, Prince Kai, followed by her father, King Raymond.

"I believe that would be strike forty considering the last thirty-nine times Monsieur Pierre has stormed out of the palace," joked King Ray. He and Kai high-fived one another before the prince whipped out his phone and snapped a picture of his sister in her dance attire and lopsided tiara.

Nya frowned at him and tried to snatch the phone from the prince but he quickly stuffed it out of sight. "Maybe you shouldn't be ticking the poor dude off, sis," the boy advised, straightening the princess's tiara. "After all, teaching the Princess was going to be 'ze pinnacle of 'is career'," Kai said, doing a terrible french impersonation of the dance teacher.

King Ray frowned at his son. "Kai, that's enough," he warned him. He then turned to his daughter and smiled warmly. "Nya, go get ready. We are having dinner with Lord Chen this evening."

The prince perked up at this. He looked away from editing his sister's photo on his phone and stared at his father. "We are?! Tonight?!" The king nodded in reply. Kai muttered something about his hair and dashed out of the room.

"Why is he so excited?" Queen Maya questioned, staring after her son's running figure. Nya snickered to which the queen gave a death glare. Princesses don't snicker, apparently. Nya revealed the news nonetheless. "He has a crush on his daughter."

The king stopped in his tracks from pacing the floor and the queen furrowed her black eyebrows. "Lord Chen's daughter? Skylor?" She voiced her guess.

"Mm-hm," the princess nodded. Her father made a noise expressing disbelief. "Then what was the point of setting up an entire ball to find a future wife for Kai?" He asked his queen.

Nya stopped smiling and stared at her parents as if they'd comitted murder. "But you said that the ball was for Kai's birthday and coronation!" She stated, raising her voice. "There was nothing about finding a wife!"

Queen Maya rolled her eyes at the stupidity of her husband and her daughter's ignorance. "Of course it's for his birthday and coronation. But there's always the chance he'll find love," she replied, smiling.

"But he already likes Skylor," Nya spoke in her brother's defence.

"Then does that mean we cancel the ball?" Her mother countered.

"Does Kai know about this?" Nya enquired even though she already knew the answer.

Both her parents shook their heads slowly. "He'll go ballistic if he finds out we're using his coronation as an excuse to find a suitable wife," King Ray quickly added. "I know I did."

The queen glanced at her husband sourly before walking over to Nya and placing her hands on her shoulders. "Darling, the point is that you have to perfect your dancing skills before the ball."

"But Mom, I–"

The queen shook her head. "No buts. Now, go get ready. Our guests will be coming soon." She kissed Nya on the forehead before gently pushing her towards the door.

As they watched their daughter slowly walk out, King Ray leaned closer to his wife and whispered, "Sooo . . . should I call Chen to fix the wedding date?"

Queen Maya looked at him from the corners of her eyes before sighing in annoyance and leaving. The king scratched his head, standing alone in the ballroom. "What?"

Kai and Nya both sat at the long table in the hall, finishing their dinner. The king and queen had quickly eaten their meals and had retired to their room.

Probably planning that stupid ball, Nya thought bitterly. She attacked her vegetables and ate them with such anger that her brother had to look up in order to inquire why her mood was off.

"What's up with you?" He asked, his mouth full of lettuce leaves sprinkled with salad dressing. Nya threw her fork down on the table and pushed her plate away. "I have to practice that stupid dance routine for your stupid engagement party," she fumed.

The prince, however, choked on his lemon mint juice upon hearing her words. "Engagement?!" He blurted out after recovering from his coughing fit.

His sister stuttered before saying, "Uh, no! I meant birthday! The dance routine for your birthday." She smiled at him sheepishly, hoping against hope she hadn't really made him suspicious.

Kai shrugged, resuming the chewing of his salad. Nya scrunched up her nose at the greens on her brother's plate. "Why are you eating that?" She asked, pointing at the plate.

Kai gulped down his food. "Mom said I had to maintain my figure especially till the coronation," he explained, waving around his fork. "She banned all kinds of junk food. I'm only allowed these surprisingly delicious salads."

Nya rolled her ebony eyes. "Seriously," she muttered. "They're ruining everything for this ball." She eyed her brother who was ignoring her every statement, busy with the salad.

"They even turned my pizza obsessed brother into a rabbit," the princess mumbled to herself, her chair scraping the floor as she got up from the table. "See you later, future king."
She was halfway across the hall, when she heard her name being called.

"Nya, wait!"

The princess turned around to see her brother come running after her. She folded her arms and gazed up at him. Kai grabbed her shoulders and looked into her jet black orbs.

"Nya, you are a princess!" he exclaimed dramatically. "And sister to Prince Kai who will be King Kai in a few years' time!"

Kai took off his crown and placed it on Nya's head, stepping back to observe her. "See! You can do anything if you never give up. Especially when it can lead to an event that can completely ruin my birthday and coronation."

His sister groaned before saying, "Are you done with putting yourself in the spotlight?"

"Yes!" Kai stated, raising a finger. "But now it's time to for you to steal it from me. Let's go!" Saying this, he darted from the room as Nya followed suit. "Go where?!"

"To the ballroom!"

Kai took hold of Nya's hands, placing one on his shoulder and holding the other in his own. The princess looked at her brother unsurely. "Kai," she began, "if Monsieur Pierre failed to teach me, what makes you think that you'll succeed?"

"Because we have something you'll never have with anyone else: a bond – a sibling bond," the prince evaluated the reason for his beliefs as he placed his hand on Nya's waist. The princess merely shrugged.

"Now, we dance!" He announced, waiting for the music to start. As the notes of Sing Sweet Nightingale poured out of the music player, Kai guided Nya into a waltz, counting the number of steps she had to make.

He made sure that his feet stayed clear of coming under Nya's heels but that was impossible since his sister was so hopeless at dancing. When it felt like his feet would become mushier than mashed potatoes, he stopped the music and stared at the princess.

"What?" She asked as if she didn't know what was wrong. Kai placed a hand on his forehead and let out a whoosh of air. "Y'know," he started, trying to act nonchalant, "I've deduced one fact out of today's dance session."

"And what's that?"

The prince took in a deep, calming breath before glaring at Nya indignantly. "You. Can't. Dance!"

The black-haired princess looked at her brother as if he was the most stupid person she ever had the misfortune to be siblings with. "And you're realizing that now?"

The boy inspected his nails casually, his egotistic personality coming back. "I mean it's hard to pay attention to other people when you're the crown prince and the heir to the throne."

Nya scoffed, folding her arms and pouting like a cranky child. Kai rolled his hazel eyes at his sister's behaviour. He tried to explain once more. "Look, you can't dance . . ."

"I know! How many–"

" . . . like a princess."

Nya stopped short and raised her eyes to meet her brother's. "Huh?"

Kai smiled, glad that he finally knew how to solve this problem. "Yeah! You don't want to dance like a princess. Even I die of boredom doing those boring steps."

Nya nodded slightly, a subtle smile on her face. She had always felt confined with the slow dance steps of the boring music her mother usually made her dance to.

Dancing was like a feeling and for it to be visible, it must be exhibited with passion, energy and enthusiasm. "I see what you mean," she muttered, amused at the curiosity of what her brother had in store for her.

"You gotta just let your body move with the flow," Kai breathed out. "Let your feet move of their own accord."

Nya contemplated all this for a moment. Her face fell in disappointment as she realized something. "But Mom is so not gonna let me boogie freestyle. She's gonna drop dead at the sight of me."

Kai huffed as the conversation again took a turn of hopelessness. "Relax, will you. I'll handle her, you dance."

"But what about the guests?" Nya continued, ignoring the prince's attempt to calm her. "Lord Chen will never allow Skylor to even come near you if he sees his daughter's potential future sister-in-law tapdancing in the ballroom."

Kai grabbed the babbling girl's shoulder and shook her to make her snap out of it. "My birthday, my rules. I'll take care of the music, guests, parents, everything!"

"I wanna do this and not wanna do this at the same time," his sister prattled.

"Don't worry," Kai comforted. "I'll be dancing with you."

"You are?"

"Yup."

Nya hummed in thought. The King and Queen were going to kill them but at least they would have fun. It was a birthday after all – and a coronation . . . and a wife-finding party.

"I'm in!" She announced, laughing as she hugged her brother. "Thank you!"

Kai smirked, tilting his crown on his spiky haired head. "You're welcome, Your Majesty."

"By the way," the princess wondered. "Do we have pop music?"

"We sure do, sister!" Kai stated, shifting over to the music player. "Let's dance – un-princess style!"

The pop music filled the ballroom and reverberated off the walls as they danced – or rather jumped up, kicked back, whipped around and spun and then jumped back to do it again.

"Monsieur Pierre is gonna burst an artery if he sees us dancing like this."

"Yup."
